Football Outsiders' Four Downs: NFC South
This is FBO's first installment of their off-season series for teams in the NFC South, pointing out possible areas of need, key players that could leave, and Free Agents that could be targeted. It's not anything we haven't discussed here plenty, but it's fun to get an idea of what knowledgeable national analysts think of our Falcons. Bill Barnwell is the writer for this edition, and he pulls no punches (hint: he's not very kind to Grimes).

Seriously?
Cutting dire cornerback Brent Grimes is one of the most obvious moves an NFL team has to make this offseason.
Nobody has a comment on this?
While I don’t agree with Barnwell on this, I also don’t think 6 INT’s puts him in the driver’s seat for a starting spot, given the missed tackles, and (especially) how other teams tried to attack him. According to PFF (sort by the TA tab), he was tied for 15th most targets last year, even though most of the guys above him were on the field for 200-250 more snaps.
Also, there was a pretty good discussion in the comments of the Four Downs link about how to value ($$) different players. They were talking specifically about whether the Saints should use the Franchise Tag on Safety Darren Sharper (they did not).

I'm getting awfully tired of this argument
Statistically, you’ll see that our corners were average to below average last year. There’s no way around that. But everyone keeps parroting that the Falcons need a cornerback, which in my opinion completely ignores the real “dire” need: A Goddamn pass rush.
Quarterback pressures are good. They can screw up a guy’s timing and force him to make a bad throw. But they’re no substitute for sacks, which demoralize a team, drive them back a few years and pump up a defense. For much of last year, we were plenty capable of getting some kind of pressure but couldn’t close on it, and that’s something we need to address. I’m a firm believer that a quality defense starts on the line, and Grimes could do what he does best (freelance a little) if he didn’t have to hang with his guy for 15-20 seconds.
And hell, maybe the pass rush will improve without us touching it this year. I just think it’s incredibly stupid to dump a guy who at the very least is an asset at the nickel.

Didn’t mean to get you so fired up there, Dave…

Sorry
Nothing riles me up more than experts who offer a defensible opinion that’s different than my own. Grr!
