Problems viewing Fox football on standard TV

I live in the metro ATL area, and have a standard definition DISH Network receiver and standard TV (which has worked fine in seasons past).  Fox has apparently changed its football broadcast protocol for 2010.  The Fox football announcers say that from now on, people should see black bars at the top & bottom of a SDTV setup, if I understand correctly.

Instead, I have no black bars (fullscreen), and the left & right sides of the image are cropped.  Consequently, I'm missing little things like, oh, ONE TEAM'S SCORE at the far left of the screen!

I don't know if this is an issue with 1) the ATL Fox affiliate, 2) DISH Network, or 3) where I finally have to get with the 21st Century and get myself a HDTV setup.

I can't seem to find any authoritative, final word on the Internet.  Before I start making calls to Fox ATL and DISH Network (and get possibly slanted or inaccurate info), I would appreciate any enlightenment that my fellow Falcoholics might be able to offer.

There must be plenty of other people out there with the same problem I have!  Your learned thoughts will edumacate not only me, but many of your fellow Falcons fans as well.  Thanks, and here's to good Falcons viewing in 2010.  Cheers!

The black bars indicate they're broadcasting in widescreen

However, something about the broadcast you’re receiving isn’t getting the memo that the signal is in widescreen, and therefore is sending it to your TV as normal screen, hence why you’re losing part of the image.

The black bars are because normally the widescreen is crammed onto your small screen by making the wider (normal on a widescreen) edges the edge of your standard TV, which causes a slightly smashed look (on a widescreen, this is normal because the picture is more rectangular than square like a standard TV, whereas the black bars account for the smashed widescreen look on a standard TV)

Normally, your standard TV should be getting the reception in “wide” screen, but since your TV isn’t wide, the broadcast has to be flattened a bit to keep the resolution normal so that a rectangle fits into a square.

However, I’m no TV genius, so I can’t offer a solution other than calling your company and asking what’s up. To my knowledge, the TV or receiver one should automatically adjust it so that the black bars are there so you can see everything.

Hope I provided a sliver of insight for your problem!

mine isnt cheap but

Fox has broadcast issue in general for SD broadcasts. I cant even watch in SD becuase the image sucks outload and it is hazy and sno filled. HD is a lot better but still doesnt compare to the ESPN HD broadcast.

If you are in Metro Atlanta

I’d recommend getting an HD set set of rabbit ears (get one that is amplified (plugs into the wall)). You wont have that problem and if you have a HD TV you will be shocked at the TV quality. Over the air HD > quality than Dish or Direct TV quality HD.

You're a football fan, right?

It’s time you made the jump to HDTV, my good friend. Vizio has a cheap 32 and 37inch entry models that sport “full HD.” I don’t think Dish’s HD receivers are that expensive either.

You have opinions. We all do. Some of yours may have to do with the Falcons. Sign up today and share them.

Bought a Vizio

Good bang for the buck, all right. Found a 32" with 1080p/120Hz online for $499 w/free delivery, no sales tax.

Dish Network hardware install is costing me $15 total. You can get 140+ HD channels free, if you sign up for paperless billing and a 24 month commitment.

this is a provider problem, here’s a link:

Not that I have a suspicious nature or anything, but I wonder if DISH Network might be trying to “encourage” subscribers to transition to the (more expensive) HDTV packages here.

We’ll all eventually transition to HDTV, it IS the new standard. Owners of older TVs shouldn’t have to put up with this needless crap in the meantime, though.

I think

It does show the black bars on standard Def for Comcast Digital cable (but I’m not sure)
Problem is, I’m using my DVR and I can’t seem to find a way to recored Digital Cable channels
When I turn it on, it switches to the 13 Analog Channels that doesn’t show the HD view.
So what the heck am I suppose to do?

The HD receiver for Dish works fine on an SD TV.

On my old tube set in the bedroom, I get my choice of standard def or high def. If I choose the high def channel, it displays in letterbox.

I HATE that HD is not comatible with the old NTSC tv receivers. One of the big points of pride with the American broadcast standard was that it was compatible with the old televisions from the 1950’s.

It disappoints me, my brother, but you should upgrade your service and/or your television. You’ll be amazed. I pointed out how clear the people in the stands are to my wife, and she wanted to know why I was watching the people in the stands. I had no response.

Watching the Falcons in glorious HD this year WOULD be sweet...

Good to know about the Dish HD receivers displaying properly in letterbox on tube TVs, thanks for the info.

I’ve only got space for about a 32" HDTV, so I won’t have to spend a fortune for 1080p/120Hz. Dish Network will probably upgrade my dish & receivers pretty cheaply, perhaps free. Maybe it’s time to swallow hard, and take the plunge. Football is indeed awesome to watch in HD.

Is it OK to buy myself a Christmas present in August, Santa? I’ve been good!

Yes, yes it is.

True randomness might get you calling a Hail Mary play on first-and-goal from the two yard line. You might catch the defense off guard with that, but your likelihood of scoring would be much less than if you called the utterly predictable halfback dive. - TSK

One other thing to take into consideration:

The difference between the 4:3 of SD and the 19:9 of HD aspect ratios. The long-and-the-short is, old TV shows and some commercials are still in 4:3. This means, if you go from a 27" tube to a 27" HD, the viewing area will be smaller for the old SD programming. Check http://www.kenrockwell.com/hdtv/aspect-ratio.htm for a quick description.

If you go by the same diagonal measurement, your SD viewing will be much smaller on te big screen. To replace my 27" SD, I needed 35" HD for an SD picture the same size. Somewhere on the ’Net is a conversion chart.

Time to make the leap!

Interesting link, thanks. I’m so looking forward to the HDTV learning curve! HD ain’t going anywhere, might as well learn to live with it (warts and all).

My new TV arrives today, Dish Network upgrades my hardware next week- just in time for the regular season. There’s nothing I enjoy watching on TV more than Falcons games. Hopefully, that will outweigh any negatives while I get up to speed over the next few months.
