Falcons-Saints Second Half Open Thread
Falcons are down going into the half. Tensions running high. Referees as blind as Helen Keller and a fifth as intelligent. Drew Brees feted. And so on.
The Falcons need to step it up on D and not squander any scoring chances if they're going to catch up here, so expect them to come out strong in the second half. They really don't have a choice if they don't want to lose the NFC South.
GO FALCONS!

Now you have to decide
Do you tip your hand for two weeks from now? Do you play the same old shit that isn’t working? And then change it up for the playoffs?
remember BVG had a low IQ interview earlier this week.

Nothing should be saved
Winning this game means not having to play the Saints in 2 weeks. Besides, what do you think the Falcons have that Payton and Brees won’t have seen before? Some revolutionary new prevent defence?
I would like to see the Refs
take a refresher on holding during halftime
BVG is Not Going Anywhere Guys
Our Defense doesnt suck that bad statisticly, so therefore they are not going to fire him. We Are stuck with him

0-14 in the second quarter
and you know what? we won’t do any worse, because for the past 4-5 games our 3rd quarter woes officially moved to the 2nd quarter.
the first saints drive in the 3rd will be key.

Holding on Rogers???
very important call on quizz that was not holding to me. ESPN does not even care about the game they are more concerned about Brees breaking the passing record during their broadcast.
That was clear holding
but there have been some blatant holds on the Saints go uncalled
That was one of the most flagrant holds I've ever seen
Just because he didn’t literally “hold” him doesn’t mean it wasn’t a holding penalty.
This is starting to feel like the GB playoff game
We couldn’t get off the field on 3rd down, and the QB shredded our soft zone.
One positive in te first half.
Matt Ryan has had time to throw and is moving well in the pocket. If our defense shows up to the game we are in this thing

it wasn't that weak
If it were an OL that did it, you’d be saying it was obvious holding
You fire mike smith ass for allowing him mindlessly keep sending then out there
It starts with the coach. How can you be a dc and allow this mfer to keep running that soft shyt. You kill the head and the rest of the coaching staff body dies cuz ms is allowing it to happen..

here's the idea
abandon the soft zone altogether, pressure Brees all day long, hit him, even at the expense of those BS penalties.
make him feel scared. we’ve got nothing to lose, we’re in the playoffs anyway. the worst that happens is we lose, and come back to NO after his ass.

Dont cloud the issue with facts!
I think what sucks is that after a couple of games of building momentum...
We’ve gone right back to our bad habits. One unit shows up, then the other unit takes the next series off. Offense scores, then defense falls apart. Defense gets a pick, offense goes 3 and out.
That may keep you in the game against mediocre teams, but it gets you downs 28-10 in the 3rd quarter against the Saints.
This team needs to learn how to show up and stop embarrassing themselves. Stop getting something and then giving it right back.

People need to stop licking the Saints balls. I’m sick of it. They are a very good team, but they are not the juggernaut a lot of people keep making them out to be. They have an awesome QB, an okay running game, and a below average defense.

Get a stop, Quick Drive with a TD pass to Julio capping it off; 27-31
Probably allow the saints drive down the field and get a FG; 27-34
Probably go 3 and out and Punt; Same score
Force a Turnover probably a Pick
Drive down the field in the final minutes and get teh Game tying TD to Roddy; 34-34

It's only a helmet to helmet hit on a defenceless receiver that's illegal
Learn the rules before you complain for flags.
False
leaves both feet prior to contact to spring forward and upward into his opponent, and (2) uses any part of his helmet (including the top/crown and forehead/"hairline" parts) to initiate forcible contact against any part of his opponent’s body.
From the NFL website
“Anyone who leaves both feet before contact to spring forward and upward into an opponent and delivers a blow to the helmet with any part of his helmet will draw a 15-yard penalty.”

Lofton's helmet contacted Colston's
Admittedly the contact was incidental but there was still helmet to helmet contact. And I’m not even going to respond to Sinatra because you have no idea what the tules are. A hard hit on a defenceless receiver is completely legal. Don’t call someone else a dumbass when you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Roddy's career could be over with a shot to the knee like that.
That is an illegal hit.
No it isn't
It might be dirty or unfair but it is legal in the NFL rules. Helmet to helmet hits to defenceless receivers are illegal. Both of those plays were totally legal.
Yes, but...
what we’re complaining about isn’t so much that a call isn’t called as much as we (as a whole) are exasperated with the fact that if the tackler wore anything other than Black/Gold a penalty would be called.
No it wouldn't
Because the hits were legal. We have enough to complain about without making up errors by the refs. Both of those calls were perfectly fine.

I have zero enthusiasm about being in the playoffs now. People can talk about “What Green Bay did” all they want, but that is irrelevant.
But worse than that to me is how incredible it is that this team has had the same issues now for 2 years and can’t seem to fix them. It’s amazing. Offense comes through, defense falls apart…. defense comes through, offense falls apart.

Make no mistake, we were awful, Saints were great, we deserved to get beat
But man, there could not be a single more classless organisation in the world of sports than Sean Peyton’s Saints. A win is a win, whether it’s by 1 or 22 or 58 points. Good for him, they’re a great team and Brees is a good quarterback (still nothing compared to Marino but that’s another conversation for another time) but the running up scores just so there’s some sportscenter material is going to bite him in a big way if there is any justice in the world.

I disagree
It’s the NFL. It’s not youth football. They might play again in two weeks, and you can set the record against your biggest rival.
Don’t like having the score run up on you?
Don’t suck

I’m whining about how unabashedly biased and hoorible the officiating was all night that changed the complexion of the game. I just don't see this Falcons team making progress.
What was their record last year ? I know it we didn’t lose 6 games last year.
This loss counts the same as a 3 point loss
Fifth seed is still in reach. I moved on to the next game as of three quarter time.
Not that it actually had any impact on the game, because we played awfully anyway, but how about those zebras as well. No hold cause it was a screen pass? Is that even a rule? Defensless hit against Lofton, but none against whoever hit Reggie Kelly? Brees gets sacked and immediately looks for a flag instead of just getting up and doing his job. I’m amazed they called the excessive celebration against whoever put a bow on the ball.
I’m fairly sure there is a rule in the NFL rulebook that says it’s not a hold if commited by Bushrod, and if it’s against John Abraham all moves are legal. Pretty damn frustrating. It didn’t change the game at all, but still, just frustrating as hell.

How in the hell do you not knock the shit out of Brees when he’s got a lead that big and is lining up in the shotgun and throwing on you for no reason other than getting a record he could just wait to set next week?

D played their worst game all year
And we got stunted inside the redzone. A few different things here or there and it could of been much closer in terms of how many points we put up, but the D killed us today. I hated the calls as much as anyone
but let’s be honest, it didn’t impact the result. There were a few frustrating calls, but all the weird, bullshit Katrina-rule calls mostly came at the end of the game. That no-hold because screen pass ruling at the end was comical, but who cares. The result was the same whether it happened or not. Same applies for most ref calls. I don’t agree with them, but they’re not to blame for any of the loss. Don’t clutch at that.

Turner, I respect you...
but from the beginning the Katrina-Rule non-call rules were put into force. Or the Curtis Lofton “spearing”, or half the other calls.
Worst officiating ever? it’s close
The holding call was the worst one I've ever seen in the NFL
Didn’t impact the final score but something fishy was definitely up.
Yeah the Lofton one was comically bad, especially when there was a non call on our next drive
against whoever hit Kelly, blindide helmet hit and a non call. Even Gruden saw it, so that’s saying something. Aside from those two there aren’t too many penalties that actually changed the game. There weer frustrating calls and non-calls, and hilarious explainations, but aside from the Lofton one I didn’t see any of them changing the game.

The Lofton and Kelly plays were completely different
Lofton hit Colston’s helmet with his helmet. Jenkins hit Kelly’s back with his helmet. One is illegal and one isn’t.
Lofton hit Colston's shoulder with his shoulder
and the collision bounced helmets into minor contact.
Jenkins lowered his helmet, launched himself and speared Kelly in the back.
http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/penaltysummaries
Says Jenkins’ hit was illegal.
I know
I’m just beyond pissed off right now after that game. And still thing the no calls on holds for the Saints, the spearing on Lofton and the no call for the same type thing on our TE, the no call on the OBVIOUS offside etc. It was just so blatant that it was infuriating. I just think those killed some drives and could have changed things. But no point in crying over spilled milk

the offside wasn't a no call
it was a false start against Atlanta…. and no unnecessary roughness when NO tried to kill MR on that play.

yeah, really.
Most games we take away a call or two that were bad. This was one of those games (and I’ve seen this before, not just in games Atlanta is in) where you would literally see a penalty committed by one team, see a flag, and know it’d be called against the other team.
Ah yes, also forgot about the offside no call
Ryan sees the free play and just forces it out wide, no call. Again, no impact on the game, but comically bad reffing.

NO acts completely classless during a game.
Katrina Rules still in effect
NFL “____ must get this record tonight” rulebook added to the Katrina Rules for tonight.
and our team doesn’t show up to a big divisional game late in the year.
Why oh why oh why
The Saints have no class
Compare the Falcons behaviour late in wins over the Cardinals last year and Jaguars this year to this. We took a knee at the 2 against the Cardinals and literally let the Jaguars score a TD. Sean Payton is such an asshole.
He is a douche
But we need to play better D next time we play them and not sink to their level. Just knock them out of the playoffs
