Falcons To Trade Chris Houston To Detroit Lions
I'll have more detail tomorrow morning, but in the meantime mull this move over. Lot happening in Atlanta these last few days, eh?

I dunno
I am reserved on this. Houston provided some great flashes but than again he also provided flashes of “huh?”. I think if he could ever learn to get his head turned around to look for the ball he could be a pro bowler.
WHAAAAAAT
Shock of the day for me.
Can’t say I expected this.
I don’t know whether to be happy or sad. We always sad that Houston might be a very capable #2 DB. Now we’ll never know, eh?
Unless they gave us their first rounder for him. Har Har Har Har
Upon further review, we gave him away for nothing!
We couldn’t have gotten a LITTLE more out of them for him? Geez. :/ I don’t approve.

we always said* I fail the grammar police today.

Consider the following:
YPC = Yards Per Completion (total yards gained by the receivers you guarded divided by the number of times you were targeted and the receiver actually caught the ball)
CA% = Completion Against Percentage (number of times you were targeted and the receiver actually caught the ball divided by the number of times you were targeted)
with both CA% and YPC, the lower the better
Grimes
YPC: 11.8
CA%: 62.4 (58/93)
Owens – sample size ALERT!
YPC: 17.2
CA%: 56 (14/25)
Jackson – sample size ALERT!
YPC: 9
CA%: 72.7 (24/33)
Williams – sample size ALERT!
YPC: 13.8
CA%: 75.9 (22/29)
Hill – sample size ALERT!
YPC: 17.3
CA%: 90.9
Houston
YPC: 12
CA%: 66.7 (42/63)
Robinson
YPC: 11
CA%: 65.9 (54/82)
Grimes, Houston, and Robinson had nearly identical numbers in coverage.
One of the following must be true:
(1) TD is gonna draft a CB in the first round
(2) TD has a huge man crush on Grimsey

WEATHERSPOOOOOOON
We do have a lot of DBs on the roster.
You forgot #3. Dunta plays like his hair is on fire at all times.
"Ryan, under center. Single receiver set, time on his side. Ryan, gonna throw. First professional pass.....CAUGHT!! Jenkins! 30! 25! 20! 15! 10! 5! He lives in Atlanta!!!" -Wes Durham
Here's what it is
Sample size aside, Chris Owens has talent and is the present and future #2 corner in Atlanta. Dunta Robinson was obviously going to start. At the nickel, you can either have a guy who has the potential to make a ton of game-changing picks (Grimes) or a solid coverage corner who never even looks for the damn ball. Obviously, the team was going to choose Grimes.
At that point, you’re looking at Houston as as a #4 corner, and that’s pointless when you can get something for him. Do I love this move? No. But I see the logic behind it.

I don't think logic was used.
Houston = #23.
Robinson = #23.
There’s only room for one #23 in these parts. TD merely prevented a fight to the death from occurring in Flowery Branch.

True.
But value Dave. Value …

We clearly view the value very different than Dimitroff & Co.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t, but his track record is pretty good.

Seems a lot of people have forgot about Tye Hill...
He didn’t pick up the defense as quickly as hoped, but having a full spring and summer to learn is going to help a lot. Talent wise, he’s the best on the roster. Can he put it all together? Robinson, Williams, Jackson, Owens, Hill, and Grimes. FWIW, I expect a lot more zone in ’10…

Know how many times Hill was thrown at last year? 11. Know how many times the receiver caught it? 10.
There is more than “I can’t learn the defense” at work there.

At least he stopped one of them.

Really?
All it takes is a step for an NFL WR to get separation. Having to “think” you way through your responsibilities instead of reacting is all the time a WR needs…
"If lessons were learned in defeat, our team is getting a great education." -Murray Warmath
even reacting isn't fast enough sometimes.
the truly elite receivers know how to throw off even some of the best DBs. It’s what makes Revis and Asomugha special players.
"Ryan, under center. Single receiver set, time on his side. Ryan, gonna throw. First professional pass.....CAUGHT!! Jenkins! 30! 25! 20! 15! 10! 5! He lives in Atlanta!!!" -Wes Durham
Also, at 17.3 ypc, I'd bet more than a couple had him in coverage for 6+ seconds...
"If lessons were learned in defeat, our team is getting a great education." -Murray Warmath
fair enough
but he did fairly bad (worst coverage CB on our roster last year), just like any of us would, but the worst nonetheless

If Dimitroff drafts another corner, Hill is gone
I think they’d like to give him a shot, but they also soured on him quickly in 2009.

At the end of the day
We are the guys(or girls) with the blindfold over our eyes and the Td Smitty and the rest of the people who make the huge Atlanta Falcon decisions. Now either they are pushing us to the promise land which is the Lombardi trophy or off a cliff. As fans we can trust them and walk the way they direct us or take off the blindfold smack the guy and run to another team. Me? Im walking with the blindfold on. I dont know about yall.

I guess ...
But at a certain point, everything is subject to scrutiny. Otherwise why does this blog exist? I heart TD, and I know he’ll make calculated choices every time, doesn’t mean I have to agree with him though.
To me, it’s the fandom equivalent of yelling obscenities at the t.v. after BVG drops Abe into coverage for the 8th time in a game …

Actually I predict 8 wins for the Leos.
I wrote it in bold cause I want to be able to find it to prove it later.

We lost a very capable
bench warmer.
I can’t say I’m broken up about this. He wasn’t starting, and he wasn’t contributing much. This trade is somewhat reminiscent of the Laurent Robinson trade, and we were definitely ok after that.

yeah because he ended up on the garbage dump that is the Rams
I feel bad for the kid. Yet another product of the Birds who looked like he was gonna be worth somethin until he got hurt. I hope the trend doesn’t continue.
Imagine if he’d played for a team with a real QB. You just never know what’ll happen.

I hope it's nothing like the Laurent Robinson trade
Because the team gave him away for virtually nothing (check), and created a giant hole at WR after HD got hurt (saying a prayer for Grimes’ and Owens’ knees and hamstrings now).

This piece of news feels so good to mull. Makes up for 60% of the Duntabacle.
Sweet sweet mulling.

More picks in a fairly deep draft = very good thing
We know the team is looking to shore up the O-Line, WRs, and LBs, so making this trade to get an additional pick and move up to the top of the 5th round for a potential second or third string player seems like a good idea to me.
Again, this gives us flexibility to address more areas of need or trade up in the draft if a player (like Eric Berry) starts to slip.
I know many people on here are not satisfied with our corner situation, but I think we are going to be better off this season than last. Our secondary now has more talent and more experience and I think we’ll see a significant improvement in play from them. I’d rather the team take the risks they did, they try to solve our CB problem in a draft lacking any can’t miss CB prospects.

This made the DR move make sense
Now we can start trading up for a second rounder. I’m glad we got something for him. We didn’t miss anything when he was out last year.

I agree with Franky - I think I hate it
I mean, I understand it. With Williams re-signed and Dunta coming in, somebody had to go – I just figured Tye Hill was first in line. 2010 is the last year of Houston’s rookie contract, and he wasn’t in the long-term plans, so they decided to get at least something for him. Yes, he regressed last season. I still don’t like it. Hopefully Owens is ready to be a full-time starter at the beginning of next season…

What makes this move doable for me is Owens
I think he showed signs of being ready at the end of 2009, and I think he’ll have that spot nailed down in 2010.

agree with orang3b ...
But ignoring sample size, Chevis Jackson wasn’t completely miserable last year in coverage.

I think Chevis ought to get more of a shot

For whatever reason, the Coaches & Front Office have him pegged as Nickleback only. Even after the disaster last year, when they were shuffling guys in and out of the rotation at CB, Chevis never got a shot on the outside.
And I hope you’re right about Owens being ready in ’10…

Let me put it this way
So that you can mock me more easily later. If I had to make one prediction about the Falcons in 2010, I’d predict that Owens starts outside and plays well there. Seriously.

I like it
i love all the draft picks and we IMO have a legitament 2nd and 3rd corner. The depth chart should be in this:
1: Dunta Robinson
2,3,4: a fight between Grimes, Owens, and Williams
so where does chris houston fit into all of this?
At best he’d be number 5 and we just got an extra pick and moved up 17 spots in the fith for a number 5 CB. I say I like it!
HOW MUCH MONEY DID THE SAINTS GIVE THE REFS?!?!?!?!
