I had a lot to think about today after the loss. Refelecting back on the last 3.75 seasons of Falcons football since MIke Smith and crew have arrived. One thing that always sticks in my head, as I'm sure it sticks into many of you is this. In our 11-5 and 13-3 seasons have we over achieved? Or in some of our losses and close wins in are we underachieving and allowing mediocre teams to stay in the game and win?
How is it possible (going into today) that we could have the #2 rush defense, and be in the bottom 3 in pass defense. Looking at the Texans from last year to this year it's easy to say that it's coaching. And quite frankly, I can't come up with a reasonable argument to that. Houston added one big free agent to their defense after hiring Wade Phillips and suddenly they go from being nearly the worst defense, to the best.
On offense, I feel that we aren't effectively utilizing our personnel to their full extent. But I am not a coach, nor am I at practice everyday seeing these guys play. I think our offense is in an identity crisis right now, and has been all season long. Our minds want to say pass pass pass, but our bodies are saying run run run. I feel we have the players to become a lethal passing team, but you can't go from our offense the last 3 years to the Patriots/Colts/Saints/Packers in one year. It takes time to change your nature and identity. I think we tried to do that to quickly and has had a negative impact. I think Julio is a great player and will be great for us, but looking back it was absurd to think that one player would change who we are.
I'm not calling for Dimitrov's (and everyone else involved) head. But i think this can be a lesson learned for future drafts. And with his success in the later rounds, I don't know why he would give those up. I think the formula of one FA and hoarding draft picks is the way to go. We still need a pass rush, and Tony G isn't getting younger (despite what his stats say), and not having a first and fourth round pick is going to hurt next year.
To get back to my original point, I am starting to lean to the side of us being overachievers. We can't consistently beat the Saints or other good teams in this league. I think our O and D lines need a lot of work. I think our Oline coach has done about as good of a job as anyone can do with the players we have. I think it's time to start spending higher draft picks on lineman. I think it's time to hire a new d-line coach, and get a new offensive coordinator. The way the D has played the last few weeks has given me hope that BVG is still competent. However, MM needs to go.
I'm open to your opinions now...
