Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Potentially talented pass rusher? Check. Knows Curtis Lofton? Check? Actually seems excited about playing for the Falcons? Check. Likely available at 19? Check.

We can debate whether an outside linebacker is really the best fit for the Falcons, but how cool is it to see guys who have a real interest in coming to Atlanta?

honestly

the comrade would have to go way off the reservation for me to get upset with who they go with in the 1st, like a TJ Duckett type pick…but i would love to get this kid, after watching him play at the senior bowl he seems to be a great addition

Arizona S Rolle free agent

What u think? We need a corner but he would be a great addition. He was a pro bowl alternate this year

Any pick on Defense is a good one.

Safety probably is the one place we might not need help. But all in all this would be a great addition.

Handful of guys I wouldn't mind picking...

Weatherspoon
Graham
K. Wilson

Perhaps C.J. Spiller

One of the redikulus top guys, should they fall to us.

Oh, and who could forget Mardy Gilyard!

I'm almost rooting for Gilyard to be drafted at this point

Funny thing is, I am too.

We’ve been brainwashed!

He does seem like a nice guy, though.

Oh the power of the brand.

It will soon infect a large majority of the greater ATL area and soon spread to all major cities where Delta flies.

In honor of him, I shall change my name

to….

seanweatherspoonactual1stfalconspick.

but in all seriousness, i would not be against drafting gilyard in the mid rounds, if he indeed makes it there.

question

I have a theoretical question. as far as I know, an outside LB is a position somewhere between DE and CB – is that right? assuming we’re drafting this guy to fill the void in our pass-rushing corps, can someone explain which type of pass rush is more effective – a DE rushing or a LB?

if...

your running a 4-3 and can get a pass rush with just your front 4 is always best(think the Giants in the SB against the Pats) drop the rest the guys in coverage, could have a blitz crazy 4-3 like they run in Philly and then its whoever the blitz is designed to get free so it could be anybody, then there’s the 3-4 where your OLB is just an undersized DE who is fast off the corner like what Dallas runs, for us(ATL) it would ideal to just rush our front 4 and if not a sack just get pressure and make a bad throw or throw it away, traditionally you don’t want to give the QB more than 3 seconds to throw and that was our problem we were giving them 6 and 7 seconds to throw(thats all day on a football field) and i don’t care how good your CBs are they can’t cover an NFL reciever for that long. i think i answered your question

by gritzblitz on Mar 1, 2010 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

thanks, you've answered my question pretty much

so, since our team run a 4-3 defense, ideally we’d want only the front 4 to pressure the QB and have the linebackers drop into coverage. from this point a pass rushing OLB looks odd.

pretty much

thats why it would be odd to draft somebody like sergio kindle, about 20 lbs to small to be a DE and didn’t play any coverage in college so he can’t really be 4-3 OLB

by gritzblitz on Mar 2, 2010 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

that's not to say

he couldn’t learn to play coverage but you really don’t want to use your 1st rounder on a project

This just shows how far we've come as a franchise.

I’d love for us to pick Weatherspoon. If we did, we’d be set at LB for the next 10 years, easily.

He’s not the most athletic guy out there, but the kid plays with so much passion and heart it could energize a defense. He’s very vocal and has the qualities of a leader. He’s pretty much a young Mike Peterson personality-wise.

We couldn’t go wrong if we picked him. He also had a nice INT in the senior bowl.

this one from the Jags blog

http://www.bigcatcountry.com/2010/3/11/1368521/with-the-19th-pick-in-the-2010-nfl

one of them says Falcons might have already expressed their interest in this guy, so it might be a safe bet to say we’re going after Weatherspoon in the 1st round.

Spoon is a good one

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
