Falcons Week 14 Injury Report: The Wednesday Edition
Disclaimers apply, as usual. It's early in the week, some guys are sitting because they're getting old and Mike Smith wants them doing crosswords and complaining about kids these days instead of wearing themselves out practicing and others won't play and others will and blah blah blah.
With that out of the way, this is a fairly intimidating list of banged up birds, even if you discount John Abraham, Todd McClure and Tony Gonzalez and their sacred day of rest. That list includes Brent Grimes—Smith has already declared him out for this weekend, as a single tear rolled down his cheek—and Kelvin Hayden. The secondary is likely to be depleted again versus Cam Newton and the Panthers.
Unfortunately, other guys are hurting. Will Svitek did not practice with a groin injury and could somewhat ironically give way to Sam Baker if he can't go this weekend. Michael Turner is also struggling through a groin injury, which is very bad news given how inept the Panthers are against the run. If he's limited at all, we could finally see more of Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling.
On the defensive side of the ball, Stephen Nicholas didn't practice and is coming along slowly. Thankfully, he has Mike Peterson behind him, and Peterson was one of the team's best defenders a week ago. The Falcons don't have to rush Nickels.
There is a fairly lengthy list of guys who engaged in limited practices which you can read at the Falcons' site. I'll start worrying about them on Friday if that still holds true.

What is this "Jacquizz" thing you speak of?

Must be a type of screen play
"We did a lot of good things last year, and now we've got Julio ... That does nothing but improve the offense, and we expect to do better. That's our goal, to lead the NFL in everything. Every offensive category." -Roddy White
Screen play?
Still not following.

A loss Sunday
and all we’ll here about until week one of next season is how we gave up all those draft picks for one player, yet we weren’t one player away from a championship like we thought we were. It’ll suck, just like this chick I met in Orlando……seriously, she was terrible at beach volleyball.
Turner said he's fine.....i guess

Hopefully we can win the next two games...
Without some of these bangged up guys and have everyone healthy for the Saints game. This is gonna be a nail biting finish just to get a foot in the door of the post season. From then on my optimism is for some reason still pointing up even after all the inconsistantcy…when healthy and executing Falcon football we are very hard to beat. Lets hope our team has a moment of clarity or revalation.

Grimes
if he is out for the NO game, I will weep gently
I'm surprised there aren't more foot injuries

Seriously nervous aboutthis game
We SUCK on real grass…and the panthers just came off a big win. They have nothing to lose, so they’ll be having fun just playing football. With no Grimes or Hayden and Turner about 80%, I’m a little nervous to say the least. We can’t afford to lose more than two more games…and hate me all you want but I’ve already chalked up the trip to Nawlins as a loss.

Panthers lost two more DTs this week
both starters, I believe. Pretty sure we should be able to dominate the interior. Even little Quizz should be able to run up the middle on them.

Good news.
Too bad we have a penchant for helping backups get probowl votes

Off topic and Shocked
But nobody let me know about the secret that is D-Block over at the Falcons site? Pure entertainment.
Just one tidbit: Mo Pete (interviewing Matt Bryant and Bosher): Wasup with the black hoodies yall wearing?
Matt Bryant: Well we figured if we coming to D-Block we gotta come hard.
Genius. My appreciation for Automatic has gone up much more.

Turner
WILL Go. We need him, along with Snelling and Quizz. Don’t know why dirtybirds is nervous, I’m not, but I’m on the cautious side to say the least. This team will rebound. You gotta have faith in them. Smitty will have this team ready to go Sunday. Look at the Panthers D, for crying out loud. A 80% Turner is bound to do some major damage. Again, have faith.
Evil Falcon
this is normal
this time of the year, you normally expect to see your team depleted to some extent. some teams have multiple key players on IR, so we’re still doing well from that perspective.
onto the game. all these injuries on defense simply mean that our offense cannot suck and expect the D pulls it off. Cam won’t throw 3 INTs this time to help us. not that he’s much improved, but we have depleted secondary. problem with left tackle and your QB get rattled a lot? use more screens, use Quizz a more often, anyway, do something to adjust to what you team has at its disposal! The "Julio" trade will definitely be discussed for months to come
whether we make the playoffs or not.
Clearly we were NOT just “one piece shy” of a Superbowl run. That said, Julio has been better than Jenks in just his rookie year – he will continue to be a matchup quandary for DC’s for many years.
BUT – what did this do to the progress of the TEAM? We have been enjoying the system TD brought from New England: MORE Draft picks, not fewer; LOADS of talent to watch during pre-season, all cuts being painful because of the sheer number of prospects. Now we are down to hoping and praying we can find an UDFA to fill gaps which should have been anticipated long ago.
I begin to have flashbacks to the late-80’s and early 90’s, watching how other teams beat us: they always have an open guy 7-11 yeards downfield and their QB always sees them… while our QB seems to constantly be ducking pressure. THEIR QB always seems to get a clean throw off miliseconds before our rusher gets to him… our WR’s, when open, always seem to trip over a zipper in the turf just before the ball gets there.
I don’t want to go back to the days where the other team is just presumed to have more talent than we do, at almost every position.
The last time we were one piece shy we traded a first rounder for the honor of drafting Reggie Kelly
And what a magical 1999 season that was.
I'm a huge JJ fan but the Falcons gave up too much.
However, I don’t blame the team for trying to win-it-all-now. Considering the number of Falcons who will be free agents after this year, many of whom will not be with the team in 2012, it is understandable why management felt it had such a narrow window to win a Super Bowl.
Notable 2012 Unrestricted Free Agents:
John Abraham
Brent Grimes
Curtis Lofton
Tony Gonzalez
Harry Douglas
Eric Weems
Kroy Biermann
Thomas DeCoud
Todd McClure
Chris Redman
Jason Snelling
Joe Zelenka
