Ten Worst Atlanta Falcons Draft Picks: Jimmy Williams
In this series of sponsored posts, we'll be looking at the ten worst and ten best Atlanta Falcons draft picks of all time. Let's start with the worst. Today's choice is former cornerback Jimmy Williams.
This may be a controversial choice. Already, I'm wondering if he should be closer to #10 than this, but I do think Jimmy Williams is deserving of this dubious honor. That might be because the sour taste is a lot more recent than most.
Why, you ask? It all starts with the promise. Williams was a 2005 first team All-American at Virginia Tech and came to the NFL with loads of potential. The Falcons had no first round pick in 2006 and spent the fifth overall selection in the second round on the cornerback, banking on Williams shoring up a weak secondary.
As those of us without short-term memory problems know, Williams didn't do a hell of a lot. In two seasons with the Falcons, he put up 34 tackles, three pass deflections and one interception. He was arrested in 2007 for possession of marijuana, put up a mediocre season with the Falcons and was cut by the new regime in 2008. From there, he latched on with the 49ers before earning a one-year suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Now 27, it's possible that Williams could wind up with another NFL team, but it won't be the Falcons. A frequently questioned work ethic, mediocre results on the field and a suspension are no way to get yourself off a list of all-time busts, and so here we are. I really had high hopes for Williams, too, but he turned out to be a colossal bust.

Ahh, I remember this one.
Don’t remember what happened to our first round pick but I remember wanting Jimmy Williams in the first round before we traded the pick away. I was kinda bummed about losing the pick since I figured we would lose out on Williams. I was at a movie when I got the news via mobile web that we had drafted Williams. Got a few dirty looks for the “woo” that slipped out lol. Boy was I wrong about this guy… I hate to label a school but man have we had bad luck from Virginia Tech or what?

I thought he was the best choice in the 1st and was extatic in the 2nd when we got him.
I mean, finally we get a big corner with speed and physicality! But no. No speed, no pop, no clue. The give away was when he couldn’t shake loose the starters on a very mediocre secondary.
How many more days, Lord, must I walk through the wilderness?
GO FALCONS!!
Glad to know I wasn't the only one

What a waste...
couldn’t stay away from the stuff….
Falcons, Hawks, Braves, Thrashers, & GSU Panthers: We gotta win one for Atlanta.
I'm pretty sure I read a little blurb about him in SI a million years ago
Saying he was an up and comer and a key blah blah blah. I think they were wrong. :)
He's bad but there's worse...
Bruce Pickens: 3rd overall pick 1991, 2 INTs in 41 games for 4 teams
Aundray Bruce: picked 1st overall in a draft which produced 13 pro bowlers in the 1st round (1988). Finished his career as a backup TE when he was supposed to be a stud LB.
Pat Sullivan (1972): top QB in college. Managed 5 TDs and 16 INTs in his career.
Brett Favre: a drunken buffoon who couldn’t tie his shoes in ATL, but cleaned up and became one of the best all-time QBs for someone else.
Just some older examples I’d put ahead of Williams. Yes, he’s more recent, but worse than Bruce or Pickens? No way. Here’s the pro bowlers picked after Bruce: Neil Smith, Bennie Blades, Paul Gruber, Tim Brown, Sterling Sharpe, Terry McDaniel, Michael Irvin, Ken Harvey, Keith Jackson, Gaston Green, Anthony Miller, John Stephens, Randall McDaniel, Lorenzo White, Craig Heyward, Chris Spielman, Eric Allen, John Elliot, Pierce Holt, Thurman Thomas, Ken Norton jr, Dermontti Dawson, Brian Blades, Michael Dean Perry, Eric McMillan, Tom Tupa, Greg Montgomery, Ferrell Edmunds, James Hasty, Chris Chandler, Bill Romanowski, Chuck Cecil, Cris Dishman and Jeff Cross. That’s why he’s the biggest bust.
Not through the list yet
More to come.

VT love
This is how we know Vick had too much power or Mckay had a VT crush. Hall was ok and williams wasnt even that good in college.
