Around SBN: NFL Owners Vote to Change Trade Deadline

By Facebook's Count, Falcons Are The 29th Most Popular NFL Team

Photo

Really, guys and girls? Really?

It's an uphill battle to convince people to take the Falcons' fanbase seriously, and you're walking into a machine gun nest with a neon vest that says SHOOT ME. You can make the argument that there are deeply passionate Falcons fans and a lot of them, which you and I know to be true, but then you get the Georgia Dome walkouts

And then there's Facebook, where the Falcons are 15,000 Likes behind the Tennessee Titans and just above the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers! The bile is rising in my throat just thinking that the Falcons can barely beat out the worst team in the NFL for the cellar of these rankings, especially after the team just went 13-3 and are firmly in the midst of building a winning culture in Atlanta.

I know it's just Facebook and all, but man.

CIA didn't start it and they don't run it but I promise you they monitor it.

And it’s more than likely the NSA that is in charge of it. I knew a guy who knew a guy that used to listen and record random phone calls of US citizens after 911.

:) Wasn't expecting to be called out on that one, but...

Regardless of what specific dept oversees the work, the power structure and money lead to the same points., The only way for most people to accept it would be via the private sector.

No, I agree but there is so little that can be done.

Except exercising my right to own firearms and expressing my freedom of speech with it should the Gov’ment come imped’in upon my other rights. Till that day I ain’t to worried cause I can’t really do anything about it, anyway. Your Definatly right.

Makes it easy

for us to know who the bandwagons fans are after we win the super bowl next year.

P.S. I still don’t believe that half the people in my school were saints fans before last year.

I think that reflects the general commitment level of the fanbase

I love the Falcons and I am a diehard fan, but I can’t be delusional about the fact that our fan base is filled with an unusually large fairweather element that is quickly disinterested. As fanbases go, I’d have to agree that we are toward the bottom in terms of commitment level and popularity w/in the city. It pains me to admit that, but I must.

Now, there are valid reasons for it. First, few fan bases have suffered the way we have, and the franchise has a history (until recently) of putting a terrible product on the field. That’s not something you overcome in a couple of seasons – Atlanta is a very jaded city when it comes to pro sports. Second, we live in a city that is fueled more by college sports than professional sports. Third, Atlanta is an amazing city, but the downside of that is that it means a ton of people who live here who aren’t from here and consequently aren’t fans of the team.

I can’t think of another city in the NFL for which those factors apply, including places like Tennessee and Carolina. I hope things turn around here and I’m proud to be an Atlantan, but the lack of support for pro sports here is not something i’m proud of. It’s a knock on our city that I wish didn’t hold as much truth behind it as it does.

Dude this is just bad.

I always considered the Falcons as a team that people simply didn’t give a damn about. As in, they don’t know we exist. Indifference would put us in the middle of the pack, wouldn’t it? This just sounds like a hate crime.

Guys, really?

They did a real study based on viewer ratings last year and we were like 9 or something. Half the folks I know don’t even use facebook barely. Like me, I use mine 2 times a month. This is hardly a story. It is more an indication of the type of people other team fans have and no that doesn’t mean because they “like” their team on facebook it makes them better fans.

10 not 9 excuse me. That’s neilson ratings, that’s how they check veiwership.

Well, the story is

Lots of fans actively seek out their teams on Facebook. Either Falcons fans don’t use Facebook or they don’t care enough to like the team. I know it’s not a huge deal, but it rankles.

Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn

I don’t care if I’m the only fan of this team, I don’t care if the media doesn’t drool over us. Al Davis is a senile crypt keeper of an NFL owner but he was right about one thing “just win baby”. Admittedly, I came to this team because of Vick. I was a Florida State fan with no favorite pro team until the year we beat the hokies in the championship game, then the falcons drafted Vick. I was a braves fan, half my family is from Georgia, I loved the colors… Maybe not the best criteria for becoming a fan but the pieces fell into place and in the short amount of time I have been a fan of this team I have been through extreme highs and extreme lows. I’m still here. I stumbled across this site while googling draft info about three years ago. I watched from the shadows never joining or commenting for a while, then finally joined. I love this team unconditionally now and you guys (and any ladies we have in the house) feel like family to me. We may not always see eye to eye but we all support this team in our own way and we all want what’s best for the team even if we disagree on the means to get there. We could be the 33rd most popular team for all I care, it will only make it sweeter when we finally bring hat Lombardi trophy to the dirty south and watch all the reactionist “experts” come flocking to us like an oasis in an endless desert. We don’t need any more fans than what we have here on these boards and the ones that are lucky enough to be able to attend the games. Wether anyone else knows it or not we are the future of the NFL and the greatest sports franchise in the world.

Sorry for rambling on, I just had a lot of pent up football energy to get off my chest. LETS GO FALCONS!

I cried, epic.

Actually it’s funny how you came to like the Falcons. It’s how I feel about FSU now. I started watching college ball about 3 yrs ago because I was scouting draft prospects for the Falcons, nothing like a little rosterbation to kill a few hours on Saturday. I lived 5 yrs in central FL and was forced to listen to Bobby Bowden on the radio and while I wasn’t a real fan I always paid attention to the noles. Now it seems like out of all the teams I watch on Saturday’s I want the Noles to win more so than the others. In GA I’m forced to enjoy SEC and I do as a whole and I’d like for GA to win a bit I guess but I really don’t have any real emotional investment. Nope I think I’m a Seminole.

It's just the popularity of college football

and basketball (specifically in the Atlanta area more than other parts of Georgia)

But college football, the SEC, is so much a part of southern culture that it will always draw viewers away from the NFL teams in the south
(EX- Falcons, Panthers, Bucs, Jaguars, Titans, the Saints outside of this past year, Texans). I guess the one exception would be the Cowboys, but that’s it.

the reason is that most people don't want to see southern team succeed in the NFL,

they want to see yankee teams or Dallas win the superbowl. New Orleans doesn’t count and neither does Indianapolis

Yep -- a colleague at work told me...

The NFL “wants to see Packers & Bears” in the NFC Championship game. Talked my game, but after the SB had the couth to tell him congratulations. Falcs’ve never been a popular franchise, but I think we are building a great brand (to use a marketing term) as well as a great team of guys I like (as opposed to the Favre, Ochocinco, T.O., Dilfer, Millen, Shockey, Ray Lewis, etc.) that I NEVER want to read even one more word about…) Deliver me from the drones. I’d appreciate it.

We shouldn't be worrying about facebook!

We should be worrying about how the dome is still a quarter empty by the end of the first, and it’s only full from the second till half way through the fourth when people decide they wanna beat traffic. That’s why we aren’t taken seriously.

is this really a post?

this sounds more like an advertisement. i use facebook to speak with my friends overseas. i do not put alot of likes or dislikes. phishing anyone? i’m not interested in all the email that begins to come when i give out that info. i get most of my falcons news here & i like this site. i don’t believe that the measure of a fan is touting my beliefs to the world. i love the game & anyone who has met me, he/she knows i’m a falcs fan. i understand with the cba, there is not much to talk about right now.

by Rhino Shiva on Feb 23, 2011 1:55 PM EST reply actions

Trust me ...

We’re not on Facebook’s payroll. Dave raises a solid point here. Methinks it has something to do with the culture down South. Folks venture outside a lot. Not like some other cities. Plus it’s the off-season, there’s only so many draft and FA topics to address.

by James Rael on Feb 23, 2011 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

i really didn’t think you guys were in their pocket. you are probably right. southerners don’t really venture out with info in the same way up north. i understand, but i think we have a great fan base, even if we don’t go to the facebook fan group. just a comment

by Rhino Shiva on Feb 23, 2011 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed re: the fanbase ...

I’ve lived both down South and in the Midwest. Can’t tell you how prominent fair-weather-fandom is in the Midwest. It’s like milk and cheese; everywhere you look. Southerners take fandom to a new level. Heck, look how the Auburn tree incident was depicted. You’d have thought that Bama fan went on a murderous rampage or something. We don’t mess with our sports.

This is a slow time of year for content, truthfully

Not an advertisement at all. I’m just a frequent Facebook user and I was a little surprised that the Falcons were so close to the bottom despite having a large fanbase. Thought it might at least generate some good discussion, which it did.
