Ask a Steelers Fan
Sunday is 6 days away. It just feels good to have football back, its like getting a second chance at life. Well maybe that is a little hyperbole but you get the idea. Dave Choate already started the thread over at BTSC, so I thought I'd start one over here.
Us steelers fans have a wide array of expectations for the 2010 season. Some side with Tomlin, our head coach, and stand on the expectations don't change motto. Others expect us to have a down year, say 6-10 (we usually tar and feather those fans) . Theres are those expect us to be a middle of the road team. We will defeniately like for the defense to return to the 2008 form and the running game to pick up. Which I personally think will happen. Want to know why? Want to know the difference Maurkice Pouncey makes with our line? (We already want his brother at guard.) Want to know why Issac Redman will score 100 touchdowns in the first quarters? And exactly why our defense will be as good as the 2008 defense. What ever questions you have ask them here, if you dare.

Oh, and why are you guys crushing on Isaac Redman so hard?

Well
You have to imagine, this is a city that had Jerome Bettis. Not only that, we loved Jerome. The steelers are known for smash mouth football. The fans prefer smash mouth football. Since Jerome left, the smash in our football left also. Since then we have struggled in short yardage situations and milking the clock when we have a lead. So there has been a search for who can take up that role on our offense. Now enter Issac Redman. Last year as a rookie, he was the only back to score a touchdown on our goal line drills in training camp against the first team defense. And he not only did it once he did several times. Having a great camp culminating into the absolute destruction of the panthers in Week 4 of the preseason, Redman was subsequently cut from the team and placed on the practice squad. The coach sited conditioning reasons and putting a return specialist on the team.
Now this year has been more of the same from redman except he is in much better football shape. He has now made the team, so we are all excited about what he will do in the regular season. If he is the cure to our short yardage problems I believe they will build a statue of redman in pittsburgh.

Actually tann
I would like to point out that many of our members in fact do not think Redman is anything more than an average short yardage back. However last camp we had a lot of people going crazy over us cutting the kid so this season when he came back we made him into this deity like figure for all of BTSC to rally behind.
Just a bit of light hearted fun at the expense of certain individuals.

Too soon to tell
I was one of those people that mocked the BTSC members who went over the top with Redman love last year. However, the kid has made strides since last year. He runs down hill better than any back we have on the roster and refuses to give up. His blitz pick up and pass blocking has been sensational. I do not think he is the next Bettis or anything like that, but he has been a nice camp story.

Not denying it
but he has no shot with our team to be anything more than a average power back. We already have an emerging superstar at RB who is still very young in Mendy. I like Redman but still think he is never going to amount to much.

Im definitely not on the Redman bandwagon
I see no evidence to suggest he will much more than a career backup. He has no top end speed nor does he have that “x-factor” that most starters in the league have. I dont get the same feeling watching Redman bust one up the middle as I do Mendenhall.
He could produce sure, but if he gets 100 carries this year ill dance naked on a car

Culpepper was a class guy for the most part, and I always liked the way he played for the Vikings, but you have to admit after he tore his knee to pieces, he was never the same. Both QBs were as injury prone as each other, but I think with Lefty, he was a bit safer on the injury front

But before that, Old Cully could beat you with his feet as well
Not that he did, for the most part, but it was known to happen. His destroyed knee just made it so he had to put more emphasis on his passing. His short range throws we superb, and his bombs were always right on the money. It was his intermediate tosses that were lacking, IIRC.
That’s why he was never able to make much of anything happen in Miami, they lived and died on the intermediate game; screens, short slants, etc.. I don’t remember Miami having a real deep threat at that time. Dante was used to throwing up bombs to Moss and Carter.
He couldn’t adjust to the new game they wanted him to play there or Oakland or Detroit, IMHO.

Where do you think you’ll finish this year and how the Division will pan out.
How do you feel about each of the three divisional opponents
Which NFC South team scares you the most and the least
IE: Do you think the Tampa is a trap game?
How does a true Pittsburgh accent sound like (without the yelling – normal tone voice)?
I did a rideshare on craigslist for a woman that was from pittsburgh (diehard steeler fan) and she had a decent accent, and I wanted to verify it.
Feeding the Monster since 1984
I can take all apart from the last one
I think we finish top in our division, with a 12-4 record. Reasoning is:
The Ravens are a good squad but their D the first 6 weeks will be very hurt by the loss of Ed Reed and corners who finished last season as starters in their top 3, that secondary will take some time. Flacco is also not a good QB yet, he is reliant on Ray Rice as his number one passing option which hurts this team greatly. They could easily however take the top spot in the division ahead of us.
The Bengals are a team that is never consistent and never will be with the circus that they run there. Ochostinko and TO are going to clash eventually and Palmer is not the same as he was pre Kimo. I don’t believe that Ced Benson will post the same success as 2009 either. The D however will remain steady.
The Browns are… well the Browns.
In terms of the NFCS, I can’t look past the Saints, returning SB champs and the best O in the league? That defense is pretty good aswell. I think we can handle the Panthers and the Bucs with ease, just on a sheer talent level. I think our 2 teams will be a great match but in the end our superior D and homefield advantage will prevail in a tight game.

the 12-4 part mostly
I just don’t foresee you going better than 2-2 in your first 4 to start off with. No Big Ben, Baltimore beats you at home in week 4. I’m also giving Atlanta the week one win. There is a good chance you all lose in Tennessee next week also with what looks to be only one sure win without Ben to kick off the season against Tampa.
My opinions are also based on speculation but they are what they are. The coaching staff is obviously not 100% confident in their decision to have Dixon at QB or they would not have been considering Batch in the first place.
I also believe that your offense took a huge step back with the loss of Holmes… he was a playmaker and now your options at receiver are a little more limited and you don’t have a very elite running back. Your defense can only do so much and your defense is very dependent on Polomalu being healthy.
We’ll just have to wait and see what happens. Not being an AFC North fan in the least bit, I really do not care too entirely much what happens and wish your team the absolute best of luck when they are not facing the Falcons :)
know what you believe in and why you believe in it
Well we differ on some key points
Firstly on the Baltimore thing, last season when our D was ripped apart by injuries and a couple of FA losses, we were without Ben and Batch (backup of 09) for a game against Baltimore in Baltimore, Dixon went in and performed admirably on almost no snaps and we lost out in OT. So with DD taking snaps as our starter and our D hopefully back to it’s best then we can still beat Baltimore (I don’t think we do however)
Secondly, I see you as a weaker team than Baltimore are and therefore I think we just about pull off the win against you guys. I then expect BB to be able to lead us to a 9-3 record when he gets back.
The offense will not take a step back IMO just because we lost Holmes. We have an emerging replacement for Holmes in Wallace who has looked awesome this preseason and should make a few DB’s look silly this season, his route running is getting to a Holmes’esque state and he is far quicker than Holmes. We also have Heath Miller who is still underutilised in our offense. Hines Ward is still a huge threat and will likely total 1000 yards again barring injury. We also have 2 very promising rookies in Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown. These 2 have both impressed at camp and look set to contribute aswell. Our Offense will also become more balanced as Reshard Mendenhall announces himself as an elite back in the league, after averaging over 100 yards per start last season.
Anyone in their right mind would consider Charlie Batch as their backup plan at QB, he has been around the Burgh for years, knows the playbook better than and player or coach on the team and knows exactly how to win a couple of games for us. Dixon is a better talent and the staff obviously believe he is able to lead this team at a higher level.

One point that is incorrect
is how good the Saints D is. It was not good last year and did not improve in the offseason. Their D only looked good because their offense scored a lot of points quickly. Look at the stats last year and see if the Saints D was good.
Also, how can you say “your superior D”? Last year is gone and there are no stats for 2010 yet. Home field advantage is going to help you gusy for sure.
Anyone who would argue that you have a better D than us is in trouble
Our D had a horrible year last year right? We were still the 5th best D in terms of total yards allowed whereas your D was ranked 21st, now couple that with the fact that we get the best defensive player in the league back and our best D lineman, aswell as a healthy Timmons and an upgrade at #2 CB .
I somehow think our D is FAR superior to anything the Falcons can muster.

Once again
Last year is last year my friend. I did not say ATL had a better defense and based on 2009 numbers you are right. At the end of the day we’ll see on Sunday how the defenses compare for 2010.
Well you implied that
how can you say “your superior D”
That is saying to me that my statement of us having a superior D is wrong, therefore you say your D is better.
I know last year is last year, hence why I stated how our defense has improved in talent for this year, so our ranking should improve. Stats don’t lie, our D is far better than yours. That is fact.

As no games have been played in 2010
there are no stats to support how the defenses compare so far. Our defense has improved appreciably from a personel standpoint and should be much better this year. There are mnay intangibles that also come into play such as injuries. You guys lost one player on defense last year, TroyP, and had a hard time stopping anyone. That is why I said lets wait and see.
Actually we lost two players
two players who both happen to be the best in the league at their respective positions. Add that to a sub par #2 CB and an injured beast ILB and you get a substantially hindered defense.

What a second
so you’re saying no games have been played but at the same time state that the personel has been improved. Our argument counters itself because you can’t say that the defense has improved until the games have been played using your former logic. You have to be consistent.
Well we’re essentially saying the same thing. We’re saying we had the 5th best defense in terms of yards last year, and our personally has greatly improved. We got our best d-lineman back from injury and we got our best DB back from injury, who happens to be an all-pro player. Also our 1 round pick ILB timmons was working on two bad ankles for most of the season is now fully healthy and has been flying all over the field this year. He is the Troy P for the linebackers. And we have improved in personel at cornerback. Also we got a lot deeper on defense so guys should stay fresh in the 4th quarter. So our defense should be much better this year. You can’t use the exclusionary argument and just think that only your defense gets better when personel is added. If it applies for the Falcons it applies for the Steelers.

My logic has been consistent
Last year your defense was much better than ATL’s, hands down. My comments have nothing to do with the quality of the Steelers defense because I could care less if they are better or worse. My comment was specifically about the upcoming 2010 season. We have added some players, got some back from injury and other have grown into their positions. What I was inferring is that there is a very good possibility that the gap between the defenses will be much less than last year. Once again I was not commenting on the Steelers defense as I don’t follow them and don’t really care what they do.
Mine's bigger.
That’s why we play the game. I’m confident ATL has a good defense this year and I’m sure we are gonna chew up that Mickey mouse QB. I do think Steelers D is quite nasty and I’m glad we have the run game we do. It looks like our team is evolving into a smash mouth grind and pound team. It’s gonna be a good one boys.

I know
I wasn’t saying that, it just was sounding like you was trying to nullify the argument English was making that our defense should be better than last years also. It wasn’t about comparing the two defense, at all.
You should care about the Steelers defense, especially in Week 1.

This is Quadruple Part Question (kinda sorta...)
1.) How is Troy Polamanu doing considering his injuries last season. If he does get injured again will the Steelers falter like they did last year or have they addressed the issue with FA, draft, or in-house? On a side note, I did not know how much Troy meant for that defense until he was out. That defense was burnt so many times.
2.) What is your realistic goals for Dennis Dixon. Obviously, the running game will be big but will he be used just to maintain and keep the team in the game or is it possible the passing game will be the way they win this game? How will he do against the Falcon’s defense and how do you think your D-line will do against Matt Ryan?
3.) Im a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and Jonathan Dwyer did alot for us over here. How will he be integrated into the system. Do you see him being a big part of the offense? Will they split the workload in Steeler country or do you see Rashard Mendenhall being the primary back? How has my GT alum looked so far?
4.) Finally and probably the most intriguing is the Wide Receiver issue. With Santonio Holmes off to NY Jets territory how Mike Wallace really do this season. Hines isn’t getting any younger and Heath Miller is becoming a reliable target but Wallace has only shown some flashes of brilliance but that was with Hines, Heath and Holmes being covered for the most part. Will he or has he done anything else to prove otherwise this preseason and are there any other Wide Receivers that are worth noting?

1) Troy is looking good, he pulled up on a few hits in the preseason but you can put that down to it being preseason and him still being uncertain. Give him time and he will come back to the form he showed against Tennessee last year on opening night. The defense didn’t crumble solely due to the loss of Troy, we also lost the best 3-4 DE in the league to injury, throwing off our DL rotation. Our 2 ILB’s were both hampered, Timmons by nagging injuries and Farrior by putting on too much weight. We also lost McFadden to the Cardinals for a season forcing Willie Gay ( a great nickel back) to start, which had disastrous consequences for us.
2) The passing game is not going to win us this game, however DD might be able to. He is amazing when in open space and if our dumbass of an OC can use him properly you guys could well be in for a long night. Predicting 170yds 1TD 1INT and 60 rushing yards with 1TD. I think our Dline will not be concerned with Ryan, they will be too busy eating up 2 Olinemen each. Our OLB’s however could get very well acquainted with Ryan, Woodley is an absolute beast and the entire league knows about Harrison, don’t forget Timmons either, he may well post double digit sacks this year.
3) Unfortunately for Dwyer he is the victim of a suddenly deep RB core. Mendenhall is a beast and should destroy some LB’s this year. We have Mwelde Moore as our 3rd down back, a job that he is incredible at. And then there are Redman and Dwyer, competing for a hat on gameday and goaline carries. He has looked poor to start with, coming in overweight and getting injured early on don’t help. He has looked nice running the ball but his catching and blitz pickup are both suspect, don’t expect to see much of him soon.
4) I stated my opinions above about this. Wallace is looking really good, and could become a true superstar this year. He is running his routes as well as Santonio did and his speed is amazing to watch, every QB underthrows him by a good 5 yards. His hands and YAC are not quite at Bluntonio’s level but the rest of it is looking bright for him. Worth noting are Antwan Randel-El and Emmanuel Sanders, ARE because if he is in the backfield with Dixon you could get burned 5 different ways, and Sanders because he has looked good as a rookie and could get some looks in our Trips set that we often use. Oh and Antonio Brown, mainly on punt and kick returns, he beat out Stefan Logan for the spot and will likely make a play or two this season.

How are you feeling about your O-line?
Considering we’ve looked the strongest on the defensive line we’ve looked for years and years, plus the steelers are missing their starting LT and have a rookie center. Pittsburgh are already a team which gives up many sacks, 2nd most in the league last year, now without a two of your starters from last year and facing a much improved line do you feel that Dixon will see a lot of the turf?
by Turner_The_Burner on Sep 7, 2010 9:02 AM EDT reply actions
The line is better
with the rookie center than it was with the vet. You can see a difference. Pouncey is more athletic and has more talent than hartwig does period. We thank Justin for his services over the last two years but its time to move on. Flozell has gotten a lot better and will continue to do so over the course of the season we believe. Him moving to RT is a good thing, they say he has trouble hearing in his right ear, so at RT he has to use his left to hear the snap count. He only has 2 false starts in the 4 preseason games. We hope to see more of the same during the regular season.
I believe the run blocking will be improved. The pass blocking remains to be seen, Essex the RG is the weak link in the line, we’re already campaigning for Pouncey’s brother for the RG spot next year. But to note, when dixon started last year there was only one sack. So Dixon has shown to be able to avoid the rush when given a chance. I doubt you get many sacks especially with the lack of pass rushers, even though your line has improved, its a long way to the top and I believe that Atlanta may now have an average pass-rush as compared to an above average pass rush.

Lets put it this way
For all the people talking about the loss of Holmes.
Mike Wallace, you will get to know him because they are going to try to go deep to him at least once in the game. Its about 95% successful when they do too. Why? Because the man is fast. I mean so fast I want to see him and Chris Johnson race because I honestly don’t know who is faster.
Couple that with the rookies who are both in the same mold as Holmes is, although they aren’t developed. We just need the rooks to be the 3rd receiver, they can handle that role together with Antwaan Randle El. Our passing game won’t suffer because of the receivers, it’ll all depend on if Dixon can make the right reads on the defense.

He’s been lighting it up against our Pro Bowl starting nose tackle. There isn’t a center in the league (aside from Saturday, and maybe Incognito) that can do that.

Probably reminds you a little of Mike Vick perhaps
Hes a dual threat quarterback with that unknown factor. Hes new. Hes unknown. Not as physically gifted or explosive as Vick once was, but hes definitely far beyond the average in terms of speed, agility and elusiveness that your ordinary quarterback. Plus, he plays with a huge level of confidence. He legitimately loves this game and comes across as one of those players who would play for free.

It doesn’t work well.
Rule #1: Double tap.
by Ball Hawk on Sep 7, 2010 9:01 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Sure it does
The only thing is, he has to have an accurate, powerful arm as well.
If a QB is a threat to run every play, but doesn’t have an exceptionally strong arm, safeties can hold routes for 3 seconds, and then converge on the LoS to help contain the running QB. If he doesn’t have an arm, 3 seconds is all the D needs to keep coverage, because his receivers will be out of his range.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Vick had a cannon for an arm way back when, but he had/has no control and even less accuracy. Take away his ability to throw, and all you need to do is prevent him lighting off huge runs.

You can't have both.
If you have an accurate strong armed QB that can run coaches will demand self control and wind up eliminating the running part of the game. Culpeper, Mcnabb,Young and now Tebow there are many others but the winners have to adjust to the pro game or face a broken down body. We only used Vick for his legs because he will never truly be a QB. I’ll admit it’s nice to have a QB that can get away when in trouble but a QB has to make a decision you can’t be great at both.

Good point
Vick admitted that he didn’t study enough when he was in ATL. That probably had a lot to do with it. I remember saying if he would just learn to read defenses and be accurate with his intermediate passes he’d be awesome. But, alas, the dogs were calling him after practice. (Hope thats not too much)

It's true we never had a good defense
But we wasted the prime years of Alge Crumpler and good years from Warrick Dunn and T.J. Duckett, for the most part. Not to mention that Roddy White suddenly turned into one of the league’s best receivers after Vick moved on.

exactly my point
the only year we were good 2004, the whole NFC wasn’t that good. The Packers and Vikings 10-6 were the next best teams who are probably the equivalent of last years Steelers team when they got injured or the Broncos of last year.

Vick couldn't remember the pass routes he'd just called.
He was too baked to remember what he was supposed to do on any pass play.

The thing that worries me is Pittsburgh’s front seven, and a scrambling QB. We have enough receivers to keep TP running around. He can’t focus on just one guy. What receiver is he most likely going to be keeping an eye on, White or Gonzales?
If we can keep Dixon in the pocket and force him to make bad throws, we can see how good our “new” secondary is. How accurate/strong is Dixon’s arm, because all the speed in the world won’t matter if he can’t hit them in stride.
We really need to blitz a lot in this game and keep a shadow on him. I believe that’s the best way to go after a young physically gifted QB. We don’t have to pile up sacks or interceptions, just get off the field on third down.
The last thing that worries me is our run game. If the steeler’s defense is back and healthy it could be a long game for Turner, Norwood, and Snelling.
I’m predicting a close game, even without Big Ben. No more than a touchdown or so. If Turner breaks 90 yards and a TD we win, if not, I fear we may lose. Unless Matt Ryan really is our messiah and throws 4 TDs and 0 INTs.
Ike Tayolar
can handle teams #1 WR. They will probably let Troy just roam, he won’t have anyone one particular assignment the whole game. I would guess of Troy doesn’t cover the TE it will be Timmons, who is super fast and is a good tackler.
Very good point on the second stanza. Dixon problem is that he doesn’t hit the deep routes or doesn’t even see them. He also doesn’t make the right read and take off running. We’ll see how this plays out.
I would say thats the way to go too, bunch of blitzes and hope that they don’t let Wallace run a fly route because he can run pas the corner and the safety.
I wouldn’t expect much running, the steelers defense is always good against the run even last year.
