Mock Draft

Here is my preference for the falcons in the draft this year.

1st round- Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri     Best pure outside linebacker in the draft. Plays excellent in coverage and can be deadly with his speed in blitz packages.

3rd round- John Jerry, OG, Ole Miss     Has great size at 6'5" 328 and solid speed running a 5.15 40. Could play guard or right tackle.

4th round- Ben Tate, RB, Auburn     Ran a good 40, very strong and athletic, could be a good compliment to the other runners.

4th round Comp- Ted Larsen, C, NC State     Can be the future center of the franchise. Has good quickness and strength as he was a former DT

4th round Comp- David Gettis, WR, Baylor     Big, athletic receiver. Needs some work on his route running, but that can be taught. You can't teach size.

5th round- Nate Byham, TE, Pittsburgh     Very good blocker, needs some work with his receiving, would complement Gonzo nicely

6th round- Kevin Basped, DE, Nevada     He is a project. Has great size, could be good one day. Needs a lot of work on technique. Who better than a veteran like Abe to help him get started.

7th round comp- Walter McFadden, CB, Auburn     I know, another corner, but at this point, I had pretty much addressed every other position of need and who knows, maybe he could suprise a person or two.

I know, I know, no pass rushers until the 6th round. I believe we already have depth at DE in Bierrmann and Sidbury. If there is not an elite pass rusher available in the first round, I don't think there is anyone worth taking until a later round and attempting to develop him. Besides that, I tried to address needs along with BPA. Hate it, love it, let me know what you think.

So I typed out a nice long entry, took some time to reflect and well, deleted the post b/c I like the thought process you used to come up with your picks. The only real issue I have is the pick of Ben Tate. I would so much rather see that pick used to get one of the top rated Centers, specifically Matt Tennant or Eric Olsen. I think the Jerry pick is in line with his value, and if he’s taken earlier I do like several of the other gaurds that are rated 4th roundish.

I still feel our defensive line could use depth, specifically at DT. So I would love to see one pick addressing depth specifically, i.e. Vance Walker type player.

Either way, I can tell you took a lot of time to fill out your draft for us and if in theory this is what our team walks away with, I’m good with it!

Tennant was a target of mine

But most reports I looked at had him going in the second or third round. When it came down to it, I was more willing to spend that pick on Jerry and pick up another center later on in the draft. Olsen was actually rated behind Larsen in the reports I was looking at. I wouldn’t mind picking up a DT but in all likelihood, the guy would end up on the practice squad especially with Anderson getting solid reps at DT which increases the depth at that position

Only part of this that I like was...

Weatherspoon. We need a Pass Rusher with our 3rd round pick if we get Weatherspoon with the first. After that we can go and solidify the offensive line with C and G picks and maybe throw in a TE as well.

Any suggestions?

For a pass rusher who could be drafted in the third round that would undoubtably be better than Bierrman and Sidbury? Because if we are using that pick to increase depth at the position, it is a waste of the pick. Depth can be found later in the draft. As much as I wanted to give us a great DE, there is not one I wanted enough to pass up on Weatherspoon

Lang?

I believe he dropped a bit after his Combine, but he had a terrific career at Troy.

Here are some stats to contemplate

Lang: 6-4 266lbs 5.01 40 time: Senior Season- 13 games, 53 tackles, 12.5 TFL, 8.5 sacks, 3 FF, 1 PD, 4 QB hurries
Basped: 6-5 258 4.76 40 time: Junior Season- 12 games, 32 tackles, 12.5 TFL, 9.5 sacks, 0 FF, 3 PD, 2 QB hurries
Sidbury: 6-3 266 4.53 40 time: Senior Season- 16 games, 56 tackles, 20 TFL, 11.5 sacks, 3 FF, 2 PD, 4 QB hurries
These are according to NFLDraftScout.com and cfbstats.com.

I love the early rounds

Weatherspoon and Jerry are faves of mine. The one I don’t really like (as someone else stated) is Tate. I don’t think we need any more runnning backs. I would rather grab another offensive lineman, or another receiver. There are some pretty good receivers that would still be there in the 4th: Mardy Gilyard, Eric Decker, Andre Roberts, Blair White…

Gettis is a good find

I recommend you check him out. He has great measureables. I think he is that diamond in the rough, a potential Marques Colston. Just my opinion though.

Yeah, I still can’t shake the running back pick. Been trying to talk myself into it but I can’t. I know lots of people are all up and down about Spiller, McCluster, McKnight…. so forth. Its just, we were fine on RB last year even with Turner hurt. Next year, after we trade Norwood, yeah I see us in need, but for now I’d rather improve our OL and front 7.

I am in complete objection to spending one of our top picks on Spiller

But considering we are likely to get two compensational picks in the fourth round and we are now looking at potentially picking up another fourth rounder from the lions for Houston, I think it’s worth it to take a shot on this guy. I like Burner leading the run game, Norwood for a change of pace, and Snelling to come in when needed. But Turner is getting old, Norwood can’t stay healthy, and Snelling isn’t a #1 back. I agree that if there is a guy sitting there, be it guard, tackle, or the defensive front seven, that the coaches have fallen in love with, we should get him. But Tate won’t be around at the end of the fourth round, some of these guys will be

I’ll buy into the “it’s worth a gamble”. Either way, I like how you go about what you’re doing. If we’re going to take a gamble on anything though, take Aaron Pettrey, K, Ohio State. Hands down the best kicker in the worst kicking class ever hehe~!

By the way, I apologize for an incorrect statement. We did not receive a fourth round pick for Houston as previously stated. Instead, we received a sixth round pick and swapped fifth round picks.

Love the first pick, the others...not so much

Sean Weatherspoon is a beast…whoever drafts him will have a versatile leader for years to come…I would love for the falcons do draft him and some experts are saying that if the falcons don’t draft him he will go to the saints(boo!) to plug up the hole Scott Fujita left. I see Sean Weatherspoon as this years Brian Cushing and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was next years defensive rookie of the year, wherever he ends up playing.
