Comcast Draft Talk: Worst Falcon Rookie Of All Time

As announced previously in this space, Comcast has generously agreed to support the best NFL community around -- us!  As part of that effort, between now and the end of the 2010 NFL season Comcast will be sponsoring a variety of special editorial and interactive features on our site.

As you may have guessed, this is the companion piece to the best Falcon rookie of all time discussion.

The majority winner in that case was Matt Ryan, he of the sterling passer rating and awesome first pass. There were quite a few strong contenders to go with him, as well, but I suspect somehow that those of you who have been Falcon fans for a while will have a lot more success with this one.

Given the team's history of ineptitude through most of its 44 years, it's little surprise that we've had our share of complete busts. Some of them were clear busts in their rookies seasons. Tell me who you think those guys are, and who the worst offender of all was.

You are now free to discuss.

Comcast is a proud supporter of The Falcoholic.  You’ll get your Atlanta Falcons games as a part of over 120 NFL games Comcast provides in HD, as well as On Demand game recaps from every NFL game every week, faster Internet speeds, and stunning HD.  With Comcast and NFL RedZone, you get every touchdown from every game every Sunday afternoon!  Call 1-800-COMCAST or visit http://www.comcast.com.

Is gotta be Aundray Bruce
  1. overall draft choice and sucked way more than Anderson.

From Wikipedia:

Bruce was drafted with the first overall pick in the 1988 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.2 Although he was the first overall pick, Bruce started only 42 games in his 11-year career. Bruce enjoyed his most prominent role on the Falcons 1991 playoff team when he saw spot duty on offense as a tight end as well as defense. He signed with the Los Angeles Raiders as a free agent in 1992 and finished his career with the organization. Bruce played in 151 games over his 11-season career, posting 32 sacks and 4 interceptions. He was quite serviceable in Oakland but never lived up to the high expectations.

I would say either Aundray Bruce or Bruce Pickens

Ya Bruce was the first to come to mind but...

went back & looked at his stats- not that shabby actually, especially compared to JA98. I certainly would’ve taken 12 sacks in JA’s first 2 yrs over what we got. Don’t get me wrong, Bruce was still a bust for a #1 pick. I like the Picken’s pick; I had high hopes for that one & he was god-awful. Lookin back at our past #1’s is depressing in general, up to ‘08, with the occasional score (I didn’t mean you Steve B.) The blind squirrel & the nut thing saying comes to mind.

Yeah, everything went downhill after he signed the extension, but he was fine as a draft pick.

Bruce

Many of them over the last 40+ years. Those of us old to remember have tried to forget. No one came in with more over-blown hype, and did so little with it.

I'm surprised

Jimmy Williams’ name hasn’t been mentioned more than once. What a train wreck that guy was.

He was actually 2nd round, or he would!

Are we not forgetting....

Tony Casillas? I think a #2 overall Nosetackle? I know he went on to play w/ the Cowboys in an mediumly serviceable manner, but for the Birds he was putrid.

Oh how I love memory lane.

Nathan Davis

Nathan Davis, a DT from Indiana taken by Dan Reeves in the 2nd round in 1997. I don’t think he ever bothered to show up for training camp.

One hit wonder

Have no remembrance of the guy’s name or any other details…
It was during the rein of Nobis. A rookie lasted until the first day of hits. Had one play – head on into Nobis. Walked off the field, never to be heard from again.

Gotta be Bruce Pickens

But does anybody have the back-story on Joey Jones? #9 Overall pick, with 7 total Receptions?
