Fantasy Help from Your Local Falcoholics

Time for a new thread, so have at it, folks!  It's getting to that time of year where it seems like every win is grinding it out.  A lucky break either way can mean making or missing the playoffs.  I'm sitting at 4-4 and need to get at least another 3 wins to sneak into the playoffs.  As we all know, once you get there, anything can and often does happen.

Looking to spice up the playoffs in your league?:  Last year my league start implementing a +5 homefield advantage during the playoffs (so that it somewhat simulates the real NFL playoffs).  Personally, I like it in that it rewards the higher seeds and allows them to negate a bit of the luck that inevitably occurs from week to week.  However, like the Super Bowl, there is no homefield advantage bump for the championship.  I had some doubters in the league at first, but it really amplifies the intensity of the playoffs now.  Highly recommended for all the serious leagues out there.

As always, we welcome your questions and general fantasy tidbits.  Try to be specific about your type of league and the matchups the players you're asking about are facing.

Agreed.

Who knew this thread would be such a hit? Great job thus far and in the future my man, I’ll try and be around to help answer more. Life is kicking back these days haha.

Yea, good job KMarch!

I thought about doing a fanpost about FF at the beginning of the season but chickened out. U blow the doors off anything I woulda done tho!

Thanks guys

I can’t take too much credit though, b/c what works is everyone coming to share their opinions. I’m fairly certain I’ve been wrong as much as right. I think it’s just a place where people can get validation for what they were already thinking of doing. Plus, it’s just plain fun to talk fantasy.

BJGE is always risk. Kevin F'ing Faulk led the way last week

I always stay away from pats. Battle will get the carries to close the game out but while the games close he will split time with Jones and McCluster. Benson will get the ball period but he’s a 3 yards and a cloud of dust guy. I’ve got Battle and Benson on my team as well. Remember those Titan run D stats are skewed because if that horrific game against Houston. They’re bad but not that bad. if u need more chance of an upside, Battle. If u need safe points I’d go with Benson.

by aces666high on Nov 3, 2011 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd go with Law Firm (BJGE)

BB has shown that he likes to run him in big games, and I’ll think they’ll be trying to play a little ball control to keep those Giants WRs off the field against their atrocious pass DEF. Benson and Battle are fine, esp. in TD only leagues, but they are both going up against pretty stout run DEFs this week.

by KMarch on Nov 3, 2011 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I think I'd go Benson and Battle

And Battle if you can only take one.

My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

unfortunately, there are only so many good QB fantasy parodies.

I think if someone was going to do one for Matt Ryan it would have to be in the style of Foreigner’s ‘Cold as Ice’

You’re as cold as Ice.
Willing to sacrifice your health
Listen to my advice
Or you might pay the price, I know…

I’ve seen it before it happens all the time

Here's a fun one

I have 4 WR slots to fill. PPR league w/bonuses for long TD’s. Right now I have Roddy, Lloyd, Green and Victor Cruz in. Sitting on the bench I have M. Manningham. The pats are a choice fantasy opposition w/their horrid secondary and Nicks may be out. Who, if anybody would u sit to get Manningham in?

by aces666high on Nov 3, 2011 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

I'd do this

Green, Roddy, Manningham, Cruz. If Nicks plays, then I might sit Cruz in favor of Lloyd, but depends on which QB is starting I guess. Don’t sit Manningham regardless, though. He’s been getting the most targets of all the NYG WRs the last 3 weeks.

Hey guys in one of my FF teams i am wondering whom to start in the WR/RB flex position between Julio Jones,

Demarco Murray, Jon Baldwin and Steve Breaston?
In another FF league, Mario Manningham, Jackie Battle and Julio Jones in the WR/RB position?
In another one, whom TE should i start between Gronkowski, Hernandez and Gonzalez? What a problem i know lol. I think Hernandez will have a better outing than Gronk, but Gonzo has the best matchup.

by PatNation85 on Nov 4, 2011 2:04 AM EDT reply actions

Are any of your leagues PPR?

Standard I would go
Murray
Manningham, Nicks might be out, and they are up against your patetic pass D, no offense, but it is pretty lackluster ;)
And damm a TE grp… Gonzo should be good for 4-6 rec and around 60 – 70 yards, might toss a TD in, if you feel either of the pats TE might do better take that, think you have better knowledge of them than all of us here ;)

if PPR then I would defiently pick either Manningham or Jones in your 2nd question, which one will depend on whether Nicks is out or not, start Manningham if nicks is out otherwise start JJ, because of JJ is 2nd option in our pass O and manningham would only be 3rd if nicks start

by PatNation85 on Nov 4, 2011 2:11 AM EDT up reply actions

At flex

I would start Tolbert, he is the only healthy RB in SD right now… I should know, have mathews in a league and tried to handcuf with Brinkley, neither of them have praticed this week.

At WR I would start either Washington > brown > Decker, depends on PPR or not and have you see the BAL/PIT Match up, D game or a fireworks on O ;)

by DanishFalcons on Nov 4, 2011 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Tolbert's definitely the right start

For your second WR, all those guys are about equal. Brown probably has the highest upside since he’s most likely to get a long TD.

by KMarch on Nov 4, 2011 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Problem at WR and RB

Standard Scoring,

Start 2 RB of Matt Forte, Demarco Murray and Jackie Battle.. I know Forte is must start but the other.. Got MJD on bye this week

Start 2 WR, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown, Santonio Holmes and Anquan Boldin, Right now I have Brown and Holmes in lineup, but not sure about that Bal/Pit game, mighttunr out to be smashmouth defense game

And lastly 1 Flex WR/RB of the above, atm it is hold by Battle but not sure if I should start a WR instead

by DanishFalcons on Nov 4, 2011 8:58 AM EDT reply actions

Damn forgot to add

TE in same league
Vernon Davis at WAS
or
Fred Davis vs SF

by DanishFalcons on Nov 4, 2011 9:10 AM EDT up reply actions

2 RB: Forte and Murray

2 WR: I’d prob. go Julio and Boldin (who looked unstoppable when he wanted to be last week). Santonio might get enough targets to be worth a start.

Flex: Holmes or Battle, with Holmes having the easier matchup, just not sure what their gameplan is going to be in that game. I think that DEF will make it pretty hard for BUF, so I don’t expect a shoot-out. MIA can be hard to run on, and Battle is almost solely dependent on goal line touches.

by KMarch on Nov 4, 2011 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Vernon I guess?

SF has shut down some TEs, WAS is not much easier on TEs, but that’s your better matchup.

by KMarch on Nov 4, 2011 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for reply :)

Will probaly go Vernon, Fred apparently have some sort of inj, but he has praticed this week

by DanishFalcons on Nov 4, 2011 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd definitely take Vernon.

But either one should be solid.

RBs I’d go with Forte and Murray, I just have a gut feeling Dallas actually smokes SEA and ends up running the ball a lot.

WRs is much tougher. I think you really ought to play Boldin over Brown, simply because Brown can have a couple nice catches, but Boldin has the ability to take over the passing attack. I guess the 2nd WR can be a gut call of your own, I’d go Holmes, but I’d be intrigued by Julio to be honest.

by CubFan90 on Nov 4, 2011 11:06 AM EDT reply actions

Simple question for now.

Standard non-PPR league, Demarco Murray (SEA) or Manningham (NE)?

by CubFan90 on Nov 4, 2011 11:13 AM EDT reply actions

wow that's a tough call

def. Manningham if Nick’s is out. I think he might go for at least 100 either way. SEA have been tough against the run, but you’re right in that it could be a blowout so Murray would get a lot of run. Guess I’d still go Manningham.

Dez and Julio?

Atlanta will win a championship....someday

by maxxj3 on Nov 4, 2011 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

I can't help but like Anquan.

Plax’s upside is some red zone looks. Antonio Brown’s upside is a long TD bomb. Boldin’s upside is being the best part of their offense outside of Ray Rice. I go Boldin all day long.

by CubFan90 on Nov 4, 2011 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah prob. Boldin

though, with Sanders officially out now for PIT, Brown’s value does rise a little more.

by KMarch on Nov 4, 2011 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Trilemma!

It is looking like Hakeem Nicks is out in a game where he would have completely dominated. Great.

Now I’m left with one WR spot to fill with Deion Branch, Nate Washington, or Jon Baldwin. Just picked up Baldwin b/c it’s a keeper league, and he may turn into something down the road. I’d have to be really convinced to start him. I think Nate will get more targets, but the Cincy DEF is no joke. That leaves me leaning Branch in a game that be non-stop passing. Counters?

by KMarch on Nov 4, 2011 5:03 PM EDT reply actions

Baldwin

He’s the #2 in a pass happy office against the #31 ranked passing D. Baldwin looked like a beast last week also.

What WR to start??

Non-PPR league with bonuses for long TDs. Pick three:

Jonathan Baldwin
Santonio Holmes
DeSean Jackson
Antonio Brown
Victor Cruz
Julio Jones
Mike Wililams (TB)

by Schuang0385 on Nov 4, 2011 5:09 PM EDT reply actions

How big is the bonus?

Out of those, I feel like Desean Jackson is a must start/ Mike Williams is a must Bench. Too inconsistent. I like Holmes, just not his QB. Not sure about Julio this game… the falcons should be running the ball and he is coming back from an injury; they’ll probably work him in slowly. I admit, I don’t know much about Baldwin. So I would go with:

DJax
Cruz
Brown.

Cruz and Brown are hot right now. I like other options over Brown (see my post below), but he is being targeted a lot.

I agree with this assessment

D-Jax, especially in a league with a bonus for long TDs, is a must.

I’d definitely go with Cruz, he’s hot and getting a lot of targets.

I might go with Baldwin over Brown, though. The Chiefs have really gone pass-happy without Jamaal Charles, and Miami’s Pass defense is weak. I’m sitting Williams, and I’m not really excited about Julio this week.

My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

by Bronn on Nov 5, 2011 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks

I am definitely starting V. Cruz, but I’m concerned that D-Jax is playing against a cover-2 D that is designed to take away the big play. With Vick going to J. Mac and McCoy in the holes of that D, I am just not sold 100% on D-Jax for this week…

I like Baldwin over Brown also, but I keep going back to Julio…against a bad Colts D, without a TD and his first game back in two weeks…I feel like he’s prime to explode…

With 7 quality receivers, I’m having a hard time choosing the other two…I currently have D-Jax, Baldwin and Cruz in, but I am very tempted to put in JJ…

arrgh

I have no idea who to start. PPR league:

Antonio Brown
Deion Branch
Victor Cruz
Darrius Heyward-Bey
Wes Welker.

Welker clearly starts. So, I need two out of the remaining. Thing is, I play Tom Brady this week, so starting Branch might be a way to mitigate a big game from him. Victor Cruz is hot at the moment, and going against a busted Patriots defense… so I am looking at him as my number two. DHB has been coming on of late, And I think that he might be in for a big game against the Broncos. Of course, there is Antonio Brown, who leads the steelers in targets and seems to have a good rapport with Big Ben.

GEEZ. Decisions. Any advice Falcoholics?

by KEScottII on Nov 4, 2011 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

Recommendations

In a PPR, Welker, Cruz and Brown would be my choices. The fact that A. Brown received 11 targets last week alone is outrageous and he hauled in 6 or 7 I believe. He’s a great fit for what the Steelers will try to do against the Ravens.

by KEScottII on Nov 4, 2011 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, they definitely can put a team over the top

I agree with Schuang’s diagnosis. That’s the way to go. If you’re concerned with just getting 5-8 points, you might think about going Branch over Brown, but either way you should be good.

I'm desperate for a RB

I have three RBs – Sproles, MJD on a bye, and Ryan Matthews injured.

I have an opportunity to trade for LeGarrette Blount. He wants Matt Ryan. Ryan is averaging 5+ points/game more than Blount, and Matty is my backup QB behind Brees (bye week 11). I don’t think I can make that trade so I made a counter offer, but I don’t think he’ll take it.

So two questions: Would you trade Ryan for Blount straight up? What do you think of the following counter proposal: Blount and Colt McCoy for Ryan and James Jones?

never mind - I got an even better trade

Gave away Matt Ryan and James Jones and got Philip Rivers and LeGarrette Blount. My trading partner was really upset with Rivers and just as desperate for a new QB as I was for a RB.

I was so happy. Then I found out the trade isn’t finalized until Monday morning! I think the other guy is going to be even more upset than me when he realizes he won’t get to start Ryan against the Colts.

Wow. Awesome trade

You should be ecstatic, b/c both Rivers and Blount seem to be due for big 2nd halves.

by KMarch on Nov 5, 2011 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

oh yeah, I love the trade

but I still need a RB for today

And now because the trade is already accepted, I can’t drop any players involved in it to pick up a spot starter in place of Matthews. Despite his constant little injuries, Matthews has actually been really good for fantasy points this year. Right now, I’m 9th in waiver priority, so there’s a pretty good chance anyone I drop will get picked up before I can get them back.

I’m looking at D.J. Ware as a possible good spot starter right now. With Bradshaw out, Ware should get a fair bit of work this afternoon. Since the Giants and Chargers are both late games, I can wait to see how my fantasy game is going. If Matthews is out, and if it looks like the 6-12 points I expect from Ware will be the difference between winning and losing, then I’ll probably drop Matthews for him and hope for the best – in today’s game and for getting him back.

Much Ado About Nothing

My team scored 139 points (non-PPR league) … with only one active RB. After the early games, I felt confident enough to win, so I left Matthews in the starting lineup. Julio was a monster, V-Jack was a monster, and even without a score Welker put up very nice numbers. Oh, and thanks for the 50 yarder Rackers!

Do you guys know something I don't?

I picked up Julio Jones on waivers this week (dropped Bernard Scott) and intend to start him as a 3rd WR. Seems like he should have a big game against Indy. I read that he had recovered nicely from the injury and was full in practice this week. Am I missing anything?

Only one thing

We don’t know how much they are going to use him ;) Might take bring back slowly and only give him like 50% of Offensive snaps or they can let him go full… Thats the unknown factor, so if you have a good feeling, then start him, but what are your other options?

by DanishFalcons on Nov 5, 2011 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Indeed

Smitty has a habit of bringing back players slowly after Turner infamously reinjured his ankle in the middle of a playoff push.

It seems to have been plenty of time to recover from the hamstring, though. When he was completely healthy he was our leading WR, so don’t hesitate to start him still. I am.

by KMarch on Nov 5, 2011 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree, but...

Here’s the one guy to throw a wrench into what could have been an easy decision based on the two recommendations above…I was discussing this scenario with a fantasy fanatic like the rest of us and he and I agreed that Julio seems primed this week. Factors:

1. INCREDIBLE match up
2. Two weeks of study and you know he’s dying to play
3. NO TD’S yet…

This could be the week that J. Jones goes for 100+ and 2TD’s

With Bradshaw out, I want to give Jacobs a shot, but I have a sickening feeling that Coughlin will give a boatload of carries to DJ Ware. I also have Jackie Battle who got me some decent points last week… Any advice?

Battle no doubt. Jacobs won't get much done against the Pats run d. Not to mention with our pass defense, Eli and co.

will focus much more on the passing game. Jacobs may get that many opportunities. While Battle will get a number of snaps to carve that Phins run d.

They're both equal shots for TDs

MIA is probably better at Run DEF than NE. If you play either though, you’re basically hoping that both OFFs get to about the one yard line and want to pound it in.

Pats Run DEF

gets the benefit of a lot of teams not getting to run against them, b/c they have to keep up with the pats. Their Run DEF, and DEF in general really isn’t that good. I like that you want to come here, but please don’t keep confusing your homerism for the Pats with reality.

Week 8 notes

-…I don’t wanna talk about it.

Questions:
Rivers or Cassel? Seriously, it’s reached that point.
Mendenhall or Miicheal Bush? (D-mac is out)
V-Jax, Rice, or DHB? At this point, its basically a toss-up between these guys.

by Starrk on Nov 5, 2011 9:48 PM EDT reply actions

I'm not sure how well the Packs front 7 plays, but their secondary is weak. Rivers may easily get 300+ yards in that game,

while Cassel may not pass for as many yards as Rivers, he may get around the same td’s (2 or so). I’ll go with Rivers, as he’ll be forced to keep pace with Rodgers.

by PatNation85 on Nov 5, 2011 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Just my opinion...

I’d go with Cassel. The Dolphins secondary is a joke and with J. Baldwin emerging, the Chiefs are joining the likes of everyone else in the NFL and have opened up their playbooks. I think 250 and 3 TD’s is a reasonable expectation against the Dolphins with Cassel. With that said, I’d go with M Bush against a bad Denver team. Great match up and DMC ran 150 in week 1. I’d sit DHB, but I think you have options with V-Jax/Rice. I think Rice actually will see the ball more than V-Jax in what should be a pass first offense in Seattle against Dallas who will control the line of scrimmage. So long as T-Rex is behind center, I vote for Rice.

As the clock is ticking down toward kick-off

Michael Bush, Michael Bush, Michael Bush.

I’m not touching Mendenhall against the Ravens’ D. Michael Bush is going against a middling run defense, with an uncertain QB situation (so they’ll run the ball a lot) and he’s always looked good in games where he’s filled in for D-Mac.

My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

First week 9 note...

switched Boldin with JJ 10 min before kickoff on the gut feeling in one of my leagues against the leader, So far it worked out pretty well leading with 60 points so far, just have to wait and see.. He has a pretty stacked sunday night team but atleast I have Forte left, so I feel comfortable
