The Atlanta Falcons Training Camp Open Thread, Day One
Get pumped, Falcoholics!
Football is finally here in a meaningful way. No longer must you pretend to enjoy the company of your loved ones, or teach your children how to throw a baseball, or any of that useless crap. No, you can pretty much just sink into your sofa, eat a bunch of chips and chug beer from now until February.
I'm sure your families will thank me for this announcement.
Either way, we're finally here. Everyone's reported and we should begin to see some of our positional battles work themselves out. Use this as an all-purpose open thread for the day, and if I can grab some time during my work day, I'll update this with important alerts.
Enjoy!

I would feel worse if I'd just logged on here. I've been on here for an hour. :P
I was thinking of (not seriously) yelling at Dave on here because my special teams post is so old, it has grandchildren now.
All in good fun, of course.
"Ryan, under center. Single receiver set, to either side. Ryan, gonna throw. First professional pass.....CAUGHT!! Jenkins! 30! 25! 20! 15! 10! 5! He lives in Atlanta!!!" -Wes Durham
I'm thinking we should update that before we run it

Alright, when I get a few free moments today, I'll do that.
But for now, errands must be done. Hooray!

CB battle!
That’s what I’m very interested in. I like Grimes oppisate Robinson. Update us on that! Go falcons!

Speaking of CBs
Ex-falcon foxworth is out for season with torn acl. Bummer for him. Let’s all join hands, bow our heads and pray for our boys.

Foreshadowing?
Terrence Cody was too out of shape to practice the first day, Sergio Kindle fell down the stairs because of his sleep disorder, and now Foxworth had the ACL injury.
sounds like the ravens
are having our 09 season a year later.

You do have to wonder
If all the biometric-witchdoctor muscle balancing that the Falcon trainers are into actually prevents quite a few injuries. It seems like everyone who leaves for another team in free agency tears their ACL within a year (Foxworth, Boley).

Also, if anyone gets a chance, I'd love to hear about the rookie WRs.
Any one of the three could be awesome for us. I can’t wait to see if Harvey was a one-trick pony or not.

According to @AJCFalcons
Which is, of course, DOL, there’s a number of interesting tidbits from the early practices.
1) Brent Grimes is lining up with the first defense. Based on his interception numbers, he’s likely to get a very real chance to start.
2) Colin Peek had one nice catch. HE’S THE NEW GONZO!
3) Harry Douglas is still a bit limited. More opportunities for the rookies to shine for now, I suppose.
4) I love training camp.

Camp observations from morning
Robinson looked amazing— broke up a few passes on some diving swats and caused an Eric Coleman pick in 7 on 7
Harvey is tall… Caught the ball well
Matt Ryan was excellent on check downs but threw a couple ints.. One went to mike Peterson!!

Thanks for the scouting report
I have to admit, if any of the rookie receivers are going to make the team, I’d expect it to be Harvey.

Mr. Grimes on first D squad?! I love it! As for Ryan throwing ints, hey listen that’s the point of training camp. Better we get these issues worked out now than week 5! Any word W.Moore?

Hey guy
i have a question about the Dome. Do the Falcons always use the same sideline when at home or does it change?
it's the side below the Falcons Emblem
That were most teams station themselves at home…on the bottom of our TV view Screen.
However teams like the Cowboys I think do it the other way.
Just like in Baseball Most teams dugout is on the 1st base side, but some like the Cubs is on the third base, and I think in Basketball most teams station at home on the Right side of the court.

HEY Erihury
I’m going to the cards game, I’m in sec 349 row 2. not sure about seat haven’t gotten tix yet. Home side is like sections 130-140, 240-250, 340-350. There are 2 more tix available by me if your looking to buy some. If you do look around for tix, remember , the secret to seeing a good game at the dome is to get LOW ROW number on your tix, closer you are to front of your section the better to see the game, then it doesn’t matter if your at the 20, 40 , or 50 yard line and doesn’t matter if your in the 200’s or 300’s, because the view is not that much better, unless your really really close. The dome seating is practically straight up so the 3rd tier is just as close as the second, just higher up, same distance from the field almost. Atleast that is my experience going to games there. If I sit in the first 4 rows, I can see everything, if your like row 12, 16, 20, etc.. it just gets to be a lot of folks between you and a good view- know what I mean?

Moore
He is working with the second team for now…nothing too special from where I could see… I actually think Coleman looked pretty solid, but they didn’t wear pads this morning so take it all with a grain of salt
Did anyone read this?
i dont know how’d i’d feel about this.. “1. San Diego trades defensive end/linebacker Shawne Merriman to Atlanta for inside linebacker Stephen Nicholas and a third-round pick in 2011. If Merriman re-signs with the Falcons, then the pick becomes a second-rounder.” http://bit.ly/cTurLV
merely speculation...
and very unlikely speculation at that.
I’m kind of disappointed… Michael Lombardi is normally on top of his stuff… or perhaps it is only the direct Falcons fanbase that seems to think Nicholas is going to stay where he is at. Also, the Falcons have spent the last 2 years expelling all our problematic players, why would we waste a perfectly good pick on one?
know what you believe in and why you believe in it
Not worth it
Merriman’s a headcase who has done poorly for two straight seasons. Nicholas and a third? That’s a lot to give up.

thats what i was thinking
one of those trades that just looks tempting on paper..but if he would get back to his old self and get rid of the bad attitude..that would be a scary linebacker core.
You mean give us a second round pick right?
I’d take him off they’re hands for that as long as he showed up with a beer helmet full of roids and some rocket boots on.

probably won't happen, but...
i wouldn’t mind seeing a deal similar to this get pulled off. it’s not that I think getting another DE is a “must” right now, but you gotta admit, it would make you feel even better about this team if we could get a guy we know is a solid DE. that seems to be the one position that is more of a question mark than any other. would be nice to see that question mark go away.

does anyone else find it funny...
To see these pictures of guys having to show up at a receptionist desk and sign a piece of paper? NFL camp, at least according to these pics, doesn’t seem to be that much different than a children’s summer camp. Sign-in sheets, guys walking up with sleeping bags, etc.
Also, does Matt Ryan feel kind of funny having to sign the attendance sheet? “Hey guys, it’s me… Matt Ryan. The guy who you’re paying tens of millions of dollars to be the face of your franchise, remember? I’ll prove it by signing this piece of paper.”

Dominique Foxworth is already out for the year with an ACL tear
Wow, that really sucks for Baltimore. Their secondary is already depleted with Ed Reed and a couple of other guys having problems.
Of course it does make that game against Baltimore later in the year look a little less menacing. But you hate to see a guy go down not 4 hours into training camp.
by cheshire falcon on Jul 30, 2010 4:51 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah, their secondary looks awful
The rest of their team is a juggernaut, so time will tell if they can overcome that.

i really hope we can improve on D
im so tired of the D giving up so many 3 and longs it was so depressing last year watching that
Jerious Norwood is looking good.
He’s running like lightning as of now. Not sure that will be the same when he takes his first hit of the season
Bummer...
Read on AJC that Colin Peek left with a knee injury…Any details? I was pulling for the guy.
don't pull too hard
or you’ll hurt his knee even more

Update from AJC...
The Falcons are not certain about the extent of Peek’s injury and are calling him day-to-day at this point.
Afternoon practice....
Meier got a ton of looks in 7 on 7 and caught all of them, but Harvey looked slow and lazy running routes…
Peterson had another pick and is flying around out there…
Weatherspoon got some reps with the first team, but mostly just covered the check downs
Ovie caught the ball well…had a nice grab for a touchdown
Bergeron looked GREAT this afternoon
Linemen were too far away to see, but Baker’s beard is tough to miss
Can we please play some football?
It’s been a long and lonely off season… and confession: I miss J Michael at the Falcons’ website something fierce. It has to be the most boring webspace in the NFL… nobody writes anything now.
Thanks for being here… even if my wife doesn’t appreciate it. (you know what I mean.)

about the difference between a GM and President
Maybe you guys can answer it here.
I belong to NO ONE...and no one belongs to ME.
by brotherbrown on Jul 31, 2010 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions
I'm not 100% certain on this -
I believe the GM handles business matters directly related to the team, such as player and coach hirings and salaries, organizing team transportation and practices and how all of these interract with the other parts of the organization. The president handles all the rest of the organization, such facility operations, administrative duties (processing payroll, insurance, etc…), bank accounts, and paying outside groups that affect the team (catering, trasportation, medical care, etc…). There is a great deal of crossover, I assume, as many teams (such as pre-TD Falcons) that have one person doing both, and I’m sure Rich McKay wasn’t the first person that moved from GM to president or vice-versa.
Just guessing.
Sounds like it worked out for McKay
and he kept the higher position.
But GM sounds fun, it a hard working way.

Camp Withdrawal
I have religiously gone to the last 3 summers of open camp, but between being on a trial calendar AND coaching my son’s team for the first time… I do not see much camp action in my future.
Seeing Norwood outrun Thought itself, and seeing Lofton deliver hits that scramble DNA strands is the highlight of my summer, dagnabbit. Plus, I’ll admit it… I miss Stats.
Too busy to go to camp I are very sad...
Any more updates on Harry Douglas? Is he practicing with the first team yet or no?
