Falcons-Saints Second Half Open Thread

NEW ORLEANS, LA - DECEMBER 26: Wide receiver Julio Jones #11 of the Atlanta Falcons celebrates his 21-yard first quarter touchdown catch with teammate wide receiver Roddy White #84 against the New Orleans Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on December 26, 2011 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

Falcons are down going into the half. Tensions running high. Referees as blind as Helen Keller and a fifth as intelligent. Drew Brees feted. And so on.

The Falcons need to step it up on D and not squander any scoring chances if they're going to catch up here, so expect them to come out strong in the second half. They really don't have a choice if they don't want to lose the NFC South.

GO FALCONS!

Now you have to decide

Do you tip your hand for two weeks from now? Do you play the same old shit that isn’t working? And then change it up for the playoffs?

by Hawes on Dec 26, 2011 10:11 PM EST reply actions

Nothing should be saved

Winning this game means not having to play the Saints in 2 weeks. Besides, what do you think the Falcons have that Payton and Brees won’t have seen before? Some revolutionary new prevent defence?

0-14 in the second quarter

and you know what? we won’t do any worse, because for the past 4-5 games our 3rd quarter woes officially moved to the 2nd quarter.

the first saints drive in the 3rd will be key.

Holding on Rogers???

very important call on quizz that was not holding to me. ESPN does not even care about the game they are more concerned about Brees breaking the passing record during their broadcast.

by AJ FalcoFan on Dec 26, 2011 10:12 PM EST reply actions

That was clear holding

but there have been some blatant holds on the Saints go uncalled

by Hutch11 on Dec 26, 2011 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

That was one of the most flagrant holds I've ever seen

Just because he didn’t literally “hold” him doesn’t mean it wasn’t a holding penalty.

This is starting to feel like the GB playoff game

We couldn’t get off the field on 3rd down, and the QB shredded our soft zone.

One positive in te first half.

Matt Ryan has had time to throw and is moving well in the pocket. If our defense shows up to the game we are in this thing

abandon the soft zone altogether, pressure Brees all day long, hit him, even at the expense of those BS penalties.

I think what sucks is that after a couple of games of building momentum...

We’ve gone right back to our bad habits. One unit shows up, then the other unit takes the next series off. Offense scores, then defense falls apart. Defense gets a pick, offense goes 3 and out.

That may keep you in the game against mediocre teams, but it gets you downs 28-10 in the 3rd quarter against the Saints.

This team needs to learn how to show up and stop embarrassing themselves. Stop getting something and then giving it right back.

by cheshire falcon on Dec 26, 2011 10:37 PM EST reply actions

and i'm gonna say this...

People need to stop licking the Saints balls. I’m sick of it. They are a very good team, but they are not the juggernaut a lot of people keep making them out to be. They have an awesome QB, an okay running game, and a below average defense.

This isn’t happening because the Saints are amazing… it’s happening because the Falcons aren’t as good as we hoped they were.

Learn the rules people

Helmet to helmet hits on defenceless receivers are illegal. Other types of hits are not. The Kelly play and the White one were legal.

by Mosugo on Dec 26, 2011 10:58 PM EST reply actions

Lofton's helmet contacted Colston's

Admittedly the contact was incidental but there was still helmet to helmet contact. And I’m not even going to respond to Sinatra because you have no idea what the tules are. A hard hit on a defenceless receiver is completely legal. Don’t call someone else a dumbass when you have no idea what you’re talking about.

by Mosugo on Dec 26, 2011 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

No it isn't

It might be dirty or unfair but it is legal in the NFL rules. Helmet to helmet hits to defenceless receivers are illegal. Both of those plays were totally legal.

by Mosugo on Dec 26, 2011 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

actually

If you read the rule it can be called anytime at Refs discretion. That was earlier call on Colston. Not helmet to helmet

by Rippers on Dec 26, 2011 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, but...

what we’re complaining about isn’t so much that a call isn’t called as much as we (as a whole) are exasperated with the fact that if the tackler wore anything other than Black/Gold a penalty would be called.

by falconnuke on Dec 26, 2011 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

No it wouldn't

Because the hits were legal. We have enough to complain about without making up errors by the refs. Both of those calls were perfectly fine.

by Mosugo on Dec 26, 2011 11:02 PM EST up reply actions

Winning tends to erase the bad calls

I’m not usually one to pick on the refs, but I think they’ve called a spectacularly bad game tonight. They’ve even made a couple of bad calls that went against the Saints.

But man, there could not be a single more classless organisation in the world of sports than Sean Peyton’s Saints. A win is a win, whether it’s by 1 or 22 or 58 points. Good for him, they’re a great team and Brees is a good quarterback (still nothing compared to Marino but that’s another conversation for another time) but the running up scores just so there’s some sportscenter material is going to bite him in a big way if there is any justice in the world.

This loss counts the same as a 3 point loss

Fifth seed is still in reach. I moved on to the next game as of three quarter time.

Not that it actually had any impact on the game, because we played awfully anyway, but how about those zebras as well. No hold cause it was a screen pass? Is that even a rule? Defensless hit against Lofton, but none against whoever hit Reggie Kelly? Brees gets sacked and immediately looks for a flag instead of just getting up and doing his job. I’m amazed they called the excessive celebration against whoever put a bow on the ball.

I’m fairly sure there is a rule in the NFL rulebook that says it’s not a hold if commited by Bushrod, and if it’s against John Abraham all moves are legal. Pretty damn frustrating. It didn’t change the game at all, but still, just frustrating as hell.

At some point you have to get dirty and not let these dumbfucks have their way with you.

Great game from the Saints

not a fan of the running up the score, but hey whatever, we didn’t deserve to even be relevant in this game so the score may as well show it. Thanks for coming over here with some class, much respect to you as an individual.

Hopefully the refs won’t be in the back pocket of the Saints now that Brees has the record

I hated the calls as much as anyone

but let’s be honest, it didn’t impact the result. There were a few frustrating calls, but all the weird, bullshit Katrina-rule calls mostly came at the end of the game. That no-hold because screen pass ruling at the end was comical, but who cares. The result was the same whether it happened or not. Same applies for most ref calls. I don’t agree with them, but they’re not to blame for any of the loss. Don’t clutch at that.

Turner, I respect you...

but from the beginning the Katrina-Rule non-call rules were put into force. Or the Curtis Lofton “spearing”, or half the other calls.

Worst officiating ever? it’s close

by falconnuke on Dec 26, 2011 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

The holding call was the worst one I've ever seen in the NFL

Didn’t impact the final score but something fishy was definitely up.

by Mosugo on Dec 26, 2011 11:58 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah the Lofton one was comically bad, especially when there was a non call on our next drive

against whoever hit Kelly, blindide helmet hit and a non call. Even Gruden saw it, so that’s saying something. Aside from those two there aren’t too many penalties that actually changed the game. There weer frustrating calls and non-calls, and hilarious explainations, but aside from the Lofton one I didn’t see any of them changing the game.

The Lofton and Kelly plays were completely different

Lofton hit Colston’s helmet with his helmet. Jenkins hit Kelly’s back with his helmet. One is illegal and one isn’t.

by Mosugo on Dec 27, 2011 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

Lofton hit Colston's shoulder with his shoulder

and the collision bounced helmets into minor contact.

Jenkins lowered his helmet, launched himself and speared Kelly in the back.

http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/penaltysummaries

Says Jenkins’ hit was illegal.

I know

I’m just beyond pissed off right now after that game. And still thing the no calls on holds for the Saints, the spearing on Lofton and the no call for the same type thing on our TE, the no call on the OBVIOUS offside etc. It was just so blatant that it was infuriating. I just think those killed some drives and could have changed things. But no point in crying over spilled milk

the offside wasn't a no call

it was a false start against Atlanta…. and no unnecessary roughness when NO tried to kill MR on that play.

by falconnuke on Dec 27, 2011 12:00 AM EST up reply actions

Well you know what I mean haha

The whole officiating job was just so bad and blatantly one-sided that I can’t get past it

by BravesDawg16 on Dec 27, 2011 12:01 AM EST up reply actions

yeah, really.

Most games we take away a call or two that were bad. This was one of those games (and I’ve seen this before, not just in games Atlanta is in) where you would literally see a penalty committed by one team, see a flag, and know it’d be called against the other team.

by falconnuke on Dec 27, 2011 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

Ah yes, also forgot about the offside no call

Ryan sees the free play and just forces it out wide, no call. Again, no impact on the game, but comically bad reffing.

Once again...

NO acts completely classless during a game.
Katrina Rules still in effect
NFL “____ must get this record tonight” rulebook added to the Katrina Rules for tonight.

and our team doesn’t show up to a big divisional game late in the year.
Why oh why oh why

by falconnuke on Dec 26, 2011 11:56 PM EST reply actions

The Saints have no class

Compare the Falcons behaviour late in wins over the Cardinals last year and Jaguars this year to this. We took a knee at the 2 against the Cardinals and literally let the Jaguars score a TD. Sean Payton is such an asshole.

by Mosugo on Dec 26, 2011 11:57 PM EST reply actions

He is a douche

But we need to play better D next time we play them and not sink to their level. Just knock them out of the playoffs

I like that asshole mentality

It’s called killer instinct and we don’t have it

There's a fine line

Payton is definitely on the asshole side of it.

Hey

At least Ryan went over 4000 yards for the first time in his career.

i dont know if Abe was getting held

or just couldnt get pressure by himself.

by Erihury on Dec 26, 2011 11:59 PM EST reply actions

Meh

We got our dinks kicked in. When Ryan’s throwing 52 times, the odds are good that we’re gettin’ an L.

Re: Ryan

Slow start but productive.

Re: Playcalling
Great for the scripted first drive, abysmal after that. How many running plays? Couldn’t have been more than 15.

Another positive

Brees will now be so expensive for the Saints to resign they won’t be able to sign Nicks or Colston. That’s the best guard in the league and Brees favourite receiver.
