Quick Discussion: Trending Falcons
Just a quick discussion post for you all today, because by the time you read this, I'll be in the first hour of my 4.5 hour drive back to school, and there's plenty of work to be done once I get there. It never ends. I tell ya what, I don't envy people with kids/real jobs/wives at all. You guys must have zero time to do anything.
In any case, my question to you all today is simple: Do you think that, with the positive showing against the Panthers, the Falcons will finally get over the hump? Or will you reserve your judgment until after the Detroit game?
Personally, I feel like we still have a ways to go before I really jump back on the happy train, but I was pleased with what I saw once the Falcons stopped playing Panther football on Sunday. Beating Detroit, even by a small margin, would do well to restore my faith in that we're legitimately a good football team. I think we proved we're not in the "bad" echelon, per se, but man, for a little while there, I was worried.
What do you all think? Are we trending upward? Should we not place too much in the stock of beating the Panthers?
Oh, and someone tell MM that Chris Houston doesn't turn his head around and to go deep on him 10 times on Sunday. That'll teach him.

Getting better
The Falcons are not a good team yet, but are getting better every game. So that has to count for something, right?
All I know is that Grimey has a foot where there shouldn't be one in that pic.
Btw, I’m reserving judgment. Let’s beat a team w/a winning record first.
I don't think a win against
a 1-4 teams means anything other than ATL can beat a team they should have beaten. And they should have beaten them by 14 points. I won’t make a call until I see the DET, IND and first NO game.
I worry...
every game we go into now…when is the “Malarkey Meltdown” gonna happen in this game!!

If we had lost, then I would feel twicefold the misery over the ease of the win.
Next week will be the big test. We need to beat an opponent with a winning record before I am happy with where we are. Though a loss, will not be the end of the world, I dont think that we can make the playoffs going in to mid-season 4-4. I see next week as a must win game against a very hot team.
Right now, average at best
Let’s see – who have we beat:
Philly – Currently 2-4
Seattle – Currently 2-3
Carolina – Currently 1-5
We are – at best – an average team. We’re beating the teams we’re supposed to and losing to the better teams. We definitely have the talent to be a top-tier team, but we are most certainly not one at this moment.
Should we beat Detroit on their home turf, I think that will go a long way towards moving us back up to the discussion of “better” teams.
Looking at that
ATL is the 2011 version of Tampa Bay (from last year). Until ATL beats a team with a winning record they have ZERO quality wins.
Agreed.
A win against Detroit will certainly help, but this is not a team that should be getting by on “moral” victories anymore.

Shame the NFL doesn't go by the BCS. Record is all that matters.

Yeah
until playoff time and no quality wins get’s your ass kicked in the first round. Yeah, record is ALL that matters.
Seahawks blew that theory out of the water big time last year.
You just have to get hot and plan well. Getting in is all that matters.

I totally agree
Its like raisin kids; if you get em past twenty and they are alive you win.All we have to do is figure out how many games it will take and wish real hard.In a perfect world.Who knows but I think we are fine .I still like the fact we held GB scoreless for two quarters. Our defense had them reeling .At least
for a while till the jerks actually adjusted.Yes Coaches it can be done on the fly.Go falcons.

Wow, that Takes me Back
I remember collecting those things from Hardies (?) as a kid. Then my mom sold them at a garage sale for 20 cents along with my nina turtles…sigh.

They did not
holy crap. They won ONE game in the playoffs. NOR does one occurance blow a theory. What blows is how people defend crap wins and then act surprised when we loose to good teams.
2010 Packers
Lost to the Lions, Dolphins and Redskins last year, so relax.
Oh and they lost to the Falcons, who apparently didn’t beat anyone.

Hear ya
But I think you have to look beyond straight wins and losses. It’s about playing a complete game, which they’ve only accomplished 2.5 times this year (once in the Seattle game and 3/4 of a game versus Philly and Carolina).
Once they figure out how to do that, a run is entirely possible. Certainly appreciate your skepticism. I’d spent fewer nights crying myself to sleep if I were more realistic about the Falcons.
James...
how can you possibly say the game in Seattle was a complete game?! The second half was an absolute disaster…on both side of the ball!! To turn a 24-7 halftime lead into a 30-28 squeaker that we only won because TJ could not get the Hawks any closer…7 more yards and that game is a loss, that field goal was missed by 6 yards. I had a personal view of it as that was the end zone I was sitting at!!
I agree with the Philly and Carolina Games. So I have us at 2.0 and without one single complete game on any given Sunday so far.

I love them but I do not trust them right now.
Except for a few:
Tony
Spoon
Lofton
Peters
Turner
HELL what am I saying? I do trust them.

I believe
You are correct sir. That is why its the only jersey I now wear on gameday!
I still believe in Matty Ice!!
Offensive progressions don’t happen overnight and I believe JJ11 being out for a game was the best possible thing to get us back on track.
When we balance we dominate. (Offensively anyway)
Shake up the runs.
I’d like to see Quizz on 2nd and long running some stretches. Maybe crosses fingers a few “successful” screens.
Burner hit the Tackles, not the guard every run. It worked rather well in this game and should work against most teams. When you run him off a different gap every rush we should see even better numbers. Even though he has lost a step he is still a battering ram to be reckoned with! If ya can’t run past them (Snells I’m lookin at you) run through them. Burner Burner Burner.
Let Julio stay in the shadows perfecting his PRO technique on short routes, so he can develop his separations. Once he can fake corners outta their cleats,(and yes I believe he has the speed and talent to do so), send him on streaks and deep posts. Let Roddy settle in and run the option routes while Matty dumps to the seam freak Gonzo, once the db’s start honoring the seams. (and Matty’s line gives him just a touch more confidence) JJ11 & RW84 will have huge games and let’s not forget that Ryan was the highest rated qb on sunday. His vision is coming back (0 picks) and some absolutely beautiful deep balls.
My conclusion is that while carolina isn’t a quality win its the one we needed, with JJ out maybe, just maybe crosses fingers once again some one will re-insert the formula that worked so well last year. And we can get back to Falcons Football!

I love those jersey's.
I wish they wore them more often.
I don't know
About any of you folks, but I think we have started to this around. You have to beat those bottom feeders, or you suck like them. If you would of asked me a few weeks ago if the Falcons could go into Detroit and beat the Lions, I would of thought you were friggin’ nuts, but, from what I have seen lately, winning in Detroit is entirely possible. The Lions D is awful against the run, and their secondary is not all that great, though their pass rush is snarly. OL is better than recent years, but they are a young team still learning how to win. I’m not saying that we are going to smoke these guys, but, we definetly have a shot to win this. We are hopefully going back to what make the Falcons tick, run first, then pass. Look at what happened last week, need to take advantage of this and the Colts, who are awful as well against the run the next two games. I believe the Falcons had no penalties in the second half Sunday? I could be wrong. It’s starting to look better..
Evil Falcon
Exactly evil
Attack a known weakness and don’t forget to keep doing it! This team has a tendency to go from “this is working great! Keep doing it!” to “oh look something shiny! What were we doing?”. Attack them w/the run and the occasional deep ball to keep them off balance. While I’d love the yards to Roddy, fantasy football u know, I’ll take those PI’s and 1 yard TD runs for the sake of my football sanity. For some reason, this team can’t play balanced football consistently.

ATL is for real if they beat New Orleans
I know DET ha been playing good football, but they had to rely on a bunch of pick 6’s to win the Dallas game and they came from a big deficit to beat an awful MIN team. If we beat them, it will be a good win, but I still won’t be completely sold. If we beat Nawlins, then I’ll feel much better about the team.
I'll never say we're trending down after a win, but...
I don’t think you can possibly say we’re trending upward. You have to see some degree of consistency from this team for multiple games before you can truly say they’re trending upward.
For me the Panthers game was positive in that we won when we had to, but I still have concerns, namely that it seems like every game something different breaks down. This past week it was the defense’s inability to get off the field. Next week it could be the passing game. The week after that it could be the running game. Or the offensive line. Or the secondary. Or the tackling.
And that’s what drives you crazy – you never know what’s going to stop working.
The frustration with this team is not that they can’t play well… it’s that they can’t all play well for the same 4 quarters. And this isn’t a recent problem… you saw it constantly last year, but it got covered up by some great last minute wins. The playoff game and the first 6 games of this season aren’t indicative of some new problem that suddenly crept up… it’s the uncovering of a problem that’s been there for a long time.

No, I do not...
believe this team will succeed with current OC and DC unless they have an epiphany and suddenly start playing like they ARE in 2011 instead of 1971!!

Fire MM and Smitty takes over the D
The new trend now is grabbing a opposing coordinator and letting the HC run whatever they didi before. As in GB with McCarthy and Payton in NO. If Smitty takes over the D and TD brings in an offensive guru or upcoming offensive mind it would work better. I don’t think this team can win a super bowl with this staff.
Trending up...reserving judgement until after Detroit game
I’d say Detroit is our first real test after a couple of weeks of looking like we can actually play football again.
Ummmm...not sure about the trending up
when last week’s performace puts our 3rd down defense from 28 to 32. I think we have the talent on the field but now we HAVE to do something about our 3rd down defense. I was hoping that our team would be at least in the middle of the pack.
Beat Detroit on the road
Then go into the Bye week where you come out against the Indianapolis Dolts…
Yes, a win Sunday turns this season around for reals.
Reserve Judgement till Sunday
If we beat the Lions I will be back on the happy train!
Falcons are solid...
…but it seems they are still trying to find themselves. The TB loss was a huge moral letdown, but the D held a division rival to 1 TD. They did this while amassing a whopping 30 yards on the ground – 12 yards courtesy of that scrambling marvel, Matt Ryan. MR2 has 60 yards rushing in 6 games – that is 11 more than he had TOTAL in 2009, and almost half of what he had TOTAL last year. Our O-Line has been held together with chewing gum this year. Despite this, our D has held GB, TB, and Chicago to FG’s instead of TD’s (Chicago was a turnover debacle, I don’t blame the D).
If the Falcons can regain a consistent rushing attack behind this O-Line, the wins will return.
