Falcons Friday Injury Report: Kelvin Hayden Is Out
Bad news, everyone!
The Falcons could be down as many as three key players against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday afternoon, thanks to the Football Gods kneecapping our boys in black and red. The first and most obvious absence in Jon Babineaux, who will be out for the next couple of weeks with a partial MCL tear. That's not the news, though.
No, the news is that Kelvin Hayden is out. The Atlanta Falcons got a nice performance out of him against the Eagles, and perpetual punching bag Chris Owens will start in his place. Frankly, I'm not sufficiently intimidated by any Bucs wide receiver to be worried about Owens. There's also the fact that the fan hatred for him and all he stands for is more than a bit over the top.
The surprise on this list is Stephen Nicholas. The athletic linebacker has been solid as a starter outside through the first two games, and he's officially questionable for Sunday based on his limited practice today. If he can't go, thankfully the Falcons have Mike Peterson, run-stopping Methuselah.
Now the good news. Matt Ryan and Todd McClure are probable, and it'll be very nice to get McClure back on the offensive line. Roddy White, Shann Schillinger, John Abraham, Corey Peters and Ray Edwards are also all considered probable. The Falcons should be reasonably healthy, then, for an important game.
React! Rapidly!

seeing Stephen Nicholas on the list is an unplesant surprise
at least we’re good on offense. here’s hoping we build the lead early so that we don’t have to risk Ryan running for his life again, and on defense even BVG can call the plays once Bucs are forced to throw.

Hayden is key.
He is new but he proved to me last week that he still has it and deserves the starting spot. If anything his presence mixed with Grimes keeps the other team from thinking that they can air it out. I feel confident that our linebackers corps. can hold it together without Nicholas but he always makes it better.

Not Stephen Nicholas.
Falcons didn’t use a lot of Nickle package in both the games against Bucs last year , so not much worried about Chris Owens taking 15-20 snaps. If Nicholas can’t go,it can be a problem for the defense with Mike Peterson’s coverage skills.
It's all about Process...
Does Hayden
Have a rep for being injury prone? It seems like I heard that somewhere

Yes he does...
in case you’re not being facetious. If you are…shame on you!

Hayden
It’s calculated medical risk Falcons took with him,he was signed at a Veteran minimum and I believe we got some break in cap space for signing him.

Hate to see Nicholas out
but it is good to have the ageless (ahem!, well ok, versatile?) Peterson to plug in for 1 game (we hope)

from what I remember
Nicholas is better in pass coverage and spying the opposing QB, but Peterson was good against the run. I hope he hasn’t lost a step

Dont get it twisted
MP is a better run stopper than SN by far he’s jus not all that great in coverage, which i dont think will be much of this week. So SN gets a sunday pass! Rest up and Get well brother we’ll need u for the Green Gay Bastards….! i mean Packers game!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think we’ll be just fine w/ MP cuz thier wont be much passing his way. but hes a beast with lofton in stopping the run However i am EXTREMLY PISSED about this hayden character bc i never saw him leave the game early, what knid of injury hurts after the game that’s so bad that u can’t play the following week. Is he Norwood in disguise?

Are you serious?
You’re pissed that Hayden’s hurt?
You’ve never seen a player get hurt and fight through a game and then have to sit for a while? How about Miles Austin in last weekends DAL/SF game? He tore his hamstring so badly he might miss four weeks and never came out of the game. Unreal.
True but he's caught about 10 passes this year
non td’s, which averages out to 5 catches a game and also added up to an average TE performance so far and judging by the defence’s they’ve faced so far. He’s not gonna be a “big Time” factor for the 2011 birds “D”. we may hear his name twice!

Tony on the other hand......um let's save that for another discusion!!! shall we

He’s still a premier tight end in the league with enough ability to make us curse his name twice when saying it. I’m with you in hoping that’s not the case, but its worth noting. The bucs were really high on him through camps.

with decent backups at each spot
it shouldn’t make a lot of difference (hopefully)
Atlanta will win a championship....someday

Here's to hoping the team doesn't rush Hayden back
We have two very winnable games against Tampa and the Seachickens so there is no need to rush him back. I’m praying to the football gods that he is back and healthy for the GB game. I can’t bear the thought of Chris Owens getting burned to a crisp by Aaron Rodgers again.
I second this emotion

I wanted to disagree
after reading the first sentence – I sniffed some comlacency there. but then when I got to the point about Rogers, I figured that I pick the lesser of evils – not having Hayden for these 2 games over having Owens against GB

Btw
The Bucs nation said something about JJ not being a good receiver… Maybe I’m judging reading it wrong.

Well...
I think Chris Owens deserves the heat he’s getting. I’m not chasing him outta town with a pitchfork and torch, but he’s been terrible lately. That could certainly be on BVG, but I’ve never seen a corner ignore his receiver until the pass is thrown the way I see it with him. With the exception of Chris Houston maybe.

He was ok last game
That screen he sniffed out in the Eagles game was a HUGE play.
I’d rather see Hayden…question…could we see DeCoud play some nickle? I doubt it, but it wouldn’t hurt, and I think it would help build his confidence.

good question
waiting for someone to answer. but if it’s possible, I’d say having DeCould desperate (hope so) for a place in the starting lineup in the nickel position would be awesome

Thank the holy heavens Todd McClure is back
If the O-line can consistently give Ryan decent protection I like the Falcon’s chances in this game. If they stick to their game plan I think they can outscore the Bucs if it comes down to that.
I'm a little concerned about the injury bug
MS is always cautious about injuries, which is good, and there is always mis-information in the reports. But, ATL’s schedule is tough and injuries could be a killer.
at least our bye week this season
is a convenient one – not like in 2009 when we had many injured players
