Your Post-Saturday Atlanta Falcons Training Camp Report

Mike Smith on the prowl. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

We're going to adopt a very loose format to these updates, given the likelihood that some days will go by where the most exciting news is that Mike Smith grimaced, leaned forward and cursed someone out. I'll collect three or four of the big updates for the day and we'll

Here's what we learned from Saturday's training camp, based on observers' reports. If you have your own, please add them to the comments and I'll move them up to the main post.

More to come as the day goes on, I'm sure. In the meantime, talk free agency, talk training camp and talk your own expectations for our 2011 Atlanta Falcons.

Reynolds is two inches taller and two pounds lighter than Reynolds

Yeah he's very tall

makes me wonder if Ryan prefers such a tall guy. Wasn’t Dahl 6"5’? Don’t know how much of a difference it would make, but Reynolds is actually a little taller than Ryan.

At OT

it probably wouldn’t be that much of a difference, but I could see that being a different story at OG.

dave has written something that make me smh and wonde wth??? so GR is two inches taller and 2 pounds lighter than himself, yeah, i guess if he’s THAT messed up, i’d put my money on MJ too…..geesh

ya know, your articles only take a couple of seconds to read (not counting time laughing), it wouldn’t be difficult to actually proof read them

nope, never got beat up in school. i was the nerd they all came to for help to pass the big test. no i didn’t know what he meant to say, did he mean GR is taller but lighter than Dahl was, or MJ is? no, i don’t assume to ‘know what he meant’

and as for troll, that one makes me ROFLMAO, i’m one of the mods on one of the more popular falcons boards. Dave just needs to proof read…and the rest of you. no doubt i made better grades than you in school and you tried your best to see over my shoulder during finals

But even if you did, the guy who made better grades didn’t get beat up for it… it was the guy who kept talking about how much smarter he was than everyone else who got beat up.

Dave is an incredible writer! I’ve never come across someone as creative and clever as Dave, and I feel extremely lucky to have him as the head writer here. He is entitled to an occasional honest mistake. I’m sure he doesn’t mind having them pointed out, but not with the tone you’ve just taken. I think an apology would be appropriate.

Next moves?

It obviously depends on what happens with Snelling (questionable), Blalock (surely we re-sign him) and Grimes (this should be a no-brainer).

But based on what we know right now, i would argue that secondary depth would be priority #1. Agree/disagree? I’m thinking more safety than corner, but honestly either one would be nice. And i’m thinking Dimitroff does something like what he did a couple of years ago with Foxworth here… get a proven veteran who is a diamond in the rough.

by cheshire falcon on Jul 31, 2011 12:26 PM EDT reply actions

Interesting question

I think Blalock is the priority, then DB depth. The RB market is pretty stale right now, so I think they can afford to wait a bit on that. Plus, I could see one or two decent RBs getting cut still. And for anyone even thinking about saying “Noel Divine…blah blah blah,” he walked out on the Eagles. The guy is probably already done in the NFL.

by KMarch on Jul 31, 2011 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, i meant putting aside signing our unsigned free agents

Assume we bring all of those guys back (which I know is unlikely)… what is the biggest area of need?

I’d also feel comfortable with another LB… i feel like we have a solid corps, but need a little depth there.

by cheshire falcon on Jul 31, 2011 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we have enough depth

Lofton, Nicholas and Spoon as the starters

Wire, Peterson and Dent as backups

Then we have young guys like Adkins, James and Woods.

I don’t really see room for another linebacker.

didn’t grimes say he was signing his tender for this year and would worry about long term next year? thinking i read that somewhere, his attitude sounded like mannings, let’s worry about the team first. nice to have a team that players WANT to be on and are willing to take a little less to stick around or come around. I do hope we sign snelling and blalock, though i think we have some pretty good depth on the OL with Johnson, Valdez, and Hawley waiting in the wings

by FrozenFinger on Jul 31, 2011 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Kind of Pissed

that the Saints signed Fabian Washington. They already had one of the deepest secondaries in the NFL, this just solidifies it. Makes me a little nervous, I’ll be honest. We will have to stay with a running strategy first against them. Wish we could solidify our secondary like that.

Saints have Greer, Porter, Harper, Jenkins, Robinson, Torrence, and now Washington. That’s only their named players, they still have plenty of scrubs. Would be nice if they had to cut DeAndre McDaniel, and we could pick him up.

by KMarch on Jul 31, 2011 12:40 PM EDT reply actions

While were getting better

It seems like the 2 other teams (not counting packers) fighting for the NFC are getting amazingly better. The eagles and their “dream team” and now the saints might have the second best secondary in the NFL behind Philly. If Ingram turns out for them, we could be in a lot of trouble. They’re basically the same team from last year, just replaced Bush with Sproles, added the best RB in the draft, and have bolstered their secondary.

by dirtybirds233 on Jul 31, 2011 1:05 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Don't over-exaggerate (amazingly better?)

Everything you said of the Saints is mirrored for the Falcons. I think Edwards is a much more significant signing than Sproles. They may have added the best RB in the draft, but we added arguably the best WR.

As for the Eagles, we’ll see how that works out. Reportedly, Maclin has mono and they still have to sign their best WR. Their LBs and DLine would still leave me wanting if I was a Philly fan. Plus their new DC was an OLine coach up until, well, now.

by KMarch on Jul 31, 2011 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Puts me at ease a little

But the eagles scare the sh** out of me. Even if Vick goes down, they have Young. Now before anyone laughs, he is a winning QB which takes a lot in the NFL and minus his off field issues, showed signs of being a solid QB. I think he’d e more than capable of starting a few games and being successful while doing it of Vick were to go down.

by dirtybirds233 on Jul 31, 2011 1:34 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   1 recs

If it's one thing

Andy Reid can do it’s coach up a QB as he showed with the former Falcon who won’t be named. VY is 30-17 as a starter and now he’s with an offensive guy.

Andy Reid is 8-1 against the Falcons including playoffs. Mike Smith is 0-2 vs Andy Reid. I wouldn’t be so quick to talk them down like everybody is which really seems unlike our board. Eagles know we’re there and will be looking to make a statement when they come into the dome week 2. While we should have beaten them up there in ‘08 even with a rookie QB the game last year was over quickly and Kolb (whom I’m not sold on) killed us.

The Eagles have designed their defense to play against the Pack, Saints and Falcons. They’ve got DE Brandon Graham coming back from injury and no they’re not unbeatable but Green Bay didn’t blow them out in the playoffs either. I’d feel better if we did something before we started putting other teams down. Unless that team is the Saints.

A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice.

by FrozenFinger on Jul 31, 2011 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I don’t think anything up there is talking them down unnecessarily. Obviously, if I was an Eagles fan I’d be ecstatic right now. Still, I would compare their DE depth to ours, and say that we have better DTs and LBs. Moreover, I’d be very worried about the DC situation. He hasn’t held that position since he was a High School coach in the 80’s.

Additionally, if Super Bowls were won on preseason hype, the DAL Cowboys would have been much more successful in the last decade.

by KMarch on Jul 31, 2011 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not talking about the hype

I’m talking about dogging a team that we don’t beat. And if anybody’s got questions about a DC then baby it’s us.

A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice.

by FrozenFinger on Jul 31, 2011 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Okay

guess we have different understanding of “dogging.” For all the heat BVG takes (deservedly), he has done some good things here with some less-then-ideal players at times. If the DEF isn’t any better after this season, he’ll probably be gone, yes.

by KMarch on Jul 31, 2011 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I put that

on Mike Smith (whom I love) because he’s a defensive coach. KM I think a lot of what we have sometimes is comparing this team to Bobby Petrino’s team. Well that team was scat. If we’re going to be among the “elite” the defense has to take a monumental stride. I’m not talking statistically but I just want once to not have to worry about them. Remember when the Pats went for it on fourth and two from their own 25 and made it? Year four, it must be fixed.

A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice.

by FrozenFinger on Jul 31, 2011 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think the Saints secondary is the 2nd best in the NFL

The Packers are certainly better for a start. Greer and Porter are solid, but they are not elite. Robinson has shown nothing and couldn’t even get on the field last year. PFF has Washington with a negative coverage grade. Harper is a good in the box safety but he can’t cover (see the Seahawks game). However Malcolm Jenkins is a really good player.

by Mosugo on Jul 31, 2011 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I think they are the deepest, not necessarily the best

Good points. Again, when Harper was getting lit up in the Seahawks game, he was playing out of position for the injured Jenkins.

Look at their last decade

and tell me they’re not a force in this conference. Beating them maybe twice this year is important. At least like Green Bay did to us last year we must beat them the last time.

They need secondary depth

Since Porter is already banged up, and Greer is sure to follow. Maybe even in TC.

by TheAreopagite on Jul 31, 2011 2:36 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

They have depth

They spent a first round pick on a nickle guy (Robinson). I’m just not sold on the overall ability of some of their guys. I think Roman Harper is incredibly overrated. Jenkins could be a great safety, but to spend a top 15 pick on a safety, he needs to be. I believe they signed another corner recently, although I could be mistaken. NO has a lot of depth, but only so many of them can be on the field at once.

True

I think a lot of people are remembering Harper from late last year when he had to take Jenkins spot at FS. Harper is a solid SS.

by KMarch on Jul 31, 2011 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Roman Harper was just terrible last year

Usually when he was asked to cover a tight end (or anybody for that matter). Tony Gonzalez with two pirate peg legs could get open against him. Also memorable was the touchdown on him against Seattle where Seattle run-blocked right, the tight end on the weak side of the formation faked fallind down, then stood up, uncovered, and pulled in the TD. Classic.

I don’t know how many safeties he injured to get into the pro bowl as an alternate.

by TheAreopagite on Jul 31, 2011 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

The Saints bring back safety Roman Harper. As a strong safety he excels in the run game with a +7.1 run stop rating. However it’s hard to erase the memory of his game against the Seahawks in the playoffs where he allowed six catches for 125 yards and three touchdowns.

Great Run Stopper which is a main key for the SS. Again, last year against the Seahawks he was not playing his natural position. Of course, he’s a Saint, so yes he’s overrated, but I don’t see how you can’t say he’s a solid SS.

I will feel very good if we sign Snelling.

But it’s extremely good that we got our O-Line straight and on top of that everyone already knows the system.

Jenkins to Eagles?

Per profootballweekly.com I was kinda hoping to get him back at a lower cost.

Swore it said Eagles…now it says Vikings…

?

If you’re talking about Michael Jenkins he has signed with the Vikings.

Yep

Got it. So now we need to sign Grimes, Snelling, an experienced DB and WR…IMHO.

It would cost the locker room.

Gotta go with you there

he’s not a good person. Everyone makes mistakes and a lot of times you’re misunderstood or things are inaccurately portrayed but if you can’t get along in Minnesota you ain’t trying.

A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice.

DEF depth

that is what we need the most. Our LB depth is ok at best. Lofton is the best one we got. Weatherspoon still unproven after one season. peterson = old, questionable coverage. nicholas isn’t great either. I also would like another DE in the mix. maybe gilberry from KC or someone else kinda second tier. I have no faith in da beerman maybe to a flaw. secondary is a no brainer do we have a solid 3rd corner?

I would like us to sign Safety Bernard Pollard

He played in texas last couple years. He is from here, where I live now, was a local stud. I think he would be a great backup to Moore and TD, would help with secondary depth.

Due to the lockout, I think this season will resemble last year a lot. I think the teams that were good last year will be good again this year. there will be a suprise team or 2, but I think this year kinda follows last years script, except of course the team that wins the SB will be different, since our Falcons will finally take that last final step and bring home the Lombardi trophy to the dirty dirty!!
