#3 Receiving Threat??

Going into training camp, the only two true top-tier receiving targets Matty Ice has at his disposal are Roddy White and Tony-G. If you take a look at all of the other receivers on the roster, you're faced with a list of mediocre veterans and unproven youngsters.

At Wideout we have:
Michael Jenkins, Harry Douglas, Eric Weems, Kerry Meier, Ryan Wolfe, Brian Finneran

So my question for you guys is that out of all these guys on the roster, who do you guys think will step it up this season and be our Mike Wallace or our Robert Meachem?? Give me some feedback

You forgot Brandyn Harvey

….who could arguably be better than Jenkins.

Based on what I’ve read, that’s not an unreasonable statement to make in the next 2 years.

"Ryan, under center. Single receiver set, to either side. Ryan, gonna throw. First professional pass.....CAUGHT!! Jenkins! 30! 25! 20! 15! 10! 5! He lives in Atlanta!!!" -Wes Durham

I second that Brandyn Harvey Post

I believe that between him and Harry Douglass (if he is 100%) the Falcons are capable of having the top 10 receiving threat in the league. And, if they have that, with the reemergence of the running game……….. (Oh, i just got a woody just now)

Do we have any ladies here at all?

Even closeted?
In any event, our (platonic) saugage fest has been commendable to friendly male bonding.

Unless you're talking about the Panthers

Let’s not use sausage fest again. Creepay.

And yup, we have at least a few ladies. Brent Grimes’ mother is an infrequent poster, as is HEYJUDE!, who is very active during the season.

Weatherspoon1stFalconsPick???

Finn is probably gone

and Weems might not be in the WR corps. Harvey, Wolf and Meier might all three make the team. In that case Douglas or Meier might be #3. If Douglas cannot get back to pre-injury form then Harvey or Meier will be #3.

by mwalex on Jul 28, 2010 9:02 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah hate to say it

But somebody is going to be gone, but I don’t know who. Finneran has been a reliable vet for a few years, but we have a lot of new receivers that we might be inclined to keep. It’s reminding me of what the Saints did a few seasons ago getting Henderson, Meachum, Colston, and some other young guys to open it up. At least two are gonna have to be gone, but you’d like to see all three Harvey, Wolf, and Meier (since he as drafted) make it (even wish Bergeron would come to light but won’t have room for him.
Weems may be dispelled to practice squad because he would only be useful at Kick returner, but we Drafted another guy in Franks for that, so Norwood and Douglas may not have to worried about that.

hmm

that makes sense. I imagine Finneran will have to stay around for the year for vet influence on the young guys.

I think we may be setting our expectations pretty high for some of these rookies

I think either Wolfe or Harvey could be a viable player in the near future, but neither is a lock to make the team.

Personally, I think Douglas is going to cut into Jenkins’ catch totals, enough that their numbers won’t be that far apart by the end of the season.

I'm not as confident as some of you.

Roddy is the best. But after that we have issues. Ok maybe HD does something but we don’t have enough history to form any absolutes. Finn has good hands but he’s ageing. Jenks is Jenks and the rookies are too young and not top rated guys. Also weems is ok and Hes one of coaches’ “guys”. I have nothing but questions in my head about this crew. If we are going to be the team we say we have we are gonna need some magic at WR. Maybe we are better than last year a bit but elite recieving squad most likely, meh. As a team we are better so maybe that means a couple more Ws and a good shot at the playoffs but we neede anquan Boldin or a reciever of that calibre to be elite.

Weatherspoon1stFalconsPick???

by JJWatt1stfalconspick on Jul 28, 2010 12:55 PM EDT reply actions

Why would we draft a

TE when we don’t even know how the two rookie TE’s are going to work out? WR? We don’t know how our current crop is going to look yet. A #3 receiver does not have to be a “stud” receiver, as some people seem to think. A kid like Meier that has decent speed, has no problems going across the middle, excellent hands and can take a hit is perfect. Like Wes Welker (even though he is higher than #3 for NE). Harvey could easily be ATL’s #2 receiver.

DE – we have a good crop of DE’s in development but it never hurts to keep an eye open. Bigger needs exist on the OL and another LB to shore up Spoon and Lofton, unless Weston and/or Woods surprise people. RB is a good position as Norwood’s time in ATL is coming to an end.

by mwalex on Jul 28, 2010 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Brandon Harvey

I’m guessing he’s one of our undrafted free-agents I don’t know about. Seems like he has potential, I know Villanova has a really good program at the FCS level. He definitely has size (6’4, 205), which I like, but if anything I would give the advantage to Douglas or Meier to be more of an impact.

The fact that HD is coming off of a big-time injury leads me to believe that we will actually use Weems alot more in the passing game than in the return game.

Just rewatched some Wolfe and Harvey highlights

Apparently Wolfe pulled a hamstring during his pro-day on his 1st 40 yd dash (4.8ish) and ran a low 4.6 on his second.. anyone know what his times are when not injured? He looked a bit faster than that from his highlights

finn will b the 3 reciever while douglas will handle the punt returns and will play someslot with no TE but meire will pull 5th wide.empty backfield lots of weapons on ATL roster just have to get right use out of each player as well as stay healthy. will b finns last year with birds so meire will have some help this year. Like your optimism

I’m not convinced Finn’s even going to make the team, and if he does, I’d slot him as our #4 guy at best.

Does that means Franks won't make the team?

if HD is doing Punt returns.

by brotherbrown on Jul 28, 2010 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't think HD will do punt returns

After loosing him for a year I don’t think TD/MS will put HD in that position. Weems best shot at making the team will be for special teams/punt returns.

Finn, sadly, probably won’t make the team unless they keep him around as a mentor. While a great influence and locker room guy his numbers haven’t been stellar.

My guess for the WR corp – White, Jenkins, HD, Meier, Harvey, Wolf (I know Dave, to optimistic about the rookies, but what are they for other than to dump unrealistc expectations on?)

by mwalex on Jul 28, 2010 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

They Drafted Franks for a reason

And there are no talks about him playing Corner. He’s been known as a return specialist. Weems did both KR and PR and did pretty well despite not breaking one.
No reason to think if Franks does equally or better that he will take both jobs. But like Franks as a corner, Weems doesn’t seem to fit in as a receiver with the other upper echelon talent. I think Weems get Practice Squad to save HD and Norwoods injury issues to specialize as RB and WR, and Franks get KR and PR duties. I think Harvey may also be the next odd man out. He doesn’t quite impress me like Wolf did. Yeah he can make some plays, but seems to also be a return specialist. It will likely be White, Jenkins, HD, Meier, Wolf, and maybe Finn if they want six receivers including a vet. 2 or 3 TE for receiving.

I belong to NO ONE...and no one belongs to ME.

I want WEEMS!!!!!!

and harvey and wolfe on the practice squad meier is a sure thing but the others are housten but alot of potential and well keep 3 te in order of gonz, peele, and the guy from clemsons really good

New look

on offense? I’m new here; only my 2nd post. So somebody has probably already pointed this out. But it looks to me as if this administration is putting together a different kind of receiving corps for Matt Ryan. Harvey, at 6’4", Wolfe, at 6’2" and Meier, also at 6’2" are BIG. And they outweigh White and Douglas by a good bit—not Jenkins. (But they all have reputations for being sure-handed.) And I’m not thinking about Finneran who has both the size and hands but is along in years; I’m thinking about receivers number two and three. If “new look” isn’t exactly the right term, maybe “better look” is: a receiving corps that can run routes, go up and over little DBs, doesn’t drop passes, and gives Ryan consistent targets anywhere on the field on any down.

yes

I’m very interested in seeing these new receivers and how they impact the offense. About as much as Weatherspoon, Robinson, and our D-Line does on Defense.
Plus how the two O-line draft picks…are they another version of Harvey Dahl?
14 days until the first preseason game for the Falcons.

Interesting point

It is interesting to see ATL going for bigger WR’s. Wonder if one of the reasons might have been how Grimes was abused by tall WR’s last year. Also, the average DB tends to be shorter than the average WR.

What do the 40 times look like for Meier, Wolf and Harvey?

by mwalex on Jul 30, 2010 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

perhaps, now that this point has been brought out

most of these guys have been brought in as big bodies to hold as practice squadders or for camp to toughen up our half-pint defense?

There was a statement by Ryan that he was going "under" more.

With the higher percentage passes in traffic, bigger receivers make sense.

Nobody is going anywhere

As far as i’m concern harry is are number 3 receiver and eric weems isnt going any where he is going to be 1 of the best returners this year. The 1 thing i’m worried about is if harry or any other receiver that we have doesn’t step up this year, then are we going to be looking 2 draft a receiver pretty high next year maybe 2nd rd. And i just dont like picking up WR higher than 3rd round, that’s my only dilemma
