Sunday Afternoon Quick Hits For The Falcons: John Parker Wilson Concussed

There's a lot of things going on at practice today, so rather than post a ton of FanShots to get caught up, I thought I'd collect everything in a post.

Here's the rundown:

I'll make every effort to update you on big doings, especially if we get news on how Peters is doing. For now, talk Falcons and thank the fine collection of reporters and team staff above who gave us these updates.

I’ve seen K. Biermann in person and I’ve seen T. Clabo in person. K. Biermann is big but even if I were his size I’d still think twice about running up on T. Clabo.

I was watching the ball carrier,

But it seemed like Beerman bull-rushed Clabo right to his ass.

It happened during a part of practice where they separated the offensive and defensive positions. The D line was doing a rotation of sled work and some kind of light contact drill. It was about 100 yards away, and I was preoccupied with WR/CB 1-on-1s. My wife was as close to the D-line as viewers were allowed – only about 50 yards away, and while she didn’t see the injury occur (nobody did, Julio was embarrassing Dunta) she did see him on the ground, and said the staff responded “in force” and seemed pretty intense.

Meant to add

She thinks it was a non-contact injury; I hope she’s wrong.

Your wife goes to Falcon's practice?

Marry her!

Keep in mind

The facts that we live in Florida and that we brought our 5 kids with us and you’ll begin to understand her awesomeness. Throw in that she surprised me with the trip and that she watched the kids yesterday while I shot skeet with my friends and you’ll understand why we have 5 kids. ;)

Peters being injured would be a problem

why aren’t the guys practicing in knee protection?

Any word on Dent?

by mwalex on Aug 14, 2011 4:08 PM EDT reply actions

Any weight lifter will tell you

Doing reps in protective gear is actually worse for you. It keeps you from building the supporting muscles and makes you more susceptible to injury in the long run.

by The DW on Aug 14, 2011 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

An ACL/MCL is not a supporting muscle

The support is there to prevent torque in an unnatural direction. If it was an issue why do so many OL use them?

by mwalex on Aug 14, 2011 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I know it's not a supporting muscle

But to help give the ACL support – especially after surgery – it’s critically important to build up those supporting muscles in the knee. My PT specifically told me to NOT wear a brace after my ACL surgery, as the brace takes the place of the support systems in the knee and actually acts as a detriment.

As for why a bunch of OL guys use them – I think part of it is due to the fact that many of these guys are un-naturally big and are putting extra stress on their knees due to their massive weight.

by The DW on Aug 14, 2011 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

That was after surgery

not as a preventative for tearing the ACL in the first place. Those are two very different situations.

The DE’s might have a problem with braces but the DT’s should be fine.

I doubt it’s weight related for the OL as it’s gotten to the point that many DL. especially NT’s, approximate the weight of OL. It probably has more to do with lateral or rotational torque.

Coach smith says Peters' injury doesn't require surgery.

Probably a sprain by my estimation?

I'd take what our staff says w/a grain of salt

Spoon didn’t require surgery last season and ended up missing 5 games and was a role player upon returning.

Not intentional

The nature of knee injuries is that they are hard to get a grasp on, and you don’t know how different people are going to respond.

by The DW on Aug 14, 2011 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

So bummed. I really hope it's not a lingering thing

I guess a bright spot is we get to see a lot more of other DT’s and what they can do. Hopefully Peters misses only a couple of weeks. Don’t need him wringing off the rust game one.

by aces666high on Aug 14, 2011 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Knee injuries

Given the 14 billion ways there are to get injured, injuries to the knee are sometimes the most severe. Even Vick – after a broken leg – was able to return late in the same season. But one ACL tear and a guy goes down for an entire season and isn’t the same for another year after that.

That said, I think MS and TD have a long-term view of this team, and they aren’t going to risk their players for the purpose of getting a player in the game. They took it easy on Peria all last year, and I think it’s paying off now. I trust that they’ll handle Peters right, even if it means sitting him for longer than we’d like.

by The DW on Aug 14, 2011 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

If it was an ACL tear they would have said so.

I’m encouraged.

...or would they...

No, I get it. Just saying Comrade came from the most secretive team in all of sports and those habits have trickled down. Hence why everyone is listed as questionable even when they need their leg surgically reattached. Hoping for the best though.

by aces666high on Aug 14, 2011 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

i'm encouraged too

even if he does end up having to miss 3 or 4 weeks, that’s fine… season doesn’t start for another month. Lots of time to recover.

by cheshire falcon on Aug 14, 2011 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

no surgery should just mean he’ll just need rest.

Who's this Darrin Walls kid?

He played well at ND, he was a play maker. He left in 2008 for personal reasons, but returned in 2009. Did his spotty record cause some draft scouts to dismiss him?
