Falcons Sign Brett Romberg, Cut Rob Bruggeman
You try to figure this out.
Best I can tell, the Falcons cut Brett Romberg shortly after signing him because they didn't want to guarantee his contract. Or they might have waived Rob Bruggeman shortly after signing him because he was suffering from the after-effects of the concussion. Or this is going to be a constant rotation, so that each guy gets an alternating week with the team?
I think I've figured out the team's ultimate goal here: To combine the two. Soon, the Falcons will have Brob Romggeman, a backup lineman with the veteran savvy of Brett Romberg and the flowering promise of Rob Bruggeman. He will stand twelve feet tall and breathe fire. Through his eyes.
Seriously, though, Romberg is the guy I want at center while Todd McClure's down if something should happen to Joe Hawley. Considering Hawley was singled out by Mike Smith as the team's best lineman during the Bears game, I don't think we have to worry about Romberg seeing gametime based on performance.
Bruggeman is a project with some upside and familiarity in the Falcons' system, so we may not have seen the last of him. Heck, he could be back next week.
Happy to have Romberg back, or do you not even really care?

Brob Romggeman... fire shooting from eyes... that is good news!
I guess I’d rather see Romberg if something happened to Hawley, too.
Hadn’t heard about Coach Smith’s comment on Hawley’s performance. That’s good, I guess (this week’s “best” O-Lineman is kinda like being the least stinky dog turd, if you ask me).
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
Yeah, something like that
Although I am not sure how much of this is lip service. Hawley was part of the reason Melton had a monster game, and PFF also wasn’t very kind on his performance:
Todd McClure’s stand in for this game, Joe Hawley, was an issue. Garett Reynolds didn’t have a great game himself, coughing up a sack and a pair of hits, but he was much more effective in the run game than Hawley, who was constantly abused at the point of attack.
thanks for that link
I always forget to check PFF for their game recaps (I shut them out after they put their stats behind the pay-wall). They are right that the O-Line looked like they had no clue what to do with the stunts/twists. And those numbers on Dunta were, um… ugly.
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
Yeah...
Dunta looked like a high-schooler. I was chalking it up to rust as he didn’t see allot of time in PS games and he is still kind of recovering.
April 1974 - Tug McGraw, when asked if he preferred grass or AstroTurf: "I don't know. I never smoked AstroTurf."
interesting stats, but
in my opinion, these numbers can be subjective and not revealing all the truth. it’s supposed to be a cohesive line, and if one link falls apart, the rest of the line will feel the impact. so even if the center gave up a sack, it might well be because of one of the guards who was being abused by defensive linemen and thus the center had to watch one of his sides too.

I just want Todd.
I’ve realized how important he is to the OL. If I was a player groupie I would be trying to find a #62 jersey right now.
If I was a player groupie
If?

Well...let me qualify that. :)
I don’t pick out one player and wear their jersey etc. I’m a FALCON fan. Players come and go. I’m for the team.

What?
Considering Hawley was singled out by Mike Smith as the team’s best lineman during the Bears game, I don’t think we have to worry about Romberg seeing gametime based on performance.
If Mike Smith actually said this I’m really worried about the Falcons this year, it means he isn’t paying attention, or he’s trying to give a young player some added confidence going into the next game, but babying him won’t do it. He played terrible, so let him know he stunk! I honestly don’t think Smitty said that, I can’t find that quote anywhere and it doesn’t match what’s on film.
What’s on film:
- Nearly all pressure came from the middle where Hawley was!
- On a couple plays he blocked the wrong defender allowing a free rush for someone else. One way play in particular he not only blocked the wrong defender he blocked Toeina (of all people) who was already engaged by Blalock, allowing Okoye a free rush where he blasted Ryan, who never had a chance.
- And IMO the worst thing he did all night, on a consistant basis, was bob his head up and down right before he snapped the ball, but to my surprise only being called for a false start once. This is a stupid technique, period. By him bobbing his head right before he snapped the ball he’s not only making himself look foolish, he’s also helping the defense because THEY KNEW WHEN THE BALL WAS BEING SNAPPED!
I’d rather Romberg step right in and play Sunday if McClure can’t go, it’s better than having your starting QB on I.R. You can experiment everywhere else in football, but it’s foolish to do it on the offensive line, it didn’t work against the Bears it definitely won’t work against the Eagles.

Thank you.
I still can’t believe he siad that! Is he serious?
by dirtybirdy84 on Sep 13, 2011 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Actually he is not off the mark.
Hawely was bad against the run, he had couple of lapses in pass blocking but held up ok for most part. Garret Reynolds was worse than other OL in Pass blocking. And Baker was as usual mediocre.Wish we had kept Harvey, but I hope GR picks it up fast.

No he's so far off the mark it's unreal.
Hawley and Reynolds were responsible for Henry Melton (2 sacks and 7, yes 7 qb hits!) and Amobi Okoye(who?), who combined had 3 sacks and 9 qb hits! As I stated before, Henry Melton and Amobi Okoye are lower level talent! They have higher level talent next week in Philly, hmmmm let’s see, Mike Patterson and Jiqua Parker! Let’s be real folks, Smitty is baby talking them, he knows those guys stunk and he trying to build them up mentally………….like you do a child or a toddler..“It’s ok baby you’ll do better next time”. It’s Bulls—-

Hey
Hawley and Reynolds are 4th and 5th rd draft picks so their not exactly top level talent either. At some point you gotta see what you got in these guys. Coach rarely throws guys under the bus. McClure is not going to play forever regardless.
True
Hopefully by the time McClure decides to retire we’ll have a decent backup plan. Hawley is way better suited as a guard.

No he's not.
Against Hawley he is.
before Sunday he had only 2.5 sacks in 3 years, how’s that very, very good?
by dirtybirdy84 on Sep 13, 2011 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions
He was a reserve for two seasons
The coaching staff was talking him up coming into this season based on some showing of potential last year, and he was a factor against the run before that. I think you’ll see a breakout season.

OL numbers can be complicated.
Its hard to blame all the sacks and hits by a DT on both C and a Guard unless you look at the tape. Some times if OL breaks on the outside and Matt moves inside its easy picking for the DT’s. OL is a collective effort and one of the most important thing is where did the protection break not necessarily where QB was hit or sacked. If QB’s stayed at one spot it would have been no brainier.

More Excuses?
Look my point is Hawley is far from the best performing offensive lineman in Sunday’s loss, that’s more evident than the shape of the sun. You guys can keep making excuses for him, maybe ya’ll have grown to expect/accept mediocracy…….NOT ME.
by dirtybirdy84 on Sep 13, 2011 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions
No Excuses!
I watched the game in slow motion. I tam not saying Hawley was good , he was better than I thought he did. He was ridiculously bad in couple of plays where he didn have any one to block. I was just saying he was better in pass blocking than the Run.

my take on this
the whole line sucked, and in some cases, Matty himself was liable for holding the ball for too long. it’s a collective effort
Atlanta Falcons fan in Moscow, Russia
Reynolds was definitely bad
Without having recorded the game to go back and break it down, I can’t really speak to Hawley, but I don’t think he was particularly good.
I’ll be watching carefully this Sunday, though, to see if Hawley is really playing pretty well or if Mike Smith is blowing smoke up our collective ass.
My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.
by willlinn on May 17, 2011 2:13 PM EDT
Hmmm
Who was Baker and Blalock responsible for? Baker had Julius Peppers who had 2sacks and only 1 QB hit, sounds like a normal day at the office for him nothing spectacular right? Blalock had M. Toeina who only had 2 tackles.
Who was Hawley and Reynolds responsible for? Henry Melton (2 sacks and 7, yes 7 qb hits!) and Amobi Okoye(who?), who combined had 3 sacks and 9 qb hits! Henry Melton and Amobi Okoye are lower level talent! They have higher level talent next week in Philly, Mike Patterson and Jiqua Parker!

Blalock was probably our best overall performer on the day
Opened some big holes in the run game-we were running the ball very well from the left side all day-and kept his man occupied most of the game.
My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.
by willlinn on May 17, 2011 2:13 PM EDT
He still made some bonehead moves a time or two, like everybody else that day.
Regardless, you still may be right. Clabo wasn’t the worst either.
That push up the middle left Matt unable to step up
Giving those edge rushers even more time to get by our tackles.
Correct..
lets just say that they ALL stunk the place up, and hopefully they can do better.

Garrett Reynolds
numbers at the combine told me 2 things, he was slow and he was weak. Slow you can’t do much about so I thought ok this guy will have beefed up over the last couple of yrs and become the incredible hulk. Granted he is a big human being by normal standards however he does not look like he has touched a weight room at all since he got drafted. 6’7 means high center of balance trust me I’m 6’5. You have got to have the raw power to compensate for your inabilty to always get as low as your opponent and Mr. Reynolds just does not have that. Remeber that guy that wore #98 well he had the same problem…no man strength. Reynolds is not a starter at any position in the NFL in my opinion. Hawley given another yr or 2 maybe.
All I know is that
we need to be able to ram the ball down the Eagles throats because trying to pass on their DBs will be an issue. Also we need to make sure Vick don’t get the ball too much to establish any kind of rythm.
Run the ball we can do….. Hopefully we can keep it away from them, because the Eagles offense always seem to have our number. But again, who cant beat the notorious Soft Zones of BVG…
That being said, we will have to bring our A game to pull out a win this week. If we get the win, all of this will go away and we can gain some momentum. Tampa and Seattle are 2 very winnable games.
by VA Dirty Bird on Sep 13, 2011 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions
BVG
just said in interview missed tackles due to lack of intensity. What this tells me is coaches are not getting in the players heads. No motivation skills. These players should be so amped up for the season opener that their intensity levels are too high not too low.
It might also be due to the fact that they rarely practice tackling
For fear of damaging their million dollar investments. To me it sounds like a sh!t excuse from BVG. He’s to much of a yeller belly to take chances on D, instead playing high school soft zone hoping not to lose. He’s shifting the blame slightly so the spotlight isn’t completely on him. I’m surprised he didn’t try to pull the ol “we had guys in position to make the play, we just didn’t execute well.” out of his ’stache.
Wish we knew when peters was coming back.
I hope Philly thinks they can walk the dog on us Sunday.

MM Needs to sit down
MM and his play calling needs to sit on the bench this week. He has no idea how to adjust and make plays They were eating our lunch rushing just 4 and he never made the first adjustment. BVG also needs to do something about the middle of the defense..Players are playing too far off their man..and DR, what has he done but give up big plays..get rid of him now and put someone there who wants to play..
Get rid of DR?
You have no clue about what you’re talking about. Do you have any idea how much better the pass coverage was last year compared to 2009? Do you also realize that the only change in the D between 2009 and 2010 was that aaddition of DR? ATL had the same poor pass rush for both years. People need to take a step back and learn the value of some players for a change.
I want to see DR in man.
The reason he was good in his rookie year in Houston was because their scheme was to crowd the line, press with corners and over the top high safeties. He was a bit more reckless but was in better position to make plays.
Press coverage is his forte, I want him in it. (that’s what she said)

And by ‘it’ I mean Melton (7 QB hits, 2 sacks, 1st career start)

that's what I mean.
To say that Hawley was the best is a huge slap in the face to the rest of the OL. It’s almost like saying, “Hawley at least gave effort in his first game. However, you fcks have no excuses!” Plus, Hawley needs all the confidence he can get after that disaster.
I don't like reverse psychology
MS should shoot straight and say “You all sucked, just some less than others”, and move on.
behind closed doors, yes
I don’t mind coachspeak in a press conference.
