Did anyone see this on ESPN?
So does this mean JA98 will now come off the bench or will he just take less snaps now? Interesting and encouraging. Now if Sidbury can make the leap the same as Biermann, then we'll be okay at defensive end for years to come.
ESPN--July 15, 2010
Some teams will identify a problem from season-to-season and the player personnel folks will find a solution, either through the draft, a trade or a free agency pickup. In 2009, one of the Atlanta Falcons' deficiencies was in the pass-rushing department; however, none of those three options was deployed.
Instead, the team is going to go with what they've got, hoping that the return of Peria Jerry -- and the promotion of Kroy Biermann to an increased role -- will be good enough. But there is something else: the luck of the schedule draw could be on their side.
According to Daniel Cox of AtlantaFalcons.com, the team will face an easier set of opposing offensive lines this season compared to last. Thus, even though they didn't necessarily add anyone (although Jerry might be considered an add, because he missed the final 14 games in 2009), the pass-rush should be better than it was a season ago.

Wonder what they're basing it on...
No depth chart on http://www.atlantafalcons.com/People/Roster/Depth_Chart_Update.aspx yet.
How many more days, Lord, must I walk through the wilderness?
I guess they extrapolated it from afc.com:
“The Falcons are looking for defensive end John Abraham to return to his Pro Bowl form, as well as continued improvement from versatile end Kroy Biermann and the underrated but hyper-productive Jonathan Babineaux. The line should get a big boost with the return to the starting lineup up of 2009 first-round defensive tackle Peria Jerry, who missed the final 14 games of the season after suffering a week two knee injury.”

Hmm ...
I think we’ve pretty much known (for a while now) that Kroy would probably start. Don’t have time to track down the quotes, but this isn’t exactly a new development.
With that said, I’m thrilled.
Beer man
We really need Kroy to step up to that 8 sack range in order for us to be successful…as well as have Abe go back to around 10. Then get at least 10 from Babs and Jerry and we’ll be in pretty good shape. These aren’t outrageous expectations, they are however totally unproven and relying on unproven players scares me.
W-R-O-N-G
The only unproven of the four that you referred to is Jerry. And I’m hopeful about him.

How is Kroy "Proven"
How is an undersized DE from Montana who has 7 career sacks a proven player? I think he is gonna be a pretty solid end for us this year, but to say he is proven is ridiculous. If he is proven to be what he has been to this point, then we are in trouble. He needs to be better than he was last year, which I believe he can do, but it is no sure thing. Also, Abe has been proven in the past, but how much does he have left? Regardless of why his numbers were down, we don’t know that he is going to be back at the level he has been in the past. There is a difference between being “proven” and what we all hope ends up happening with the D line.

First of all, give this post if you really are losing sleep re: our d-line.
Judging a player solely by his sack total is like ranking pitchers based on their ERA. There are plenty of variables, not just one.
Kroy was the 10th most valuable 4-3 DE last year according to Pro Football Focus. Clearly you look at those rankings with a grain of salt, taking sample size and margin-of-error into account, but to say that he’s unproven is just false.
Carry on.
Oooook
If he’s so proven and great why wasn’t he able to beat out Jamal last year? Look I’m not saying Kroy isn’t a good player or won’t have a good 2010 season, I’m just saying we haven’t seen it happen yet. If that were the case he would have been on the field more last year. And while sacks may not be the only way to judge a DE, they are important and they do tell to how well a player is rushing the passer. He also struggles against the run at times…which is a major reason Jamal got more snaps than him. You’re making me knock on the beer man which makes me sad. I love Kroy, I’m just saying I think people are expecting some pro bowl Patrick Kerney season from him and I think that’s a bit rich. That’s all.
If he’s so proven and great why wasn’t he able to beat out Jamal last year?
He proved himself with his ‘09 campaign. Not sure what part of that isn’t clear.
And while sacks may not be the only way to judge a DE, they are important and they do tell to how well a player is rushing the passer.
No. Sacks tell you how many time the DE actually tackles the QB. It does not tell you how often the DE created pressure which affected the play.
He also struggles against the run at times…which is a major reason Jamal got more snaps than him.
Actually you’re wrong again. Check this if you do not believe me. While both JA98 and Beer Man had positive value vs the run last yr, Beer Man was more valuable
And just for the record, JA98 had 29 more reps than Kroy last yr at DE. Not saying he’s a sure fire pro bowler, but you’ve basically disregarded his entire ’09 campaign.
speaking of ESPN,
on sports nation yesterday Colin Cowherd’s “chair of knowledge” picked Atlanta to win the NFC south as long as Micheal Turner stays healthy
Beware Newyorkers, Jason Heyward has arrived, he will rob A-rod of 100 homeruns, and will bring at least 5 world series trophies to the great city of Atlanta
