Falcons announce Practice Squad

Here is the link if you want to read the official article: http://www.atlantafalcons.com/2010/09/falcons-announce-practice-squad/  Hit the jump if you're too lazy to read the article.

Star-divide

"The eight-player practice squad consists of tight end Robbie Agnone, wide receiver Tim Buckley, running back Dimitri Nance, wide receiver Andy Strickland, tackle Jose Valdez, safety Rafael Bush, defensive end Emmanuel Stephens and linebacker Bear Woods."

I'm pretty thrilled that Woods, Nance, and Bush made the practice squad. Any thoughts?

Honestly, Valdez

He looked really good at times in preseason. But c’mon, Bear Woods will definitely have a impact by virtue of having a generally awesome name.

O-Line, TE, LB, and DE seem to be the most likely positions for

some of these younger guys to contribute in the coming seasons. Abraham, Gonzales, and Peterson don’t have much more time left where they can play at a high level and we don’t really have any established stars on the O-line just yet. Those 4 feel the most fluid to me and most likely to be the main areas of concentration in future drafts and Free Agency classes.

Barring any disastrous injuries, we seem fairly well stocked at the other positions with youth and promising talent which is remarkable considering the condition we were in only two years ago at the end of the Patrino-era.

by Leon07 on Sep 5, 2010 10:21 PM EDT reply actions

The ridiculous amount of Bear Woods love around here

is starting to make me dislike him. Honestly, how is Woods going to contribute? Reasonably, in the next couple years we can expect to see him on kickoff coverage…and thats it. Unless you have no faith in Stephen Nicholas, Spoon, and Lofton. Or you expect us to go to the 3-4. Snort of derision

I think a much more likely contributer is Jose Valdez or one of the young receivers. My reasoning: there are just so much more opportunities to get out there. I don’t think we keep Clabo or Blalock for much longer, and possibly not Dahl, depending on how much he will want. So there should be opportunities there. And we all know how much change we’re going to need at the receiver position in a few years…

by orion12 on Sep 5, 2010 10:28 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

He could contribute the same way Coy Wire does.

By being able to play all 3 LB spots. Bear can hit like a champ, and he’s much younger than Coy, who should be on his way out of the league in the next 2-3 years. Heck, if we have a tough-as-nails replacement for him already, why bother finding another? Especially one who will be familiar with the system and have a great work ethic?

So we bangwagon on it/him just to kick things started.

I'm mainly pulling for him because...

he signed my football at OTAs and if he don’t make it my ball with hisbig ass signature would be as useless as tits on a bull.

Easy answer on Woods

A few points – he works hard, has football intelligence, looked to be the captain of the D when the backups were in and he hits hard.

It has absolutely nothing to do with faith in Spoon, Lofton and Nicholas. It has more to do with Peterson should be in his last year and might be ridin’ pine before the end of the season. Wire shouldn’t be on the team regardless of his Special teams play and Adkins got hurt. Woods would be a great 4th LB to back up the “Big Three”, all he needs is some polishing.

by mwalex on Sep 5, 2010 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you're approaching this from the wrong angle, my friend

We love him because he’s larger than life. By all accounts, a real gentleman who wears crazy face paint and looks like he’s got cobras hanging from his head.

But more than that, we’re excited because he looks like a good linebacker. Is he going to crack the starting lineup? Not likely, at least for the next few years. Could he be a very valuable reserve? Hell yes.

Nobody should look at the practice squad and say THIS GUY’S A STARTER NOW It doesn’t work that way. But Tyson Clabo and Harvey Dahl show us that with tenacity, even practice squad guys can push their way up the depth chart. At worst, Woods takes up a practice squad spot for a year. At best, he provides special teams value and may, just maybe, start in some future scenario we can’t even imagine.

I understand...

and honestly, I’m not trying to ruffle any feathers. But to me, he will always be Player-Most-Disproportionally-Loved, unless he makes a Pro Bowl. Then the silliness will be justified. Of course, half the silliness around here isn’t justified, that’s what makes us Falcons fans.

Oh, on-topic answer: my real point is that I see Valdez or either of the receivers having more chance of making an impact on this team in the future. I semantically define impact as being, like, starter-ish (with all the rotations we have going, a player doesn’t need to be a starter to be on the field for a significant amount of time). As a backup linebacker, I don’t think Woods will even be on the field very often, much less so than say a wideout. This (the poll/question) isn’t even about Woods’ talent level; it’s about logistics. And I think a young wideout has much more room to work on this team than a young linebacker.

by orion12 on Sep 6, 2010 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Your points about young WR's are good except

for one weird issue. For some strange reason someone has decided that Finneran is necessary. If Meier hadn’t gotten hurt things might be different but it’s hard to say.

by mwalex on Sep 6, 2010 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions

If Finn were to get injured this season

which, given his history, is likely, one of these receivers will get called up. No telling how they’ll be used in a game (do we even go 5 wide?). But yeah, I’m with you on Finn. I think this is his last year, and hopefully he comes back as a coaching assistant.

And hey, I get what you're saying

I did something even weirder than voting for Woods: I voted for Rafael Bush. There’s something about the kid I just like, and I’m willing to bet he’ll be providing some nice value for the Falcons by 2011.

I like that kid.

Can’t remember where I saw it (maybe the Atlanta Falcons site?) but he had some interview/story about how he was a Falcon fan his whole life and it was his dream to play here and all that. Always nice to hear.

And he looks damn good, too. I’d love to see him backing up William Moore someday.

Dahl and Clabo came off the practice squad

Valdez may very well do the same kind of thing assuming we have problems with Hawley or Mike Johnson

Well aren't we a negative Nancy, a real Debbie downer if I may.

But most likely right as well. I’m befuddled by our WR situation. WTF, I really believe that part of Smittys strategy to get these guys to play better is to make them trust him. He shows loyalty even given the amount of talent or lack thereof. For instance he says things like, I think Michael (Jenkins) is really developing as a reciever or, Finnerin brings a real veteran presence to our guys. Maybe he believes this approach will inspire a synergistic locker room instead of developing a fear based atmosphere. WTF am I saying? This is football get your asses out there and perform otherwise it’s your ass. We need talent out there not buble players that might help out here or there. AZ had Fitz, Q and Breaston. Cowboys have Austin, Williams and Bryant. We need to man up and make it so. If we want Finn in the L room make his ass a coach. If we want Jenks around fine but move him down the board. I did have a dream lastnight that HD turned out to be one of the leagues breakout best receivers this year. My dreams always come true.

Rule #1: Double tap.

by Ball Hawk on Sep 5, 2010 11:26 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

But I don't think we are this type of team

We have to realize who’s in charge
Our FO is about getting predominately drafted guy and undrafted free agencies.
To ask our front office to go after some big name free agent that may have character issues or contract/$$$ issues…we aren’t likely to persue.

One think I’ve seen each year we go after one big name
2008 Michael Turner
2009 Tony Gonzalez
Both have made impacts
2010 Dunta Robinson
2011 TBA

We’ve already made our move
Besides any additional guys we get are mediocre at best
Look at Dominique Foxworth and Marty Booker.
Do we want to make another trade like the Braves with Rick Ankiel, Derrick Lee, Alex Gonzalez, that haven’t done THAT much since making the trade. They can’t beat the Marlins. They SUCK!

Dude, they're better than what we had before

We needed Derek lee to replace glass at 1st since he is busy playing 3rd because of chipper’s torn acl

Oh yeah… Were still in first place so we don’t suck that bad.

Back to falcons football: if biermann has a breakout year and Sidbury shows that he is ready to inherit Abe’s spot do we go wr in the draft?

by FLA_Falcon on Sep 6, 2010 5:53 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

They just lost to the Pirates today

After the Marlins gave them a gift after being the Phils in Philadelphia
They don’t take advantage when they have the chance
Hopefully the Falcons are more like Peyton Mannings Offense (4th and 2 against New England)

Dissapointed to not see Ryan Wolfe

But maybe that’s who Kerry Meier is, and Identical but better player.
But it was said above correctly, the guys on the practice squad are probably positions of need in depth next in line.
