Chill the F... Out

Guys, what the hell?  Why is everyone so damn negative now?  It's one game, and a damn tough one, Dixon or not.  I guess you all think that no matter the defense we should put up 40 points again and have 5 or more 30+ plays.  Sure, we have the weapons to do it, but what if the defense has the weapons to COVER it. I'd say we faced arguably a top 3 run defense team today.  So of course Turner looked slow or average (tho i did see a few Reggie Bush type hops out of him).

I must have watched a different game than you guys.  I saw Ryan realize the running game wouldn't work well and throw to Roddy for 111 yards,  not to mention the other guys.  He threw completions to 8 different people, and only one pass to probably the BEST safety in the NFL.  Not much Ryan can do about the playcalling except when he's running the no-huddle.  He seemed focused early on Gonzo, for the 1000 catch, but soon realized EVERYONE was focused on Gonzo.

I saw THE best Falcon defensive performance I have ever witnessed.  They took on a HUGE offensive line, and a really well-rounded running back and shut them down on the run game (minus the 50 yarder from holding). We took on a SUPER fast Wallace, and a really nasty man named Ward.  Ward in my opinion is one of the craftiest, most physical WRs in the game.  Yeah he got open.  Did he score?  Compare his numbers to Roddy?

Long story short, I dont see why you are all suddenly so negative now.

And good god, it’s wonderful to see that not everyone slit their wrists when we lost a close game to a playoff-caliber team. Holy hell, I know we lost, but what a game! Did anyone see our defense? We have an excellent run defense! In fact, our entire defense was rock solid. It took 5 quarters for them to score 2 TD’s worth of points. Sean Weatherspoon was all over the field, HD had some good plays, and even Weems looked like a competent receiver.

All good building blocks for this season. All we need is to get the run game going, and we’ll be alright. That’ll take a LOT of pressure off Matt Ryan, because there’s no way he should be throwing 44 times…

BABS WILL HELP NXT WEEK!

Also glad to HD, Weems, and a healthy Norwood involved in the passing game

Noticing trends is what concerns me

By no means is it the end of our season, but there’s a lot to be concerned about.

First off throughout the preseason everyone said that the first team woes would “sort themselves out in the regular season.” Yet the same problem of not being able to score TD’s carried over into this game.

Second our offensive line got man-handled all game long, mainly in the run game. Turner could get nothing going, and his confidence suffered. If our boys on the line can’t get leverage then many of our assumptions of our offense being “great” or having the potential to, will be pointless.

Third, it seemed that the Steelers knew the snap count and what the play would be, either a run or a pass. If the play-calling can’t get more creative then it’ll be quite a problem.

Fourth, we (the Falcons and us here) talked about the need for the big plays. The Falcons had only two plays of 20+ Yards and the biggest was 23 yards. For all the talk we just couldn’t get it done. I think this had a lot to do with our protection. Sure, Matt wasn’t sacked 20 times, but he had to get rid of the ball extremly quickly which didn’t allow any downfield routes to develop.

Those are just some of my concerns, and your a fool if you think that everything will fix itself next week for Arizona. This team isn’t as playoff worthy as some of us thought, and we can’t just look at a schedule and tick Wins off saying “Oh Pittsburgh, Win, Arizona, Win, Saints lose…blah blah blah”

This team has the potential, but whether they put that into on field performace is the key question. And it just doesn’t seem like this team has what it takes to be consistent.

No but I think in that game he did, because of the Offensive line

He was extremely hesitant after about his 5th run, and the line was doing him no favors.

I tend to agree to some level...

Last year, it was the kicking game in the preseason, and I would remind myself “it’s only the pre-season”… See how well that worked out.

by JASmith on Sep 14, 2010 6:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah its one game but

one game is the difference between finishing 9-7 and missing the playoffs instead of 10-6 and being the wild card team. Everyone, us and the media, came into this season thinking we could score on any team and we couldn’t even put up a TD. Mularky being predictable, Ryan staring down his recievers, and our running backs looking scared to hit the holes being only the first game or not is something to worry about. We saw a lot of this in the preseason and thought it would work itself out before week one and it hasn’t. But with all our problems on offense our defense looked like a top 10 defense. Loved the guys hustling to the ball. I think this D has a chance to play with any offense in the league. Am I throwing away all my Falcon gear and jumping ship? Hell NOOOOO but I am worried. Plus if they win 12 in a row you can come on here and just tell me how dumb I was to get so worked up over one game and I’ll take it and tell you good job keeping your head up while I’ve got my panties all in a bunch.

I Rec'd this

I know we’re Falcons fans, but I think our fingers are fumbling for the panic button a little early.

Honestly, it’s not that we lost this game that bothers me. I knew we might lose to the Steelers. It was just seeing the offense look horribly, horribly lost that really concerned me.

Ryan looks like he's scared to trust anyone else.

He targeted Roddy 20-something times. I don’t have the exact number in front of me, but that was around half of his attempts. That’s insane. Manning always gets like 85 people involved, as does Brees. Brees just has 5 superstar weapons on offense. We have maybe 2.5.

I think we’ll be alright. Just gonna hope we rebound.

Ryan is not Manning or Brees

Expecting him to be will only lead to disappointment.

He is a young man in his early twenties who has been made the face of a franchise and asked to not only salvage it but lead it to the promise land. And he doesn’t have the polish of a Brady, Manning or Brees that only long years of dedicated practice can earn.

When he’s in doubt he tries to put the ball into the hands of the best players on the field. Which he will either be condemned or praised for based only on the success of the tactic. We’d be just as quick to anger if he did the opposite and that didn’t work.

by Leon07 on Sep 13, 2010 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

He doesn't need to be either of those QBs, but he needs to understand what makes them great.

They make all their WRs look good by spreading the ball around and not giving googly eyes to their targets. They also run flippin screen passes, something our OC knows nothing about.

Remember week 1 is aberration week
Are they good?
Probably.
But the Niners made them look good with all those Alex Smith Turnovers.
The Niner did hold the Seahawks Scoreless for a moment, so I’m sure the Falcons can do the same too with a slightly better offense…yes our offense is still a little better than the niners.

Its Any Given Sunday!

On any given Sunday, anything can happen, key injuries, mistakes, big plays… A loss is a loss, it was a hard fought battle, but the offense made me sick to my stomach yesterday, squawndering scoring chances. But u ALWAYS end with a positive & that is our D looked like a top 5 defense yesterday. One game you guys, we’ll be fine…like always

I would Rec this post multiple times if allowed.

Yesterday stunk. There were positives, but there were a bunch of negatives…

However, we weren’t going undefeated. Period. We still have all 6 division games and all our games against the teams we are battling against for playoff spots in the NFC.

I mentioned this before the game, but I was worried about this game. It’s not like we lost to the Rams. Our team thrives on being able to run the ball, and Pittsburgh was not having any of that. I thought we should have used Norwood more to shake it up. Turner will be fine, as will Ryan (who I thought did well, interception aside), for very few Ds will be as good as the Steelers’ D in Heinz Field.

Do Falcons fans think that the Colts, Vikings and Cowboys are down for the count? Do they think the loser of the Ravens v. Jets game is eliminated from the playoffs tonight? I strongly doubt it.

Plenty of football left.

Am I the only one who actually thought the offense looked BETTER than I expected? I knew we wouldn’t be able to run on the Steelers, and Ryan’s clearly better than he was last year – no more happy feet in the face of pressure (and there was tons of it), no more locking onto Gonzo constantly, plenty of good throws and good decisions – and the bottom line is, there’s no shame in losing on the road to a tough team like Pittsburgh, especially when it was such a close game. If I have a complaint with the offense it’s that I would’ve liked to have seen more of Norwood instead of giving Turner 20 pointless carries.

by langsty on Sep 13, 2010 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

Aside from ~ 5 passes, I agree with you.

A few of those early passes sailed pretty badly, but at least he was throwing away from the coverage and not getting picked. Most of the time he was on target- there were like 4 or 5 drops in the game which were frustrating to me, 2 of which were by Norwood. No wonder Mularkey won’t give him screens.

by orion12 on Sep 13, 2010 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Just how low were your expectations?

I thought the D played a great game. JA98 did an excellent job and might have found his position. All the linemen looked great. The LB’s had a great game. Peterson’s INT was great both in the catch and how he sniffed out the play. Spoon looked very good. Other than a few blown coverages the DB’s looked very good and Owens almost pulled off an amazing INT.

The offense was the same miserable mess from last year. I don’t blame the players. ATL has a ton of talent. While the OL had a hard time against the Steelers front 7, it was the Steelers front 7, probably the best they’ll see this year.

My issues with the offense all have to do with the schemes and plays. Mehlarkey is not doing the team any favors. Yep, there is time to sort out the issues but it has to be fast. NO isn’t going to slow down and let us catch up.

by mwalex on Sep 13, 2010 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not defending negative comments

but I understand them. Born and raised in Atlanta, being a Falcons fan has been the ultimate exercise in getting yanked around. Sometimes I found myself wishing they would suck consistently rather than showing so much promise one year, just to return to anonymity (’98, anyone?).

I can’t speak for new fans, but I’m sure the older ones are a little scarred and just worried that the winning ways of the past 2 years are gonna go up in smoke, just like they always have.

I am just as bummed that we lost to the steelers b/c I was one of those people that thought we’d win b/c of Dixon starting and also the fact that its year 3 of the matty ice era and HD is back and Turner is slim again. With that all being said, Week 1 is basically an extension of preseason. Basically week 5 of preseason. Now before you start crucifying me hear this. Week 4 your starters play one drive, so you have 2 weeks off after playing 3 weeks of spot duty after an entire off season. How many teams lost in week one looked bad, San Fran, Minnesota, and even indy and cincy played poorly for at least one half. Then you have teams like KC playing well. With in the past few years the broncos started 8-0 and missed the playoffs and the titans started like 0-8 and almost made the post season. It is for sure not time to worry and don’t forget we still have what is considered a bit of a soft schedule. The falcons are a hardworking team and won’t fold that easily guys. We should still be able to challenge New orleans for the division.

Some good points to consider

That’s why Week 1 is aberation week
Don’t take any and everything you see as a prologue to the season.
Yeah some things linger from preseason, but by week 3 or 4 they metamorph to something else.

Turner

Also, if you take a look at his game log from 2008, widely accepted as a very good season, you see these games:
42 yards on 14 carries against a stout TB defense
56 on 18 against a stout CAR defense
54 on 25 against good CHI defense
58 on 17 against good PHI defense

The Steelers game just fits the pattern that if Turner goes against a really good front 7, he’s not going to do well. My theory is that he has to build a head of steam to be very effective. He’s not good at making something out of nothing, or slipping tackles in the backfield to turn a loss into a gain. That’s just not his game. So this game is not an aberration, for better or worse.

He’ll be better next week against the Cardinals.

Rec'd, and FWIW

Turner’s an example of the rule, not the exception – everybody does worse against better opposition (pretty obvious). Yes, he’ll do better, but the Cards quietly have been pretty effective stopping the Run the last 2 years.

I don't disagree with this

You’re right he doesn’t make much out of a busted play and if ever…rarely.

But Turner is still good for what he is…very good, he follows blocks wells IMO (you may disagree) and makes the most out of what he can though he could do better.
Not speedy and quick but powerful and at times nifty enough to make a big play and break tackles.

Against good defenses I learned not to start him in fantasies in 2008.
He should do much better in week 2 and week 3 especially.

I believe Matty will realize he can’t stare down a guy for five seconds with the NFL’s best safety roaming in zone (that was zone, wasn’t it?). Remember, it took Peyton Manning NINE seasons before he won a Super Bowl. This stuff doesn’t happen overnight unless you catch lightning in a bottle. Peyton wasn’t all that great either until he got the personnel and the coaching that is needed to win the whole thing. I do think we have a fine coaching staff here that can lead the Birds to the promised land eventually. I must be the most patient fan there is. Since 1977. And, I’ll continue to be that way.

That’s what’s been hyping what we though this team was and not letting us focus on the true progress of the team.

every game is a superbowl

I guess they spend the days and hours spreading the hype about how our teams is going to stomp the Steelers to their friends and foes, and now the Falcons lose (any) game especially one they expect to win because of a “Third String” Quarterback (Big Ben was a backup QB too), and just because he’s Third String doesn’t mean he have to be. There are a lot of hidden treasures out there never used. The Steelers are actually in my opinion the or one of the best QB tandem in the league, they know what they are doing.
But now our fans look like damn fools. We Atlantians don’t know what we are talking about like always. And that’s embrassing and unacceptable to their manhood.
Go Falcons, and take the Braves, Hawks, Dawgs, Jackets, GSU Panthers/Eagles with you too!

If the first 2 games of the season

had been reversed, and we had defeated the Cardinals before losing to the Steelers, would we be as upset? Agreed, this was a huge let-down after an entire off-season of building expectations, but it is only one game against a potentially top-5 defense.

Of course, if we lose to the Cards, panic away!

by JASmith on Sep 16, 2010 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

Interesting Theory

It’s all about how the schedule is made.
We never know what teams are really like until a couple weeks into the season.
We are also facing three of the last four superbowl teams in the first three weeks.
Although the Cardinals don’t scare me anymore….DA could be the ex factor.
In 2007 he replaced an ineffective Charlie Frye in week 1 against the Steelers (the same guy that beat us at home 17-13 in 2006).
The next week DA starts at home, and from that point on, lights it up.
Unless DA somehow fails to finds that same spark, we could be in for a crazy shootout like he was in week 2 of the 2007 season against the Bengals.

Yet in the playoffs they made adjustments and manages to neutralize all of their offenses by playing good defense and not having turnovers, and beat all three of these teams

It can happen for us.
