Around SBN: In Crunch Time, Spurs Don't Change Their Game

Where do we rank in the NFC SOUTH?

The Atlanta Falcons have had a delirious season so far if you ask me. Lucky for us, the NFC SOUTH has been just as crazy. The New Orleans Saints have looked like the best team in the NFC at times but struggled against the Carolina Panthers and lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and St. Louis Rams. Regardless of the Saints struggles they still rank  2nd in points, 2nd in yards and 1st in passing yards per game. Next is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they have looked simply lost at times and have to depend on Josh Freeman week in and week out to stay somewhat close. There wins haven't really been impressive and the 48-3 lost to San Francisco was a complete embarrassment to the NFC SOUTH. The Carolina Panthers has also looked like one of the best teams in the NFC but clearly they do not know how to win games. Cam Newton is the real deal and has kept his team in every single game with his feet and his arm. He has exceeded expectations in Carolina and has brought life to the city. Finally, our Atlanta Falcons have just looked decent at best. The transition to an "explosive offensive" was not such a good idea and now that we have gotten back to our ground game our team looks much better. Matt Ryan is not having his best season but is still the guy I want leading my team. Michael Turner is back and rolling and our defense is looking better each week.

This is how the Atlanta Falcons rank in the NFC SOUTH.

Star-divide

Total Offense: 4th with 335 yards/game                               Total Defense: 3rd with 364 yards/game

Passing Offense: 4th with 222.3 yards/game                      Passing Defense: 3rd with 265.6 yards/game

Rushing Offense: 3rd with 112.7 yards/game                      Rushing Defense: 1st with 98.4 yards/game

Scoring Offense: 3rd with 158 total points                            Scoring Defense: 1st with 163 total points

cool fact : Falcons are 2-1 when coming off the bye week under Mike Smith.

Well we are over .500 with a real shot at the title so....

Time to forget the past and focus on winning. Man I sound like a real NFL head football coach.

It depends on week 10

This Sunday, regardless of who wins (bucs@saints), it helps us. Now week 10 when we play the saints, will tell the tale. The bucs acheuke is insane after this Sunday and us and te saints will duke it out till the final week.

actually - it would be better for the Saints to win

assuming Falcons split the series with the Bucs and Saints, if it came down to a tie at the end of the season, the Bucs would have an extra division game win over the Falcons (assuming they both sweep the Panthers – Bucs 5-1; Falcons 4-2).

I’m rooting for the Saints on Sunday.

Well if you think about it.....

It is better that the bucs win. Divisional matchups only count if there is a tie in thhe division. It’s more likely that the bucs will wind up with less wins than the Falcons and Saints, they have a tougher string of games than us and the bad guys. I’d much rather have a 5 seed wild card than a first round bye, call me crazy. I see the Saints and Falcons locking down a wildcard and playoff spot with the bucs kicking around near the top of the list of the non playoff losers. I think is the Bucs win we will have the upper hand over the Saints in the conference and I’m not worried about the bucs actually winning more than us or the saints because of the brutality of their schedule.

Rec'd

I would say we would definitely have had some troubles on offense, but for the most part I think we’ve made our yards count. We’re 10th in the league in scoring offense (but only 3rd in the NFC South). Also we are 9th in the league in scoring defense, and 1st in our division. I think that’s a characteristic of this team, is playing well inside the 20’s on both sides of the ball.

our speed on Defense

makes it really hard to score inside the 20’s and inside the 20’s with Turner Gonzo and White is really hard to defend ha

Good work man

I think the Falcons have more upside than any other team in the NFCS. Once we get everything clicking, we’ll be pretty darn good.

thanks man

but yeah i agree we havent really played our best and we are still right there

I like to look at these stats....

Points scored / Points Allowed

Points scored by the offense, not the defense…. it seems a lot of teams can run up the yardage even though the final score is close. Perfect example, this past weeks Steelers/Patriots game. Off the top of my head, the Patriots gained 230-250 total yards while the Steelers gained 400-something yards. But the difference in the score was only 8 points (6 until that freak safety at the end)

So, with that said… there’s only a few stats that are important to me.

I don’t care if we defied the laws of football by not being in the top ten of anything but were still winning.

Oh, and the Bucs didn’t embarrass the division, they embarrassed themselves. Damn right, too. At least when we get blown out nobody seems to care.

great point

Well at the begining of the season the NFC South was consudered the best division.
Now after about 8 games its not looking like it.

by Marques D Chaney on Nov 2, 2011 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

how about Points/yard (or yards/point)

Kinda gives a more accurate value of offensive efficiency, since who (except for Saints fans) cares if your qb throws for 60 yards on a drive if he throws a pick and it’s all for naught?

I think we're going to finish with the Wild Card

And I think right now, the Falcons are the second best team in the division. The Buccaneers have a better record than they’ve played, I think.

Love ya Dave

But we’re a better team than the Saints. No matter what type of weapons they have on O, their defense could be exposed by a high school band.

by DopeFalcons on Nov 3, 2011 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

If only winning the NFC south got you a ticket to the superbowl

But it doesn’t so who cares. We still don’t win this division unless the saints collapse. Ill give us the wild card which Im still iffy on with the Bears, Eagles, Giants, or Cowboys and the Bucs possibly fighting for a spot as well.

Yea, I don't care

once you get into the playoffs, just be on fire, and the SB is yours….
