The Scale of Falconliness, Re-do Edition: Keith Brooking

Keith Brooking waving his arms unironically.

Who's the ultimate Falcon? And who's the ultimate anti-Falcon? That's what we're going to find out with our summer project: the Scale of Falconliness. We'll rate former Falcons on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most Falconly. The rule: minimum of three seasons with the Falcons for coaches, five seasons for players.

We did this one on our first podcast episode, but you guys have made it clear you want a crack at it. I'll be very brief and turn the mic your way, as I've already said my piece:

Keith Brooking, LB (1998 - 2008)

Falconly Unfalconly

  • 11 years as a Falcon -- seventh on all-time games played list.
  • Third in recorded tackles, top 15 in both sacks and picks.
  • Five Pro Bowls at three different positions.
  • Born, raised in Coweta County, Georgia. Currently lives in Atlanta. Georgia Tech's all-time leading tackler.
  • 2002 Falcons Man of the Year for his charity work.

his recent history has soured his "legacy"...

I agree with the 1st episode of the podcast in that he will be thought of more favorably in a few years. Right now he’s still a major douche.

Was going to dock another point for his recent antics…But he will always be a Falcon to me. He really was a great player on and off the field for the Falcons. Plus, I am generally biased towards players in my Falcons lifetime (i.e. 1990 and beyond)…Given the Vick fiasco, he’ll be remembered as the face of this team for most of the 00s.

Also, I dock less points than others for playing on other teams. In this day and age, it’s way too rare to play for one team (see: Brett Favre, Jerry Rice…heck, even Montana played for the Chiefs). Many of the old-school Falcons would’ve played for more teams in this day and age. Plus, he left because the team decided to move on without him.

But he could’ve shown a little more class last year…but what do you expect? He’s a GT grad! (I kid, I kid)

I dont think many would dock him points for playing for another team...

it’s just that he is being a total whiney douchebag bitch while he is playing for another team. He will always be a Falcon, and I hope he retires a Falcon, but last year he was a total whiney douchebag bitch.

Agree with you about last season!

It’s kind of sad really that he’s tarnished his image in the eyes of Falcons fans so abruptly. I kinda hope we see them again next season (but wouldn’t mind seeing the Boyz miss the playoffs)…And yes, I am assuming that we make the playoffs…

He plays for the freaking COWBOYS. That just stains people in my mind.

Also, the Wikipedia & PFR links up there both point to this page.

Something happened after he joined the Cowboys

because he was a whiney douche last season. I wanted to see Jared Allen kick his butt when he walked over to the Vikings sideline during the playoff game. He lost a lot of points with me after last season but I agree that I hope he retires a Falcon.

Wow Jason you pro/con list is certainly polarizing.

I had a boss tell me once that one “WTF” can F up a hundred “that a boys”.

Was that the play off game?

Yeah Brooking 3:16.

I dunno, lately giving up 3rd and longs has been quite Falconly.

Solid 8 to me. Yes he was a douch last year but he did that when he was with us and we loved it. Its the whole “my son can do no wrong thing but your kid is a pain in the bahooky”.

And I agree, if he could have, he would have stayed here until he retired. As far as alienating himself from the team? He was a leader on the field and in the locker room until “he who musnt be named” came along and destroyed what little chemistry the team had left after the vick fiasco. I think that is a huge part of the problem right there.

KB is the only Falcon I have ever personally met,

but I didn’t feel comfortable voting higher than a 7 – at least until he retires a Falcon…

He had some great seasons in ATL, he always played hard- but good gravy marie did he act like a horse’s ass the last couple of years, both here and in Dallas. As someone with Romo and Miles Austin on my money league fantasy team, I watched several Cowboys games, and I was embarrassed for him.

A chip on your shoulder is no reason to act like you have no class. I’m sorry.

8 for me

Keith was a beast early on in his career and it lates for several. Towards the end, not so much. He looked like Frankenstien out there more often than not with his arms out in front of him slow running towards the ball carrier or QB. That plus the fact that when he left he chose to go to the damn Plowboys… wth…?

Even with all the douchebaggery he is still one of my favorite birds.

It’s kinda like when you brother acts like a punk but he’s still in the family. I was really sad to see him go and my guess is so was he and that’s why he acted like a beeotch when he played us. He’s just an emotional guy and that’s what we loved about the guy but unfortunatly it’s also what you hate at times. He’s a 10.

Rule #1: Double tap.

by Ball Hawk on Jul 21, 2010 10:57 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Let's not forget

That the Falcons offered him a contract, but it wasn’t enough money for him. We wouldn’t guarantee him a starting spot (especially considering how badly he played) and wanted to work in more young talent (Steven Nichols), but he wouldn’t have it.
I count that as greed and hubris, when he could have (in very Falconly fashion) played another few years and gracefully retired as one of the Falcon greats (overlooking everything else). Since he didn’t, it’s harder to put on the rose-colored glasses about his tenure here.

C’mon guys I was never a Brooking kool-aid drinker but he deserves at least an 8 if not a 9. He was Georgia raised and he played 11 solid seasons for the Falcons.

well I gave my 8 mainly

because he went to the uber douchey Plowboys who I will hate until beyond the grave… Otherwise it would be a solid 9+

I give him 4

For flapping his arms like a 10 year old retard in the Cowboys game.
All the good (in Falconliess) was washed away with that one stupid, classless gesture.
Good luck in getting into that Cowboys ring of honor Keith.
The door into the Falcons one is now closed!
