Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Michael jenkins and stupid calculations

So i am sick and cant sleep so i am here. I have been thinking of something to do with michael jenkins to put him in a better light. so here we go. I looked at the list of top wide receivers and yardage. What i figured is that there are 32 teams, this means obviously that there are 32 number one receivers. meaning that between 33 and 64 are the top secondary receivers. I subtracted the rb's and TE's and what i got was michael jenkins clocked in at number 46 with  635 yards. this means that he is the 13th best number two receiver. Lets keep this in mind that we are a run heavy offense, that also has the greatest receiving TE to take receptions away from him. another thing that popped out at me is that he only had 50 catches. there were some below him and some above him that had more catches. which means that if he had a few more thrown his way he mightve been better off. Its not that he dropped a lot either as orange already proved through one of  his earlier posts. lastly his average yards per catch wasn't too bad for where he landed on the list. The two dissapointing things were his touchdowns and yards per game. JUMP

Star-divide

in conclusion, he is in the top half for number two receivers. he could use a few more looks to get his stats up. and he averages slightle better yards per catch for where he is at on the list. overall i don't know how imortant these numbers are, but they might make you like him a little more. Like i said, with turner, roddy white, and gonzo taking his receptions away, along with a few passes to snelling and norwood, he doesn't look too bad. His complete stats are as follows :

rec yds   avg   avg/g long   td   +20+40 1st  1st% fum

Michael Jenkins  ATL  WR  50  635  12.7  42.3  50T     1     12    1   29  58.0    0

so what do you think after this post.

A. still dont like him

B. like him a little more

C. my views were wrong he isn't bad

D. these stats are dumb, your dumb

I don't know what to think of him

There’s a lot of talk if he’s a good blocker or if he isn’t. If he drops too many passes, is he a good second receiver or not. Overall, I don’t exactly like him, but I think he does do at least a slightly better job than what people give him credit for. He is a solid second receiver, and he’s fine when we have an offense full of talent. I do think that Roddy, Michael, and Harry as a whole make up a great receiving core. Add in Tony Gonzalez, Kerry Meier, and Jerious Norwood to catch passes, and these guys will all take pressure off each other.

I think he's about average

Not terrible, and good for a big play every now and then (he has at least some permanent goodwill from me for the 2008 win against Chicago), but I don’t think he has long before we upgrade at his position. Personally I think Harry Douglas is better.

The only thing I like about him

is Matt Ryan’s first professional pass

He gets a bum rap

Jenkins is a pretty decent receiver. The whole dropped pass issue is blown out of proportion by people posting on this board. Jenkins dropped pass rate is actually pretty good but he picks bad times to drop those passes, like in the end zone.

If he tightened up his route running he would improve substantially.

my views on Jenkins are still the same

But your stats are honorably mentionable because his can help us understand it’s not all him.
I think were we get off is Jenkins is known for drops at critical times. Roddy White still drops balls too, but he makes up for it with his big plays. Jenkins in my opinion hasn’t done it much, and truly has been outshined lately by Gonzalez, White and an injuried Harry Douglass. With our improving talent, Jenkins is the scapegoat (true or not) as being the weakess link. The same is roughly true about Jerious Norwood. His injuries is why we think he’s the weakess link, by not playing and when slightly injuried is ineffective. However Norwood injury plagued years were Late 06 and most of 09. 2007 and 2008 Norwood was predominately healthly, at least he’s bound to bounce back.
As for Jenkins I think the stiffer competition with make him want to try harder, and the Falcons might use him over the new guys at first to build up trade value, and then phasing in our newer receivers.

a gift?

But in any event, most of us look at the most recent 2009 season and how it went wrong (like how my life went in 2009), and we are quick to point out weak links and how to get rid of them. Unless we see something consistently solid from Jenkins, at best he woul have been the developmental receiver for Ryan in 2008 (first pass, 5 second bears catch, Raider’s Touchdown etc)
