Falcons-Ravens Postgame Thread: A Pre-Season Loss, But So What?

That game was ugly with a side of boring.

I put "so what?" in the title because this game meant so little on so many levels. The starters barely played, neither team put an enormous amount of effort into calling tricksy plays and John Parker Wilson was like a zombie out there.

I will say that Antone Smith probably just made this football team, and guys like Kamaal McIlwain and even Robert James helped their cases. That will be what matters when the dust settles on this one.

Discuss! You'll find a storm of recaps coming your way starting tomorrow morning.

Turned the game off

Then I get an espn update telling me A. Smith 11 Carries 111 yards 1 TD…
wtf?

by FlyYouFalcons on Sep 1, 2011 11:01 PM EDT reply actions

Antone Smith was definitely a bright spot.

He ended up with 158 yards (114 rushing, and 44 receiving). The entire offense produced 343 yards for the game. So, Antone Smith accounted for 46% of the offensive yardage production.

I'm overjoyed

When I think that the next game is the season opener!! Btw guys, for a little refresher, Colts went 0-4 in the PS the year they won the Super Bowl.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was curious whether it had been done before.

colts make a regular habit of it

may i also point out in recent past, preseason has almost been a guage of how a team does but in reverse. 2008 lions, 2008 colts various other teams i cant be bothered listing or remembering but i saw before in an article somewhere

then 0-4 in 2008 – Preseason means nothing

Really?

I coulda sworn they went 0-4. But regardless, it truly is nothing but a scope for coaches to figure out who to cut.

If I took much from this game

It’s that Rey Edwards looks good to go for the start of the season. I was a bit worried about him after he didn’t play in the first two preseason games, but having him ready is definitely good news.

My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

Bear Woods looked good to me.

How’d he look when he played? I only saw half the 4th quarter and he wasn’t in when I left.

on the west coast the Colts game was more important… :-/

Was wondering how woods did? I hope he sticks, I am really liking this guys playing. Knew nothing about him before the pre-season and I am impressed with him!!

Here are some positives I'll take away from this dreadfully boring game:
  • The starting D line looked really good, even with Abe’s sitting this one out. Big Play Ray v2 & Duffman brought consistent pressure around the ends.
  • Grimes had yet another pick.
  • Julio had a nice end around, with an even better block by Redman.
  • The offense seems to have a new found liking to screen passes, and have been successful with them. I think we’ll see quite a few screens to Quizz this year.
  • Smith now seems like a lock to be the 4th string halfback.
  • Bosher can definitely punt it a long way. He even had a touch back on 1 of the 2 kickoffs we had during the game. I’m feeling alright with Bosher and Bryant handling kickoffs, FG’s, and punts.

by grg on Sep 1, 2011 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

What was amazing to me about that end-around

is how early JJ slowed down and new he’d need both those blockers to get some good yards.

Boring ass game. Good luck. Hope to see you guys in the SB, and I hope we get to finally settle who’s the better QB of the ’08 draft.

I wish this had been the 2nd or 3rd preseason game, rather than the 4th.

I’ve been wanting to see how the Vonta Leach / Ray Rice duo has been doing. Leach may be the only blocking fullback in the NFL better than Ovie Mughelli.

Yeah So What Dave,

But from what I’ve seen overall in the preseason, this was totally unacceptable to me. At least try to win one friggin’ game, I don’t care if it’s preseason or not. They better be ready for next week, and the season to come, or it’s gonna be a long one to say the least, and I agree with Richie Grogan, Thank God the preseason is over! I was satisfied overall with the offense, and the first and second team d. Special teams with the execption of Matt Ice Water Bryant, was awful for the most part. I may be speaking more emotionally at this point, but it’s time to get heads out of butts and start to take things seriously, I saw a lot of loafing in the preseason. Been through way too many seasons since the 70’s, time to win this thing. Your right, so what, it’s preseason! Us as Falcon fans, need to worry about one team: The Falcons, not the Eagles, or the Saints, or whoever, just the Falcons. Yes the game was friggin’ BORING as hell, I was hanging with my kids during the game, criminy!!

Once we win opening day,

These last 4 games will be completely forgotten.
Just relax. Be amazed thinking about how awesome an offense with Matty, Roddy, JJ, Gonzo, Turner, Quizz, and HD will be, and dream of Ray Edwards eating Jay Cutler.

no excuses

the falcons don;t have any excuses for tonight s game i really think that they didn t won t to win, they didn;t show much of nothing. but they could have given a little bit more of a effert maybe they are playing possum. or 1 2 3 red light i don’t know

No excuses are needed to lose a preseason game.

It’s not a real game. It’s purpose is to put players in certain situations that will come about in real play.

Personally...

I think we should have kept the Sausage King and let JPW stick his thumb out for a ride to the next town…neither one did very good though, but that’s just me.

This game was so boring in the 4th I had to change the channel to Jersey Shore.

TNT should've treated Lebron's return to Cleveland game like 2k11 and cut the game off after the Cavs were down by 30. lol

by Krobify on Sep 1, 2011 11:40 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I think if nothing else we can take away that:

A) Grimes needs almost no time to pick of any below average QB’s, he has a gift
B) Our starting team is ready to play, today seemed to tell us that Edwards, Bosher and anyone else who is starting, is ready to play at a high level right away.
C) Antone Smith is our 4th string RB and can make some good plays when given a shot.
D) Jones and Rodgers adds not only explosiveness but a couple new plays we have been lacking in the last couple years. ie. the end around and the rb screen.
E) we have depth at corner. With Grimes and Robinson as 1 and 2 we have Franks, Hayden, Owens, Walls and McIlwain (I guess thats the order) who can fill in the other roles behind them. Unfortunately I doubt we will keep anymore then 6, maybe even 5

i have 2 big concerns,
O Line, and ST Coverage,
not as concerned about secondary now, we should be ok back there now with hayden and sanders, but the o line…..uglyyyyyyyyyyyyyy tonight, and from the left side , they better tighten up the pass protection, or we will be seeing more of redman and jpw….

I agree...

2 new starters (side-by-side no less) on the OL…I think I know where da point of attack will be for da Bears D. Hopefully this is a short term issue—MCCLURE-GET WELL SOON!

And kick coverage was unimpressive all pre-season. I hope it was because Armstrong was evaluating UFAs whilst saving wear/tear on the "real" STers. Otherwise, there will be heartbreaking losses in our future where the O and D play their butts off for 58 minutes only to have ST blow the game in the 2 minutes they are on the field.

Just a note

Seeing as we’re one of the better teams in the NFL most of the best undrafted rookies go to crappier teams where they will have a better shot of actually making the team. It actually makes quite a bit of sense because we seem to always be winning until the third, fourth and fifth stringers hit the turf.

Oh and we need to find a replacement for JPW, he sucks.

Bosher

I was wondering, cause I didn’t see the game, why everyone was raving about Bosher. He averaged 33 Yards per punt. Was it just because the field was always so short? How come such a low average gets so much praise?

He was pinning them inside the 20.

I am worried that he can’t punt far though.

Point Counterpoint

If I were da Bears I would be looking at Reynolds and Hawley side-by-side on the OL and salivating huge puddles. If you were the Falcons coaches and knew da Bears are likely to attack Reynolds/Hawley you would do ____________ to counter???

by LifeLongBirdFan on Sep 2, 2011 7:25 AM EDT reply actions

Fill In The Blank - Option 1

Option 1 – Scheme for a 5ft6 in/190lb running back to help reinforce the Reynolds/Hawley section of the OL. 3 first-time-starters have to be better than 2…Right?
