49ers-Falcons: Ask Niners Nation
This is Fooch from Niners Nation. With the 49ers and Falcons preparing to do battle this Sunday I thought it would be useful to answer your questions about the 2010 San Francisco 49ers. It's been a fairly abysmal start for the 49ers with a beatdown week one, a gut-wrenching late loss to the Saints in week two, and another beatdown in week three. Turmoil is in full swing in 49ers-land as the team announced they've replaced offensive coordinator JImmy Raye with the QB coach Mike Johnson (a guy you might be familiar with from his days with Vick).
I'm going to post a FanShot at NN about this so we can get some other 49ers fans over here helping out, but in the meantime feel free to fire away with question.
This FanPost was written by one of The Falcoholic's talented readers. It does not necessarily reflect the views of The Falcoholic.

Raye
Everybody was calling for it. Not sure if it’s the be all end all answer to the 49ers problems, but it’s a step in the right direction. He was just way too conservative in his play-calling and considering the weapons the 49ers have on offense it made sense. Mike Johnson is believed to be more willing to open things up, which is something the 49ers absolutely have to do.

Everything went wrong
The Chiefs loss was fairly abysmal. Literally everything went wrong (well except for Joe Nedney’s 51 yard field goal). The team fired OC Jimmy Raye this morning so that’s certainly a positive step because for every step forward by the offense we saw two steps back. Alex Smith may very well not be the answer, but I think Mike Johnson might put him in a better position to succeed.
On defense, they might want to learn how to defend screens. I think the defense was so worn out form the offense keeping them on the field that it wasn’t shocking that they got blown up.
Singletary probably isn’t on the hot seat with ownership (he definitely is with fans) but a couple more losses will make it interesting (the schedule isn’t easy for the next few weeks).

Singletary seems like a spectacularly obstinate man
Any thoughts on the interview where he basically reamed the guy out for asking obvious questions?

not his finest hour
He definitely handled that poorly. He’s certainly a stubborn man but I think it’s just as much about him being true to his own personality. Some consider it a lack of self control. He’s an intriguing personality to say the least. A lot more interesting than some of the bland coaches we generally see in sports.

I like that about him
I just think it’s a dangerous thing to never accept criticism. We’ve heard a lot about his lack of a quality grasp on the X’s and O’s of coaching. Can you comment on that?

He's not a coordinator
He never will be.
He’s supposed to inspire the team, prepare them, and manage the game from the sidelines.
This season he hasn’t done anything of the above right.
Which is why many 49er fans think this may be his last season at HC.
I mean, he doesn’t do much and he’s not really good at what he does do.

Xs and Os
From a coaching perspective he definitely seems to not have the best grasp on that. Although I think it’s Xs and Os on offense as opposed to general Xs and Os.
If Mike Johnson can provide a solid game plan on offense I think that can overcome Singletary’s weaknesses when it comes to Xs and Os. And I think Singletary can still be a success in this league based on his primary strength (primarily that of motivation).
As far as never accepting criticism, I don’t think that’s entirely true. I think he’s a very reactionary coach and will in fact make necessary changes but it’s a question of how much he thinks through those changes.

Fair enough
It’s an interesting conversation to have. There was a popular media perception of Jim Mora Jr. as a decent coach, but we all hated him because he coddled his players and did little to maximize the talents of his players.

Never know what you're getting with a first time head coach.
They could be lightning in a bottle (like Tomlin) or worse than the incumbent. Kinda like why the backup quarterback is so popular when the team is losing.

I've got a few questions
1. What is your opinion on Coach Singletary? He seems like a great motivator, but how are his X’s and O’s?
2. Fran Gore, with the exception of 2 plays we have been stout against the run. Mendenhall a bigger physical back like Gore was having a hard time getting consistent yardage against us. How will the 49ers scheme to get him more yards.
3. Crabtree, was he worth the holdout, or overrated?
4. Vernon Davis, seems to be getting off to a slow start stats wise. I have him on my fantasy team, and let’s say I’m not happy with his performance so far this year. How wil he match up against a guy like Spoon or Moore/DeCoud?
5. Alex Smith, which one will show up on Sunday?
6. Your defense, played very well against the saints but was lit up by Seattle and KC. What did KC and Seattle do to dominate that the Saints did not?
A few more sorry
7. You drafted two O lineman in the first round this year. Looking back now, how have they performed, and were they worth the price.
8. Besides Vernon Davis and Gore, who is a threat in the receiving game?
by Whyte Bler 000 on Sep 27, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Thanks for the questions
1. Sing to me is a great motivator but not the greatest strategic coach. His mistake was hiring even worse strategic coaches (Jimmy Raye) to help the team when he needed a smart offensive mind to run the offense.
2. Right now that is up in the air. Raye would run up the middle 75% of the time. I think we all have no clue how they’re going to run Gore on Sunday.
3. I don’t think Raye had any idea of how to use Crabtree. He’s not the fastest receiver, but he runs crisp routes and will catch pretty much everything. They just need to figure out how to use him.
4. To me, it feels like the 49ers forget about VD during games. When they throw to him, he makes plays, but they haven’t been throwing to him as often. A linebacker though can’t cover Davis because of his speed, so the Falcons definitely have to use DeCoud to cover him. (Loved DeCoud at Cal. Glad to see him in the Falcons starting lineup.)
5. Your guess is as good as mine about which Smith will show up.
6. The 49ers were lit up by Seattle and KC because of a lack of pass rush. They were able to get to Brees and force him out of the pocket and make uncomfortable throws. They didn’t do that against Seattle and KC.
7. Iupati the guard has been terrific. Anthony Davis has been playing at right tackle and it’s clear that he’s going through growing pains. He’s only 20-years old. They were definitely worth the price of two 1st round picks.
8. Josh Morgan is another threat, but once again it’s like the offense forgets he’s on the field.
"Too much awesome on my feet."-Brian Wilson
"Time for the laser show, boys!"- Aubrey Huff
I'll answer as well.
1. Not every head coach needs to be proficient in the X’s and O’s, but Singletary seems to be even worse in that regard. I like him as a HC, to a large extent, but we need some coordinators to back him up.
2. How will we scheme, now that we’ve switched coordinators? I’m not sure. Ideally, the best way to get Gore some yards against a stout run D would be misdirection. I think the Falcons can be surprised by some different running looks, some outside, some Westbrook confusion, things like that, providing the 49ers can scheme such things.
3. He was worth the holdout, and I think he can be a fantastic weapon in the league moving forward. When the ball is in his hands, defenders just look silly. He matured a lot after the first awful game of the season.
4. If the offense gets it together, I like Vernon Davis in any matchup against the Falcons, with all due respect.
5. The one from week two, I firmly believe.
6. The Seahawks and Chiefs did two entirely different things. The Hawks didn’t look that great offensively, the 49ers were just tired eventually and things just didn’t go our way. The Chiefs though, there was some wizadry there. I’m going with magic. Todd Haley is a trained wizard.
7. Mike Iupati has performed well, and Anthony Davis has shown a lot, but overall, I’m disappointed with the unit on the road. Protip: Be very loud on Sunday.
8. Dominique Zeigler can do a lot to sustain drives on third down and can out-jump any DB. He may get more looks this week, too.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.
Thanks guys
Up top and down below!
The biggest thing that has me worried about this week is how physical the NO game was. We ran Turner 30 times. Both Turner and Snelling dished out a pounding and took multiple hits each time they ran. I hope they get a light load in practice this week to be fresh.

answers
1. He doesn’t seem to be an Xs and Os guy, but more of a great motivator (he was an inspirational speaker before he went into coaching). He’s a smart guy because he was the on-field brains of that 85 Bears defense, but it’s not exactly translating well to the job of a coach. Part of the problem is that he seems to be a fairly stubborn individual, but at the same time he seems to be a very reactionary coach who will make big changes because he feels he has to do something. All in all, he’s a very unique personality and it’s hard to decide what I feel about him from game to game.
2. In regards to your questions about the 49ers offense, all bets are off with the firing of the offensive coordinator. I’d like to think the team will try and use more outside pitches to get him more yards. But honestly it’s hard to tell what will happen at this point.
3. Last year he was worth the holdout and I think long term he’ll be a great wide receiver. But again, his role could change with the new OC>
4. His first two games were decent enough but he’s just not getting the touchdowns yet. Last year he had 13 touchdowns which was huge for his fantasy performance. He’ll be fine.
5. Honestly not sure who will show up in light of the coaching changes.
6. The 49ers offense was able to give the defense rest that we didn’t see against the Seahawks and Chiefs. Also, it seems like our team as a whole plays up or down to its given opponents. The 49ers defense can be overly aggressive and gets killed on screens, which the Seahawks and Chiefs both took advantage of.
7. LG Iupati has been fairly consistent with a few struggles, while RT Anthony Davis has had more ups and downs as would be expected with a rookie. I think it was worth the price because they’ve both shown considerably talent, and if both work out the 49ers will have a nice chunk of their o-line set for the foreseeable future.
8. Josh Morgan and Dominique Zeigler are two wide receivers that get mixed in and can provide good hands. Keep an eye out for Delanie Walker, the backup tight end. He has the speed of a receiver and often is all over the place in a variety of roles.
Sorry for some of these answers but it’s so hard to tell what the offense will do this Sunday given the change at offensive coordinator. The playbook won’t change, but the scheming will likely change a good deal.

This has to be the most deflated 49er fanbase I've seen in a while
Although the firing of the OC Jimmy Raye has given hope to some. The 49ers were awful 4-5 years ago, but I think everybody kinda accepted it. This year, high expectations and reality came crashing together really hard.
Seems to me almost everybody at NN is predicting a loss in Atlanta, given the shellacking last year (and this year it’s a road game!) The 49ers seem capable of hanging with the best of them (Saints, Vikings, Colts) but just can’t get their act together and win consistently.
1. With the Arizona game reminding folks of last year’s blowout and the 49ers’ narrow loss to the Saints team we just narrowly beat, I think a lot of people are going to write this one off without really thinking about it. SF showed some spark against New Orleans and had a real chance to win if not for some crazy mistakes. Given that history, though, would a 49ers win constitute a major upset, or are the Falcons overrated after a lucky win against a big-name team?
2. With the exception of two huge runs, the Falcons have been very stout against the run and kept Rashard Mendenhall and Pierre Thomas pretty well bottled up. Are you at all worried that Frank Gore gets shut down, and can SF win if he does?
3. Who should we be worried about that we don’t know about?
Answers....
1. The 49ers have actually been able to play up to their good opponents and play like crap against most everybody else it seems like. Last year they swept the division winning Cards, they took the Vikings to the wire, and they played very well against the Colts. I wouldn’t be surprised if they hung with the Falcons, although they could just as well get blown out. There are a lot of question marks at this point with all the changes.
2. In the past if Gore struggles the 49ers struggle. I’m sorry to fall back on the same answer as I’ve used earlier in this FanPost (and in the answer to question 1) but there are so many question marks on offense I honestly don’t know what to expect. I will say that Alex Smith’s best games have generally come when Frank Gore succeeds.
3. I’d argue Shawntae Spencer, who will probably be covering Roddy White. Spencer is a veteran corner who has quietly becoming probably the 49ers best cornerback. He doesn’t get a lot of INTs but he’s generally consistently solid. People may know about him but folks rarely talk about him.

against the chiefs I noticed the d-line wasn't getting much push
and the pass rush hasn’t been that good. We got a couple of sacks on Brees but I think only one each against the seahawks and chiefs.
Go 49ers
That sounds like our defense from last year
but isn’t your secondary suppose to be somewhat good too? OR Has that always been the weakness your defense and teams with passing attacks finally figured it out?

Spencer and Clemments are both solid/good.

I haven't read every post either, so I'll handle the 2AM shift.
There’s nothing wrong with Gore that a nice hole wouldn’t cure. He didn’t run a down in training camp, so he’s fresh. We drafted Anthony Dixon in the 6th round from your neighbor, Miss State, who seems to be working out. He’s more of a Gore substitute than his actual backup – Brian Westbrook.
If the team was performing anywhere near expectations, revenge might be a theme song but we’ve been so underwhelmed with success, that decent playcalling, consistency and a “W” head our wish list.
