How the Lions fleeced the Falcons - Last word on Chris Houston Trade

The details concerning the last minute alteration of the Chris Houston trade has come out.  Initially we heard that the terms of the deal involved the Falcons receiving Detroit's sixth-round pick in the 2010 draft, along with a swap of fifth-round selections.  Then the terms were altered with Atlanta only receiving Detroit's sixth-rounder this year and a conditional seventh-round pick next year.

According to PFT

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/25/lions-squeezed-falcons-into-taking-less-for-chris-houston/

"...the Lions contacted the Falcons and said that Houston could not pass the physical imposed by Lions' doctors.  We're told that the Lions also said that perhaps Houston could pass the physical if the terms of the deal were adjusted.

And so the terms of the deal were adjusted, and Houston passed the physical.

Though the Falcons could have scrapped the trade and kept Chris Houston, they opted to process, and they probably will be reluctant to do a deal with Detroit the next time an opportunity to do so arises.

Hmm

Sounds like they knew what they were getting to me. I dotn blame them, I would try to give as little as possible as well. Quite frankly I still don’t know why they even wanted him to begin with, but at the same time I am glad the we got something (anything) for him.

That's....shady

If true, that should be the last deal the Falcons do with the Lions for a very long time.

If true

Detroit is only killing themselves. No team will want to deal with them once word gets out. I don’t think Chris Houston is worth ruining your reputation

by zooker on Mar 25, 2010 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Wow, that's dirty

But honestly, it doesn’t matter that much. If you’re trading for Meh, your teams probably desperate. Stafford is not star-QB material either, he should stick to doing his Axe commercials.
They wouldn’t recognize talent if it hit them in the head and started shouting “0-16!!!!!”

I'm torn...

My ex-boss (and now football buddy since we both have moved on to better jobs) and his best friend are lions fans so i try to pull for them but this kinda pisses me off….almost as much as the 3 telemarketrs that have called me back to back while i was typing this lol

Sounds like a screw job, no lewd thoughts intended.

Bribery much?

Funny, reminds me of the XYZ Affair I just covered in my college US History class. We try to send someone over, they say no, then they bring their guys over and insist that we can “buy” peace (in this case, a trade) with them by agreeing to their terms.

However, in this case, we folded.

If this report is accurate, my respect for the Lions FO (I still like the coach/players) has decreased exponentially.

I think it's funny how little everyone seems to care about this

Even if you think Chris Houston sucks, losing out on moving up to the top of the fifth round in favor of a conditional seventh rounder blows, if true.

How is that legal?

Isn’t that a bait and switch?

Rule #1: Double tap.

by Ball Hawk on Mar 25, 2010 8:43 PM EDT reply actions

Um nah

I think it is more of a “we realize how bad this guy sucks after going back and watching the tape, and after speaking with him we see how bad his attitude is about his lack of skills, so we want to give you a little bit less. We know you are okay with that, right???”

The reason we couldn't back out:

Because then we’d be stuck with a player who knew his value was a 6th round pick in the team’s eyes. Who could kill Meh if he gave <100% as a Falcon after that point?

Hope they enjoy both their wins this year.

yeah

problem is, the probably knew this all along, but I agree – once the deal was announced there was no way to back out.

how's Russia when it's not in winter conditions?

and how many Migs do you see everyday on average?

by southman on Apr 3, 2010 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Russia is pretty big

and there are places where temperature these days drops all the way to -40C (which happens to be exactly -40F), but it’s above freezing point in Moscow.

I don’t see too many MIGs around, but do run into bears drinking vodka in Moscow streets occasionally :)

wow

i like the lions, but after this…

by saipol on Mar 25, 2010 10:13 PM EDT reply actions

Seriously though...

Seems like Coach Smith most likely told the front office that he would cut Houston regardless so they might as well take anything they could get. In that case, don’t blame the Lions for slowly realizing they were trading for a total bust.

Like someone (i think it was Dave) pointed out in an earlier post

No..we didn’t move up in the 5th this year but instead of gaining a pick and swapping another one we gained 2 picks, kinda makes up for the tye hill experiement, i know its “conditional” just sayin if we do get it, and we most likely will…can you name a CB on their roster besides Meh?

Delmas, but he's a safety.

That's absolutely true.

Also, to my understanding, it could be up to a 5th round pick next year – 7th round is the lowest possible compensation.

If he failed the physical,

Then there is no trade, so this isn’t a bait and switch and I don’t think it’s shady at all. Maybe Houston showed up Grady Jackson big? Who knows or cares. The fact that they renegotiated means that Chris Houston was a camp body this year, and nothing else.

by TheAreopagite on Mar 26, 2010 6:54 PM EDT reply actions

he didnt fail the physical

the lions were saying if we dont adjust the terms we’ll make sure he fails the physical. They were saying they wanted to change the terms, the physical was just an excuse.

go hard or go home

Don’t you think a physical is arbitrary to begin with? There is no objective physical, it’s always the last part of continued negotiations. The deal isn’t done until the physical is passed, so don’t act like this deal was legally binding before they changed their minds.

by TheAreopagite on Mar 29, 2010 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Ya know ...

Was thinking about this. Could the uncapped year be to blame for the low return on Houston?

I mean, if (in theory) this draft class will be the first to endure restricted free agency for a longer period of time, doesn’t that make every draft pick that much more valuable. Hence the 3rd round pick for Boldin.

Thoughts?

see the first comment above… The guy wanst worth anything and I am sure that Detriot was the only team that offered anything at all.

Oh come on HF ...

I know you weren’t a fan of Houston or his head-turning ways, but let’s be objective here:

Houston was basically Dunta v. 2.0 last year (emphasis: if you only compare their 09/10 coverage and run defense numbers).

He wasn’t worth a ton, but we got fleeced to a degree.

Besides, my entire point was that while he might have brought a better draw a year ago, some of that could be attributable to an increase in the value of draft picks. To my understanding, if the CBA stays as is, RFAs will stay RFAs for a longer period of time, thus it makes sense that every draft pick is that much more valuable in my opinion. Sheesh.

I am not saying

that they didnt hold us over a barrel. I am saying that there wasnt much if any interest for the guy and they knew that. that is why they could get away with doing it and whey we fell for it.
