Now, since the bye week is now beyond us, it's time for the next installment of the 2010 Falcons opposition. This week, it's the Bucs. Arrrrggghhh!!
The series dates back to 1977, the Bucs lead the series, 18-15, with the Falcons currently riding a three game winning streak against the Jolly Rogers. The 1977 meeting was won by the Falcons, 17-0, adding to (at that time) the misery of the 26 game losing streak. The game was famous for one of John McKay (love this guy and miss him) was that was going to have the team go out there naked to try to distract the Falcons from playing the game so they could get an advantage. It wouldn't of worked anyway with that horrible squad. The series overall has been a back and forth affair with some pretty good games. Low points for me was the 1981 tilt when the Bucs scored with little or no time left thanks to Doug Williams, 24-23. Both 2002 games, when Warren Sapp and Co had some kind of bounty on Michael Vick, and the lowest of lows came in 2005, when the birds lost both games (both winnable). The first came in the ATL when the Falcons were driving to seal the game, when Vick and Warrick botched a hand off, and goobhead Chris Simms then lead them down the field, to win, 30-27, and the second one in Tampa, when both squads had a chance to win in OT, but lost, 27-24, knocking the birds out of the playoff race, and coach Mora on his cell phone during OT going over playoff scenarios. Those two games were the difference in making the playoffs that year, and the Bucs went on to sink in the playoffs. The best games for me was the 1991 43-7 blasting and the 1992 Wade Wilson (remember him?) led 35-7 pounding. My all time favorite is the final game of last season where the birds finally got the back to back winning seasons, 20-10 in Tampa. Sunday should see the continuation of the winning streak against the Bucs, and the home streak and dominance. It's one of those NFC South affairs, you know. It should be entertaining. Falcons are due for a big one here. Next week, the post will either be on Monday or Tuesday because of the Thursday night game, Bird Bowl 3, against the Ravens.
