Before last week I would of said yes
McCarthy’s style has been to put up a good sized lead and then slow down the game running the ball and turn it over to the defense. After a couple of too close games because the defense is not at last year’s level yet he decided to just bury the Broncos this past week. A part of me would not be surprised if he continues this going forward to make sure the team learns to finish games.
Good news for Falcon fans is that O-line looked much weaker without Bulaga in there. So protection for the Packers might be iffy.

What's going on with your D?
It’s been rather Falcons-esque, dare I say, in the gaps I see available in your zones. Plus, what’s going on with Matthews? Have OCs found a way to stop him?
The defense has been shaky, yes,
But if you look around the league, there have been a lot of tremendous passing games by quarterbacks. I think it’s a record for most games over 300 or 350 yards passing in a four-week period in NFL history.

Oh the D
The D hasn’t been awful, just not as good as last year. Right now the main problem is a lack of pass rush and bad coverage from the ILB’s. Each of these things are old tunes that date back to 09 and even under the previous defensive coordinator. It’s something that can be worked out though so I’m still hopeful that the D can continue to be good enough.
As for Matthews….well since he really doesn’t have a running buddy to pressue the QB with he is facing double and triple teams regularly. Despite this he is still getting good pressures and has done a great job of attackiing backs in the running game. His stats aren’t that great, but he’s still a pretty good disruptive force.

Falcons still don't have a great pass rush though
A whopping five sacks on the year so far, good for 31st in the league

Missing Babineaux has hurt alot, and Ray Edwards hasn’t really been a factor so far this year.

Ray Edwards
Us Packer fans are relatively familiar with Edwards. He’s the kind of guy that will get his sacks in bunches, and disappear in other games. If he can put it all together and be consistent week in and week out then you have yourself a gem…

How's the running game going?
I’ve noticed Grant has been quiet this season, but I haven’t heard any rumblings about Starks either.
Grant was out this past week against the Broncos.
Seemed we didn’t really need him, but we’ll probably know more about whether or not he’ll be back as the week goes along.

It's there
Our running game is a lot better than it was last year, but it isn’t something we rely on. As you may be aware, the Packers pass to set up the run. So we don’t run the ball nearly as often to teams like the Falcons. When both RB’s are active, they share the load. Starks will get more handoffs out of the shotgun formation due to his abilities as a receiver and blocker. He’ll get his fair share out of the other formations too. He’s not classified as a 3rd down back though. Grant will get more handoffs out of the I-Formation and Singleback Formation, but he doesn’t play often out of the Shotgun Formation.

how exciting the game could be ifboth offensesthe Falcons’ offense shows up.
Don’t be so humble
Now my question:
Is James Jones now the 5th option on the offense?
by a hooter's baby on Oct 3, 2011 12:36 PM EDT reply actions
At least
1. Jermichael Finley
2. Greg Jennings
3. Jordy Nelson
4-8. Donald Driver/Randall Cobb/James Starks/Ryan Grant/James Jones?
A lot of Packer fans are on the “trade James Jones” bandwagon, but I see absolutely no reason to do so. He is capable of some amazing catches (there’s a play he & A-Rodge have perfected; AR throws at his feet & JJ cradles the ball, and keeps it off of the turf, insuring that only JJ & not a defender catches the ball), and his salary is not very high. So what if he’s way down the depth chart? He’s ready to fill in as a starter if injuries strike the WR position, and he’s probably on the other teams 4th or 5th CB if we’re lined up in 5 wide. I personally think the coaches aren’t putting him on the field enough, but maybe they’re saving him for bigger competition, and don’t want to tip their hand too much.
James Jones as the 5th (or lower) option is not an indication of his talent so much as an indication of all the other talent on the roster, which, is fine by me.

It's actually quite interesting
Couple weeks ago Kevin Seifert (NFC North blogger @ ESPN) wrote a piece about Jermichael Finely. In it he outlined the playing time of the receiving options of the Packers and the break downs were really interesting. Basically there were about three tiers of playing time to it where the top tier was Finley and Jennings, then Driver and Nelson, and then finally the last tier ended up being Jones and Cobb.
Just one of those things that I find interesting about this year’s Packers and how they are going about balancing the talent on offense.

I assume being in $EC country
That you guys had seen him in college. I had never heard of him until GB drafted him, but he has definitely turned out better than expected. Honestly his main issue right now is getting on the field. When Finley is counted, Cobb is the 6th WR on the team and only has 8 targets so far.

Rule #1: Double tap.
by Ball Hawk on Oct 5, 2011 9:43 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Agreed
He’s been successful in his limited opportunities. Eventually he’ll get more chances, its just a question of when. With James Jones signing a contract in the offseason, Jordy Nelson signing a 3 yr deal about a week ago, and Jennings not going anywhere it’s going to be tough to find those spots. Driver will retire soon, but if Finley resigns there will still be a huge logjam at the receiving position.
"I'm here to talk about the economy today -- about the need to get four quarters of strong, consistent performance. That wasn't another Jay Cutler joke, I swear. It could be, but it's not."
Knowing the playbook.
And game experience are keeping him sidelined but once he gets going he’ll be a beast.

by Ball Hawk on Oct 5, 2011 3:02 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Honestly
He’s sidelined because of the logjam of talent at WR. From everything I’ve heard, he’s an incredibly smart player who’s a quick learner. He’s a great talent, it’ll just take some time to see the field as anything more than a KR/PR/last WR off the bench.
"I'm here to talk about the economy today -- about the need to get four quarters of strong, consistent performance. That wasn't another Jay Cutler joke, I swear. It could be, but it's not."
He's already made some great plays
I think Kuhl is right that it has more to do with the guys above him on the depth chart than anything else. (Although, both of his TDs in the opener vs. NO were later revealed to be “mistakes” on his part).
13.
Grossman: Sup, you insulin needing bitch! The sex cannon has arrived! Now get the hell out of my locker room, you chinless mother fucker!
Playbook
Right now thats whats holding Cobb back. In the saints game when he scored the TD, he actually ran the wrong route. Same for his 60 yd reception last week. Pretty sure that was the case. He was drafted to be our PR/KR for a couple years and take over for Driver in the slot when Driver retires, which is likely after this year. Driver is a starter in name only. Nelson now is the #2 WR and #3 overall reciever. Next year Jones and Cobb will both move up the pecking order a little when/if Driver retires.

Jordy really started showing up in the Super Bowl in February.
The way he’s playing, he’ll probably replace Donald Driver in our offense if/when DD hangs it up. Also, Jordy just signed a three-year extension, making him the likely starter once Driver is gone.

Yes and No
That’s a really good question Dave. We all assume that our players will improve each offseason, but how much they improve is the big question. All offseason we couldn’t tell who was better: Jordy Nelson or James Jones. Nelson has clearly made huge strides in his development though and is solidifying himself as Green Bay’s #2 WR. Although Donald Driver is our #2 WR in name, Nelson is really the #2 WR on the field. I can’t say I anticipated Nelson being as productive as he has been so far. Nelson leads the team in YAC and is currently ranked #3 in the NFL in YAC. That was James Jones main area of expertise last year.
One game at a time...
Jordy
He is our new version of Javon Walker. Didn’t look too good early in his career, started to step up late last year and is now playing to his draft position. He had alot to learn about running routes and being a WR on the NFL level. Was a HS QB and only played WR for 2 years in college. Last year Jones and Nelson were equals and share the #3 WR role. Jones, IMO, wasn’t expected back and McCarthy didn’t really have him in the plans for this year and that partially explains why he hasn’t played much. Packers probably thought he was long gone and were surprised they were able to keep him. I really think Jones wasn’t in McCarthys’ plans this year as he was expected to be gone in FA.
Nelson tho has really stepped up and continued the play he started to show end of last year. Starting w/ the Falcons game last year in wk 12, he is only 10 rec and about 100 yds behind Jenning in production. So he has been elevating his play alot since the end of last year. Not just in the playoffs and SB.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
Do not look at this until later

Seriously, though, I think you guys are underselling your team. I expected a blowout of the Broncos, they’re simply not there as a team yet. Matt Ryan has his troubles on the road, but at home he’s been really great. The playoff game last year was kind of a result of snowballing. I think it will be a much closer game than that, and will look more like last year’s regular season matchup (without, of course the special teams meltdown by the Packers). Something like Packers 31-Falcons 27.

I agree
I don’t expect this matchup to be a blowout. Last year’s playoff game was just the Packers playing perhaps their best game of the year and the Falcons not showing up. That doesn’t mean the Falcons should just give up based upon 1 game, because they did win a close game in the Regular Season last year.
One game at a time...
Good Grief.
Our own fans are already throwing in the towel. If memory serves correct, we did beat this very same Green Bay team last year, but it gets overshadowed by the massacre that happened in the playoffs. People stop forgetting that Matt Ryan has only lost to three teams all time in the Dome and no score has been as bad as it was in the playoffs.
Unlike the city’s representatives that play at Turner Field, this team in large part shows up in the bright lights. Aaron Rodgers is a problem, but I have faith that we’ll make a game of it.
However, Matt Bosher will without a doubt put the ball in Cobb’s hands quite a bit which creates more problems than we need.

There were other things as well
Rodgers fumbled near the goal line. Weems had a huge return at the end of the game just after the Pack took the lead. Lots of things like that which swung the moment in a close a game.
Really the first half of the second game had much of that same feel to it. The Falcons can win this game, much better than a couple of the other games we played this year. Ryan is double tough in the dome, and the Falcons don’t typically make many mistakes.

Also
Aaron Rodgers was our goalline running game at that point in the season. Ryan Grant was injured, James Starks wasn’t active yet and Kuhn hadn’t really emerged as a reliable short down guy. IIRC, Rodgers ran multiple QB draw plays near the end zone, because the only other option was to hand the ball off to Brandon Jackson (a solid blocker/reciever as a 3rd down back, but an awful ball carrier.)
That’s a huge improvement this time around. Not only does Rodgers have Finley back as a red zone target, but there are multiple reliable rushing options near the goal line.

I know I don’t see this game as a gimmie. I’m not sure the Falcons are quite as good as many were expecting, but this is still a very good team who is able to roll with anyone in this league. It should be a great game.

Aside from Bosher...
this team IS still as good as all expectations!
Problems have been execution (mostly on the OL), OC and DC not adapting to changing game situations, being TOO predictable on offense and Bosher.
Did I mention Bosher!!
I hope this is a very good game as well, and I would be lying if I didn’t say I am hoping for a blowout here. And not for something as silly as revenge, can’t do anything about past games played…but for just a moral boost and these guys need one right now.
I looked at the first 5 games of other teams and by far the Falcons have had one of the more brutal schedules out of the gate and with 3 of them on the road. Not trying to make excuses for us…just stating the facts as I see them.
Also just want to say thanks to you Packers fans for coming over and being respectful and not acting like…well…the typical Aint’s fan!! (Yes, we hate them!!)

If I had to bet I'd bet on the Packers.
The offense is so good this year, with so many weapons (Jennings, Finley, Driver, Nelson, Jones, Cobb) that even without a strong defense they will win more than they lose. GB has definitely been employing a bend, don’t break strategy on defense and the yards have been racking up, but they do seem to come through with the clutch turnover or stop when its needed.
That being said, the Falcons have a very strong offense of their own and I don’t see this being a gimme. Honestly, I’d probably avoid a bet either way in this one.

This is in your house, so this isn’t a gimme by any means. I admit, our Run D is overrated. Therefore, I expect some issues in stopping Michael Turner. Add to that our issues with the pass rush and secondary (Nick Collins is out for the year), and Matt Ryan will be able to employ a balanced offensive attack. I’m not worried about our offense, but I am getting concerned about our defense. Yes, they have made the stops and turnovers at critical times, but they won’t always be able to do that. The D isn’t nearly as good as it was last year. I’m sure a big reason was having Cullen Jenkins and Nick Collins though.
One game at a time...
Packers D
On D the Packers are dealing w/ alot of injuries. Collins out for the year is a big blow. Tramon has a bum shoulder, that will take a couple more weeks to be full strength. Woodson has foot and knee ailments slowing him and Matthews has the quad bothering him and sapping his burst. Besides that they are playing Burnett, who is making some plays but also giving up just as many and Peprah getting used to playing together. The offense has to carry us thru the bye week. After that we should be full strength and I expect a MUCH better defensive showing in the 2nd half of the season. Neal, Matthews and Tramon will all be 100% by then, and we should start playing the kind of D we expected. Like last year, but not quite as good…

I understand respecting the Packers, because they are the world champions and have played tremendously thus far in the season. But where is all the homerism? I expect to see us play a damned good game Sunday night, and I would love nothing more than to put that first “L” on the Packer’s record.

IMO
We expected a lot from him last year before he was injured (he was slated to be the starter due to Atari Bigby’s injury) and his performance in the two training camps combined with Peprah (the back up safety’s) performance in relief last year made the starter expendable. So we obviously thought that there was something there, I don’t know that I saw him making such an impact so soon.
"I'm here to talk about the economy today -- about the need to get four quarters of strong, consistent performance. That wasn't another Jay Cutler joke, I swear. It could be, but it's not."
He's had his problems, though, too
Big play INTs erase memories, but he got burned a couple of times against the Broncos. He’s not Nick Collins yet, but he has displayed a good deal of talent so far. I hope he continues to develop like he has so far, and even if Collins’ career is done (which potentially could happen), we’ll have him ready to fill in. Of course, if Collins does come back next year, we’re looking at two all-stars at S.

Atlanta will win a championship....someday
Packers offensive weakness.
Is our 4 minute offense. We are able to build a solid lead, but in the 4th qt when we want to run out the clock, we haven’t been able to get the 1st downs we need to run out the clock. Its what got the Saints back in the game, and Carolina too. We just haven’t been able to put the game away by running out the clock. Otherwise the run game has been good. Rodgers has been amazing and offense has been rolling.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
The Packers will probably start out by passing the ball a lot.
They’ll mix in the run to keep Atlanta’s D guessing, I think, but it remains to be seen if McCarthy will take his foot off the gas pedal or if he’ll go for the kill like he did last week against Denver.

The Packers will come out passing
Considering how hot Rodgers and the offense is, there’s little reason to switch to the running game. Until someone proves they can stop Rodgers, he will continue to pass. Of course more successful running plays would be a pleasant surprise in frustrating the DC’s around the league even more…

While the secondary needs to improve (the loss of Nick Collins was huge)
Overall, Packers fans are really excited. We honestly got a whole team’s worth of “free agents” back from IR this season (Finley, Grant, etc) and added Randall Cobb to the offense. It’s going to be really tough to stop this offense this year, the main concern is that the pass defense has been a bit weak.

We are grateful for the success the Packers have had so far and the situation they are in. It’s a young team, and they will continue to improve over the next few years. There is a concern with our defense, but we are confident in Dom Capers and our coaching staff to resolve the issues and get our D back to 2010 form. Our D may not be as dominant as they were last year, but they are still clutch. They stopped both the Saints and Panthers in the final seconds of their game winning drives. Both stops occurred near the endzone.

Win the division
The mood of the Packer fans tends to be that this could be a great year, but the first thing that needs to happen is to win the division. Last year the Packers failed in that, in fact an Aaron Rodgers led team hasn’t won the division yet, nor played a home playoff game. It’s time to get that done and with a quickly emerging Lions team that is not going to be a cake walk.
After winning the division, well I personally don’t see many teams in the NFC that can roll with the Packers. The Falcons have the talent, but they haven’t really put it together for a whole game yet (sorry guys just the way I see it). The Saints can, but we have also already beat them once. The Eagles have the talent, but they are imploding. The Giants and the Redskins are both a bit of mysteries due to QB issues and injury concerns. No one in the NFC West is worth mentioning. So it should be interesting once we come down the stretch of the season.

I see the 'Aints as our biggest competitors.
The only other teams I’m potentially worried about in the playoffs would be the Falcons and the Eagles if they can ever get it together.

Don't worry about criticizing our team
Because you’re right. We have the talent, but haven’t put it together. Whether that be the coordinators fault or something else. You guys are pretty much perched right on the top and since you beat the Saints (your biggest competitor) you’re looking good.

Definitely looking for another SB run.
Our offense is really clicking and I don’t see it slowing down, unless the unthinkable happens. On D we are dealing w/ alot of injuries. Collins is a big blow, Tramon playing w/ a bum shoulder, Woodson a bad foot and knee, Matthews a quad. No excuses, but if we get to the bye week in good shape we should get healthy and start to play pass D more like last year.
Burnett and Peprah have to learn to play together at Safety, both have given up big plays. Mike Neal should be back in the 2nd half of the season to help Raji and Matthews w/ the pass rush.
I feel kinda like we are biding our time till we get healthy on D, then in the 2nd half of the season both Offense and Defense can get it going like the playoffs last year. Another SB is definitely in our sights!
You've been Stroh'd™!!!

I have a question for Georgia residents...
This blog is named The Falcoholic, so I will ask an alcohol-related question. I lived in Athens, GA for 9 months, and aside from the greatness of the other 6 days of the week (WI prohibits alcohol sales after 9pm), on Sundays I couldn’t go to a store & buy a case/bottle/etc. of intoxicating liquid. If I recall correctly, this was a state law, not a local/regional/county law. So, what the heck do you guys do? Stock up on beer on Saturdays & hope it can get through an SEC triple header? The tailgates for UGA home games were pretty epic, so I could see drinking through all your alcohol on Saturday. Do you guys have some time-release safe, so as to insure that there will be alcohol for Sundays?

Grossman: Sup, you insulin needing bitch! The sex cannon has arrived! Now get the hell out of my locker room, you chinless mother fucker!
The key to it is planning,
When you make the run on Friday/Saturday buy LOTS. It helps if you add in a bottle of liquor to increase the effect (Jack Daniel’s if my weapon of choice). It also depends on the quality of the games. I tend to drink less during shootouts, and tons more in defensive battles and one-sided games. The time-release safe is only an option if you have friends that cant be trusted. If it gets to be a trend of running out on Saturday night, then when I get home from my initial run, I leave some of it out of the fridge so its warm/hot come gametime, then stock it in the fridge early Sunday when I wake up.
Ah, the warm-beer fail-safe
Wise move.

Soon to change
Quite a few of our dry-Sunday counties are voting on eliminating dry-Sunday this year. Quite a few have already done so.
Pretty soon, you’ll be able to get all liquored up – which, if the Falcons keep playing this way – will be quite necessary.

That's a very long and complicated answer
The best and simplest way I can explain it is that often times the Packers and their players feel like a part of the family. This is especially so since there are plenty of people who know where the guys buy their groceries and which bars they hang out at….it is an odd relationship between player and community.
Anyways, the best way I can explain it is that Farve is like an estranged uncle at this point. He’s part of the family, he may even have a special place in all the family stories, but it’s pretty uncomfortable when he shows up for Thanksgiving.
The other way I try to explain and understand the Favre / Packers conflict at this point is by retelling the story of Curly Lambeau. Lambeau himself left the Packers in disgrace. Typically his departure is listed as him causing the financial problems with some bad investments, but I have heard stories of an attempted hostile takeover of the Packers and moving the team to LA. Either way, he left the franchise to coach and manage the Chicago Cardinals and never returned to the team again. To this day the Packers have never formally retired Lambeau’s number (number 1) even though it has never been given out.
Favre’s situation is somewhat similar, a legend of the team having a messy divorce with the franchise and causing hurt feelings on both sides. Now each side is making little steps to try and heal the wounds and allow the story of Favre to primarily be told through Green Bay. It’s a wound the Packers and their fans know how to deal with, but it’s also one that will take time to mend.

Every now and then at APC,
We have people who come by and tell us we need to respect Favre’s legacy with the Packers and cherish what he brought to Green Bay. Every time, it’s like the person saying that takes a match to a fireworks convention … any petty arguments fall to the side and we all respond as one to let the people know how we still feel about #4.

No Disrespect to Favre
But the reason I ask is that it seems that Rodgers has all of the strengths that Favre had, without the many drawbacks, ie, Rodgers does much better about not turning the ball over.
Also, if I remember correctly – the only SB ring Favre got was really won by the defense. It seems like his numbers in that game were rather ho-hum, whereas Rodgers truly owned his SB game.
I know Favre will most likely have a seat at the “greatest QBs” conversation, but it seems like Rodgers has more upside than Favre ever did.
None taken....at least by me.
Rodgers and Favre always reminded me of Montana and Young, and not just because of the talented QB replacing a legend storyline. Young was a great QB, but he always seemed the most special as things broke down and making something happen. Montana on the other hand was just an artist the way he would lead and run that offense. The dude was a machine and really the template for the Tom Bradys, Peyton Mannings, and Drew Breeses of today’s NFL.
After watching Favre play for my Packers for over 15 years I can tell you that watching him play was magical and entertaining, but never something you were very sure about. You always felt like you were in the game, but then again your heart would stop as he threw the ball deep because you were never sure what would happen. Like Young he seemed to thrive when the play broke down and he would just will something to happen for miracle finishes.
On some level watching Rodgers doesn’t give you that same rush. When I watch that ball go sailing deep with Rodgers throwing the ball I don’t wonder what’s going to happen….I know he has his man and I know it’s going to be a big play most of the time (or at the very least he’s not throwing into double or triple coverage and it’s not going to get picked off). He’s smooth, efficient, and damn near dominate. There are times where I just sit back with my jaw down watching an all around beautiful performance. It’s different, but pretty darn fun.

One thing about Rodgers, when he drops back and prepares to throw it long, I don’t cringe the way I used to when Favre was behind center.

I was never a huge Favre fan.
He was never one of my 5 favorite players on the team. So, I think I don’t feel as wronged as some other fans might feel. I was a little surprised the way he forced himself to the Jets. He didn’t want to be in a competition for the starting job vs. Aaron Rodgers, which, I think at the time he would have won. I lost respect for him when he went to the Vikings, more or less to just stick it to the Packers. His comments last week may have been intended as a compliment, and due to him not being so bright just came out wrong, not really sure. If he meant it like it sounded, that was a total dick move. He needs to learn to keep his mouth shut, either way. Rodgers already has as many rings, more SB MVPs, and is working on getting those three MVPs (off to a good start so far).
I’m no Favre apologist, but one thing that really irks me is the Packer fans who are trying to revise the history of what he did for the team. Things like Favre being the “4th, 5th or 6th best QB in Packers history”, and acting like all he ever did was throw interceptions. Favre may have been the reason we only won one championship during his tenure, but you can’t discount the fact that he did win that one. Maybe with another QB we would have won 3 or 4 with those teams, but with another QB we might have won zero.

He's smarter than people give him credit for.
I personally think he knows exactly what he’s saying and how it’ll be perceived. He’s not the “aw-shucks” hick that he’s always portrayed as.
"I'm here to talk about the economy today -- about the need to get four quarters of strong, consistent performance. That wasn't another Jay Cutler joke, I swear. It could be, but it's not."
I thought Oates-y summed it up pretty well.
There are some who think Favre is so manipulative and media savvy that he knows exactly what he’s saying at all times. Sorry, I’m not buying that. I think he still fails to realize at times what’s coming out of his mouth and how his comments will read when they see print.
For evidence of that, look no further than his radio response. By acknowledging that the 2007 Packers were the most talented team he’d ever played on and that the talent pool got even better after that, Favre indirectly paid General Manager Ted Thompson a huge compliment. Does anyone think he would knowingly do that?

Can't find a link for it
But Jason Wilde of ESPN Milwaukee was saying that he believed that Favre knows exactly what he was saying. I agree with that. Favre was taking a shot at Rodgers, why else would you say that the 2007 team was the best you had ever played on and the 2011 team was even better. He may as well have said that he (Favre) would have won multiple Super Bowls in that stretch and that ARodg was the reason they didn’t win sooner.
"I'm here to talk about the economy today -- about the need to get four quarters of strong, consistent performance. That wasn't another Jay Cutler joke, I swear. It could be, but it's not."

I just find it hard to believe he could be stupid enough to intentionally say something like that. What’s the benefit? They don’t give rings for “would-have Super Bowls.”

Blitz or play back against AR?
We have had several discussions lately on how to defend your offense. ATL rarely blitzes, but you can expect a heavy dose of off zone and zone blitz. We like to utilize the soft hands and agility of our dline in coverage. Our DC truly believes that this will be the new trend in the NFL, reversing roles for players., ie he likes to send our cover lb’s in to blitz while the linemen drop out to cover.
I would love to see more man coverage with added pressure, but i dont think that we can pull it off against GB. We just dont match up well enough against all of your weapons. From your point of view, how would you slow down your Off?
Turnovers and ball control
The best way to contain the Packers offense is to keep them off the field primarily. That means ball control offense with lots of running. Really the two offensive stars for the Falcons need to be Turner and Gonzo. If these two guys aren’t the workhorses this week the Falcons will lose.
After that the defense needs to slow down the Packers and try to cause mistakes and turnovers. Limit the big plays and force the offense to move down the field slowly. If you are able to get a turnover (tough since they don’t do it often, but there have been three in the last two weeks from the offense) then you have to turn those turnovers into points.
Last year the Packers were never down by more than 7 points. This year that has only happened once in Carolina when the Panthers moved the ball down the field slowly and efficiently with lots of passes to TE’s. On the next kickoff the Panthers caused a fumble and where able to kick a FG. Suddenly the Packers were down two scores. If there’s a way to beat these Packers it’s going to be through ball control and turnovers. Heck that’s how the Bears were able to hang with the Pack so many times last year as well.

In other words, play a perfect game
The fact that what you described is what it takes to beat the Pack is proof positive that they are one of the best teams in the league.
I don't know about perfect, but it is an uphill climb to face them
The problem facing the Packers offense is that right now there is no one way to stop it. There just isn’t. The Packers can spread a defense wide with five WR’s, and then the next play go heavy a two or three TE set (there are 5 TE’s on the roster) or run an inverted wishbone formation and go with a power running attack. People seem to forget that the Packers score most of their really big TD passes on play action fakes. The reason why they can do that is because they will line up in these obvious power run formations, the same formations where they have run it down the team’s throat for a bunch of plays in that game and then play action pass hitting Jennings or Nelson deep. Throw in a determined playmaker like Jennings, and match up nightmare like Finley (think Gonzo in his prime), and a QB that can manage that all and it’s not a matter of stopping it’s a question of containing.
There are problems though. The Packers can be slowed down. The best hope is getting pressure with four, if that can be accomplished then you can rattle Rodgers a bit but still have a good amount of coverage. Try to make the Packers one dimensional but stopping the running game as much as possible. Get them in third and longs.
The other good news is that the O-line isn’t at full strength right now. Bulaga looks to be out again which is a big problem. Newhouse was pretty good off the bench, and a bit up and down starting. Granted he was going up against Von Miller who is looking like a beast, but he was shaky. Clifton also has had his problem moments so far in the early part of the year. There is also a dramatic lack of depth along the interior of the line.
So yeah, the Packers are very good and have lots of talent at offense, but there are ways to slow them down and stop them. Best plan is attacking Newhouse as best as possible and hope to get after Rodgers with four or five.
As for the D, they aren’t quite as shut down as they were last year. They need a complementary pass rusher and a cover ILB really. There are holes and ways to move the ball up on them. They are pretty good at clamping down in the end zone and forcing turn over though. Really when you have an offense like the Packers do right now that’s pretty much all you need in order to win on a consistent basis.

I must say, I want to win even more badly now after reading about how Rodgers got all offended because Roddy White said we were the better team after the loss last season. That’s pretty standard stuff for athletes to say there, I’m shocked Rodgers is latching onto that. I wouldn’t mind a win with a couple of hard sacks on Rodgers, just to bring the guys ego back to Earth. Sorry to come on here with this aggressive talk, but that guy has really started to annoy me.

13.
Grossman: Sup, you insulin needing bitch! The sex cannon has arrived! Now get the hell out of my locker room, you chinless mother fucker!
No - I wouldn't.
I think every team has the right to think that they’re the better team. The outcome of the game often tells who had the better game, but not who the better team is. I mean, can you really say that when one team beats another one that they’re the better team, hands down? When NY beat NE in the Superbowl, was NY undoubtedly the better team? I’d argue that NE was a better team that just had an off day (they were undefeated until the SB). By your logic, if any team comes in to Green Bay and beats the Packers, they are the better team – even if they have a losing record. By your logic, we were the better team when we beat you guys in the regular season (and yes, I know it wasn’t as convincing as your win in the playoffs).
My point isn’t that the Falcons are better, or that the Packers are better (which I believe the Packers are better, based on how consistently well they’ve played over a sustained period of time). Roddy White thought that his team didn’t play to their potential, and that they COULD have won that game if they were at their best (which they were far from, and which the Packers at). What’s the big deal? Roddy has given the Pack props (when we picked up Julio Jones, he talked about being more like the Packers “with all those weapons”) and for Rodgers to harp on such an innocent comment seems trite.
He’s a stellar QB and deserves respect, but not when he whines about perceived slights that really weren’t there, he loses it from me. Just be good and humble. I know he’s your boy so you’ll want to defend him, and that’s fine. You could care less if he’s humble as long as he’s winning. To me, though, sportsmanship is what makes sports so amazing. Not winning and losing and stupid in-your-face celebrations.
"It's called Thanksgiving for a reason. If I can give and people thank me for it, that's kind of the thing that makes me feel great inside." - Dunta
You missed an important part of what I said
By your logic, if any team comes in to Green Bay and beats the Packers, they are the better team – even if they have a losing record.
if any team comes in to Green Bay and beats the Packers by 27, I will readily admit that team is superior to the Packers. You come to GB this postseason & thoroughly dismantle the Packers the way the Packers dismantled you last postseason, and you will get respect from both the Packers & the fans. No one will say “yeah, but we are still the better team.” There’s a difference between confidence & arrogance (& ignorance, for that matter).
By your logic, we were the better team when we beat you guys in the regular season (and yes, I know it wasn’t as convincing as your win in the playoffs)
Not by my logic at all; it misses it on both counts. #1: not at home. #2: not by 27. Everything went right for the Falcons that day, Rodgers’ goal-line fumble, Gonzalez “catching” that 4th down pass, McCarthy not throwing the challenge flag, the return + facemask at the end of the game, and you managed to win by 3 at home.
stupid in-your-face celebrations.

How many TDs were you down by when he busted this out?
…and, for the record, no, I don’t think the Patriots were a better team than the Giants that year (and again, it was a neutral site/not a 27 point win). I think they finally got exposed for the frauds they really are. Tom Brady is only as good as his offensive line. Some QBs can overcome not having 6 seconds to decide where to throw the ball. Tom Brady can not. He’s this generation’s Emmitt Smith: great offensive line makes average player appear great.

Sportsmanship?
Your questioning Rodgers sportsmanship after the way he handled the Favre drama in ‘08 or even this week? Seriously the man is humility defined. He deflects praise on him to his teammates. What he does do is use ANY precieved slight as motivation to prove people wrong. I don’t think he reallly reacted to Whites comments strongly at all. What he will do is use it and Favres indiotic comments this week as more motivation to show the world how good he is. In your face celebrations? You mean like the one Abraham used in Rodgers face w/ the “belt”?! What did Rodgers do after that in your face by Abraham? He used it as fuel, and drove his team down the field on the very same drive and put the ball in the End Zone himself! The busted out the “Belt” w/ authority!
Whites comments will give Rodgers a little lift this week, but not NEARLY as much as Favre did. You should be pissed at Favre, he just gave Rodgers all the motivation he needs to win another SB this year and show #4 who the better QB really is! What WHite said is a blip on the radar for Rodgers in comparison!

A serious answer
It’s tough to say who on the offensive staff would be the guy to hire since it’s the defensive guys that tend to get most of the credit and attention. Part of thing with having an offensive Head Coach all the credit goes to him, while all the individual defensive guys get extra amounts of love.
One guy I would highlight though is Tom Clement. He’s the QB coach for the Packers and has been for awhile. Now it’s fairly well known that McCarthy is a QB whisperer so Clement’s role in the development of Rodgers and Flynn is questionable, but it’s worth note that the Bears tried to interview him for their OC job a couple years ago before they hired Martz and the Packers prevented that from happening. To me that says what he means to the Packers and what sort of coach he is.
Another interesting one to keep your eye on would be Ben McAdoo. McAdoo is the guy who has taken a raw talent in Jermichael Finley and turning him into one of the most explosive offensive weapons in the league. He’s also a coach that TT & MM have been loading with talent. The Packers have 5 tight ends on the roster right now and have drafted a highly athletic receiving TE in the last two drafts (Andrew Quarless in the fifth round last year and DJ Williams in the fifth round this year). I know TT loves to draft at positions of strength when there is a player or coach to build around to make a particular position group dominate. That much drafting in that area points to trust in McAdoo and could mean that he’s got some potential to some good things with an offense of his own.
The last thing I would advise is that these guys would probably bring a change of philosophy on offense. From watching Musgrave over at MN and the offense that they are running I can tell that there is a bit of a different philosophy from what was bringing from ATL and what MN did (which is fairly similar to the Packers offense). The Packers are a WCO team with a zone blocking scheme and a spread out and attack philosophy. It would probably be a new offense and terminology for the offense to learn.

Edgar Bennett could be a possibility at some point too.
He was the running backs coach for a few years before moving to the WR coaching position this year. Under his coaching, drops are way down this year.

Clements hands down on Offense!
The man, along w/ McCarthy have helped make Rodgers the force he is. Clements is going to make some team VERY happy when the hire him as an OC! He has HC written all over him… Only a matter of time and when he gets his shot he will be very successful!
You've been Stroh'd™!!!

I’d like to apologize for the nastiness that went on the “Ask the Falcoholic Thread” on APC.
On another note: Could you please tell Dunta Robinson that killing the opposing WR is impermissible? Thanks.

You have no reason to apologize
but the person who really should…never will.

Grossman: Sup, you insulin needing bitch! The sex cannon has arrived! Now get the hell out of my locker room, you chinless mother fucker!
Good game, Packers.
Congrats on the win. Wish we could have pulled that out, it was a tough loss. Glad it was competitive!
