SB Nation Atlanta Editor's Pick
Ask a Packer Fan!
Hello Falcon fans! I'm Jabooty from Acme Packing Company here to reach out and answer any questions you may have about the Packers. This may be one of the biggest games in the year as this game may very well determine who will get home field advantage in the playoffs. I'm looking forward to a good one. If the Packers win, we will hold the tie breaker over both Philadelphia and Atlanta. If Atlanta wins, you have a 2 game lead over us and a tie breaker. Big game for both of us.
I think we made history this past Sunday, so watch out Mike Smith. We got 2 opposing Head Coach's fired 2 games in a row (not counting the bye week). Ok, I kid, I kid. Mike Smith has nothing to fear. In fact, we do. Matt Ryan's home record of 18-1 is remarkable! He's nearly unbeatable at home. So I'm looking forward to a great game between 2 solid teams. I watched 2 Falcon games this year: against Baltimore and against St. Louis. I'm very impressed with your offense. Most notably, the 3rd down conversions, the balance, and the rhythm. The offense seems to click on short timed passing routes and a solid running game. The right side of your Offensive Line featues a couple run blocking maulers and do their job very well. They will lining up against BJ Raji, Ryan Pickett, and Clay Mathews out of the base packages. When you spread the field, it will be Raji and Mathews in our Nickel Packages. I'm assuming we'll be playing out of the Nickel the most in this game while you have TE Tony Gonzalez. Would you say that's all a fair analysis of your offense?
Now to open up some questions. What is the best way to beat your offense? St. Louis seemed focused on stopping Micheal Turner, and did well. However, that didn't stop Matt Ryan and the passing attack. Also, I'm not familiar with your defense. Are they best against the run or pass? Who should we watch out for? Who are your best defenders (assuming Abraham is out)?
Now you can feel free to ask as many questions about the Packers as you want. The most common question that we get: How is your team holding up with all the injuries? The answer: Dom Capers and Aaron Rodgers. Our defense was hit hard with the most injuries, but Capers has kept the unit strong. Our offense lost a couple starters, but Rodgers is maintaining. It caused for a slightly less productive season, but he's still producing and I'm not worried.
Please recommend this post so it's up all week. Thanks guys!

The Front 4 needs to apply pressure
Most noticably from the DT’s. When the DE’s start getting pressure or if you blitz, Rodgers likes to roll out to extend the play. If your DT’s get a push, Rodgers may panic. That is of course if the DE’s can pressure or contain him. Keep Rodgers in the pocket with good pressure, and your defense stands a chance.

We're a bend don't break defense
This season, I believe we’re 6th against the run so we’re quite solid there. However we’re definitely at the back end for pass defense, which can be an issue sometimes, but then again our secondary has lead the league in INTs at various stages (i think we’d be second behind Philly following Sunday).
And honestly, I’d be hugely surprised if Abraham didn’t play, the fact that he was inactive at the Rams surprised me a lot. He’s been on the injury report for pretty much his entire time with the Falcons, but he always suits up.
Check out this week's Falcons best case/worst case article here.

I'd be interested to see what our Red Zone numbers are concerning the D.
TD’s against, at that. We let teams into the red zone quite often, but we are much better at defending the shorter field.

Why am I thinking of the Packers@Cardinals playoff game?
by brotherbrown on Nov 22, 2010 10:05 PM EST up reply actions
That doesn't put your defense in good odds against us then
We are a Pass First Offense. We’ll run the ball at a maximum of 20 attempts using various RBs: John Kuhn (to pound it), Brandon Jackson (a little more speed), and who you are all familiar with Dimitri Nance (to change it up). Nance finally got a chance to show his stuff against the Vikings, and I liked what I saw. Hopefully he’ll continue to get more opportunities. Jackson is a 3rd Down HB specialist, so we like to limit his attempts so we can better utilize his skills on 3rd downs. He’s a good blocker, has good speed, and has good hands.

Yea I was among those Falconites who hated to see Nance get cut
I certainly wasn’t surprised to see him scooped up quickly. As far as your comment about GB being in the nickel most of the game, I have mixed feelings about it: on the one hand, it appears to be playing to our strengths, and you might see Turner have a big day. On the other hand, Ryan has become so adept at his pre-snap reads and such that HE has actually become the key to keeping our offense rolling. So in a nutshell, scheming us that way could backfire or could slow up Matty Ice & Co. enough to pay pretty big dividends for you. Here’s one guy hoping for the former.

I'm looking forward to this test
Matt Ryan will be the best QB we faced this season. We really haven’t been tested by elite QB’s, and Ryan is the closest there is to that level, if not there already. That was one of our problems last year in the couple games where our D was carved up in pieces. On the contrary, we lost a couple key players on D and lacked depth in the secondary. This year, CB Tramon Williams is our BEST cover corner. Even better than Woodson. Woodson is still the best overal CB with his instincts for the ball and run stopping ability though. It’s a smart secondary, so I hope they can key in on Ryan. The audibles Ryan may use in fact will probably put our young LB’s on its heels. If this game is close, your playaction may be our doom as you draw in our LBs, even our 3rd and 4th CB’s.
"No player is greater than a team."
-Vince Lombardi
I gotta admit. . .
I get a little giddy when a fan of another team (especially one with an elite QB of their own) gives props like that to our beloved Matty. I, like a lot of others, reacted dubiously to the choice of Ryan at #3; needless to say we’re happy to have been wrong. But the standard MO of defensive coordinators up to now has been stop the run & make him beat us, and more often than not this season he’s been happy to oblige. So I would be curious to see how he’d handle a different approach, especially from a defense as talented as the Pack’s. Just think this’ll be a great matchup, and I can’t wait til Sunday. In the meantime, Happy Thanksgiving to cheeseheads & falcoholics alike.

I show respect when it’s deserved. I think Matt Ryan it worthy enough to have it. I will admit that I also opposed the Falcons selection of him. I thought your team was in shambles and you’d be better drafting DT Glenn Dorsey. Uh-huh. I was spot on with that one, right? I didn’t think Ryan would be a bust, but he’d kind of be Jay Cutler 2.0, and I felt you could get a better QB in the following draft. I was just a tab bit off in that prediction… I’m happy when players prove me wrong. Ryan is eager for success. I know a lot of times Ryan and Rodgers get compared, which I hate. Through all that, I’ll admit it, I was a bit envious that we didn’t have a running game to support Rodgers. I still wish we had a better running game, but with our weapons in the WR corp and when Finley is on the field healthy, I can’t complain too much. I’m interested to see how your defense prepares as well. Will they focus on just stopping Rodgers? If so, that could, again, “could” open up some running lanes for us. We’ll see though. I’m looking forward to this game.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and everyone else as well. Unfortunately for me, I don’t get turkey this year. I live in South Korea now, no Thanksgiving here. I’m just thankful I don’t live like North Koreans. God I pitty those people….

sorry you are so far away
hopefully you can watch games.
I wasn’t hot about the Ryan pick until about a few hours or so prior.
I too felt that an equal or greater QB could be selected later, and we could ride the wave with Shockley and Redman as Redman showed promise at the end of 2007.
However I knew they were going to pick him after the Rachel Nichols report and simply embraced it, and it worked out.

07' Offseason and no biggie....
Well, it was my choice career wise. I still watch many games played each week and the NFL Network on the net. It comes at a price, but it keeps me in the loop of everything. Thus being how I watched your Falcons play twice this year.
The draft is a risk as you know, and you nailed it with Ryan. I really wanted HB Michael Turner in that offseason though. God I knew he would do big things. That offseason was huge for you, Mike Smith, and the Falcons organization.
"No player is greater than a team."

even after we got turner
pundits still said we were goint to have a 2 win season at best.
I wasn’t expect an 11 winn 2008 but I though we had a shot at 4-6 wins that year.

I still didn't think the Bucs were going to be awful
I though they had a decent shot at 6 to 8 wins at worse. But they’ve held true for the NFC South Anomaly.
Watch out for the Panthers next year. Especially if they win at least 2 more games this year (Seahawks and Cardinals?).

i knew after the first couple of preseason games
that the falcons would have a big year. Seeing turner run was the biggest because we haven’t had that in a while. Our team wasn’t that messed up like everyone claimed just because Vick wasn’t there. Their identity was kinda messed up and that was the problem when Vick was there too.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
That's what I thought too
I kept seeing Turner break long ones in preseason. I knew he was going to be huge. I don’t think I seen such consistent big plays in preseason or regular season…so I drafted him second after drew brees in fantasy.

To answer the question, "What is the best way to beat your offense?"
Controlling the line of scrimmage, getting penetration, against both the run, and the pass. Atlanta has too many weapons to account for, and play a very balanced style of offense, so trying to cover all the options is nigh impossible. Pressuring Ryan, and getting a hand on Turner behind the line is key, and Mularky (OC) seems to be allergic to the screen pass.
So my question, in return. What is the weakest link in the Packer defense?
That's a good question
The best answer I can give you is the depth. We have experienced many injuries, but our backups are playing insanely well. Guys like S Charlie Peprah and ILB Desmond Bishop are making a name for themselves. I think the depth issue is more focused on the Defensive Line though. Our secondary is pretty good. If you spread us out, you are likely to have a better chance at exposing them though. Our LB’s are playing well too, which obviously includes Clay Matthews. The defensive line is also a menace when the starters are in. DE Cullen Jenkins is our 2nd best pass rusher. NT BJ Raji is playing like a Pro Bowler. He applies so much pressure up the middle. If this team played in New York, you’d see nothing but Clay and Raji highlights non stop.
I think Ryan’s ability to get rid of the ball quickly works in your favor though. If you spread us out and use TE Tony Gonzalez, you will likely have some success against our defense. Your offense tends to do that as it is, so I’m sure you will score some points. Nickel CB Sam Shields is playing very well, but often times he goes un-tested due to the pressure from our pass rush. When we start rotating, it’s probably your best chance at striking us.

To answer your questions about our defense
We are a run stopping, ball hawking defense. We do not have big guys, we have fast guys. We stop the run first and worry about the pass later- with the hope of getting interceptions or causing fumbles after the receivers catch the ball – we try to steal possessions from opposing offenses as much as we can. Our key defensive players are – Abraham – he sat out versus Rams just to get rest and heal up, JUST SO HE COULD CHASE RODGERS ALL DAY SUNDAY!! Rookie linebacker Weatherspoon, is coming back from injury and played versus the rams some, he should be back to full strength this Sunday, he’s better at pass coverage than run stopping, but is above average at both.We also have Lofton at MLB – awesome tackling machine, and of course Robinson at #1 CB, who will try and slow down Jennings I hope.
Theres a brief summary.
How about your D, other than Mathews of course???

Questions and Answers
How good are your Defensive Tackles at pass rushing? I know how beastly Abraham can be. He’s certainly a menace. If your DT’s can get a good push, this is not something I’m looking forward too. I must clarify that LT Chad Clifton has quietly been having one of the best seasons of his career, but he’ll give 1 up every now and then.
Speaking of OT’s and Clay Matthews, how good is your RT at pass blocking? How good is your OL all together at pass blocking? I know they are among the best OL units in run blocking, but what about pass protection?
Presure will come from all different angles. Clay Matthews plays on the left side, so he’ll be in Ryan’s face all day. He does get moved around from time to time though. DE Cullen Jenkins usually plays on the right side, although he too sometimes gets moved to the left side. BJ Raji does an incredible job when he’s in strict pass rush mode. He will collapse the pocket. However, he will only do that assuming your offense is obviously going to pass. If you keep a good balance with Turner, you will do a good job in keeping Jenkins and Raji in check. ILB Desmond Bishop is also a playmaker. He’s a hard hitter and just seems to make big plays often. He used to be inconsistent, which was why he was a backup. This year, he has been spectacular for us. When you spread us out, Charles Woodson moves to the slot. Sometimes to even cover good TE’s, which he’ll likely cover Gonzalez. He will also blitz, so Ryan needs to watch out. Oh, and tell your ball carriers to hold on tight. Sir Charles Woodson has a tendancy to knock it out.

Answers and Questions
At DT: Jonathan Babineaux is fantastic @ 3-tech. He is very good against the run, and he led the team in Sacks last year. Possibly the best defensive player on the team… the other DT spot is a rotation. Rookie Corey Peters starts, and is replaced (usually in passing situations) by 2009 first round pick Peria Jerry. He is just starting to round back into form after missing almost all of last season with a knee injury. Also in the mix is second year player Vance Walker, but he’s used more in run-stuffing situations. Each has shown flashes, but none of those 3 really stands out.
RT Tyson Clabo is good, but not great in pass protection. He has allowed 4 sacks so far this year. He’s a former Guard, so he’s more of a grinder. Overall, the O-Line is adequate at pass protection. They’ve only allowed 15 sacks total, but Matt Ryan and OC Mike Mularkey help them out a lot – a bunch of short routes, and Ryan generally has good awareness & gets rid of the ball on time. When they do want to dial up a deep ball, they’ll usually go max protect.
So if pressure from our DT’s is a weakness, who is the weak link on your interior OL? I was under the impression that Josh Sitton was having a good year. Is that true?
Also, what the heck has happened to Donald Driver? Has age finally caught up to him, or will he be OK once he gets close to 100%? If we quadruple-team Greg Jennings (I’m only half-joking), who else can hurt us in the passing game? James Jones and Jordy Nelson don’t “scare” me – am I wrong to doubt them?

Answers and Question
Does Peria Jerry look to show good potential? I’ve been meaning to ask about him. What are his strengths and weaknesses as a DT?
I like what I’m hearing about your RT. I think Clay Mathews could have a big day. That is if the secondary keys in on the short routes. This is kind of a game I where former Packer Al Harris would really be an asset for us. I’m assuming press coverage by our CB’s would be the best option. Obviously we have to stop Turner and your running game. So far we have done an excellent job of that when we had enough defensive linemen. Don’t be fooled by the stats, that’s mostly by Vick, Cutler, and other mobile QB’s. I know Ryan is certainly capable of running himself. I hope we can keep that in check too.
Josh Sitton is our best offensive lineman. He doesn’t get Pro Bowl votes because he doesn’t get a lot of exposure playing in Green bay and because last year he was playing on an overall bad OL. He was solid last year and is very good this year. Our weakest link in the middle…..I’m sure you’ll get mixed responses on this one. In the past, it used to be the LG Darryn Colledge as he was so inconsistent. However, he has done a decent job so far this year. My pick is C Scott Wells. He’s undersized, isn’t the best at run blocking, and will get severely beat against the better DT’s and NT’s in the league. I’m hoping we can upgrade the Center position next offseason.
I wouldn’t say that quite yet. He has certainly gotten up there in age, but he is so strong and well fit that I don’t think he’s done yet. He just had an injury that sidelined him for a few games this year. He has his drops in there too when in, but he is an asset to our offense even at his age. So once he’s 100% again, I would say he’ll be just fine. James Jones is probably our most inconsistent WR. However, he is one of our best playmaking WR’s. He really does seem to get the big plays for us and is very good in getting YAC. Sometimes he dissapears though as he’ll get the “drop-itis” syndrom. Nelson has underrated downfield speed, but isn’t quick off the snap. He’s strictly a possession WR with good size. He doesn’t have many highlight plays, but that doesn’t mean he’s not doing his job. He’s good to look for on 3rd downs given his size and he is clearly our best run blocking WR. Rodgers does a good job of spreading the ball around, so I’d shadow Jennings (his favorite target now with Finley out for the year) and also keep HB Brandon Jackson in check. Jackson is a reliable option in the passing game. All our WR’s are good though, so I wouldn’t overlook any of them. This offense can be scary good.

more answers and questions
Jerry is fairly solid at both aspects, run-stopping and pass-rushing. Personally, I’m still waiting for him to come out of his shell and be a real pass-rush threat. That may mean I have more expectations for him than others, but I still have high hopes for him.
I would be careful thinking about press coverage. Everyone can see Rowdy Roddy can use his hands, and against press coverage, it’s perfectly legal. Harry Douglas has the speed to burn guys if they play him too tight, if he can get their hands off of him quickly. I would also, sometimes I can’t believe I’m saying this, watch out for Brian Finneran. Seeming old enough to be Brett Favre’s grandfather hasn’t messed with this guy one bit. He will certainly not wow you in any way. But damn, he has a knack for making the right play. That includes doing little things, like making plays on special teams, making the extra block. Oh yeah, and a great red zone target. I can’t believe I just said so much about Brian Finneran, actually. I guess he’s more useful than I thought.
How big are screens in your offense? I feel like we have been pretty open to being beat by screens, and it seems Brandon Jackson is the kind of guy that could do it.
Lastly, could you talk about your safeties? Do you see a lot of help coming from the top on Roddy White? Or will your blitz packages end up leaving him with some one-on-one coverage? For your sake, I’d put all 11 and the coach on him and hope for the best.
It’ll be interesting how Dom Capers tries to defend your offense then. It makes things a little difficult when Matt Ryan can get rid of the ball so quickly.
Surprisingly, screens are rarely called. It has been picking up slowly in recent weeks though. As in, every now and then you’ll see one. I wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t see it this Sunday though. McCarthy is allergic to screens. What Jackson does do is sneak out for the dumpoff if called upon. He may chip one of your linemen in the process, he may not. Just think of Minnesota’s offense last year. These are the same plays Chester Taylor was so effectively used in.
There’s FS Nick Collins who is a Pro Bowler. I’m sure you’re familiar with him, so I’ll skip him. We have backup SS Charlie Peprah starting now because starter Morgan Burnett is out for the season. Peprah has played very well since coming in. He’s a good run stopper and is sound in pass coverage. He will blow his assignment from time to time, but he has been playing good this season. Former starter Atari Bigby is slowly getting into the swing of things. He was put on the PUP this year, and now he’s rotating in and out with Peprah on occasion. I heard he was injured again though, not sure on his status for this Sunday. We also have backup Anthony Smith, but he plays just Special Teams for the time being. No, I don’t expect them to help on Roddy White much. Our CB’s have done so well this season that they haven’t had to yet. I expect them to protect us from the deep ball. If adjustments need to be made, I’m sure it will be. However, don’t expect any quick adjustments from our defense. This is also a bend and don’t break defense that gets a lot of turnovers.

Will Woodson...
shadow White on the field or do you think that they will maintain the corners staying to their respective sides of the field regardless of where Roddy lines up?
Also do you guys still run mostly a single back/3 wide set or do you use more I form and pro sets?
by Falcons Fan in WA on Nov 23, 2010 4:49 PM EST reply actions
Woodson plays strictly LCB in the base formation as he is our best run stopping CB. He’s our best overall CB given his instincts for the ball, run stopping abilities, and solid coverage abilities. Often times when opponents spread the fields with 3+ WR’s, Woodson will move into the slot, where he can blitz or cover. I’d expect to see him on TE Tony Gonzalez and Roddy White a number of times in this game.
Tramon Williams is our best cover corner. No, seriously, he is. You probably haven’t heard about him, and that’s fine. If only he wouldn’t drop so many easy interceptions he’d make the highlight reels in every game. So you can say his hands are definately questionable. However, he will knock it down and he does his job.
Sam Shiels is our Nickel Back. He’s an undrafted rookie this year guys. Oh, and he’s also playing very well. He’s our fastest player, who ran a 4.2 40 yard dash. Often times he doesn’t get tested due to our pass rush, but he’ll lose his man from time to time. He relies on his speed to catch up though, so that’s a tremendous asset.
We will mix it up, but usually we run with 3 WR’s, 1 TE, and 1 HB. So, single back formation.

If coach Smith does not double team Mathews on every passing down then he is insane!! I might even triple team him by having the RB chip him too on his way out for the check down pass. Seriously, I would shut down mathews and make the rest of that d-line beat me. As long as we don’t have to worry about mathews the whole game, then I think Matt will have a great day, but if mathews is getting pressure and god forbid sacks on Ryan then Matty does get happy feet sometimes and he gets generous with the football!!

we need to run draw plays
but I don’t think our offense knows what that is…
except for when redman ran one with Norwood for a TD Nov 29 2009

That has already been tried
Trust me, it doesn’t work. For starters, Clay is so fast and smooth, that he still manages to beat double teams. Secondly, you’re just asking for trouble because Raji and Jenkins are relentless pass rushers as well.
Draw plays are doomed from the beginning everytime. This works to Clay’s speed and smarts.
Your best chance is to keep pounding it at him and using quick passing routes. It’s basically what your offense is already doing, it’s just that they have to do it again against us to perfection.

actually, can we try this??
How about running right at mathews? Maybe this is the best way to wear him down, Run at him with a lead FB or a pulling guard in front of Turner, therefore they pound on mathews all game long, then when we run away from him, he’ll be glad and won’t give backside pursuit. who knows, could work, what do you think? Has any team tried this yet?

Yes
That’s likely your best option, run it at him. He’s pretty good in run coverage too, but the Falcons strong side is beastly at run blocking. It’s likely your best option as I mentioned above. When you run away, it depends upon his assignment. Sometimes he’ll stay put to play a contain and eliminate the cutback or he’ll be in pursuit. There’s a popular highlight reel shown often on the Packers where Clay sacked Trent Edwards of the Bills. This is kind of an example of it. He was playing a contain defense where Trent did a Playaction to the left side, Clay recognized it right away and was full speed ahead to Trent, who never had time to even turn around and see him coming.
Um, teams have tried it. Not sure exactly how stubborn they were. It seems a lot of times it was just abandoned. Minnesota tried it, but Clay beat it. I didn’t watch the Jets game, but I know that was a lot of running. We shut them out, so that’s saying something. I think that is likely your best option though given it’s where your strength is. If you add in some passes too to keep us off balance, you’ll move the chains. Remember, the Jets had/have the #1 rushing attack in the league, and we shut it down.

I'm optimistic
I honestly don’t know and can see it going either way. The 18-1 record scares me. Your offense frightens me. However, we are coming in hot and know your offense has been beat before (Steelers game). Our secondary is very good and we have done a good job at stopping the run. As long as we don’t let Matt Ryan run around, we win 24-20.

Steelers game was the first game of the year..cmon. let the O get into a rythm.
our offense is averaging over 31 points a game over the last 4 games. We have all said it’s how teams are playing NOW. The last 4 games for both teams have been good. I think this will be a close game, the winner of the turnovers WILL win this game. I think GB gets rattled and turns it over 2 times and we get 7 points off of them and win it 24-20.IMO

Just making a point
That’s true, it was early in the year. I would’ve expected them to at least do something, but everything changes as the season continues. I’m just making a point that it is possible to shut down the offense, but I’m not going to say we’ll keep you under 10 points. Especially considering this game is @ Atlanta.
Wow, I never looked at the stats on Atlanta, but that’s pretty impressive regardless of who it’s against. That stat really makes this matchup intriguing!!!! Green Bay allowed a total of 10 points in the last 3 games.

GREEN BAY SQUEAKS BY
This is the first real test for Green Bay. Atlanta has many weapons (i.e. Matt Ryan, Roddy, Gonzo, Turner). Green Bay’s run game is a non-issue so this game, in my opinion is going to come down to who has the best secondary and who puts the QB on the ground. Green Bay wins by 6, in a shootout.
It's the first test?
Green Bay did shutout the Jets @ New York. I’m not sure how that isn’t included. That’s definately our best victory of the season.
I like your 2nd point, but don’t think it’ll be a high scoring shootout. I expect Atlanta determined to run the ball and keep Rodgers off the field. In the end, what you said about our secondary and pass rush will come into play. I hope that’s the case.

Jets game was the turning point.
Up to, and including the Jets game, the Packers really showed only glimmers of a team that was firing on all cylinders. Shutting out the Jets was impressive, but the offense did little, and the failed fake punt by the Jets really set the tone for the game. That said, I don’t feel the Jets to be a good a team as Atlanta and overrated like the Bears. This game vs. the Falcons will show us whether the Pack is for real or not. WHEN they win it will show us all they are the best team in the NFC. I still think it will be a shootout, maybe not very high scoring but an aerial display nontheless. Ryan will be pressured and will make some mistakes leading to turnovers. It will be fun to watch what transpires.
Similar to the 4-4 start the Packers has in 2009 then went 7-1 to finish the season
This time a 3-3 start…

Our offense was in a funk early in the year
And we were simply trying to recover from injuries. We were in complete control against Washington until Clay Mathews got injured early in the 3rd Quarter. It was all downhill from there. With Clay out against Miami, we were doomed and our offense still couldn’t pick up the slack. The offense finally got itself together against Dallas. The loss of Ryan Grant and Jermichael Finley really hurt this offense, but at least we got ourselves in a rhythem again.
I don’t have the stats with me, but it wasn’t too long ago I saw our record after the bye week over the past 5 years. It’s quite remarkable. I think we have the 3rd best record in that time trailing Philly and NE. Green Bay simply put, has put it together after the bye week each season. Last year is another example of it.

Special Teams
How are the Pack ST’s on both sides of the ball?
Special Teams
That is definately the weakest link for us. It has steadily been improving though. We haven’t allowed a big return that I can think of in recent weeks. However, in kick coverage I believe we are ranked #21st. I’m not sure if I’m reading that stat correctly though. In punting, we are ranked #25 allowing 1 TD on the season to Devin Hester in Week 3. P Tim Mathsay was really struggling early in the year. We were planning to cut him until he had a lights out performance against the Jets. It’s not too often your Punter gets recognized as a potential Player of the Game Award!!!! He’s been playing much better in recent weeks, but every now and then he’ll give some 30 yard punt not inside the 20.
Kick Returns are still a question mark. All season we were shuffling our return man. Now we have CB Sam Shields returning. He struggled catching the ball in Preseason, but he worked on it in Practice apparently. The last couple games he has done just fine. So Shields is our return man and he is very fast! Our punt returner is CB Tramon Williams. He’s not dangerous, but he’s not one to take lightly either.
I’m sure a lot of us Packer fans are still unsure where we stand with the Special Teams until we get a few more games in. Many changes have taken place. With all the injuries we have had, we had to sign a lot of free agents. That caused for shuffling all the Special Teams contributors.

Do you think the Packers will win?
It is playing out that they will. Underdog going to an undeated team at home this year. The same club that broke the streak at Lambeau. This game is giving me the willies.
As I stated above, I'm optimistic
I think we’ll pull out a 24-20 victory. It’ll be a tough game though. I’m definately hoping for a good game!

Never say will about a game
more like likely or could win.
This one is a toss up.
The team with the fewest mistakes wins IMO.

With the exception of Woodson
and Matthews maybe forcing a bad throw or twenty, how do you hope to contain Roddy White?

No Special Treatment
In other words, our pass rush is very good and our secondary is also pretty good. Tramon Williams is our best coverage CB and he plays on the right side. Charles Woodson is our best play making CB, and he plays on the left side or in the slot (where he does blitz from time to time). I’m assuming we treat him like all the other WR’s we have faced this year. White will get his catches, but in the process, our ball hawking secondary will go after a few of those passes.

How is Rodgers so good?
Most QB’s crumble without a running game, Rodgers hasn’t been perfect but he has played better than most teams that aren’t running the ball. How does he do this?
Please read Turner_The_Burner and my Best case/Worst case analysis of the upcoming week
IMO-He is very smart and the offense is very well designed.
He had years of instruction under Favre on how to run and not run the offense. He is patient, sometimes to a fault, with developement of plays, and is arguably one of the most accurate passers in the league, (Last week to Jones illustrated that). He is mobile, much to the chagrine of those who claimed that was his worst quality coming out of college. With time, he will dissect the defense, and with his legs, he keeps them on their heels.
GR8 Thread
I just happened on this thread while surfing for info on today’s Falcon/Packers game. I don’t usually participate in sports forums because of all of the flaming, but was so impressed with this thread that I signed up for SB just so I could say thanks. The positions taken were well thought out and articulated. Thanks again and hope you enjoy what should be an entertaining game.

i gotta say the Packers fans
travel phenomenally well. Also, very respectful and knowledgeable. Great game and you guys have a great team this year. In my opinion, the Falcons and Packers were my #1 and #2 teams in the NFC going into this week and nothing has changed. Good luck with SF, I’m sure you will handle them and good luck the rest of the way.
