Falcons CB Full Season Stats for 2010: DR and Grimey

Before we jump in to individual numbers let's look at the Passing numbers compared to last year. There is a significant improvement in the numbers and the biggest improvement compared to last year is in Big Plays (20 + yards) given up.  The actual number of Pass Attempts this year has increased compared to last year, the teams are throwing but the pass coverage improved leaps and bounds.

It's very hard to compare Performance of Dunta Robinson with Brent Grimes unless you take defensive schemes in to account. Dunta Robinson is in single Coverage most of the time. If he misses a tackle or jumps a route it will result in touchdown (remember the Touch Down to Mike Williams in the Tampa game). His role is to hold the right side and limit the big plays. Grimes on the other end has help from DeCoud . Grimes can play aggressive and attack the ball, if he misses it's still ok because he got help.

Take a look at the numbers of Both Dunta and Brent Grimes and make your own Conclusion. But remember both are good in what they are supposed to do and  we are lucky to have a great debate.

Key Observations:

1.       Grimes is the MVP among our DB's, but you can say DR's presence enables him to play aggressive ball.

2.       Brent Grimes is by far the most targeted CB. (46 % more than DR).  He is thrown at 119 times which is 21% of the total Pass attempts against falcons and gave up 676 Yards ( 18.4% of the total passing Yards).

3.       Grimes 23 PD is a falcon's record.

4.       DR is targeted 81 times this year (14 % of the total Pass attempts against falcons). For a guy who is usually in single Coverage that's a good indicator that teams don't take too many chances on him.

5.       Brent Grimes is tied with William Moore with his 5 interceptions. Remember he had 6 interceptions last year.

6.       Dunta had just 1 PI call against him compared to 6 PI calls against the RCB Chris Houston last year.

7.       Dunta's last touchdown was in Carolina game in Garbage time.  Grimes  gave up 4 Touchdowns and DR gave up 3 TD if you count the relevant time.

Very nicely done. They are really very close actually. Can I ask, how did you derive those target numbers? Not questioning their legitimacy, just wondering really.

And might I add, you sir are a man of your word. Again: Great work!

Couple of sources.

Game book gives you time of passing play and result of the play. I use NFL rewind to go directly to a play using the time of play and get coverage details. I paid 19.99 for whole 2010 season as part of special offer from NFL.

Gotcha ...

Well feel free to share this kind of info as much as you’d like going forward. I just like that folks (on this site) are starting to rely on something besides their naked eyes.

Awesome

I agree with your analysis of the stats.

Who did we give up an 83 yard rec. to? Did I wipe that from my memory?

DeCoud in the eagles game!

Jermy Maclin was the receiver.

Indeed.

That was one hell of a mind-wipe I pulled.

Improved coverage also helps DL.DB's and Defensive Linemen help each other out.

The conclusion for Abe having only 5.5 Sacks last year was that DB’s were not holding up. That’s why Falcons went and Signed a CB not a DE. Improved Pass Defense helps our DL, Improved DL play helps our DB’s.

Good call

I like this post a lot. I think they are both playing great.

Great post

It really sheds some light on how different the pass coverage is set up for DR and BG. I have liked DR all year and it says a lot that about his play when you consider he typically doesn’t have safety support.

by mwalex on Jan 13, 2011 11:31 PM EST reply actions

he typically doesn’t have safety support

Wonder if we can chart that? I mean, you’d think all the CBs have some safety support, sooner or later. Obviously Grimsey has more though.

by James Rael on Jan 13, 2011 11:36 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think he would play so far off the receiver if he had help.

He could afford to get beaten deep if the safeties were playing deep halves, and he’d also be eyeing flat routes a bit more, too, more than likely.

I wanna say he comes up in zone coverage and covers the flat with 10 yard responsibility first, but I’d have to do a little tape studying for that. (And I don’t have any of that :’( )

That is a great suggestion

It seems like a safety does tend to help BG and I wonder if the other safety is giving run or deep support?

by mwalex on Jan 14, 2011 9:25 AM EST up reply actions

hard hard hard to chart Safeties

They’re not even on the TV screen on probably half the plays.

I will say, though, that I thought most of the time when Dunta was playing 8-10 yards off, Grimes was playing off too… meaning they were in some sort of Cover-3 (Dunta, DeCoud, Grimes each with a deep third, with Moore up close to the LOS). When they’re in a Tampa-2 style coverage, both CB’s would be in the flats with both Safeties in the Deep zones. And when BVG sends 7 (not that often), they’d all have to be in man-to-man, with no Safety help.

My long way of saying I just don’t know that I agree that Grimes has more Safety help (at least not “obviously” more).

Great Post!!

I love the detailed numbers. So helpful when you’re trying to draw conclusions about something My conclusions from these numbers -

1. Dunta has been an improvement on Houston but he needs to be better if he wants to earn his salary
2. Grimes is better than Dunta at this point – may change if Dunta gets more accustomed to the scheme
3. Nickel, Dime and LB coverage is quite good except for passes defended

Unfortunately my thoughts were too long so i put up a more detailed fanpost:

I won't say that BG is better DR23

His play has been better BUT if he does get safety help then he can afford to play more aggressively. That is a big but because it’s conjecture at this point. Regardless BG is a great athlete and ATL is lucky to have him. DR is also a great athlete and has done everything BVG has asked of him.

by mwalex on Jan 14, 2011 9:33 AM EST up reply actions

I meant BG has had a better season

Clearly DR can and probably will be better next season considering this was his first year in the scheme and he was asked to shoulder quite a load….assuming vishnu is right and he had little safety help

Great job Vishnu... Rec'd

What a great season by Grimes.

Yards per Attempt Allowed, for comparison (I like this because it incorporates both Completion % and YPC into 1 number):
Dunta 6.64
Grimes 5.68

And yes, Grimes is the most Targeted, but don’t forget Dunta missed a game and a half, so it’s not quite as big a gap as “46% more” indicates.

Also, for being our “sure tackler”, Dunta is giving up more YAC per Catch (that might be skewed by the one 58 yarder, though).

Again, great great work Vishnu!

You could always compare the % of passes thrown at them per snaps played.

Dunta played 849 snaps and was targeted 81 times. Grimes was on the field for 987 snaps and they threw it his way 119 times. So when Dunta is on the field, he is targeted an average of 9.54% of those snaps. When Grimes is on the field, he is targeted an average of 12.1% of those snaps. So from a preliminary view, they are definitely throwing the ball more times per game to Grimes than they are to Dunta, without having to consider that Dunta was a little banged up and missed some playing time.

Good point: rec'd

Take 100 play sample though. That means Grimes gets targeted 2.47 more times. Not a huge disparity in my opinion.

The 23 pass deflections is a staggering number

It really speaks to how often Grimes is in on the play, and his mastery of his arms even while he’s twisting and turning in a million different directions. Lock this man up ASAP.

Wonderful analysis, great post, rec'd

I love how well Dimitroff/Schmitty get players that fit the scheme so well!

Dunta is great in single coverage. So we have him hold his own, limit those big plays, and keep his guy in front so C4 Moore can either roam in the box and play the run or roam free and try to make a play on the ball (=5 INT’s).

Grimes is an athletic freak with a sick vertical and is a ballhawk. So we allow him to do what he’s best at and have DeCoud back him up. I LOVE IT!!

Cheers! To BVG, Smitty, and Dimitroff!
