Atlanta Falcons-New Orleans Saints Open Thread

Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints, Sep 26, 2010 1:00 PM EDT

This game is a proving grounds for the Falcons.

Lose to the Saints and every sportswriter in the nation puts them second in the NFC South. Beat the defending Super Bowl champions and win accolades from everyone ever. Not exactly fair to have that much riding on one game, but you know how it goes.

The Falcons will come prepared. If they can generate some offense and the defense can clamp down on the Saints' offense for the first time in what seems like years, they can pull this off. Nothing would make me happier today than seeing that happen....so Falcons, make it happen!

Use this as your discussion thread for the entire game. I'll be along as much as possible, and we'll toss up a new one come halftime. Go go go!

Star-divide

Who? Atlanta Falcons @ New Orleans S, 1 p.m. EST

Where? Unsuperdome, New Orleans, Louisiana

Weather? Dome, people. No weather in a dome.

Injuries? Falcons will likely be missing Erik Coleman and perhaps Michael Jenkins.

The Saints are missing Reggie Bush. Should remove one dimension of their offense.

Foe? Be polite when you head to Canal Street Chronicles. Despite their awful choice in teams, they're still good people. As far as I know.

GO FALCONS! Let's scandalize these Saints!

My prediction :

TD;s for TG, Snelling, White, Burner, and Finn.

Sacks for Abe and Beer Man.

Picks by Dunta and Spoon.

38 – 27 Falcons win!

Reggie Bush

Is it just me or is the loss of Reggie Bush not a huge deal to the Saints? I mean, he was a great player in college. But has he really performed to the level of the #2 overall pick? I think Bush is a decent receiving threat but not much of a threat running between the tackles. We are slightly undersized on the d-line, and using Pierre Thomas to wear down the defense could cause more problems for us than Reggie Bush ever could.

It takes a certain element out of their offense.

And their punt return game.

I think it is a decent loss for them. I’ll take any Saint injuries any day.

we gotta play them just as they had bush

they will run the same things screens and things to receivers and thomas. i think they have a back filling in for bush named chris ivory. speed back same style of play

by DEMBIRDZCUZ! on Sep 26, 2010 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

A threat at best...

He hasn’t returned a punt for a touchdown since 2008. Last year, he only had two punt returns of more than 20 yards. He was only averaging 8.3 yards a return this year. I don’t think he is the threat everyone perceives him to be. Just a big name now

He removes a good

screen/check down game.
Pierre is dangerous, but Bush had that explosiveness where he could take it the distance on any given check down.

what I hate

is that this is expected to be a pressure game for Ryan. Win and you’re in the club, lose, and you;re only aiming for a wild card in the eyes of all experts and fans.
The reason I hate this is because in most cases our Falcons fold when it’s time for a big game. the reality is that we get to play these hated Saints twice and even if we lose this one, but win the ATL game, and take care of the games we’re supposed to win – we will be in a good position to advance to playoffs. c’mon, the majority of Falcoholics marked this game a loss. What I would like to see from our players is a pressure-free game. and then they can actually win.

week 17

was against the team that cared little about the end result. of course, it doesn’t mean the victory wasn’t sweet.

the thing is, in both games against the Saints last year everybody kept saying it’s time for the Falcons to step up. and they did. but both games were killed through our own mistakes at the end.

we need to reverse that trend.

I think the Bush factor is getting way overplayed in the pre-game

Is he the second most important member of their offense, after Drew Brees? I doubt it. The man has always been Brian Westbrook-lite. I don’t see how missing him is really a big deal for the Saints. Pierre Thomas is a better running back and the real threat.

by Bronn on Sep 26, 2010 12:51 PM EDT reply actions

He's not critically important

But those passes to him in the flats have traditionally been an issue for the Falcons. I won’t miss having him in the game.

Everyone always says...

“Oh if it weren’t for this or that we would’ve won that game.” Like last year we always said we could’ve beaten the Saints had a couple of things gone our way…But it’s precisely because of those “couple of things” that we lose. Like today it could easily be those kick returns that lose us this game. You just have to find a way to win, and against the Saints you have to be “ON” all the time.

glad we had a nice drive, but...

this first quarter is EXTREMELY disappointing. blown opportunity on a turnover, and an 80 yard pass play for Brees… those were pretty much the two things you couldn’t let happen this week. if you give the ball back here, the Saints have an opportunity to start running away with this thing already.

regardless of whether we win this game...

i think this team is already showing how improved they are. this is arguably the toughest game on our schedule this year and we’re matching them blow for blow.

as much as i want a win today, i won’t be too bothered if we don’t get one, especially considering it’s on their homefield. i just needed to see us come in and play at their level, which we’re totally doing right now.

having said that, let’s kill them in the 2nd half. i HATE the Saints.

me too...

i’m just saying, even when you lose sometimes, you can take encouraging things from it. and so far this is an encouraging game.

i’m not a believer in the notion that “a win is a win” or “a loss is a loss”. i think there are different degrees of wins and losses that are big indicators of where your team is at.

last year is a great example… we were playing teams early on and beating them, but we weren’t doing it the way a really good team should, and it ended up being an omen for us missing the playoffs.

true...

i mean a lot depends on the 2nd half, but i guess what i’m saying is that if we play well in the 2nd half and come up short, it’s much easier to take than a game where Brees hangs 40+ on us and blows us out.

so far in this game, i see some very encouraging signs – our D picking Brees off, our offense putting together drives that don’t stall, and the overall makeup of this team in taking a game that could have started to get away and scrapping right back to tie it up

there are a few things you have to do to beat the Saints, and we did them ALL to perfection in that 2nd quarter

by cheshire falcon on Sep 26, 2010 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

true

I really like our ability to make plays when they count in this game and I think that after the Steelers game they looked for ways to improve on that and it shows.

But ultimately, I REALLY want the Saints to lose this. Not just because I hate the Saints (although that is a major driving factor), but because I think it would drive up the confidence level on our team a lot as well….. and I really hate the Saints.

Plus, three 2-1 teams in the NFC South (assuming the Bucs don’t do anything miraculous) would make things interesting as well.

Yeah, but our D isn't the Vikes' D.

Not yet, at least.

The offense is playing like it wants to win, today. The D is starting to feed off of that.

Just you wait. When we get into late 3rd/4th quarter, their D is going to be dead. 22:8 time of possession is absurd. I’ve never seen such a skewed amount before.
