Falcons-Saints Series History

Hi Falcoholics, Back for another installment of the series history of the Falcons 2011 opponents. This week, we'll go over the Saints. The Falcons lead the all time series, 45-38 dating back to 1967, when the Saints won the first ever regular season encounter, 27-24. There have been some rather exciting games between these two down through the years, and this year should hold true to form. Before I get into some of the games I like, there was the 1973 season opener when the Falcons blasted the Saints, 62-7 at old Tulane Stadium. The Saints had eight turnovers in that game, and I believe the Falcons scored on everyone of them. I would have to go back through my records to confirm this, it's been thirty eight years since that game! There has been five ot games in the series, with the Falcons winning four of those. Now, my favorite games of this series to date: Both 1978 games, when the Falcons "Big Benned" the Saints both times, 20-17, the first 1979 game, in which the Falcons won in ot when Russell Erxeleben (spelling is wrong) goofed big time on a punt, and the Falcons scored to complete a comeback. The 1991 second game (another ot) in NO, in which the Falcons CFB (came from behind) on national TV to win, 23-20, thanks to Michael Haynes big plays. The 1991 playoff game, of course, more Michael Haynes, and another CFB, after being down 10 entering the fourth quarter. My favorite game of this series was the first one in NO in 2010, might of been one of the best regular season games all season. I think that we all know the details to that game. Just simply awesome. Another OT game, 27-24. As for this Sunday's game, I think it will be another one of those close ones. The Saints are banged up a little, and that is to the Falcons advantage. As long as Drew Brees is manning the helm, they will be right there. I expect a huge game from the defense on Sunday. Look for some big plays to be made, especially up front, putting pressure on Brees all game, throwing off his timing. This game will be won defensively, I think. As far as the offense goes, I see Turner having a good day, along with JJ, Tony, and Roddy. I think HD is going to be seen and heard. Matty Ice will just keep plugging along, and Matt "Ice Water" Bryant will contribute as well. I see a 31-24 Falcons victory in this one, give or take a few points. This game is at the ATL, so we'll successfully defend our turf. To be honest with all of you, I really don't see the Falcons losing hardly any more games this season, they are playing a lot better since the beginning of the season, and the defense is playing exceptionally well. I'll be back next week with the Titans.
