Hat Contest Winner #1 - TO Falcon

The first winner of the Defend the Dome Hard Hat contest is TO falcon! He hails all the way from that glorious land of "futbol," fish and chip shops, and Indian takeaway; the UK! Here's why he's a Falcon fan:

"Being from the UK, its not an easy feat becoming tangled up in the web of hope and despair that is, the life of an Atlanta Falcons fan. My first exposure to the sport through a friend (Skins fan) who I often played Madden with. Being a teenage kid at the time, anything that made me different and helped forge my identity was welcomed (remember its the UK, I was 1 of 2 people I knew who liked the sport). The thirst for more drove me to actually play for a local youth team and I started cruising the web for something other than porn, and found other fans to converse with - like you guys!

However, I was yet to pick a team. It wasn't until September, 10 2006 when I watched my now beloved, Atlanta Falcons, beat the Carolina Panthers 20-6 at the Bank of America Stadium, North Carolina. That game I fell in love with the team asVick wowed me, Dunn gained 132 yards rushing and Abraham dominated their O-Line. From that day, I was a UK Falc. Knowing myself as a 16/17 year old kid at the time, I knew full well that it could have just been a phase.

But, 4 years down the line i'm more committed than ever. Having seen 6 NFL teams play live at the International Series in London, i'm saving for that all important first trip to the Dome! I don't think some American fans understand how difficult it can be following the Falcons from here. The TV coverage has improved vastly, however, its dominated by the Cowboys, Patriots and now the Saints. I have to cruise the internet (I do this a lot...) for links to streams and watch on a tiny netbook until the link ultimately breaks and the search is on again. For Monday Night Football, this means watching from 1am to 4am GMT and getting up for work 4 hours later. Then, starved of coverage, I find myself reading any online content I can find to get my fix of Falcon news. This doesn't even factor in the hundreds of dollars i've spent on shipping merchandise over to the UK so that I can show my support.

Why do I do this I hear you ask. Why? Just like love, you dont have a choice. You may not like it/them, but you know you love it/them. The early disappointments only served to endear me to the team. Just like when you first fall in love, that snoring is so beautiful. Going through the Petrino era felt like a baptism of fire that left me forged close to the heart. I felt more desperate for the Falcons to break a virtually meaningless back to back streak more than I want my own British teams to win anything. American football does this to a person. 16 games a year instead of 7,000,000 like Baseball (sorry Dave). Every one matters, therefore as a fan, you feel like your opinion and voice matters.

Why do I support Atlanta Falcons? Because i'm in Love. I'm in love with a girl thats unreliable, unrelenting, bad for my health and causes me nothing but stress and heartache. But would I change her for any other girl in the league? Hell no. I'm in love with the Atlanta Falcons. And shes cheating on me with all of you but I don't care...as long as I can watch you."

yours is great, I bid you, a congradulations

That was an interesting read

I’ll send you my 98 superbowl t-shirt with the Morton Annderson kicking the winning FG against Minn too for that bit of inspiration. Maybe save some money on all that over priced NFL apparrel. You can pick it up at Target here for practically nothing in the off-season (warning: the tee shirt does have a few coffee stains).

The story did get a little weird towards the end…I think we all now know that TO likes to watch. Thats ok…whatever ever gets you through the night… Glad you’re a Falcons fan. It shows character.

Congrats TO Falcon

Good story.

Good job, dude!

Great story, and it’s good to hear there’s another British Falcoholic out there who feels the same pain at the lack of coverage the Falcs get over here. One other option you could try is subscribing to NFL Gamepass instead of searching for streams every week – but it’s expensive and the performance is still pretty patchy.

Oh, and definitely keep saving for a trip to the Dome – I was lucky enough to go this year and it was an amazing experience. If you’re lucky (and bribe him with imported marmalade), you might even be able to get tloz to show you around.

Also, have you got your tickets yet for the 2010 International Series this autumn? 49ers v Broncos is kind of a meh matchup in my opinion, but it’s always a great occasion. Maybe see you at the so-called “tailgate”…

Sounds great!

Got my tickets despite the apparent decline in interest. Been all 3 so it seemed a shame to stop now! You register at NFLUK forums?

I haven't registered there yet, no...

Are the UK forums any good? I tend to get all my NFL news either here or on the ESPN Fantasy site…

Just curious

How do you find streams of NFL games? I assume its a pirated feed someone with more technical know how than me knows how to steal?

As a rule, I don’t trust people who know more about technology than me (pretty much everyone under 40:)…I’d be so nervous they downloaded some back door on my computer sending out all my bank accts and such to every hacker in the 3rd world, I wouldn’t be able to follow the game

by zooker on Feb 5, 2010 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

There are certain sites that stream, via Flash based video (YouTube esque)

Other people’s recorded input (hooking a cable box up to a computer). It’s not that hard to do, actually. The issue is the websites have popup ads and background scripts that have a habit of installing spyware/adware on your machine without your permission.

You have opinions. We all do. Some of yours may have to do with the Falcons. Sign up today and share them.

I guess I just have trust issues...

You know the whole theres no free lunch thing. I’m also surprised the NFL rottweillers (I mean lawyers) don’t pursue these people. It is copyrighted content after all. I recently read a church in Indianapolis got sued by them for showing the 07 super bowl on a wide screen…this seems like a much bigger deal

by zooker on Feb 5, 2010 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

Fair Play

Its the people who put the streams up that get in trouble with the law. Not the viewers.
If the NFL didnt make their Gamepass so expensive then Id happily pay, but theres also issues with not having fast enough internet for a good official feed.

Falcons coverage in Europe

ESPN America is – I think – opearting out of London, and their Europe-feed (which I’ve heard is slightly different from the UK feed but mostly the same regarding the NFL) allowed me to see a lot of Falcons games this season, that is inlcuding ad-free as-live coverage the day after the game was played. In true live coverage they showed the night games CHI and NO, and for sure DAL and NYG too. (I think NE, CAR (1st meet), NYJ, PHI, and the other NO-game were all shown as ad-free as-live the next day.) Not bad, if you ask me, but yeah, sometimes one has to hunt for streams. :)

by wiesengrund on Feb 5, 2010 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

Huh

I just realized that ESPN America actually had no NFL on their UK feed. Seems like my info was majorly wrong, apologies.

good stuff

well, up until the creepy as long as I can watch thing at the end…. LOL!

As another UK based Falcons fan, I certainly understand your plight of having to stay up late to watch games and hunting for streams.

Very inspiring

I’m relating what you go through to what it would be like to be in the states as a fan of, say AC Milan. Sounds like a daily grind that belies a ton of dedication.

Its worth it

although some people, girls especially, dont seem to understand why you want to stay in on a sunday night and “watch the game”. Bit like if any of you guys told your mates you cant come out, its the Rugby game tonight!

I've got one question,

How did the NFL get to British T.V. anyway?

by southman on Feb 6, 2010 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know when it started

But there’s been some kind of NFL coverage on UK TV for quite a few years now. I guess maybe it all kicked off during the NFL Europe period?

Nowadays, a few of the British networks tend to bid for the broadcasting rights… currently, Sky Sports (which is our biggest cable/satellite sports network) has the rights to the regular season and playoff games, while the BBC is showing the Super Bowl.

by Ignoramus on Feb 7, 2010 5:42 AM EST up reply actions

UK rugby made it to American TV

The England vs Wales rugby match was on Saturday morning on BBC America. I had no idea what was going but it was pretty entertaining..especially since it was cold and raining anyway and Scooby Doo isn’t on then anymore

by zooker on Feb 8, 2010 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

Haha!

That was a scrappy game, I was watching the first half in the pub.

by Ignoramus on Feb 8, 2010 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

Started in the 80's on Free To Air TV

and in the last 5 years Sky Sports has done a great job on showing 3-6 games a week.
