The Fallen and forgotten
There are certain things about this league that always bothered me. The thing that bothers me the most is the "here and now" mentality. If a player does well and wins the team games one season, then has an off season the next, he is seen as a bother, a nuisance, or other hateful things. by this time i think you all know who i am talking about. Mr. jason elam. this is one of my more serious post, so serious comments are appretiated. jump
there has been so many negative things said about this guy. when i watched the games on the play by play on nfl.com there was nothin but hate from fellow falcons fans. i know he lost us a few games, but we werent that strong of a team in the first place to be placing so much blame on him. last take it back a season. remember the bears game. elam wit a last second feild goal. how boat elam going for like 96%. the fact is he won us just as many if not more games than he lost us these past two seasons. i know it is frusterating to watch him clank 30 yarders off the goal post. let me put this all into prespective for you. we were a banged up team last year. injuries from young guns, and crucial vets. our offense staggered a lot. our pass D was not where it shoulve been. so you say elam lost us a game or two that coulve put us into the playoffs? then what. we were not a strong team as a whole to go anywhere in the playoffs. i love the falcons, its jus the fact of injuries, busts (JA) jenkins not stepping up, and other random factors. so by not going to the playoffs we have a better draft selection. this means in a round about way by him losing us a game or two we can now get SPPPOOOOONN a little easier. he was great the past seasons. i love him as a player. i am sadend that he retired as a bronco. i know thats what he wanted, but he shoulve went out playn. so this post is just a last thought about our man elam. thoughts?

okay
I disagree with you, but I understnad what you are saying. To me though, he is being payed to win games by kicking field goals. If you are not doing that then you need to go. Losing by missing a field goal or multiple field goals to me is unacceptable. Hell I played Receiver/Corner and I could kick some of the field goals he missed. My HS coach actually wanted me to kick for the team because he saw what I could do on the Soccer field but I turned him down (long story). If you are getting payed to win games and you are consistently failing to do so you deserve to catch some hell in my opinion.

That's the nature of this business
When you’re a kicker, you have a short leash, and Elam did cost us games last year with his leg. I like him as a person, but the team did what they have to do in getting rid of him.

don't see the issue
he seems to also think he doesn’t “have it” anymore by retiring, i could see if he had been with us for years and just had 1 bad year but we signed a guy at the end of his great career and for us or him to expect anything more than 1 or 2 years is crazy
In my estimation the New Russian Falconic Party
Showed great mercy and respect in the way they handled him. He even said himself he was surprised it didn’t happen sooner. When the show is over it’s just over. He fell apart and it cost us at least 2 games. The Falcons were gracious.

The difference here is he was good in year one, but faltered in year two.
I remember the Bears game. When he made the kick, the Dome was louder than it had been in many, many years.
I was also at the Bucs game that year when he made the FG in overtime to seal our playoff fate.
To be honest, I think that’s why we kept him around so long; we kept believing that his old clutch self would kick back in and it just never did.
Missing FGs isn’t just about the points, it’s also about field position. If I miss a 50 yard field goal, the opponent gets the ball on their own 33. (instead of, say, their own 20.) Missing a 30 yarder is all about the points. Those are supposed to be the automatic 3s, and Elam just wasn’t doin it last year. I hate it for him because he’s a great guy, but it happens to everyone eventually.
He’ll go down as one of the greatest kickers ever and rightfully so, but just like in any pro sport, when you lose it, you lose it.

I'm extremely tired and I think I bombed some of my comment, but I'll survive, I suppose.

this post wanst really about should we let him go, or is he done, or what not. it was more about people bashing him the way i saw on blogs and durring games, im jus making sure that people knew how good he was to us, and jus remember him in a good light, not the bashing i saw against him. thanx for the comments i love ya"ll

It's just sports I guess.
I would never really hurt someone for sports but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to back my car over Reggie Bush’s melon a few times. That’s what makes being a fan fun. If we didn’t have such deep feelings about stuff we wouldn’t be fans at all.

mardy
in this business if you are pleased with a player you praise him.
If you are displease you harass him.
In blogging the harassment may seem harsh and unforgiving but words are all we have.
If i feel that JA98 is a waste of air on the defense I must use words that will seem harsh.
It doesn’t mean that I feel I could do better or that just anyone can fit his position.
I know and respect that he has invested years of training to get where he is.
I still want him out of our defense and will use whatever harsh words come to mind until he is either gone or becomes what he was supposed to become.
Elam had a great carrier and has my appreciation for being such a good player and will have a warm spot in my heart for all time. But someone once said what i feel better than me about him if he was to come back to our roster now I would have to say “KICK THE BUM OUT”
this isn't college football
nobody is obliged to keep anyone on scholarship … you earn your paycheck, and Elam didn’t earn the right to eat
