I was just listening to the radio, and one of the mid-day sports shows asked local sports reporter Chuck Dowdle about the new stadium proposal, and he had some interesting information about where the idea comes from, how the facility is to be used, where it will be located, and where the money is coming from.
I'm sure there is no surprises when I say the idea for the stadium comes from Jerry Jones and Dallas' new monstrosity of a stadium. Arthur and Stephanie Blank took a tour of the Cowboys' new home and liked what they saw, not only as a football facility, but as a multi-use (and multi-revenue) facility. Blank doesn't have his heart set on an open-air stadium, and indications seem to be that he is considering a retractable roof stadium to allow for various functions, boxing being the fuction Dowdle mentioned.
Current plans are to locate the new stadium where the yellow lot is for the Georgia Dome, which is essentially across the street from the old stadium, towards the Georgia World Congress center. No plans exist to demolish the Georgia Dome.
The proposal involves Blank ponying up at least $250 million, and the remainder of the money coming from the "Hotel/Motel" sales tax, which is a penny per room tax on local hotels and motels. (Dowdle did not indicate if it was a penny per night, per dollar or flat tax per hotel per month/year).
