Falcons Waive Rob Bruggeman, Welcome Back Jonathan Babineaux
I thought keeping Rob Bruggeman on the roster seemed like an odd move.
Now that Jonathan Babineaux is returning from his one game suspension, Bruggeman has been waived by the Falcons. This is a team with quality depth along the offensive line, so it's not like Bruggeman was a necessary piece of the puzzle here, and suspended players don't count against the 53-man, so someone had to go. It does mean that Joe Hawley or Mike Johnson will be active on game days, unlike against the Steelers. Farewell, sweet Bruggeman.
The excellent news here is that we're welcoming back Babineaux. The Falcons turned in a quality effort against the Steelers, mostly limiting the damage from Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman through a strong rotation of tackles up the middle, but Babineaux is still easily their best defensive tackle.
More to the point, he'll help our pass rush right away. Trey Lewis and Corey Peters generated some push on Sunday, but Babs is a threat to lunge into the backfield at all times. Against stone-footed Derek Anderson and the Cardinals' offensive line, that should get him within sniffing distance of a couple of sacks and open things up around the edges for John Abraham and Kroy Biermann.
Thoughts?

Happy Day!
It’s been a little rough playing Madden Online with Corey Peters at DT. It’ll be nice to have Babs back in the rotation.
Oh, and good for the real Falcons, as well. Need to put some pressure on Derek Anderson before he can get the ball to Fitzgerald. Force some turnovers.
Good to have Babs back!
Could of used him against the Steelers. Could of been a difference maker. Should be a factor against the Cards. Agree with Tron5000…
CANT WAIT
I was pleasantly surprised at how well the D line played without Babs… Should be exciting to watch next weekend. Hopefully the offense can play to the level of the defense.

Bruggeman
(Probably) was only on the Initial 53-man Roster b/c Hawley was nicked up, and Coach Smith needed a backup C active on game-day. It’s interesting that we’re keeping all 5 DT’s. I guess they didn’t want to risk losing Vance Walker to another team if they tried to slip him back to the Practice Squad and/or they’re still bringing Peria Jerry back slowly (unless my eyes are really bad, it was 99 Walker starting the game and getting most of the snaps against PIT, not 94 Jerry). I will be very interested to see which DT is inactive this Sunday.
And yes, I hope Babs eats Derek Anderson for lunch.

Sometimes Probably isn't good enough
We need a Valovine to protect our investments
We lost Nance off the Squad to the Packers.
What’s next? The Bears take Bear Woods to replace Urlacher?
The Vikings take our WR from the Squad?
Probably?

Will see playing time once babs puts Anderson out. I see a concussion in his future.

I JUST SAW THIS ON ROTOWORLD
The Packers reportedly have plans to sign RB Dimitri Nance off the Falcons’ practice squad to take Ryan Grant’s roster spot.
Picture a poor man’s Jason Snelling. Nance is a bigger back with a nice hands and short-yardage potential. He would function as Brandon Jackson’s backup until sixth-rounder James Starks comes off the PUP list at mid-season.

Great to have Babs back...
hopefully Michael Turner will be back as well.

I really hope who we saw Sunday was the bizarro Matt Ryan
as opposed to his 2008-2009 season being the bizarro.

Ice is back according to the following prophecy:
All right stop collaborate and listen
Ice is back with my brand new invention
Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Flow like a harpoon daily and nightly
Will it ever stop yo I don’t know
Turn off the lights and I’ll glow
To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal
Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle
Dance go rush to the speaker that booms
I’m killing your brain like a poisonous mushroom
Deadly when I play a dope melody
Anything less than the best is a felony
Love it or leave it you better gain weight
You better hit bull’s eye the kid don’t play
If there was a problem yo I’ll solve it

I still don't see this....
I don’t really think Matty had such a bad game. Given that we had no ground attack and pretty much no play calling to help stretch the field I think he did ok. (Not great admittedly, but it could have also been much worse.)
Look at Peyton Manning, he had pretty much the same lack of run support and also lost too. Ok, sure Peyton had a great game individually anyway but anyone that wants to compare Ryan to Manning on equal terms needs to start passing around whatever they’re smoking since the rest of us could really use some.
I guess I’m too new to this, but I can’t find the -1 rec button for actually quoting out anything from Vanilla Ice.
I agree with you.
I don’t think Matt Ryan was that bad.
But tommorrow I’m going to review the game on my DVR and see what you guys are talking about. I had to work sunday, so I missed a lot of “live action”

No it wasn't bad...
It was horribly average. From overthrows, to floating passes, to throwing to Roddy 20+ times(I don’t mind he’s on my fantasy team but I’m pretty sure the steelers figured it out)to the coup de grace staring down roddy his entire route on the INT. This is what you’d expect from a Mark Bulger or a Rex Grossman not a 3rd year 1st round draft pick who has shown what he can do. We didn’t draft him to be average, we drafted him to be the guy that could put his team on his back and not flinch(happy feet). Here’s hoping he comes around. Bout time we had another Bartkowski.
maybe Matt
Should take dancing classes before game time to get those jItters out.
Vick used to run early in the game to settle down, maybe this could be Ryan’s way of doing the same.

It does pain me a little to admit it....
but yeah, you’re right. Not that I mind you being right, just the part about Ryan being only average. I had that same problem with him staring down Roddy too.
On the other hand, let’s face it, how many 1st round picks are worth it? If I had to choose between Matt Ryan staying average or becoming a JaMarcus Russell/Ryan Leaf clone then average sounds ok to me.
That’s not to say that I think he’s just average or will stay that way, I think he has a lot of potential and the major question for me is just how much he can show with the current offensive play calling. I think we see far more of what he’s capable of being when running the hurry-up and I would like to see a lot more of that. Especially if our offense is struggling.
by ErrantFalcon on Sep 15, 2010 1:04 AM EDT up reply actions
It's not that Ryan had that bad a game
it’s more that his progression as a QB is going slowly. Things like not looking off receivers and happy feet. The happy feet could have been due to defensive pressure.
As a contrast it wasn’t that many years ago that a QB didn’t start games until their fourth season, at the earliest. Now rookies are starting. We do have to temper our expectations some what.
His progression is in neutral right now
And slowly rolling backwards. Last season was two parts for him, 1st half very solid, 2nd half very very average, yes he was hurt as was Turner but I don’t think that had anything to do with him forcing balls into tight coverage resulting in multiple picks and overthrows. He can turn it around, Bart wasn’t built in a day. Why the happy feet, i don’t know. IRS not like he’s David Carr back there getting sacked every other play.
