Pre-Season? Don't talk about ... you kidding me?! Pre-Season?! I just want to start the season
Jim Mora allusions aside, J Adams posted a very interesting interview today. Normally I'd just fanpost something like this, but I think a lot of what Smitty had to say warrants consideration.
Here are some of the juicier tidbits:
In terms of our preparation, it’s more about us than it is about them
I know some people are asking why haven’t we brought another wide receiver in because WR Kerry Meier was injured, by League rule you can’t put Kerry Meier on injured reserve. Rookies can’t go on injured reserve until you go through the cut down to the 53-man roster, so that’s why we haven’t made that move ... but right now until we get to our 53-man roster, Kerry has to stay on our roster. We can’t put him on IR.
I’m anxious to get the regular season here as quick as possible. That way you really get into your game planning and the thing we’re doing right now more than anything, is evaluating our personnel because we’re going to have a lot of decisions to make in terms of our 53-man roster. Really, that’s been my focus over the last two weeks.
There’s a lot of things that we’re not going to show until the regular season.
By this point, you're probably thinking, but what does it all mean Franky?! Show us the light already! Well, to be honest, I'm not sure what it means, but I'm inclined to think that one or more of the following is true:
(a) we shouldn't really be too concerned about last week's loss - even Smitty admits their principal concerns are (1) getting down to 53 guys and (2) installing a day-to-day regimen
(b) the front office isn't just resting on their laurels re: signing another receiver
(c) Smitty likes being the underdog - he's the kind of person that will ignore the critics and then just ninja-chop the crap out of his opponent like Jean Claude Van Damme in "Bloodsport"
What do y'all think?

Yeah, this is what we should be hearing
but all the same it’s reassuring just to hear it. A lot of people think we should be playing to win…but really the preseason is just an elaborate practice for the purposes of player evaluation and situational preparation. The score is just there to satiate the teams’ (and fans’) competitive drives.
Yes it took me a long time to realize that about preseason
The other day I heard people asking if we won or not.
And before I could watch the Pats Falcons game, the Marta Bus Driver opened his window and asked a passing motorist (who probably was coming from the game) about the game around 10pm when it’s only 2 hours old, and he said “A Blowout?” People were already leaving.
If we lose a preaseason game we ain’t that great or something.
So many people don’t really care about the inside story, it’s if we won or loss.
When we are ignorant we think preaseason even when it doesn’t count, we should win them.
But around 2006 or 2007 is when I learned it’s not about winning, but it would be nice, it’s about evaluating talent against other teams in live play in front of us the audience, and to get their feet wet with conditioning.

Thanks Franky
I had already cut and pasted at least half of the quotes here, you kept me from having to make a fanpost.
I am beginning to think
A lot of what Smitty and Co. are showing in the preseason in depth charts and such are games he’s learned from the Comrade and Billicheck.
I'm still concerned about whiffs and misses.
Yes, this is a time for looking to see who’s working within the scheme and who’s freelancing. It’s a game of spacing on both sides of the ball, so everyone needs to be on-point. My biggest concern is that against the Pats, tackling wasn’t that good.
Thanks for the post, Mr. FranyWren.
How many more days, Lord, must I walk through the wilderness?
and
I still think that players still try to not go all out in pre season to avoid being injured. Another reason to shorten pre season. Besides the fact that season ticket holders get raped paying full price for pre season games.

Buck Belue
He was the QB for the 1980 UGA Nat’l Champ team.
He’s now a sports radio host on the Buck n’ Kincade show. Or….he was, I think that show has changed recently.
Since I live in NC, I don’t get to listen to him anymore. He used to be on the Buck n’ Kincade Show. I think it might just be him on the show now, though. I don’t remember.
"Ryan, under center. Single receiver set, to either side. Ryan, gonna throw. First professional pass.....CAUGHT!! Jenkins! 30! 25! 20! 15! 10! 5! He lives in Atlanta!!!" -Wes Durham
yeah
He was great, right? Handing the ball off to Herschel. tossing the ball to Herschel, screen pass to Herschel, short pass over the middle to Herschel… He wasnt much of a QB, his timeing for going to UGA was perfect though. I will give him cerdit for that.

Psh, you best believe he's the luckiest man alive.
Some people will argue that Herschel was the greatest player to ever play college ball. It’s a shame that was before I was born. Haha. Would’ve been neat to see.

Ol’ Rexy’s a pretty polarizing character.
My fear: if he ever wins “The Big One,” all of New York City will become even more insufferable, emulating Boston.

Another rant from a spazzz!
I’m watching Colts/Packers and Rams/Pats…. WTF? These guys throw the freaking ball. Bradford already has 2 tds on a crappy NE secondary. If we don’t throw a TD pass tomorrow I’m going down to the arthur blank foundation, strip naked, lay down in the driveway and protest.

I hate to agree with you here, but you're right.
If Sam Freakin’ Bradford can toss a couple of TDs for the Rams, of all teams, AND against the Pats that ate us, then why in the blippity bleep bleep can’t we?
I suppose, though, that this game had the starters in longer. That Brady to Moss pass was sweet, too. Maybe defenses play more lax to avoid injury….or something. Now I’m just trying to justify that we got outdone by the Rams. :( This isn’t good, gentlemen.

Just throwing this out there
Since its the last preseason game, and after reading some posts about 3-4 defense. Why not give it a try. DL use Jerry,Peters,Biermann and move JA55 to OLB/DE to go with Spoon at OLB with Lofton and Wire or Nicholas in the middle. Just a thought and as you can Tell I am not a fan of Jamal Anderson didn’t like the pick in the first place.
JA98 is too heavy to play OLB in a 3-4.
No pass rush skills off the edge either.

Its just a thought
I got the Idea watchin old tapes of the Late 80’s early 90’s NY Giants 3-4 defense and from what I remember from back then they had no pure NT and rotated DT’s so I dont see what not given it a try after all its what the preseason is for figuring out what defensive packages work with no real loss if it fails.
You're right. Jim Burt was only this big.
I had forgotten #69 until your post.
How many more days, Lord, must I walk through the wilderness?
I don't think there's any need to do that
after 3 years of work I think our defensive line is a strength on defense, as much if not more so than our linebackers. Changing to a 3-4 won’t bolster the secondary, which has been the most problematic. Of course, they should improve once Robinson comes back…
Well that's why we

Speed and youth?
Hmm,… not so much if you play JA55, JA98 and Mike Peterson. Not a lot of youth there with John and Mike, and the speed is definately lacking.
If the Falcons can’t get to the QB with blitz packages why would they have a better chance in a 3-4?
