Possible Complications for Roddy White
Background: Recently, Roddy White was in Virginia helping out at Michael Vick's youth football camp. After the camp, White attended a birthday party for Michael Vick at a club near Vick's hometown. During the party, there was a shooting which injured one of Vick's co defendants from his dogfighting trial. According to Vick's attorney, Vick had left the party well before the shooting occured. White apparently echoed this claim, saying he and Vick had left the party prior to the shooting.
Apparently, there is video evidence which suggests that Vick did not leave until about three minutes prior to the shooting. This puts Vick's lawyer's statements in question, and unfortunately, White's statements as well. Likely, White will be interviewed by the NFL in regards to the shooting incident. It doesn't seem likely at this time that White will suffer any legal or league consequences. However, should this turn out poorly, it will not help his or the teams image.
I hope that White is truthful in any interviews and re-evaluates his commitment to his friend, Michael Vick. While there may be no wrongdoing on either of their parts, White must be aware of any potentially damaging perceptions created by his behaviors and choices. As long as he is a professional athlete, he will be held to a higher standard.

I hope this won't turn into a string of hatred
But I thought it was interesting to promote for discussion purposes.
Roddy has never made a secret of his fondness for Vick, and I really don’t think he should have to. Is Vick’s birthday party the best place to be? No, probably not. And should he be protecting Vick if there’s something untoward? That’s a huge no.
Still, I don’t really believe in pure guilt by association. I have a feeling that aside from a PR ding if it turns out Roddy was around a while longer than he said, he’s going to come out of this smelling just fine.

NO issue here...
The only wrong doing may be a little “white” lie, with a good friends intrest… NOBODY on this website can say they don’t have a small soft spot for Vick, I’d like to see him succeed…but looking very foward to demolishing the Eagles on their homefield this season
I don't have a soft spot for Vick...
You tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is 'never try'...
Easy to say now...
I’m pretty sure you’ve had more than one Vick jersey… likley even a FREE MIKE VICK t-shirt.
We’ve all moved on to bigger an better things
I have never liked Vick
from the day he was drafted to the day he left the team. Grossly over rated and over paid. I never have nor will ever have a soft spot for Vick.
I didn’t like us drafting Vick at first. But watching him play and lead the team I was swayed. Then came the charges and the lies. He fell out of my favor at that point. While everyone deserves a second chance, that doesn’t mean you can take your eye off them, and completely trust them.
I had a vick jersey, but have not worn it or had it in my closet since the incident. He should have served his entire sentence in prison, and only then have a chance at being reinstated.
He was supposed to be hope for a lot of young children, but all he ended up being was a bad influence. There are hundreds of other people, in sports and everywhere else who are 1000 times better at being a role model. I was disgusted by Atlanta fans at the dome who cheered him after he scored that touchdown last year. I turned the game off at that point. I despise the eagles, and vick now. And anyone on our team should stay out of contact with him from now on, as it will only lead to trouble, proven by this incident.

VIck was the best thing that EVER happened for this team
First mikes huge play making ability gained the ATL a HUGE fanbase. he dazzled every one who wasn’t a falcons fan and helped really market this team. he sold Tons of jerseys, tickets merch ect,( although he saw he fair share on money too)
Second, He went to prison.
And got us Mat ryan, the only QB IN FRANCHISE HISTORY to have back to back winning seasons, rookie of the year and our beloved franchise QB. if vick never leaves maybe Petrino is still our coach and were going 8-8 or 9-7 or 7-9 or worse. it was a blessing in disguise.
3rd because vick was never on petrino’s team and all the Negitive media he got there concerning vick he bolted. which led to MIKE SMITH being hired. Face it if vick is still here were the same team hat can be great or horrible we are so much better off now.

You have an interesting point
If not for Vick, would the Falcons have the national visibility they do now? Frankly, the Vick years and the Hindenburg-esque Petrino era served to catapult the team to the national conversation….followed by us becoming a legitimately good team. Would we receive our due (not that we really do to any great extent) if not for that?

No
We wouldn’t, and that’s the truth. Vick gave us some good years. He screwed up royally in his actions, and this is press he does not need. He deserves every bit of blame for the way he dragged the franchise that had given him a lot through the mud. He took responsibility for that, and he and the Falcons parted ways. If anything, Arthur Blank learned that he can’t do it on his own, and he realized that we needed a change in the organization’s infrastructure. I’m not thanking Vick for putting the Falcons in the position he did, but we responded admirably by making smart front office and personnel decisions. The credit goes to Mike Smith, TD, and the rest of the guys who came in and busted their butt.
This is a non-issue for the Falcons. Period.

Well said
A voice of reason and not blind fandom. We have all moved on, thanks for the memories(i.e. the 1st ever Playoff Win at Lambeau!), see you in Philly, we will have our REVENGE!
Agree
What Vick did transcends football. Many Falcon fans felt betrayed and angry with Vick for “doing this to the team.” But really, think of what he did to himself. Think of where he was prior to his dog issues and where he is now.
Yes, our team suffered, but he was a good Falcon on the field (save a finger extended here and there). He did put the Falcons on the map and he did win. While I think ultimately, the Falcons are better off without Vick. We certainly wouldn’t be where we are without him being on our team to begin with….
This should be more about supporting a human being in changing his life around. Not only did Vick lose most of his earnings, he lost respect of a majority of individuals, football fans and non-football fans alike. He didn’t just get a slap on the wrist, either. He went to jail…For a while.
I don’t like bringing religion onto these sites, but I feel that he is owed forgiveness. We should all root for him to turn his life around. Which brings me to Roddy White. What kind of friend (if a true friend) would turn his back on Vick when he needs his support the most? As long as White is seriously trying to keep Vick on the up and up, then I am okay with him supporting and spending time with this friend. Obviously, I don’t support either Vick or White flippantly disregarding Vick’s past and seeping into old habits. But I am going to give both the benefit of the doubt.
But back to the point 4ever Golden intially made, Vick was the best thing that ever happened to this team…The money and the fan fervor created in the Vick buzz years has carried over to the Matty Ice years. Would we have the resources to sign guys like Abe, Matty Ice, Roddy, etc. if the Dome was empty all of those years, if Vick jerseys weren’t selling like hotcakes? No. The excitement and buzz was SO HUGE that the team was still selling out games in the Vick aftermath, when we were not too good.
So of all Falcons who have ever put on a jersey to date, Vick single handedly brought this team to a its current state. And now we have Matty Ice and Co. to keep it there.
Do you guys actually
believe that garbage? Vick was the worst thing that ever happened to ATL. He absolutely sucked as a starter. One of the worst QB ratings for a starting QB ever. He was being paid as much as Payton Manning with a much poorer winning percentage, much higher interception to TD ratio, lower yards to pass average with the only stat better than Mannings was rushing. He was paid so much that ATL could not pay to get other players. The OC could not call a game plan because Vick was too stupid to follow plays. The least little bit of pressure and off he went. Look at the average yards per catch for his receivers – absolutely terrible. What was his winning percentage as a starter?
As far as filling seats, those were Vick fans not Falcons fans. He sucked as a player and as a team player. I am not going to get into what happened off the field as I want to keep this about football.
The ONLY thing Vick did good for the Falcons is not play during Petrino’s first season so the team would be able to draft Matt Ryan. Well, a second good thing was that Petrino left because the team was so bad.
Good Points
I still feel that the Falcons team, as it stands now, benefitted from the Vick years. We can debate back and forth the benefit to the team DURING the Vick years for a while. On the one hand, we did have good attendance, high national marketability, and Vick did win playoff games, but on the other hand, Vick, as I have said, simply wasn’t a good QB, he did strap us financially, and we have to question why the fans were actually at the Falcons games. I don’t know if garbage is the word I would use to describe Vick (once again leaving the legal problems out of the equation), but I agree that Matt Ryan is a much better fit. A much, much better fit…
Let’s all focus on that…the Vick years ARE behind us and I feel that currently, we have a really bright future with Matt Ryan and Co. Who really cares how or why we got to this point?
Go Falcons!
His rushing yards didn't count for anything?
Guess we were the #1 rushing team for three straight years thanks to TJ Duckett’s contributions.

Yeah
but other than just good stats what did it accomplish? Absolutely nothing! Stats don’t matter, the TEAM winning, getting to the playoffs and winning championships are the only thing that counts. I’d rather ATL have poorer QB stats and the team win than a ball hog like Vick that never won anything.
Also, do a stat balance calculation. As Vicks numbers improved the RB’s/WR’s/TE’s numbers went down. I would also take a guess that Vick’s stats going up did not make for more wins.
Well, that's the thing
It wasn’t anything he personally did, but ticket sales grew around him and he set into motion a chain of unfortunate events that ended up being a boon to this franchise. I don’t know that you can give him credit for it, per se, but you have to acknowledge it happened.

People become fans of players and Teams by how they dazzle on the field and vick did just that
Vick was the reason i became a falcons fan he got me excited when i watched him play, and made me follow the falcons, and now years later im still a falcons fan no matter what happens.
I still wore my falcons gear during the Petrino season and and that garbage, Being a falcons fan that year was equal to being a Clipper or royals fan, we sucked BAD.
but Im willing to bed a good percentage of falcons fans ages 16-30 became a fan because of Vick .
All im saying is that by drafting vick we increased our fan base, generated more revenue at the Dome, and Put the Falcons as a big time team that major markets wanted to televise. Looking back on it there’s no way we get to where we are now without him, it just doesn’t happen.
Well, I agree
I just chalk that more up to the vagaries of fate than anything Vick personally did.
Yeah, he was an exciting player, and that alone drew in a ton of fans. I would like to think that the fact that he was on the team when we made it to the NFC Championship Game also had something to do with that, but who knows.

Good points
and very well said. If you were attracted to dazzle you sure got that with Vick. If you were attracted to a winner that bolstered his team mates and help make them better players then Vick was not that.
Good points on televising the Falcons with Vick. It was because of him, not the team or because the Falcons were consistant winners.
Looking at it from an economic standpoint, yeah Vick helped the team. From a TEAM standpoint, building a winning culture and making the team better, he sucked.
I liked mike out of college but
As a pro his one man show BS ruined it for me. I quit watching the Falcons for a while because of him. His arrogance and pride stinks. If you people think that he wasn’t involved with this you are fools unfortunatly my WR is involved now too. I hope he learns from this that mikes a douche and makes better choices in the future. If you get back on the vick train you will be disapointed.

I don’t like the sound of this. I’m not 100% convinced Roddy might not have some liability in the matter and might face some form of punishment. I hope I’m wrong.

Not just liability
If video or other confirmed testimony shows that Roddy lied to police, he can be charged with making a false statement to police. It’s a misdemeanor, but still, Roddy needs to be more classy than this.

Until anything new comes out
This is a little overblown. Vick’s lawyer said he left 10 minutes before the shooting. The night club owner has video showing Vick and White leaving three minutes before the shooting. This wouldn’t be a factor if their statement had said, “We left a few minutes before the shooting.” Seriously, its the difference between saying you left at midnight and saying you left at 12:07.
I can’t fault White for hanging out with Vick either. Since he was released, Vick has pretty much been a model citizen. We all have friends that make dumb mistakes, but we’re still friends with them.

Nobody's saying Roddy's going to death row for incorrectly estimating his time of exit.
But the league and law enforcement will want to know exactly when he left and exactly why Vick’s lawyers are disputing video evidence.
Nothing in Tom’s post was overblown — it’s all fact.

Thanks
I was getting ready to say that. All I’m saying is that this is a sketchy situation that White unfortunately got wrapped up in just by being present. I truly believe that White had nothing to do with any of the drama. The police and the league will have to sort this out, and it’s just a shame that White will have to deal with any of this, even if it’s only a minor distraction. I just hope that he is being and will continue to be truthful.
Opinion: Vick might not have anything to do with this either, but it’s a strange coincidence that the guy that got shot was one of his co-defendants. Somebody might have done it on Vick’s behalf without his knowing. No matter what, it looks bad for Vick, for sure.

Not your post. Sorry.
It is a sketchy situation, but I don’t think there is a cover up or another reason for the lawyer saying that they left 10 minutes early.

if something happens after you leave
how can you know how long you were gone before it happened? i typically do not look at the time when i leave a place.. so, if roddy is off a few minutes in time, i see no big deal. vick, on the other hand, is not supposed to be associating with people charged with him in the dog fighting crime. as he is already on thin ice, something could come of that issue.

good point
about looking at the time when we leave. It’s all about perception. Long before can mean any significant time. To prosecutors, 3 minutes isn’t long enough and they want to make a quick buck by blowing it up.
But not saying that he had nothing to do with it either.
Live, .... for the possibility
Helping out at a football camp for Vick is one thing. But attending his birthday party at a club where bad things could happen, is at best a a bad judgment call on White’s part. He should not have been there at all. Vick himself should not have been there. If you are trying to stay out of trouble, keep yourself out of situations that could become detrimental.
As long as they left before the incident and had no involvement before it happened, White should not face any consequences. But as for the Falcons, they should have a little talk with White, to remind him what is more important. Wasn’t there a stipulation or some sort of unofficial agreement that White is not to associate with certain friends in his past that could land him in situations like this.
White, while not legally wrong (as of right now), should reexamine his actions, as they could lead to something much worse. I don’t want to see our star receiver getting thrown in jail, or suspended for multiple games.
Well, there are several contributing factors to this.
I usually don’t look at the time when I leave a place, but if I do, it usually doesn’t register what time it is anyway.
What if their vehicle’s clock was slow, and they didn’t check their phones?
Say the shooting happened at 12:10, and their vehicle’s clock was a few minutes slow, so that they thought it was 12:00 when they left. They wouldn’t know any better unless there was camera evidence. Now naturally, this could look like a thing where MV7 (or someone) put a hit on this Quanis guy to either kill him or scare him.
OR….
this is purely coincidental. For instance, I leave a bank, 10 minutes later it’s robbed. That doesn’t necessarily mean I called my people in to let them know security was low, but you never know.
I think MV7 understands the dogfighting thing was dumb, and I do feel like he was legitimately trying to get his life straight. That being said, if he really was trying to get his life straight, then there’s no way he would go out and try something this stupid. I know people can be ridiculously dumb, but surely…..SURELY he wouldn’t do something really dumb knowing that he’d be out of the NFL (and millions of dollars) for good.
Even for a b-day party, the club might not’ve been completely exclusive to him. It could’ve just been coincidence.

i dont really get how this is a big deal, so VIck had Bday party were anyone could come to a 50$ fee, roddy was there him and mike continue to be good friends. So him and mike hang out at the party until around 2 AM and leave. then after they leave a shooting happens to occur. Now police say Vick is in no way a suspect. He spoke to the police and handled everything. How is this effecting him. Its a coincidence nothing more. I just don’t get that this is a big deal Vick had NEVER had any prior history to anything gun related or anything while he was in ATL now that he turned his life around, why shoot people at his own birthday party. I feel this is a non issue the media Is WAY over playing. And as far as the person who was shot ,the former dog fighter, multiple people said no one in the party had any contact with him and he had just arrived.
I agree with those that say this isn't a huge deal
Particularly from Roddy’s standpoint. I don’t think the facts have come together enough for anyone to think that Roddy’s story is not accurate or that he is covering up for his friend. Even if the video evidence shows that Vick didn’t leave until 3 minutes before the shooting, there’s still a reasonable time to indicate that he didn’t have anything to do with it. A lot can happen in that short a period of time (e.g., he could have gotten in his car and been over a half mile away from the entire event by the time it actually occurred).
Regardless, this is Vick’s problem, not Roddy’s. It’s far from ridiculous for Roddy to be friends with Vick, just like it’s far from ridiculous for any Steeler to be friends with Roethlisberger. It’s a matter of public interest that Roddy just happens to have his name mixed up with because he’s been asked some questions about the entire incident. Roddy could very well be mistaken about where Vick was or how soon Vick left. The only downside from the Falcons perspective to this whole story is that it yet again links Vick to the Falcons from a negative media perspective. But I can’t hold too much judgment against Roddy unless he affirmatively lied on Vick’s behalf. Even then, it would be a display of poor judgment, but one that is far outside of Roddy’s history.
so i would be up for
trading Jenks and our 1st rounder for Jackson.
Not happy about this upcoming draft anyway.
i wouldn't deal our first rounder until we know for sure we won't get what we need.
Pipe dream here, but AJ Green or Julio Jones would make fantastic replacements. I’m a UGA homer but I think JJ fits more into Jenks’s mold of a physical blocker with good ball skills.
We’ll probably look to snag a franchise TE or an OL if one of ours doesn’t pan out this year.

Not a big deal
If somebody asked me what time I got off work last night, I couldn’t tell them down to the minute, and I had a clock in front of me until I left. Being off by a few minute as to what time you left is an easy mistake to make (especially if you’ve had a few), and it’s doubtful that they had anything to gain by spotting themselves a couple of minutes. At worst it was a slight exaggeration of a trivial detail, at best it was an honest mistake. I don’t even like Vick but this is just reaching.
being off a few minutes might also be easy

This whole thing shouldn’t even have went down. Even if Vick wasn’t involved he provided the avenue for the drama to take place. Am I saying he shouldn’t have a life? Yes that’s what I’m saying. Vick’s problem has always been equally about who he associates with. I’m not doubting that he’s taken strides forward in his own life, but it’s those kind of associations that are going to doom him unless he cuts them.
And now the Eagles might release him.

Coincidences can happen a couple of times but after there are several coincidences coinciding with the fact that there always seems to be some sort of trouble around someone..
What comes to mind right now is car insurance. If you are in a no-fault accident your rates dont go up but after several no-faults, you start to take a serious increase in your insurance. Why? You might not be breaking the law but what you are doing is contributing to something that is putting others at risk.
As they say in the Marines…Good initiative bad judgement. The good initiative is helping a friend. The bad judgement is the friend he is helping and hanging around.
No harm no foul
Vick still left before the shooting….He probably wasn’t notified until maybe 20 or 30min. after the shooting due to people possibly “fleeing for their lives.” I know if I hear gunshots I’m not calling mike vick. I’m callin my mother, dad, and lil sis to tell em I love em one last time.
Don’t believe the hype.
Somebody above mentioned "Vick, the best the thing to happen to the Falcons".
I am in outside sales and I talk to a lot of different people. Football talk is great sales fodder so the topic comes up very often. I spoke to one lady about the Falcons sticker in her car window. She told me “I’m not a Falcons fan, I’m a Michael Vick Fan”. This seems to be an overwhelming mindset around certain parts of the city. It is evident by what happened at the Eagles game last year. Now the Falcons are having to completely change public oppinion and develope an entirely new fanbase, which is happening. That period will be forever associated with shame not glory. All you people who haven’t learned your lesson by now are like those people who keep going back to the abusive relationship. Burn your Vick jersey and buy in to a real team atmosphere.

When the Falcons win the Super Bowl in the next couple of years
There will be zero talk about Mike Vick being the greatest thing to happen to the Falcons
by LetsGoFalcons on Jul 1, 2010 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions
You have to make the distinction...
Between those fans who can objectively recognize the financial and national benefit Vick provided the team from those fans who still would want Vick on the team and still don #7 jerseys to the game.
No, I would not rank Vick as the best Falcon ever (playing wise) nor would I view him as one of my favorite players (despite the incidents). In fact, I was never really sold on him as a QB, even before the troubles arose. But can you honestly say that the Falcons would be where they are now without the Vick years? Without the Vick years, we’d be the Texans. A solid team that nobody knows about and/or cares about outside of the Houston area (for good or for bad).
Because we had the most marketable player in the NFL for a few years (a good thing) and because of the eventual scandal (a bad thing) the Falcons have been newsworthy for almost a decade…You can’t say that about most teams.
Yes, if we win the Super Bowl in two years, I won’t call for an honorary ring to be delivered to Vick, and the credit for the on-the-field Falcons will be given to Ryan or whoever. But a lot of what is on the field pertains to the events that take place off the field. In order to field a winning team you need (a) money and (b) resolve and intelligence. I honestly believe we learned a lot from the Vick, Petrino and heck, D Hall, debacles. Now we have a great team with a great attidude. But the $$$ and the mindsight was fueled initially by Vick.
That is why Vick is important to the team. Not because he was a great player.

I disagree
According to a Harris Poll from October of last year, the Falcons were 13th in popularity, ahead of teams like the Chargers, Dolphins, Redskins, Ravens, Panthers, Saints (okay, this will likely change this season)…
Thus, we are more relevant than you give us credit. I, too, am glad that Vick is gone. But now I feel people are rooting for us given all the crap we went through, and I still argue that we have a good financial situation because of Vick. The post below says: “Matt Ryan leading them out of darkness.” I agree but there would be no story here without the darkness in the first place…
my angle on why roddy should have been elsewhere
I don’t like our star receiver being best friends with a guy who said, in public, over the offseason that he wanted to go to the Panthers so that he could play the falcons twice a year. Forget that it was Vick, or that it was a former teammate. As a fan, I want Roddy to hate anyone who says something like that. Or at least have a serious beef with them – but definitely not eat mexican with them at 2 AM. I know it’s a business but can’t you at least try to maintain the facade?

it's odd because
White can’t catch Vick’s Balls, but he can catch Harrington, Redman and Ryan’s.
I once heard somewhere that Steve Smith of the Panthers said about Jake Delhomme that he never loved him as a player but loved him as a person.
Live, .... for the possibility
It is funny that this happened at a club...
called Guadalajara. Perhaps Vick wasn’t even there. It was his alter ego Ron Mexico!
