Not to burn any bridges ...
But did any of y'all see D-Led's interview re: the Falcons on EPSN?
I hate to say it, but despite his best efforts, he still doesn't come off as the most knowledgeable beat writer in history.
I mean, he took the completely generic route during his interview, playing up Matty's need to "take the next step," Abe's need "to return to form," and Turner's "new/improved" approach. The man has clearly never heard of pass rushing efficiency.
Thoughts?

I've never been a D. Led fan...
I didn’t see the interview, but I can imagine your description is spot on. I think they should give his job to one of the Falcoholic writers or D3 from the AJC Birdcage blog. They would do a much better job.
I recently had a comment fight with him when he belittled soccer and soccer players on his blog. He’s pretty much a tool.

I like to blow up bridges
His name keeps making me think it’s Bedwetter.
He seems too geeky and a joke to me to be honest.
I belong to NO ONE...and no one belongs to ME.
I'm going to come to DOL's defense
I don’t think he’s an exceptional beat writer, but he’s a plenty capable one. He’s not writing his articles for the hardcore Falcon fan, he’s writing for the much more common casual one. While we may really get into questions of value and statistical analysis at times, your casual fan would much rather just hear about how the team is on its way up, what the coaches have to say, some basic stats, etc.
I think it’s more a function of his job than anything else. I’ve always found him to be a friendly, accessible guy.

I respect your point...
but I disagree. I feel like he barely even tries. I mean seriously, is that his full time job? Given his access to the team, I would think he could come up with some more original material. On top of that complaint, his articles are full of errors – I’m pretty sure he doesn’t proofread (maybe that’s the paper’s fault, but it seems unprofessional). I’m not trying to be mean, I just think our major paper could do much better.
I know you don’t have a mean bone in your body Dave, and I appreciate that about you.

Well, I'm not disagreeing with that
I’m saying that I believe he’s decent enough, and there are some truly reprehensible beat writers out there. I’d much rather have DOL than a lot of them. I’ll also certainly acknowledge there are beat writers who go way, way above and beyond what he does.
The access question is an interesting one. The Falcons as an organization have been very good to our little corner of the Internet, but it’s not like Mike Smith and Thomas Dimitroff are burning up my phone lines. I wonder just how much access DOL has.
And I do have a mean bone in my body. It’s my ulna.

So what you are saying is...
He’s doing the same job we are roughly doing on the Falcoholic. Only that he’s getting paid and more publicity?

good for you
no sarcasim intended.

As for the proofreading
that is an issue for the whole AJC. Grab a paper and look through it one day. They need to hire new editors…
um
they still publish a newspaper??? what is this world coming to.

I have to disagree as well ...
Look at Dave O’Brien (beat writer for the Braves). He doesn’t get waaaaaaay into sabermetrics or anything, but his access is very evident in his writing. The superficial approach that D Led takes is not mandated by AJC, it’s just how he does things. My question is, very simply, why?
In my estimation (and I’m basing this entirely on what’s he’s written), D Led doesn’t have similar access to the Falcons. He’s either incredibly tight-lipped (doesn’t seem likely), or he just doesn’t have much access to what goes on in the front office/locker room.
He just comes off as a prime example of a less-than-qualified beat writer who lucked into a position he probably won’t hold onto for very long. That may seem harsh, but you know how I roll at this point.
I'll agree Steve Wyche was better

I love Wyche
he does great stories on the Falcons for NFL.com from time to time. He actually had us ranked #7 in his preseason rankings…
Isn't that why we come to the Falcoholic?
I agree with Dave…the AJC has to appeal to its drone-like, zombie consumption model. All jokes aside, it serves a purpose. Not everyone cares enough to know what DVOA is, or why the Run-n-shoot went the way of the dinosaur. SBnation serves that purpose. AJC serves its purpose. Love, butterflies and double rainbows ensue.

I agree
Take the NFL draft as an example. A guy like Mel Kiper is a really, really good analyst. Put some people really don’t like him because he’s hardcore/serious about it and goes into very specific detail. That being said, I sill do say D-Led is mediocre. His articles seem to lack… passion. He doesn’t seem to be super into what he does.

I don't think
People dislike Mel Kiper because he’s serious
It’s moreso that like others People think he knows it all and is proven wrong on some occasions and we are eager to feed into the times he’s wrong.
But to dislike BedLet for the reason stated above. I have NO problem with that.
I belong to NO ONE...and no one belongs to ME.
kiper
is a bedwetter and a name dropper. he gets a thought stuck in his head and cant get past it sometimes. escpecially on draft day.

The newspaper business just isn't what it used to be
DOL is part of the AJC’s half-hearted attempt at “new media”. Its nothing special but its not all his fault. I agree that his reporting is mediocre and his writing style is just a little bit too casual but I bet the AJC isn’t flying him all over country like they used to do for reporters. And those guys don’t pay beans. He probably isn’t even full-time. O’Brien does a better job with the Braves but he’s younger and is more of a natural blogger than Ledbetter. Considering theres 10 times as many games to cover, I bet he’saround the team a lot more too
Seriously, Dave’s readership is growing and one of these days we’ll lose him to someone who pays just a bit better than I imagine Comcast does. Don’t settle for the AJC though Dave. That outfit is an embarrassment to the city of Atlanta.
I hope that wherever I go, I never have to give this place up
I genuinely enjoy doing it, my habit of disappearing for days at a time notwithstanding.

I understand both sides
Most people that post here are true fans, who know so much about everything affiliated with the Falcons. I get a little ticked off when I hear the same story about Atlanta over and over and over again throughout various sources on paper, television, and the web. What gets me is that it’s their job to cover the NFL. They have more opportunities and chances to pursue better and more useful information than me. Some get to interview players, go to the training camps and get the inside scoop. When it seems like I know more about the Falcons than they do, it doesn’t make sense. But on the other hand, we as die hard fans need to realize that most people would rather hear the basic topics about the team like Matt Ryan and Turner, rather than wonder how Stephen Nicholas’ child is doing or if there’s a training camp bet between Dunta and Roddy and the loser has to cut off his dreads.

That Stephen Nicholas story made me cry.
And I’ll gladly admit to that. I hope he has a great career here in Atlanta.
I don't live close enough to atlanta to see his articles but i have seen a few of his online articles
They are far from great but the few times I have seen him on NFL Network he seemed pretty knowledgeable, I think whoever said it earlier was right, he just dumbs down his writing for the casual fans..
P.S, If the President doesn’t have to proofread why should a beat writer? lol
I didn't see the interview
but if he did indeed stick to the generic bulletpoints, that’s pretty disappointing. A spot on ESPN is an opportunity to really rep for the Falcons and let people who don’t follow the team understand what we’ve got going for us. When the average person hears “Matt Ryan is coming into his own, Turner is back in shape, so and so is back from an injury,” it means nothing to them. If you haven’t watched the Falcons closely, you probably don’t understand the attributes that give Ryan a much higher ceiling than the average QB. Turner’s 2008 numbers are just that, a set of numbers, if you haven’t spent time watching for yourself just how disruptive he can be to a defense when he’s at his peak. Nobody knows or cares about any of our players beyond three or four big names. We have a longstanding reputation as a crappy team; no one thinks our playoff appearance in 2008 signifies anything, and while we celebrated our long-overdue back-to-backs like we won the Superbowl, everyone else cocked an eyebrow and spent five seconds feeling vaguely impressed by the fact that Atlanta might not be a complete turd factory after all. All these interchangeable “Falcons on the rise” articles must seem to 95% of the football-watching population like storyline-obsessed sportswriters giving a borderline-decent team the benefit of the doubt in case they actually do break out this season and people start caring about them. And that’s probably not too inaccurate.
Being on a national stage to talk about the Falcons outside the constraints his AJC job might put on his content, I’d hope that a Falcons writer would view that as an opportunity to make a strong case for the team’s playoff viability, with some facts and stats that aren’t already common knowledge. The upside is that we’ll get to see the stupefied looks on people’s faces when the Falcons start kicking ass and no one can figure out why.
