Falcons 21-Colts 7 Second Half Open Thread
The Falcons had to come in and convincingly smack the Colts around. So far, so good.
Julio Jones has been a beast, Corey Peters and Kelvin Hayden came up with big plays and Matt Bosher seems to be hitting his stride. The Colts, meanwhile, have averaged under four yards a pass attempt.
Matt Ryan hasn't had a great day outside of two huge passes to Julio Jones, but otherwise the team is playing at a very high level against inferior competition. Let's hope they keep it up.
GO FALCONS!

Are people really complaining?
The Falcons are up 21-7, and are about to receive the ball to start the second half. They’re playing away. You can’t get better than that in the NFL. This is a really good position to be in.
I think a lot of people just want to see that ever elusive "complete game"
It would just be encouraging to see Ryan playing better.
But yeah, you gotta feel good about the win at this point.

I think Matt's heads a little screwy from getting pounded all season
He’s nervous back there and with good reason. Our line has been piss poor most of the season.
I haven't watched the complete game,
but how many hurries/QB hits/pressures has he had this game? Line’s been looking good, from what I can tell.
He's been kept pretty clean so far.
Freeney had one minor hit on him, but other than that I think he’s been good.

Okay, big quick exposition, and I promise this will be the last thing I say about this
I’m not calling for Matt Ryan to be benched. I just want him to play better. I need for him to play better, because if Julio doesn’t show up as a beast today, we could be tied in this game. I mean, he could easily have dropped that one deep TD, he could easily have failed to score on that second TD.
I’m not rushing to judgment. I thought we were going to be a Superbowl contender this year, but Matt Ryan has failed to measure up all year. It’s been a problem that’s developed over the entire course of the season-he has a Pro-Bowl Tight End, a Pro-Bowl WR, and a superstud rookie, and this passing game should be better with those parts. I admit the part that Mike Mularkey has played in restricting our effectiveness, and I know that our offensive line has struggled as well, but so has Ryan. If this team is going to make the playoffs, and especially if they want to do well in the playoffs, then it has to come with improved play from Ryan.
It’s not that I have ridiculously high expectations for him. I’ve just watched him miss plays that he should defniitely be making, and making throws he should not even be attempting to make. His decision making has gotten poorer, his throws are looking…not that great, and today he’s looked pretty terrible when he’s open receivers and plenty of time to throw. I just want to acknowledge that THAT IS A PROBLEM.
My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

I think it’s hard to have a rational conversation about this because people read that and jump the conclusion that you’re saying “Ryan sucks! Bench him!”
That’s not it at all… it’s a matter of simply asking the question “Is Ryan going to be the QB we all hope he’ll be?” It’s just dealing with the fact that in a QBs 4th year, you don’t want to see what you’ve seen from Ryan this year. Doesn’t mean he sucks or that he should be benched. It’s just acknowledging what the stats themselves seem to say is a problem.
by cheshire falcon on Nov 6, 2011 2:57 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
If this was an isolated incident, I might be inclined to agree with it being a real problem
but Philip Rivers is sucking, too, and he’s a pretty good QB (save your personal judgments of him)
Freeman, the media’s child, is sucking as well. Freeman put up good numbers last year.
Matty put up good numbers last year. He’s struggling this year. We needed the OTAs and whatnot.
I don’t like it, but I’m not worried. We’re doing alright.

but you've seen Rivers be consistently great for long periods of time
I haven’t seen that from Ryan. You saw flashes of brilliance the first couple of years with the standard rookie mistakes. The problem is that the mistakes haven’t gone away the way you’d expect them to with an elite, top tier QB.
That doesn’t mean he’s screwed or that we need a new QB. But as a Falcons fan, it’s hard for me to just pretend that Ryan is great and everything is fine.
What I want from Ryan is consistency… i find myself nervous everytime he drops back in the pocket because i’ve seen so many bad throws. I just want to see those bad throws becomes less common, and i don’t feel like i’m seeing that.
by cheshire falcon on Nov 6, 2011 3:03 PM EST up reply actions
But, we've seen Ryan be better. So, we know he can be.
We see him play better in the no-huddle this season. So what’s the real problem?

Yeah, that's true
And really, the defense has looked really good lately. Ray Edwards has gotten better, and Spoon is a freaking force, and Lofton is just pure solid. The only problem we have on defense is that we give up too many long third downs, but that actually IS a problem against a guy like Brees.

Third downs really are the biggest issue.
Explosive plays have been (seemingly) kept in check. Run D is playing well. Let’s just hope the defense has a 3rd down conversion stop rate like they did against Detroit.

They've scored less but looked better in the 2nd half.

Only problem I see with Quizz is a bump to his legs will take him down pretty easily.
I do enjoy watching him run the ball though

Should be just Snelling and Quizz for the rest of this game
Don’t need to do much more.
My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.
