In total, $25.5 million of that is guaranteed. In terms of overall dollars, that would make him the second highest paid cornerback in the league, behind only Nnamdi Asomugha.

I'm starting to warm to the signing a little bit, but considering the Falcons were only bidding against themselves, this seems like an awful lot of money.

Yeah, its alot

but its not totally uncharacteristic. We did the same thing to Turner.
I think we’re starting to see a trend. I know TD and Smitty have labeled us a “build through the draft” team, but they’re not afraid of getting the guy they want in free agency so that we have fewer needs in the draft. It seems like a healthy mix of free agency and draft building.

Its true. I'm a Falcoholic! I just can't live without Falcohol!

Dunta’s the guy this year. Yeah, I don’t like this move as much, but given his track record I have to give the Comrade the benefit of the doubt.

Exactly

It would still be nice to have a second-rounder, but as Daniel Cox over at Atlanta Falcons Examiner pointed out, it’s likely we’ll get a third round compensatory pick. We can do some real damage in this draft now, and it doesn’t have to be limited to the defensive side of the football.

Idk Dave

Your money prediction was almost spot on.

I think you said somewhere in the neighborhood of 27M guaranteed and anywhere from 45-55M for the 6 years.

Remember, he’s only guaranteed 25.5M over the 6 years, so if he sucks, it won’t be quite as bad a hit as someone like…..say, Peppers.

Also, the man wanted to get paid, and now he’s been paid. Do you think he’ll play worth a crap now? I certainly hope so.

Well....the fact that he got less guaranteed than you predicted would serve as a positive.

I really think that it’s a contract loaded with so many “YOU BETTER PLAY GOOD OR BE DEPORTED TO MOTHER RUSSIA” incentives that hopefully he’ll live up to the money we’re throwing (into the wind) at him.

he’ll get somewhere between the 25.5 million guarantee and the 57 million the contract is for. I imagine that’s how it usually is. Hopefully it’s on the lesser side, for our future cap’s sake.

Bad logic ahoy!

I don’t recall saying he deserved it. I recall saying he got it, and that I didn’t see what the big deal was because it looks like his guaranteed isn’t that bad, he was picked by Dimitroff who’s supposed to have an eye for DBs, and it’s an uncapped season.

I think the fact that Houston was a McKay/Petrino joint and Dunta was selected by Dimitroff is sufficient to distinguish the two. Also, I’ve never had beef with Houston. This D is intended to get pressure. We spend higher picks on DE than CB usually. It’s amazing how bad DBs look when they have to cover a seven-ten count.

I’d have personally preferred Bodden, but then again I wanted Dorsey over Ryan, so what do I know. Dimitroff seems to know what he’s doing and he’s supposed to be good with CB scouting.

Amen

I don’t have a problem with Houston; I think our pass rush made our secondary look worse than it actually is. It’s built a certain way; kinda like wondering why your Ferrari won’t tow a boat or why you minivan can’t do a 14 second quarter mile.

It's uncapped in 2010 only

When they get a new deal done (knock on wood; I don’t want a lockout in 2011), it is virtually guaranteed to have a Salary Cap again. $9.5M per is sure to be a hefty chunk of that.

Yall way overpaid for Dunta

He is not close to top 2 CB and probably isnt even in the top 30.

I was mad that the Texans let him go, but that doesnt mean he’s a good player. He is the best CB in this FA class, but that also means nothing because its an extremely weak CB class. The reason I wanted Dunta back is because I dont think we have anyone better or can get anyone better at CB, but again, that doesnt mean he is good.

Dunta didnt play hard when he was trying to get paid and has an attitude problem. Getting paid and already playing poorly are not two things you want together. Dunta believes he is one of the best and now the money backs it up. I wouldnt be surprised if he lets his reputation carry him through his career much like he let his reputation carry him to $57 mil (HA HA HA).

With all that being said, IF he can fully recover from his injury suffered in 2007 and regain his acceleration, he might have a chance to be worth half the money you paid him.

Mainly CB, FS, RB, and NT

But that didnt stop us from having a top 5 defense the last 13 games of the season and the best passing offense too. Our defense looks horrible last season because we got completely torched the 1st three games before we signed Bernard Pollard. Once Pollard started playing with us our defense did a complete 180 and was top 5 with Bernard, even with Cunta Robinson.

We were 9-7 last year, if this signing gets us just one or two additional wins....

and sends us to the playoffs, it will be well worth the money.

You don’t get the top Free Agent at a position of need without paying a premium. It would have been the same if we had went after Peppers or Rolle. There is a reason that cheap Free Agents are cheap. We can either spend the money to get the talent we need, or we can sit on the sidelines – never take any risks – and be happy with mediocrity.

This is a risky move but no more than spending more draft picks on players that might not pan out. If this puts us over the top, I doubt we’ll hear anyone complaining.

We could have the exact same team and do better. We are getting upgrades just from having HD, Jerry, Willy Mo, BW back from IR. Now we get a decent corner and a bunch of draft picks we are sitting pretty boys. I would not want to play us. New contract details - Dunta is getting less money than reported

according to PFT
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/06/duntas-guarantee-lower-than-advertised/

The deal initially was reported as paying Robinson $25.5 million guaranteed. A source with access to the numbers, however, tells us that this interpretation of the contract includes as guaranteed money a $3 million non-guaranteed option bonus payable in 2012.

Though the option bonus has a non-exercise fee, the Falcons could cut Robinson before the due date of the bonus and avoid the $3 million. Whether they will or won’t doesn’t matter; the point is that the $3 million isn’t guaranteed.

So the guaranteed money matches the amount given by the Colts to cornerback Kelvin Hayden.

I mean, if you compare Hayden and Dunta’s completion against % and yards/catch from ’09, the numbers are almost identical. Difference is that Hayden picked three passes last year.
