Around SBN: Champions League Preview with Jimmy Conrad

Say what you want about his size (5'10 and 230ish), his numbers at the combine were among the best for OLBs.

You have to figure that TD's attendance at GA's pro day will be a yearly occurrence, so maybe there is nothing to read into here. But any chance TD won't pull the trigger on an OLB-of-the-future until the middle rounds?

Peeeimp!

If we don’t get the Spoon we gotta get him. I’m not a GA fan but this little guy is always round the ball.

Rule #1: Double tap.

I watched a lot of games he played in

the kid was everywhere. very high motor, good character, a really solid player. as others have said, he’ll make a team happy.

Here is the best scouting report on Rennie Curran I could find

http://draftbreakdown.com/scouting-report-rennie-curran

Position: LB
School: Georgia
Height: 5′10 5/8"
Weight: 235 lbs
Class: Junior
40 time: 4.72
Overall Grade: 5.84

Draft Projection: 3rd Round

Strengths

An extremely athletic and productive LB for the Georgia Bulldogs, Curran made a name for himself as a tackling machine. He is extremely fluid and quick to the ball. He has tremendous instincts and is always around the ball to make a big stop. Has good hips and gets into his drops quickly. He has good tackling technique and always wraps up the ball carrier. Has everything you look for athletically and from a leadership standpoint (Co-captain of defense).

Weaknesses

He’s extremely undersized, to the point that he almost looks like a defensive back. He isn’t great at fighting through trash or taking on lineman. His only position is LB in the 4-3, but there are questions as to whether that’s at the Will or Mike position. Isn’t a great blitzer but he does an ok job. Didn’t make many of game-changing plays.

Analysis

If it weren’t for his size, Curran would probably be an elite prospect. But, because he’s so undersized it drops him at least a full round. He will probably make some team very happy and if he can hold up, he can be a good starter for a long time.

Obviously we can’t address all of our needs (mainly DE, OLB, and O-Line) with our first round pick, so it makes sense for the brain trust to be looking at players projected for round 3.

Two things

a) “Didn’t make many game-changing plays.” This means whoever wrote this didn’t watch a single Georgia game for the last 2 years. He won the game for Georgia a number of times, as he was the only player on defense for the last two years consistently in the right place at the right time during many games. If anything, he’s a solid contributor who will be there at the right moment to make a game saving play.

b) He’s not great in coverage. He’s not great at blitzing. He’s mainly a TE/RB coverage option, as anything more serious and he can’t cover them in the Secondary if he’s flexed to a WR (not often, but a possibility). He is great a stopping RBs cold. Low center of gravity and the guy is strong as an ox. Not a 1-3 rounder, but if he’s available in the LATE 3rd forward, I’d take him. At worst he’s a consistently good backup. See Dannelle Ellerbe on the Ravens for a model from Georgia (Rennie’s better, IMO).

Dimitroff must been cut from his High School team for being to small...

because he loves these undersized guys, I supposed its because they feel like they’ve got to prove something. But seriously, if we don’t get Spoon, the he has got to be the guy in the 3rd round.

He was the best part of the GA D.

But I can only imagine that TD is just looking cause it was convenient.

That is absolutely right

Rennie has been a human highlight reel for UGA from day one. Great insticts, hits like a truck and plays well in pass coverage. I would love to see ATL draft him and I don’t think size will be an issue for him.

Only if he plans to drop him down 20 lbs and play him at SS...

I don't see why they wouldn't scout him

He was a great college LB. Small but about the same size as Dave’s #1 all-time Falcon, Mr. Tuggle. Jesse’s playing weight is listed as 5’11 230. I can think of a few other undersized guys who had great careers too. Sometimes it just make you work harder knowing you have compensate

Great natural LB

But the 3rd round is high. His size will have him drop like a stone, so id say 4th maybe 5th round….He really has the best instincts, and tackling ability ive seen.

How is it there may be 4-5 UGA players drafted off that piss poor defense?

Hmmm...

This draft the Falcons will have the

1st Round (No. 19 overall)
3rd Round (No. 83 overall)
3rd Round (No. 98 overall)
4th Round (No. 117 overall)
5th Round (No. 149 overall)
5th Round (No. 165 overall)
6th Round (No. 171 overall)
6th Round (No. 189 overall)

If Coach Smith and the Comrade do decide to draft Curran, I wouldn’t mind us spending our 98th or 117th pick on him assuming we address our O-Line and DE needs with 19th and 83rd picks.

As for his size, people were saying the same things about Ray Lewis and Zach Thomas if I remember correctly. I’m not saying Curran is comparable to those two, but I’d put more stock into his excellent game tape than his below average physical measurable.

Because their DC was a moron.

Why do you think they canned him? They have too many good athletes on the defense to be doing as bad as they were.

UGA has always produced good pro players, for the most part. People like Hines Ward, Terrell Davis, and Ben Watson to name a few. Of course, there have been flops, as there are with any school. David Greene never lived up to his college billing (though I don’t think he got enough of a chance) Terrence Edwards never made it with the Falcons. You get what I’m saying.

I’d say that UGA alums have some of the most super bowl rings of any college, though.

mm

As much as I liked Greene in college, he wasn’t an NFL QB. He didn’t do anything besides the play-action well enough to even merit a backup spot longterm. He was a game manager in the clearest sense of the term.
