3-4 Defense?

I know this subject has been brought numerous times before. As I look more at it I am really starting to change my stance on it. Out of the top 5 total defenses last year only 1 team ran a 4-3(NO) and there blitz happy. We all know that defenses win championships and keep you relevant in this league. We also all know that our defense has been our weak link for years now.

I have been avid for the firing of BVG. To me his schemes just seem vanilla and predictable. If we did switch to a 3-4 he would probably be the odd man out. I would like to see us get a disciple of Rex Ryan or of Dick Lebeauto run our D. The only problem might be if Smitty would allow some one new to take control of the defense. I think Smitty doesn't care as long as it improve.

Now the most important piece of this puzzle. Personnel. We have the players to run a 3-4 defense. On the line Babs and Peters can play NT. I feel Jerry is athletic enough to play outside at DE. Abe is also athletic enough to play DE or stand and play OLB. Bierman and Sid could cut 10-15 lbs and be very effective at OLB. Lofton is our MLB but Spoon can play inside as well. He played MLB at Mizzou. Our secondary(which might be weak in coverage) can hit. It would also benefit from more QB pressure. We still would be missing pieces but we could address those in the draft. Grabbing a Houston, Claybourn, or trading down and taking Reed would make more sense.

I always here how we want to get faster. How do we do it. Subtract a DL and add a LB. More and more teams are switching to 3-4 defenses. I think with the speed we have and being on turf it would really excel our defense if we switched to a 3-4.
