Franchise Players
As a change from the free agency/mock draft posts, I'm going to ask a question: who are the five most important players to the team right now (my opinion after the jump)? Just one catch:
They have to be with the team for the long term (four years or more).
Matt Ryan, QB-'Nuff said.
Ovie Mughelli, FB-Since Mularkey still uses a fullback, Mughelli helped keep the running game going. A very good player not likely to leave Atlanta (see 2009 season w/ Snelling at HB).
Roddy White, WR-Ryan's favorite target and continues to grow into a top-flight receiver.
Peria Jerry, DT-Helped Babineaux almost have a Pro Bowl year before getting injured. Needed run-stuffer in the middle.
Curtis Lofton, MLB-Rapidly becoming a tackling machine. Has All-Pro potential.

I like this idea, so you get a Rec
My five? Here:
QB Matt Ryan
RB Michael Turner
WR Roddy White
LB Curtis Lofton
FS Thomas DeCoud
Obviously, Tony Gonzalez is tough to leave off.

Wow, only five?
Somebody has to get snubbed, but the most important are:
QB Matt Ryan
WR Roddy White
LB Curtis Lofton
FB Ovie Mughelli
RB Michael Turner
Tony is a huge addition to the offense, but I think we could live without him (see 2008 season). Mughelli makes all the difference in the world in the run game, I think we all agree about that. And Turner changes the RB position from solid to electric. As well as Snelling did, he didn’t have that big-play tendency that Turner did, for the few games he was healthy. I didn’t include Peria Jerry because I think the jury’s still out on how big of an effect he has on the pass rush.
Couldn't agree more.

pizza?
qb matt ryan
fb ovie mughelli
lb curtis lofton
wr roddy white
rb michael turner
1st is obveous. second, w/o ovie no run game. no run game no playaction, oh..and he can catch. 3rd muderous lofton is a tackle whore. he hits hard and effective, he is the dfences anchor. 4th roddy white is a beast, but some games is non apparent ( but still a god) and a$$ burner turner is a beast but being injured last season drops him a bit. I would also like to mention show some love to elam, he did lose us two or so games last years but he won us a ass ton more last few years. see bears game two years ago. i love him he is awesome.

Fun (but I cheated)
Right now:
1. Matt Ryan
2. Roddy White
3. John Abraham
4. Jonathan Babineaux
5. Michael Turner
Long-term:
1. Matt Ryan
2. Roddy White
3. Curtis Lofton
4. Thomas DeCoud
5. Sam Baker (he better step it up a notch in ‘10, or he’s gonna move off this list)

Aside from the obvious...
I think DeCoud will be the guy. Lofton already is the guy, and a massive reason why this defnese works so well against the run, but once the secondary gets their problems wrapped up, one or two years down the road, people will point to DeCoud and see that he made it happen.
I thought we traded him to the Lions…

LOL. Nominating "Houston" as official Falcoholic replacement for "meh." All in favor say aye

How an anyone
suggesting Mughelli or Jerry?
Jerry – obviously not! he’s not played! In the same sentence you say Babineux nearly had a pro bowl year but then say Jerry’s more important to the franchise? Lets see him play first.
Mughelli – more forgiveable. But what about difficulty to replace? Of which FB is probably the easiest position on the field. Mughelli is great don’t get me wrong, but we can only pick 5 players from the entire team so it has to be the most important positions – QB (Ryan), RB (Turner), WR (White), DE(Abraham too old so switch with Babineux) and LB (Lofton)
go hard or go home
MR2. CL50, MT33, RW84, JB95
In no particular order:
Matt Ryan – you know
Curtis Lofton – the defensive signal caller and a leader by example
Michael Turner – As goes MT33, so goes the offense, usually.
Roddy White – The big play guy, and he has more fun than anyone else out there.
Jonathan Babineaux – A little small, but the most disruptive D-lineman we’ve got.
How many more days, Lord, must I walk through the wilderness?
Well, this is tough

Right now, I’d go
1) Matty Ice
2)Curtis Lofton
3) Roddy White
4) Jonathan Babineaux
5) Michael Turner
However, I think a few players will have breakout years next season and could move up:
Duffburger is due for a monster year, like 10-sack caliber will come back strong from injury and step up
-DeCoud will be in his 2nd season as a starter, he’ll get better in pass coverage
-Harry Douglas
Dunta Robinson nobody’s mentioned him but I think he’ll have a good season, plus he signed a 6 year deal

No wonder nobody's mentioned Dunta, his name keeps getting crossed out

ovie and FB not as important????!!???
look at the games he was injured. where did the run go……no run where did the play action go. he can catch the ball catching people of guard. awesome blocker. for the most part is durable. he is on the list

ya he was one of the few holdovers from the Mora/Petrino era- obviously has talent and is a top-tier FB
