one in a million. lol
The team in general is coming around, but the offense isn’t built to score that much. Our WR’s are either hurt or not good., and in some cases both.
At one point special teamer Kassim Osgood was our #2 WR with a practice squad steal as our third.
Well, you never know... Sometimes a bunch of points spill over into the weeks following...
It’s the NFL. It’s always anybody’s game.
Seriously doubt 40...
Our defense and special teams scored two of those TDs, and that just doesn’t happen every game. The offense scored 27. I think that’s a reasonable goal.
With the short week
what do you see being the least prepared part of the Jags?
The passing game for sure
Gabbert is surprisingly smart for a rookie, but he’s had no practice time with the receivers he’s going to be playing with this week, aside from Jarrett Dillard.
Also we might be out a kicker. Josh Scobee has been great all year, but he hurt his groin before the start of the Bucs game.
Not much to ask in my book
these 2 teams know each other very well. we scrimmage together in camp and play each other in the preseason every year it seems.
However, what is the team chemistry like, now that del rio is gone? Seems as if things may have been opened up on offense, is that the general direction of things – lets open things up and see just what these guys can do? Thanx in advance.
Now Gentlemen, get your butts up, and get back on that horse! You have no choice. The expectations are running much higher this year.
The team has had good chemistry per say
all season. Now the offense wasn’t necessarily playing together as a unit, so they didn’t have chemistry in that sense, but that was more of a case of not having an off season and cutting Garrard last minute and then starting a rookie shortly there after.
The defense despite having been almost completely overhauled has had great chemistry and has had very few issues either in execution or communication. The SD game we were exposed for having a little too much to overcome on such short notice last Monday night.
With the coaching change I do sense a slight difference in improved energy, but I think that has to be coupled with a few other things. We made a few upgrades with position coaches, at QB and WR specifically. We fired the WR coach and replaced him with the QB coach and replaced the QB coach with the OC coach, who continues to be the OC also. These changes should have been made a long time ago, because we actually saw regression with our receivers that were improving every year leading up to this year. And not to mention our former QB coach was never a proven QB coach and our former WR coach was never a proven WR coach.
The ownership change also gave the team along with the rest of the community a boost emotionally. Not sure why, because our former owner has been great to the team and community, but it did have an effect.

What was the general opinion at BCC over the Garrard situation?

General Opinion???
Not sure this is one. It really created a faction.
There was no consensus.
I was in the camp that wanted Garrard to play for another year while Gabbert got to learn behind him. If Garrard had this years defense last year, we would have easily made the playoffs in a year without Peyton Manning.
However there were many people that were tired with the status quo at QB and wanted Luke McCown starting until Gabbert was ready, but even more wanted to start Gabbert from the get go let him learn from this year. Most people that wanted Gabbert to start from the get go expected him to start out at Garrard’s level and only get better. But I think those people have finally either understood that Garrard was undervalued/underrated or they just believe Gabbert is already a bust.
Having said all of that, the point is moot because Garrard was injured. The move actually just saved us a bunch of money and it allowed Gabbert to get a head start on next year.

The impact this year
is fairly minimal. The roster is very easy to coach. Everyone is smart and none of them are knuckleheads. The GM cut all troublemakers and almost all of his draft picks were captains on their college teams, and none of them have quit in them.
However the impact next year might be felt from Del Rio getting fired. JDR getting fired opened up the door to the team totally gutting the coaching staff next season, which means a young QB like Gabbert would have to get used to another offense, when he’s just now getting used to this one. I’d prefer if he didn’t go the Alex Smith route to success and just let him get really comfortable in one system.
I think the biggest impact
isn’t from JDR himself. I think the biggest impact was the re-shuffling that followed at QB/WR coach.
As for opinion, I liked Jack, but I was in the minority. I think the late season collapses that everyone liked to blame him for were caused more by scheduling, injuries, and a young team. That said, the move was probably for the better. Sometimes, fresh blood in and of itself can be a good thing, and I’m excited to see what happen with the HC position.
Gabbert
Is he an NFL quarterback? I hear a lot of chatter about giving up on the guy considering he’s a first year, first round pick.

If you don't watch him a little
you know he’s got the tools. He has the arm and athleticism.
But he’s also a great decision maker even at a young age(Youngest at his position), and he sees the field really well, and the more he gets a handle of this offense the more he goes through his progressions. Which is hard to do in his situation. It is definitely not a rookie sanctuary here. The WR’s get very little separation and have troubles holding on to passes that do reach them. The offensive line is getting better, but it’s gone through it’s struggles with injuries and a rookie or 2 playing from time to time, including one rookie that was an UDFA from a division 2 school. And the system in general is as pro style as they come. Everything is done from the pocket. You don’t have any option plays and you don’t have a lot of boots or half field reads.
If you watch Gabbert enough, it’s easy to see that he is progressing and that he probably has a bright future. People outside the organization might be talking about acquiring another QB, but not in house. The whole teams believes he has a bright future and his behind him.
Good
It seemed crazy to me that a team would consider throwing in the towel on a talented kid after a bad rookie season.

That was an awesome video.
Much appreciated. I’m just glad we don’t have Donald Penn at LT.
Actually
Penn is usually pretty good. Mincey, the DE that trucked him is a super sleeper. He’s been our best pass rusher the last 2 years. That means even better than a healthy Aaron Kampman was last year. Not super fast, but very savvy and great great motor. He was a try hard guy that had to develop and work through a lot of injuries in his early career.
Wasn't my intention to dismiss Mincey any,
I just know Donald Penn looked like Humpty Dumpty on that first play. Mincey looked good in those videos, but Svitek is no roley poley out there at LT. If Sam Baker starts, consider me worried. Svitek plays, consider me cautious.
What's gonna work against Mincey is that
he’s a gameplanner and there just isn’t as much film on Svitek as Baker. Also, our CB’s are not our original starters, by any stretch of the imagination. We have a street FA in Ashton Youboty and a rookie UDFA in Kevin Rutland starting at CB.(Although Rutland was a sleeper pick of mine going in to the draft) So if our coverage doesn’t hold up, it’s unlikely Mincey will have enough time to get to Matt Ryan a la the Chargers game on Monday night.
I see your point,
and raise you a Sam Baker. T-Rex likes grabbing for penalties and falling over more than he likes creating a pocket. that may be a little harsh, but in all honesty, Baker finds ways to screw up plays much more than he should, and that’s why he’s been sitting.
is
MoJo going to run and catch passes all over us? Do you run screens effectively because we dont and cant cover them
We're getting better, Shockey screen aside
I’ve actually been pleasently surprised with our shotr pass D. Saints game was a masterpiece of defending the flats.

It think that's the gameplan
give MJD the ball. It’s been the one thing that’s worked all season on offense. Truth be told until recently we haven’t thrown to him much, but now that we are, it’s made a dramatic difference in helping the team move the ball. Gabbert has been going through progressions, to no avail, but rarely checked the ball down until recently.
Early in the season we were horrible at executing screens, partly because everyone on defense knew with our struggling offense and rookie QB it was one of the few things they had to look for. But now we’ve improved some in that aspect. Still, we don’t run screens all that often, but when we do they tend to work fairly well
I don't think we truly know
who will be our next coach. We have a brand new owner so who knows what he’s thinking. And our GM, if he’s anything like he is during the draft, will completely surprise people. He doesn’t go after big names in the draft and he might continue that trend with HC candidates.
But some of the names thrown around have been Jeff Fisher, your OC Mularkey, former Packers HC Mike Sherman, Jay Gruden.
My guess is that he will be a lesser known assistant coach, kind of like the Ravens’ HC John Harbaugh.
That
Maybe be the best way to go for you guys. Look at success Smith and the Harbaugh’s are having. What’s the mood around Jax about the new owner and team possibly relocating?

Well
no one wants the team to leave. In fact most fans go insane at just the mention of such a thing, so I would avoid the subject all together at BCC. lol
The team isn’t going anywhere. The original owner Wayne Weaver wanted to keep the team in Jax, and basically turned down an extra 40 mil that he would have gotten for moving the team to LA, by selling it to the new owner who he trusts not to move. Weaver was getting closer to his twilight years and wanted a way to keep his legacy in Jax and the new owner Kahn says he will. Besides there’s a bunch of money tied up in the stadium lease that makes it very difficult to leave. And the Kahns are even buying a house in Jax, a place they used to do business.
As for the mood about the new owner, I think the mood is good. Kind of like how a fanbase feels after drafting the QB they wanted in the first round. There is a lot of optimism about the team and situation. Everyone liked the Weavers and their impact on the community, but I sense a real breath of fresh air was breathed into the fan base and franchise with the sell of the team. Besides it can’t hurt to have new money brought in to the community and roster.
Good to
Know. Glad the team is staying. Need to get the fanbase built up a bit. Is there any indication of a logo and uniform change? This seems to happen when a new owner comes on the scene, and besides, we enjoy our preseason games and scrimmages every year!

No indications yet
The uniforms just went through a change recently, so I doubt it; but then again he’s not even technically the new owner yet.
It should be Mike Mularkey
He is an offensive genius. :D

LA or JAX?
Not game related but just wondering what the consensus is over there about a possible move after the sale? I live a couple hours from LA and have been a closet fan of the Jags (shh dont tell my fellow Falcoholics!) and it would be cool to have a team around that I can stomach. So tired of Faders and Bolts and Kobe’s…

both my boys lived there but they went to school (and graduated from) Vista High before coming up to No-Cal to live with me. One of my sons is moving back down to Oceanside so hopefully I will be able to take advantage of Aces’ invite and come watch some games with you guys (can’t really see it happening this year though). It would be sooooooooo awesome to watch a game with other Falcons fans in the room!!

The consensus
is they wont be moving. For reasons given in a comment above. Namely: the original owner sold it specifically to the new owner because he would keep the franchise in Jax, and there is also a lease that would make it very difficult to move the team.
How do you feel about the decisions your team has made
In particular, releasing D. Garrard, Drafting Gabbert (who looks like an absolute bust based on his numbers) and Firing Del RIo? I find some of these decisions rather unfortunate, because otherwise you guys may have seriously challenged for the AFC South.
Personally, I always thought Garrard was underrated (he posted a 90 passer rating, and he may very well have had the worst WR corp in the league) and was more than a little surprised when he was released outright. Especially since Gabbert has worst in most measurable stats. He’s only a rookie, but…that’s why you keep vets around right? to help mentor young players.
Well my feelings towards all of it is not shared by all
However before the season started pretty much everyone was happy about the drafting of Gabbert. Many of us liked Garrard, but some thought he was holding the team back, but in both cases we knew that he needed to be replaced eventually.
And from there there were 3 groups of people:
1. Wanted to keep Garrard until Gabbert beat him out.
2. Wanted to cut Garrard and let McCown play until Gabbert was ready.
3. The third group thought Gabbert was gonna come out already better than Garrard and or that the starting experience would get him ready for next year.
Personally I wanted to go route 1. I like the Aaron Rodgers route, and I thought Gabbert could have developed while Garrard led the way to the playoffs this year. I thought last year’s offense with this year’s defense easily could have gotten into playoff contention.
But if you ignore the numbers and watch Gabbert closely, he doesn’t look like a bust. He looks like a rookie that’s developing, which he is.
I guess my perception of him
is colored by the other rookies around him. Do you ever look at Newton, Ponder, Locker, and Dalton and think “man, our FO really screwed up that pick. I wish we had one of those guys”?
A lot of people do think that way about the other QBs.
All it takes is one of those jaw-dropping throws that really showcases his arm to remind me what we’re hoping for. I think Gabbert will be a very, very good QB, but we’ll know better in about a year. I think his coaching was lousy this year, and it’s unfortunate that it took until recently for the QB coach to be moved elsewhere. Gabbert’s very raw, and everyone wanted him to be polished right away.
I don’t remember if Garrard played in our preseason game, but basically, he looked pretty terrible all preseason. It was a little surprising when he was released, but it was understandable. We later found out about a back injury that needed surgery, so I don’t know if that affected his play or not. Nevertheless, he probably wouldn’t have been much use to us this year if he had stayed on the roster.
Also, I don’t think you keep vets around as mentors. You keep them around until you have a young guy who can play at least as well as them. Players play. Coaches coach. If players mentor other players, it’s a bonus, but it’s not why you keep them around.
Sometimes
I wish we had Newton, but he wasn’t available anyhow. But even then, I think over the length of their careers I believe Gabbert will probably be the best of them. Kind of like Peyton Manning his rookie year vs Vince Young his rookie year. Gabbert is developing the tools to win long term vs just performing for the here and now.
Dalton has been good this year, but he reminds me some of Colt McCoy. They are both winners, but have some limitations and are at a disadvantage physically. Like Colt, I believe Dalton will get figured out and slowly regress into averageness.
Locker is a good player with good tools and etc, but every time I see development from him I see regression. Like he’s at his limit above the shoulder if you know what I mean. He could develop, but he might take a lot longer. Until then he’s gonna have to rely on his athleticism. He’s probably already a better player than Matt Hasselbeck.
Newton is a beast. Even if he doesn’t develop much he should be able to make plays to help his team for a long long time. It might take another off season to see if his arrow will continue to point up.
Not trying to be a dick
But most of your assessments seem to be Jag/Gabbert homerism which I can’t fault you with too much.
Dalton has shown wayyy more then Colt ever showed. Colt was never even average so he couldn’t have regressed to averageness nor has Colt been a winner(in the pros). Dalton has looked very good on what was predicted to be one of the worst teams in the league. He reminds me more of Brees then Colt physically and Brees has certainly shown that the less physically capable can be very very good.
Not sure how you can really say anything about Locker since he has only played parts of two games and in those games has looked pretty good.
I really don’t see the Peyton and Vince vs Gabbert and Newton. Peyton outside of turn overs was great his rookie year much like Newton not Gabbert. Gabbert more so reminds me of Eli where, again no offense, he was pretty terrible his rookie year but eventually turned out pretty good.
I don't really think it's a homer thing.
Maybe a little. I do see Dalton as being better long term than Ewdtrey believes. I’ve seen both Dalton and McCoy in person, and Dalton was clearly the better of the two to me. I didn’t see anything that screamed weak arm like I did with McCoy.
I don’t think Peyton vs. Vince was supposed to be a perfect analogy. I’m pretty sure he’s just saying that he thinks the guy with the worse rookie year may end up with a better career.
I wasn't exactly comparing
Peyton to Gabbert. They are not on the same level and may never be. I was just trying to give a parallel. I agree Gabbert is probably closer to Eli than Peyton, but he’s probably somewhere in between. And physically speaking he’s superior to both. But the parallel is to speak of the type of QB’s they are. Gabbert, Eli, and Peyton are pocket passers that rely on know their offense extremely well, while Cam Newton and Mike Vick used their athleticism to get by, at least to begin with.
As for Locker…I’m not basing much on his performance in the NFL. I’ve watched him for years when he was in college and I’ve watched him try to progress.
And I may sound like a Jag/Gabbert homer, but I’m realistic about the team. Before the season started, on BCC, I constantly harped on Gabbert’s weaknesses and his need to develop. I said we needed to let him develop on the bench while Garrard had the reigns. My thoughts on Gabbert have been the same since before he became a Jag.
Cam is the one guy that I’ve really underestimated.
And Dalton is similar to Colt and I hold to that opinion. Before the team really went to poop even Colt was a winner despite having no running game, no receivers and nothing at LG, RG, or RT. He won 2 of his first three games including wins over the Saints and the Patriots. And in college he had a ton of wins in fact he had the record IIRC.
I get what your saying
And agree with most, however I still think Dalton will be great and don’t see much McCoy in him.
Another question how do the fans feel about Gabbert. Just looking at this team, if it had last years offense(plus a healthy MJD) and this years defense they are contending for the playoffs. So are most fans disappointed and think Gerrard or another vet QB should have been brought in for a run(although I don’t know who, Gerrards bad back seemed to really ruin this route), or do they feel starting Gabbert early was the way to go and these are just the growing pains of a new young qb?
There are a lot of people crying bust.
Sunday’s game helped a little, but it’s going to take a lot more than one game to convince people otherwise which is understandable. There are certainly people with short memories who don’t remember how terrible Garrard looked in preseason. That said, there are also people who realize not every successful QB situation plays out like Andy Dalton, that some are more like Troy Aikman. Even some of the bust-criers, though, realize nobody will really know about him until sometime next year.
Dalton
and Colt are so similar it’s not even funny. They are the same height and weight within an inch. They were both big time winners in college. Both of them have noodle arms, although Dalton’s is a little stronger.
The big difference between the 2 is Dalton had an easy schedule to start the year, but even he’s been falling behind now that he’s hitting the harder part of his schedule. Dalton has Simpson and AJ Green at WR, while Colt has injury prone Mohamed Massaquoi and Mr. Dropsies himself Greg Little. Dalton has a veteran OL, while Colt has two rookies at guard and a glass man at RT. Dalton has a top 7 D and Colt has the 31st run defense in the league(Worse than the Colts). Dalton has former 1st round pick in Cedric Benson and Colt has had to work with the 4th RB on their depth chart in Chris Ogbonnaya.
I have to give you that Dalton is a little more accurate and he’s very clutch on third down. Give it another year, and I bet Dalton will come back to earth.
As for how the fan base feels about the whole Garrard situation and etc…. They aren’t upset we don’t have a vet QB taking us to the playoffs. They are just upset we’re not in the playoffs. We haven’t been since 07 and we’ve been in contention for a large portion of the season the last couple of years.
Truth is, as late as Garrard was cut, there weren’t a whole lot of options to replace him.
And a lot people did want Gabbert just to go through the growing pains, but it’s just that: painful
So some people are saying bust because they see Dalton and Cam doing well and they don’t take into account all of the factors.
Gabbert is a very young QB, the youngest in the NFL and the youngest ever to have started as many games as he has. He hardly even had any experience before being drafted. He played only 2 years at Mizzou. And before that he hardly played QB in high school because he injured his shoulder and had to play WR. And when he did play in college he played in a weird system where there was no pocket and he didn’t play under center.
And like I said before, about the situation he’s in: He had no off season and unlike Cam and Dalton, Gabbert wasn’t getting all the reps because he wasn’t supposed to be the starter.
He has nothing at WR. In fact the WR’s we’ve had regressed with the new coaching staff. And the ones that start showing promise get hurt. Our starting WR for the majority of the season in Jason Hill couldn’t catch a simple slant pass to save his life, not to mention the inability to run a proper route.
And to make matters worse the TE’s have not been on the same page with Gabbert. Lewis is the type of TE that likes to catch high passes and passes downfield, and not 5 yard drags with a low fast ball from Gabbert. They are just now getting onto the same page, and it’s shown in their play.
How is the Jag's D-line holding up?
Vic Ketchman was a daily fixture of mine for years but I’m a little out of the loop this year. Has Knighton continued his stellar play from a couple of years ago? Alualu is supremely talented but how is he progressing? The Falcon’s interior line play has been diabolical at times so that could be a big match up against the pass and run.
Losing Kampman was obviously huge but is his replacement coping alright? On the other side I really like Mincey, how is he looking?
Thanks, I haven’t managed to see a Jags game as yet this year.
by J.D. Schillinger on Dec 14, 2011 9:27 AM EST reply actions
The D-line has been pretty banged up this year.
A nagging injury really hampered the development of Alualu. A medically supervised off-season ought to work wonders for him. That said, even with his knee bothering him, he’s played above average. Knighton was also out several weeks with an injury, but he’s still a monster when he’s healthy and motivated enough to keep his weight in check.
GM Gene has done a good job of finding talent to fill in it DE. Matt Roth was solid for a good deal of the season, but he’s been out for several weeks now with injury. We found a hidden gem in John Chick as a pass rusher, but he went down for the year a couple weeks ago. Our draft pick from 2010, Austen Lane, was good enough to find a place in the rotation when the season started, but he also went down earlier in the year.
We’ve been playing primarily with DT Leger Douzable at the DE spot across from Mincey, and he’s filled in admirably. Alualu’s gotten a little play time over there, and I can recall at least one instance in which Daryl Smith put his hand on the ground in a passing situation on Sunday.
Mincey’s looked very good. He’s stellar, and he’s gonna bring it every snap. Ewdtrey posted a video above going over a little game tape of Gabbert’s improved play from Sunday, but that video also shows some nice footage of Mincey. The video shows him affecting Josh Freeman on Sunday on plays that ended in intentional grounding and sack/fumble/TD.
You know
even with the injury to Alualu, he’s been slowly getting better in recent weeks. He had a sack last week and he’s been in the backfield a lot more recently, especially against the run. He somehow makes these quiet impact plays.
Also Matt Roth is out for this game, with the same concussion he suffered in the Monday Night game against the Chargers.
Douzable, Roth’s replacement at LDE, has been very good for a former DT. If he didn’t have the fat on his belly he’d be an ideal 2 down LDE. He keys in well on boots and runs, but he still has a lot of learning to do regarding the position. But in a one on one situation he’s surprisingly good. He’s like a tall Lamaar Houston from the Raiders.
Unfortunately we are extremely thin at DE because of injuries and are using a combo of Alualu, a waiver pickup in George Selvie, and 43 OLB Daryl Smith to pick up the slack.
I agree that Alualu has shown improvement.
I just think he would be a monster without the injury.

Actually I’m happy he’s the first owner, player,… anything important… of South Asian descent to be affiliated to the NFL.

On a more football related matter, I'm bringing up Tim Tebow.
I know their was some talk of drafting Tim Tebow back in the 2010 NFL Draft. Is there a overall consensus that fan’s would’ve wanted Tebow as their Quarterback then or now or are you glad you guys didn’t go in the Tebow-mania route.
At the time of the 10th pick, they’re was no way he was going that high. Would he have been a target should he have dropped into the second round? Was their talk of dropping down a couple spots to get him?

Obviously
with being in Jacksonville there were people that wanted Tebow to be drafted. But generally speaking the fans that were Jag fans first didn’t want to draft Tebow.
As for the front office. I don’t think there was any plan to draft Tebow before maybe the 4th round, and it wouldn’t have been as a QB. He probably would have switched to TE, H-Back, or FB.
There are some people wowed by Tebow's recent win streak, but...
I’m in the camp that believes Alualu will be a dominant player and Tebow will fade, even as a big Florida fan. Fans that paid attention probably know how many teams close to us in the draft order had their eye on Alualu. Tebow die-hards and people who thought drafting Tebow would sell tickets may have hoped for a drop down to get Tebow, but there was no way that was going to happen. There would have come a point in which Tebow would have been draftable, but we had traded away our 2nd and 3rd round picks even if those rounds were options.
