Falcons-Panthers Series History

Hi,

I'm still trying to catch my breath after last week's game, here's the latest installment of the weekly series that covers the Falcons 2010 opponents. This week, the Panthers. The Falcons lead the series, 18-12, going back to 1995. The Falcons won that first encounter at the Georgia Dome, 23-20 in OT. Only a sign of things to come in this series. There has been some great games, and some duds. But these teams usually play 'em close. Here's my favorite games: 1998 @ the dome: Falcons score 21 points in 48 seconds to stuff and mount the Panthers, 51-23. The two shut out games on 2002 were also satisfying, and the 2003 encounter at the dome with Vick returning from injury, and the birds were able to win, 20-14 in OT on an interception of a Jake Delhomme pass for a TD. The 2004 game at the dome may be in fact the best game of the series for us Falcon fans. Falcons dominate early, only to have the Panthers come back and take the lead, then have Vick save our butts to send the game into OT, and another interception of a Jake Delhomme pass set up the winning FG by Jay Feely, 34-31. 2004 was the last sweep of the Panthers by the Falcons. Since 2006, the teams have spilt the eight meetings. This will change this year as the Panthers are playing out the string with a lame duck coaching staff, and the uncertainty of the organization's status as a whole. It will be cool and rainy on Sunday, but I see the Falcons finally having a breather game for once. We're due, for God's sake, 38-10! The Falcons will not take these guys lightly, I guarantee it! Will be back next week with the final bird match up of the regular season against the Seahawks.
