Matt Ryan to Canton?

I saw an article recently on ESPN about how Aaron Rodgers compared to the last seven QB Hall Of Fame inductees and the likely next three (Brady, Manning and Favre) through their first 3 years of starting. So Favre's time with the Falcons is not included, nor is Steve Young's spot duty before he took over in '91 or his time with the Bucs. The conclusion essentially was that he compared very favourably to them. I thought I would try a similar exercise with Matt Ryan, just because we're in a 92 day lockout and it would be interesting. I'm not saying he's going to Canton, just a comparison of him to others that have or will

Star-divide

I decided to rank the QBs by QB rating as it encompasses all the other stats. The stats for Steve Young are for his first 3 years starting for the 49ers, by which time he was 30. That explains why he's so far out ahead. Montana has so few starts because of the strike shortened season. Numbers are for the regular season only.

It looks good to be honest. Some highlights are that Ryan is 4th in Passer rating after 3 years behind only a 30 year old Young, Montana and Marino. Whilst he is just ahead of Brady, Manning and Favre (His closest contemporaries on the list). Some very good company to be in. And he completely blows guys like Elway, Warren Moon and Troy Aikman out of the water. He is also tied in 2nd for wins with Marino, behind only Brady. Additionally Ryan has the 3rd least interceptions despite having the 4th most attempts. His TD's, yards and completion % rank middle of the pack at 6/11, but considering the pack that's still a huge achievement. The fact that his yards rank 6th but his attempts rank 4th indicates that his YPA is slightly on the low side, but still about average.

The lowlight however obviously are his lack of playoff, and specifically SB success. But considering that only 2 out of these 10 guys had a SB by this time in his career he has time to get there. 7 of the 10 would eventually get SBs, with several multiple winners (Elway x2, Aikman x3, Montana x4 and Brady x3). 2 of the other 3 appeared in a SB with Jim Kelly losing 4 and Marino 1.

The most apt comparison is of course Peyton Manning, as he entered the league the closest to Ryan and started from day 1 as a high pick just like him. Ryan shades both, but their Completion % and QB rating are virtually identical. However in 2 less games Ryan racked up 7 more wins and threw 24 less Interceptions. Manning didn't win a playoff game until his 6th season in the league.

The negatives are that Ryan's YPA of 6.91 is lower than Manning's of 7.32, but he is by no means embarrassed in this category. He threw 19 less TDs and 2000 less yards. Again in 2 less games and whilst being hamstrung by a conservative offense.

If Matt Ryan continues to improve and wins at least one Superbowl (or loses a couple) he will probably make it to Canton. He's already at an advantage to some of these guys as he has a head start on them after 3 years.

Honestly – I can’t wait! The controversies are going to be wonderful but there will be no arguing that based on his on the field performance, he deserves the spot.

I like where he's starting, and I think he'll continue to get better.

’08 Bears and ’10 Ravens games stand out to me. The Ravens game was quite possibly a masterpiece.

That said, he still has a long way to go. It would be neat to think that he could make it to Canton, but the Falcons are going to have to achieve at least one of the following:

1) Win at least two Super Bowls in his tenure.
2) Evolve into a more pass-happy team.
3) Be consistently good for a long period of time with perennial playoff appearances with middling success at the very least. (Think Colts of the Peyton era)

If that happens, Matty will make it to Canton.

But that’s still 15 years from now, most likely. Let’s wait and see what happens.

Agreed

1 SB might do it if he had the longevity to play into his late 30s like Manning or Favre.

I think the things on that list are achievable, and it would be really cool for it to happen. The point of the whole article is just that he’s off to a good start compared to other guys that have made it, no one knows how the next 10 years will go.

And the Ravens and Bears games are my 2 favourite ever football games. The Bears game got my brother to finally admit that “the NFL is really exciting”.

The Broncos game stands out to me too.

Yeah, we lost, but Ryan threw a perfect TD pass to Roddy who had one of the most untimely cases of the dropsies that I have ever witnessed.

Wow Mosugo, Great work and post.

Thoughts:

1) I’m scared to vote. I can pinpoint a few reasons, but it’s complicated. Suffice it to say, I’m withholding my vote, currently.

2) One thing to think about with any HOF projection is the era in which the player(s) played. Ryan is ostensibly cutting his teeth in a new, pass-happy NFL. Thus, he might need even great numbers than, say, Jim Kelly. Perhaps near Marino’s records to ensure enshrinement. Of course, he could just go the Troy Aikman route and be a slightly above-average QB who wins a lot of rings. (I’m drawing this argument based off how difficult it is to project WRs getting into the Hall. Several more seasons like the last couple could see HOF QB inflation. For instance, if Drew Brees declines in the next 2-3 years will he be an automatic HOF QB? With just One Championship [hopefully] and a handful of good years, won’t he be nothing more than a poor man’s Favre?)

3) Lastly, I again want to echo my sentiments of thanks, Mosugo. Great post!

by KMarch on Jun 16, 2011 12:47 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Oh Yeah

He came in to maybe the toughest environment a rookie QB has ever come into, not only was he the starter from day 1, but the franchise was at the lowest ebb ever and that is saying something for the Falcons.

Whether he is Canton bound remains to be seen, consistency game in and game out, and coming through in the playoffs remain as hurdles. This is his fourth year, and it will be interesting to see if he can take another step forward

Having MM as OC isn’t doing him any favors IMO.

Aaron Rodgers stats were much better than Ryan's

Unfortunately. He has 20 more TDs, 3 less interceptions, 2,000 more yards, and 1 more Superbowl title. His QB rating of 99.4 was the second best after Steve Young. He will however turn 29 this season and is in his entering his 7th season. Matt just turned 26 and is entering his 4th season. I think Ryan can be as good as him if he’s allowed to throw as much and have a stable of receivers like him.

The game has changed, but Marino, Young and Manning played in far more open offensive systems in their first 3 years than Ryan.

He has done some pretty elite things off and on for the past 3 seasons.

One can only imagine he will improve given the right players, which it seems TD is trying to do. I believe with a few playoff wins he will be worthy as long as his production slightly increases.

Nice post Mo!

I think MR does get into HOF if he wins the Falcons first ever SB, just like Brees gets in because of what he did for the Saints and NO. People don’t forget, and when it comes ballot time, they remember the career and the achievements. If Ryan brings us just one SB AND has regular season success and awards- probowls, player of the week/month, and continues to lead the falcons to winning records and playoff appearances and wins of course, then he’s in hands down. But, with the way the league is today, no SB, no HOF, without a doubt. He MUST win a SB to get in, and maybe even 2 if he doesn’t have consistent succes throughout his career as well.

The Manning comparison does seem to fit.

But a few differences.
1) The Falcons have a lot more talent on offense than the Colts did at the time.
2) Manning completed more passes and was the only guy opposing teams had to look out for.
So Ryan is in a better situation than Manning is in, so stats don’t tell the whole story there. It will be interesting to see if Ryan can handle a more pass happy offense with a (possibly) Turner in decline. If he can, Saints-Falcons games will somehow be MORE interesting.

with everything you said except for this point…

I believe that if MM can utilize the new weapons effectively and the passing game can spread defenses more then I see Turner actually being MORE effective on fewer carries…but that’s just me.

Manning had Faulk and Harrison

Manning had Marshall Faulk for his rookie year and he had 1319 yards rushing on 324 carries and 908 yards receiving on 86 receptions—ironically he led the team in all 4 of those categories.
Harrison was already there but he was not yet the stud WR (776 yards on 59 receptions) he was to become.

Wow…Faulk was a beast! I thought he was good for the Rams and the Greatest Show on Turf, but to be the #1 option on both rushing and receiving? That is crazy!

I forgot about Faulk. Although I’m sure he left after Manning’s rookie year for the Rams. And I thought Harrison didn’t arrive until a few years later. Well, Ryan has a better O-line, that’s all I can do to poke holes in the theory. That and prevent myself from having nightmares about Ryan turning into Peyton Manning pt deux. :P

BOOM-Reading is fundamental. My qualifier was the fact that Ryan is playing in Atlanta and none of those players played here. Maybe you could of said Deon, McDonald or Dickerson, but you didn’t. At least you used QB’s to try and slate my post.

Ryan does get quit a lot of attention nationally atm, but till the team progresses in the playoffs, he’ll fall off the radar nationally as bigger and better stats will prompt others into the spotlight. Either way, I do hope he continues down his path of progression b/c there are several stars void from HoF he could garner some justice for (Nobis namely) by earning his spot in Canton.
